Hillary Clinton, who has frequently described herself on the campaign trail as playing a pivotal role in forging a children's health insurance plan, had little to do with crafting the landmark legislation or ushering it through Congress, according to several lawmakers, staffers, and healthcare advocates involved in the issue.

In campaign speeches, Clinton describes the State Children's Health Insurance Program, or SCHIP, as an initiative "I helped to start." Addressing Iowa voters in November, Clinton said, "in 1997, I joined forces with members of Congress and we passed the State Children's Health Insurance Program." Clinton regularly cites the number of children in each state who are covered by the program, and mothers of sick children have appeared at Clinton campaign rallies to thank her.

This kind of sums it up.

Funny how Kennedy had basically dissed her on the issue recently. I guess he forgot his previous comments on the issue.

Senator Hatch, is mistaken that Hillary Clinton had nothing to do with SCHIP. In March 1997, Sen. Ted Kennedy, brought in Sen. Hatch to co-sponser SCHIP. This was after Hillary Clinton proposed the initiative for SCHIP, in December of 1996.

History of original legislation

As a part of the fallout from the failed 1993 Clinton health care plan, both Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy and the Clinton administration were looking for smaller health care initiatives that could gain bipartisan support.[9] In December 1996 First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton examined several possible such initiatives and decided expanding health care insurance to children who had none was the one to advance. (Indeed, a different variant of this approach, dubbed "Kids First", had been envisioned as a backup plan during original 1993 Task Force on National Health Care Reform meetings, as a way of gradually implementing universal health care.[10])

The new initiative was proposed at Bill Clinton's January 1997 State of the Union address, with the stated goal of coverage up to five million children.[9] Kennedy wrote much of the original bill, using an increase in tobacco taxes to pay the $20 billion price tag.[1] In March 1997, Kennedy brought Republican Senator Orrin Hatch onto the legislation as co-sponsor; Kennedy and Hatch had worked together as an "odd couple" in the Senate before, and here Hatch said that "Children are being terribly hurt and perhaps scarred for the rest of their lives" and that "as a nation, as a society, we have a moral responsibility" to provide coverage.

All she's done this entire campaign was divide the democratic party and misstate her experience. I have switched to support Barack Obama.

As I have written about in my books, I first joined Trinity United Church of Christ nearly twenty years ago. I knew Rev. Wright as someone who served this nation with honor as a United States Marine, as a respected biblical scholar, and as someone who taught or lectured at seminaries across the country, from Union Theological Seminary to the University of Chicago. He also led a diverse congregation that was and still is a pillar of the South Side and the entire city of Chicago. It's a congregation that does not merely preach social justice but acts it out each day, through ministries ranging from housing the homeless to reaching out to those with HIV/AIDS.

Most importantly, Rev. Wright preached the gospel of Jesus, a gospel on which I base my life. In other words, he has never been my political advisor; he's been my pastor. And the sermons I heard him preach always related to our obligation to love God and one another, to work on behalf of the poor, and to seek justice at every turn.

OK . So let it get right. 20 years you have known the preacher and had enough times to go listen to him speak when you went to the church. And you are claiming that you never got to listen to those bad comments from your preacher. How can one take your word on this ? It simply does not make any sense to me. You say that he has not been your political advisor but a pastor. If you are so good at leadership and knowing right from wrong then how come you failed to get the feel of your pastor ( his profile and teachings ) long ago ? You blame Hillary for authorizing the Iraq war - you attribute it to her lack of leadership skills. On the other hand here you have been going to a church for 20 years and you are saying that you never listened to your preachers wrong sermons. Give me a break. It must be a fairy tale.

This should not be coming up now!! It should have been challenged by our press

the moment Hillary started exaggerating her role there. Our democratic institutions

have become impotent sycophants to the DLC and the neocons of BushCo before.

We are being guided to continue on with BCBCB, taking us all to a fascist JeeBush.

If you are interested in Clinton's real role in the healthcare of children-look into the Clinton's (she while at the Rose Law firm) connections to Bush/Clinton/BCCI/Walmart financier JACKSON STEPHENS and the East Liverpool Ohio Toxic Waste Incinerator (located on a floodplain just 1,100 FEET from an elementary school). There was just an excellent diary at Daily Kos on this appalling link.

She wanted the candidates to be vetted. Here we go... the grave you dig for someone else is the one you rot in.

Sure, she correctly assumed that ABC, CNN and her friend Murdoch at Fox would never dig too deeply into her claims. But she also assumed that none of this would be open to discussion until after the convention. Now, the calls for her papers and tax returns, plus the non-MSM are on her tail to prove her rhetoric about experience.

She never saw this coming; guess someone should have told her that politics in the 21st Century is a bit different than the 90's. And she wants us to believe she can defeat the GOP when she hasn't adjusted to the new age of politics? It's like fighting in WW-II with a WW-I strategy.

This is what Obama"s response to the questions about his crazy pastor should be¦

Jeremiah Wright and a whole lot of other old angry black civil rights leaders and preachers grew up in a brutal and segregated America. Lynchings and hangings and beating were common in the south. They had to bear repeated insult and injury and an unfair shake from the law and society at large.

The bitterness and anger of a lot of these men, has unfortunately not changed with the times. And it is a large part of the reason why they make boneheaded comments today. It is tragic, because America has grown a lot and their anger prevents them from seeing it as such. So it is important to categorically denounce their divisive and hateful language. While racism still exists, America has made great bounds in fairness towards women and minorities and most people are ready to judge others on the content of their character, not the color of the skin, or gender.

The legacy of the oppression still exists in the infrastructure of our society, in poor schools and neighborhoods etc and should be addressed. but for the most part, anyone, black, white, woman, Hispanic, native American who tries hard enough can make the American dream for themselves.

This is a new low for Ted Kennedy.

For the young voters: Ted Kennedy is a disgrace to our party. Watch and learn. He is the old school politician you have been hearing about. Do you homework. You are being used.

Resume padding like a m-----f--------! Geeezzzzz, and folks fell for that. The media and the politicians who knew about this are the primary guard against this crap, and they have failed to do their jobs. No wonder she won't release records and information.
