GOP Gags Witnesses On Credit Card Woe

They came to the nation's capital this week from as far away as Denver, Chicago and Niagara Falls--five people who'd had tough experiences with their credit cards and were asked to share those tales with a House panel. Instead, they ran headfirst into the buzz-saw of Washington politics when the panel's Republicans insisted the visitors allow their lenders to discuss their financial histories publicly--in any forum, at any time.

For four of the five, it was a deal-breaker. Instead of signing the waivers allowing them to testify Thursday, they all sat silently in the audience.

"I didn't want all my ... information out there for just anybody," said Denver's Susan Wones, who saw the interest rate of her JP Morgan Chase card jump from 0 percent to 23 percent in one month last summer, without notification or explanation. "I'm extremely upset I can't talk about this."

Call me paranoid, but I'm getting real nervous about trusting banks with my money in checking /savings accounts to pay bills or otherwise. I remember the awful stories of Black Friday when people literally mobbed banks banging on bolted doors to get their money out. We both have direct deposit, but are considering foregoing that for awhile and managing our own paychecks until things resolve one way or another. All it would take is a closed bank to ruin so many who need access to their money to pay mortgages, etc. FDIC, my azz, by the time they give you your money it'll be 10% and/or not worth the paper it's printed on.

Republicans have proved their CRIMINALITY and DEREGULATION & PROTECTION OF
CORPORATE CRIME. Also they changed bankruptcy law to benefit THE RICH and to
screw middle-income American, workers.

Mortgage bankers, credit companies are allowed to RUN RAMPANT over the
taxpayers whose money is used for TAX GIVEAWAYS to rich CEOs and corporate welfare queens.

republicans DO NOT DESERVE POWER. Because they misused and abuse it constantly, without apology or conscience.

Pay off your card, put it in a drawer, do not use it for five years. That'll fix em.

It's called "usury." In other parts of the world you can lose your hand for that. Just like for a common thief.

Rigging the payment schedule to be "in the best interest of the bank," not the consumer, is called "fraud."

Posting garbage to someone's credit report without their knowledge or consent, and charging them to see it (and "dinging" the report when they do) is also "fraud."

All these little five-letter words. They describe ancient crimes, long forbidden and for very practical social reasons.

There are two sides to every story. In my case, I had two difficult years in business, but even though I ran up about $50,000 in credit card debt, I have paid back every penny, and so far paid off $25,000 of the debt and I am making good headway on the rest of the debt. I paid off $90,000 of debt last year alone. The business is making good headway now, and I am saving about $1000 a week. But even though I am saving money, making payments and even paying down credit card debt, my interest rates are all off the charts with ridiculous usuarus rates. I generate about $2000 in interest payments alone. It is pretty fucked up. The interesting thing about it is that I am now unable to get a business loan because I have too much CC debt. Thanks to the law makers for this

Well, you had your chance and getting all these required reforms done but you let Kucinich get away.
Now we will get more of the same - no changes. Our congress and senate is the problem!
Once you figure that out then maybe we can proceed, in the meantime suffer, you deserved it.

For those of you saying the consumer is the problem, you're a fool. We had one of those too common changes of cards because our card brand was purchased by a different bank. We have excellent, near perfect credit, never have missed a payment, have excellent ratios, etc. When the card transferred, we questioned it, because it went from 9.9 percent to 17.8. Nothing in what we had done or didn't do had transpired, and even in the new bank's literature, they were said to offer an interest rate much lower than the 17.8 they affixed to us.

When I called and spoke with them about it, they refused to lower the rate, and said that they could do anything they wanted, and that they didn't have to obey any rules or regulations, and that they never advertised that they sought to be the lowest, etc.

I told them that I may well decide to drop their foolish butts, and then they lowered it to 13.9. The next month, despite having made a purchase, our bill did not arrive. I called, and they said that they didn't issue one, because we were not required to make a payment, which is totally BOGUS. They had intentionally NOT sent us a bill, in hopes of being able to say we missed a payment and then tried to convince us that we did not need to make the payment then. I INSISTED AND HAD TO PAY A $10 FEE TO DO SO. The next month, it happened again. These people are playing financial roulette with us.

The public must be protected from these schemes.

TXFemmom, my story is very similar to yours! I'd been a loyal customer of a certain bank for over 10 years. My credit is fantastic, I pay my CC bills on time. My bank was bought out by another, bigger bank and that's when my troubles began. Like you, there was a month where I was not sent a bill, and missed a payment by TWO DAYS! NOT two months, TWO DAYS! I realized it had been a while since I'd received a bill. I checked online and realized I was late. I immediately called the bank and let them know I hadn't received a bill, and was told it's probably on it;s way and nit to worry. Well, when I DID get the bill, it had a late fee, and my 9.99% interest rate shot up to 25%! This also put my other card in jeopardy, raising THAT interest rate as well. The banks refused to lower the rate, even though I had tried to pint out that I had not received a bill and I had a perfect payment history for over 10 years! Why would I screw that up now?

There was no sympathy there so I suffered a huge financial setback in trying just to pay the newly adjusted minimum balances of my two cards. I'm currently paying the balances off and when I do will do everything I can to not rely on these banks anymore. I'm sure there are worse stories out there and have to wonder just how the banking industry and the government expects Americans to prosper with these new laws created to benefit big business at the expense of those who fuel this economy....the American consumer! Short-term thinking will destroy this nation.

This is Hitlerism, folks. They are stifling dissent by destroying people. Those people shouldn't have to permit their entire financial history to be displayed in order to testify before Congress.

Perhaps, Congress should be subjected to the same mandate about their financial dealings, before they can vote for an issue?

This is why we need to change the way the federal government works. The government is supposed to represent the people not the whore corporation who want to enslave people. Destroy K street. Term limits for Congressmen and senators. Enough of this bullshit.

What's it going to take for the American people to stand up and demand change? How many home foreclosures do we need? How many people need to be fired/laid-off before we say enough is enough?

Last November I got a new card because it had a lower rate than another card I had. Within two weeks after I had used the card for one small item..just to make sure it worked, I logged into the credit card site to pay my bill. Mind you I had not even received a bill from this credit card company and had only had the card for 2 weeks. When I got to the site I was informed that my credit card had been SOLD to another company and my interest rate was now twice what it was on the original card. I wrote Barney Frank and my Congressman (who was VERY responsive) and the Better Business Bureau....And my rate on this card is still the lower rate. By writing all these people I seem to have stopped the transfer. The only thing is I have to send Washington Mutual a paper check because when I try to pay it over the internet it tells me my card has been sold to SST..but apparently screaming loud enough has stopped that..maybe. The banks are part of the ruling oligarchy that OWNS this country and buys off all the politicians. Their policies are deceitful and unfair. But nobody is going to stop them until we have serious campaign finance reform..and that won't happen because our politicians are bought. Fortunately I am not in dire financial straits and will be able to pay all these off soon..but the fact that they are allowed to change your rate two weeks after getting the card..and sell it to another company seems way out of line...unethical is the word that springs to mind.

As long as the GOP can silence Americans it will keep them from worrying about electing another bozo to the White House.
