Jeremiah Wright, Obama's Pastor, Prompts Candidate To Address Comments

The appearance of video by Jeremiah Wright, pastor to Barack Obama, has caused a recent frenzy as both Democratic candidate struggle with the issue of race on the campaign trail. Here's an excerpt of an interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

Q: I don't know if you've seen it, but it's all over the wire today (from an ABC News story), a statement that your pastor (the Rev. Jeremiah Wright of Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago's South Side) made in a sermon in 2003 that instead of singing "God Bless America," black people should sing a song essentially saying "God Damn America."

A: I haven't seen the line. This is a pastor who is on the brink of retirement who in the past has made some controversial statements. I profoundly disagree with some of these statements.

Q: What about this particular statement?

A: Obviously, I disagree with that. Here is what happens when you just cherry-pick statements from a guy who had a 40-year career as a pastor. There are times when people say things that are just wrong. But I think it's important to judge me on what I've said in the past and what I believe.

Read the entire interview here.

Several of the morning shows returned to the issue today. On Morning Joe, McCain's campaign manager Charlie Black didn't take the bait on the subject, saying:

Charlie Black: What Sen. McCain has said repeatedly, is that these candidates cannot be held accountable for all the views of people who endorse them, or people who befriend them. And fortunately, I heard you report earlier that Sen. Obama has repudiated these very unusual views. But what John McCain believes is that Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton should be held accountable for their public policy views. The things we've described before. Big government vs. small government...

Joe: So this isn't an issue for John McCain.

Charlie Black: I don't think Sen. McCain wants to get in the middle of a discussion about Sen. Obama's former pastor, or his faith. He believes that people who endorse you, people who befriend you, are entitled to their own views, but you are not personally held accountable. That when someone endorses you or befriends you, they are embracing your views - the candidate's views - not the other way around.

UPDATE: So much for staying on message. Apparently the McCain campaign push out an editorial to the Wall Street Journal attacking Obama's connection to Rev. Wright. A campaign aide has since called the decision "a mistake."

He is just a politician using any group that can advance his agenda. A politician will tell you anything you would like to hear, make a promise to help you and when he is in office, drop you like a hot rock .
Obama has caused me, (a democrat) to start looking at McCain because I can't stand Hillary and Obama just commited political suicide.

Good god, I hope Obama doesn't go after them to hard. I mean there are other things that need to take precedence and bringing this up on the Clinton's could take years...

I mean really where does one start...

Rezco ties themselves, pushing thru NAFTA for WalMart, destroying the environment with Lafarge, Yucaipa, Outsourcng jobs with Tata Consultancy Services, blood diamonds investmants with DeBeers, and taking money from Gupta/infoUSA swindling the elderly out of their savings, campaign finance fraud with Hsu, Peter Paul, and a long list of others, being on the take with Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop-Grumman, General Dynamics and Raytheon on 360 earmarks, worth a combined $2.2 billion from 2002 to 2006, projects not requested by the Pentagon.. Hillary's Senior Adviser Huma Abedin's family being financed by the financiers and founders of al-Qaeda "Abdullah Omar Naseef". 3.9 million from executive donors and $854,462 in campaign funding from the health care industry companies,

Wake Up.

And then Bill was paid $750,000 to advise top United Arab Emirates officials on how to sidestep and address growing U.S. concerns over the acquisition of the security contract for America's ports....

Why all the fuss about Obama's "preacher" spouting this hateful & grossly absurd fantasies ? This used to be the God given right of the wealthy white "evangelical" southern Taliban.Bent on forcing their brand of religious belief's and sexist, and racial bias, on all of us who believe differently. The ones responsible for the Bush regime. The ones behind the scandals, lies, and policies that have successfully eroded American democracy, and civil liberties, and raising the level of incompetence to obscene disbelief.

This is the major reason that I voted and caucus for Hillary. One of my co-workers who is also AA, husbands family belong to Church of God Christ. She told me all about that religion and their issues. After 20 plus years of marriage it was the main reason for her in-laws divorce. Then she told me that Obama was a member. I did research on the Rev and after learning about his statements I knew that I could not support Obama. I'm surprised it took this long to unfold. I just can't believe you attend a church for 20 years and now that you are running for president you want to denounce your pastor's beliefs and comments.

I don't think this is really as bad as Gerry's comments!! Yes Obama does have a relationship with this man and I really can't imagine him or his wife just sitting down at church while this is being said and do nothing because I know I wouldn't. This Pastor travels EVERYWHERE without Obama at his side so why should Obama be responsible for this mans words?

Gerry on the other hand spoke DIRECTLY ABOUT OBAMA and will not apologize for her opinions about Obama and has said the same views over the past 20 years!

This is just dirty polotics! First McCains affair, then Hillary and now Obama.

I didn't think it was a big deal not to wear the flag pin but now that I know more about the indoctrination he recieved in his church for 20* years and some of the views of his wife, maybe just maybe Ombama was influenced by the Pastor and was ashamed to wear that pin and admit he sat through his rantings for all that time.

Yes I would continue to attend the church. I love America but detest the actions some of its citizens have committed on other citizens. Historically separate but equal laws protected certain citizens who were allowed to get away with horrible crimes because they were born to a certain group. Jeremiah Wright is a product of that era. His experience is real. He never lynched, raped or killed anyone. He did however survive an era when those acts were routinely committed on people like him. There was no protection for people like him. He is speaking the truth....sometimes the truth hurts.

If the church I belonged to molested & raped little children like say the ...Catholic Church I would leave. Last time I checked speaking ones mind is not a criminal act. Raping little children is...

How can you even compare Geraldine Ferraro association with Hillary Clinton to the Rev Wright's and Barack Obamas?!? It isnt the same thing at ALL..Hillary wasnt married by Geraldine, her children were not baptized by her, and she has never written a book inspired by Ms Ferraro's sermons.. Hillary has never referred to Geraldine as a "close personal friend and mentor". , and HRC never gave her "official" standing in her campaign like the Rev. Wright has had within Baracks. And she hasnt been attending "the Church of Geraldine" for the past 20 years. Sorry, but no....

I am on the fence about this issue. My family attends a church where the Pastor (and in fact most of the church) strongly believes that homosexually is a sin and that Gays have no place in the pulpit. I disagree with this homophobic position. The Pastor has given sermons against homosexuality. However, when my husband and I visit my family, I do attend this church regularly and have in the past asked the Pastor to "pray" for me and for spiritual guidance.

I agree with many of his other scriptural teachings. Should I be held accountable for this person"s teachings? I don"t know. The reason why I have not distanced myself from my family"s church is because for me the pastor is not the church. I go to church to fellowship with other Christians and other family members and to take time out to focus on the Lord. I am also able to separate out those teachings which I believe are scriptural based and which are not.

When I was younger I was raised in the Catholic Church. I remember during the Easter season the church would read the Passion of Christ (which is the series of events leading up to Christ"s crucifixion). However, the version of the Passion which the Catholic Church used back then was in retrospect, entirely anti-Jewish and in fact seemed to blame Jews for Christ"s death. I stayed Catholic for a long time after making this discovery even though I disagreed with what could be viewed as an anti-Semitic interpretation of Christ"s death. I could leave my family's church. But I would be leaving a lot of things I love - such as the families and parishoners I've known for years, the fellowship and the good work the church does in the community, etc. I tell myself that I can separate the church from the pastor, but I don't know if that is the right position to take.

Even after the Catholic church had its priest scandal, I continued to go to Catholic Church for a while. Partly because I was able to separate the priest from the parish. But even there I am not sure I did the right thing. I would hope that if someone where to look back over my life they would judge me by my views and statements and not by those of my church"s religious leaders

Dear Senator Obama:
I am so proud of the millions of Americans who have come forward to support you, to volunteer, to canvass, to phonebank, to contribute in what ever way they can, and of those strong leaders who have endorsed you. We have met you, and we know your integrity, your brilliance, your competence and your heart! Most certainly we know that no-one is guilty by association, and we won't be influenced by such nonsense. We believe in you, and we will continue to support you all the way to the White House because "we are the change we have been waiting for."

Why did this old story come out now, in regards to Obama's Pastor making some interesting statements in church ? This is really old news, nothing that happened in the last month or so, concerning the Obama campaign. Very fishy why this is hitting the news right now.

You know the Clinton's brought this out now, because they were going to be trashed on this weekends news shows for the Ferraro racist comments. Hillary Clinton would have had a very tough time if she was the only thing on the news this weekend, and the momemtum was shifting towards Obama this week after his two recent wins, and more super delegates going for him.

I think this is something the Clinton campaign had in the vault for a tough time like this, and they brought it out now to get the heat off them. This is not news like the Ferraro comment really is big news.

Greetings Senator Obama,

First I must say that I am confident that you will be the President of the United States - my President. I am a young black man and believe that you are the man to help us heal from the generation of our fathers and grandfathers who were so hurt by racism and slavery. I understand the pain that Pastor Wright and his generation went through but we as a nation must crossover into a new day. Blacks, Whites, Hispanics and people from all races, we must go beyond this point in our national politics so that we can heal. Please Senator Obama, right now you have the attention of America. Show us that you can bring us together. Show us that you are a uniter. This is the 21st Century and our country needs to heal from the pain of the past 400 years.

Please make a nation speech on your personal faith and values and also take the time to inspire us to talk to our neighbors so that we can heal. Even if it means buying time on prime time shows, please make a speech and appeal to Americans, from all walks of life and races, to shed bigotry, racism, and all those silly things we do that divide us. Talk to us about unity Barack. Please talk to us about unity. I have personally been in so much pain all day since this news came out. I have also been in Churches where statements have been made that left me wondering whether I heard them right. I don't think you should be judged by the statements that your Pastor made in the past. Help us all to heal from our pain Barack. Talk to America, from your heart, about this issues and bring closure to this.

In your speech please address the fact that they once tried to smear you by saying that you are a Muslim and now that they discovered that your pastor is a little "on the edge of social discourse" they want to pounce on it. Please address this on National TV. I am in prayer for you and for America.

I've been following Senator Obama for over a year now, and he has said in this past year of his preacher that he doesn't agree with all his world views, but that he did like him a lot. He did fire him as a result of the comments he made. I'm a 46 year old caucasian woman and I was just recently called a n****r by a caucasian in a pick up truck after I started sporting a Barack Obama sticker on my car. I also was swerved at and had someone act like they were going to run into my bumper by 2 other caucasian pick up truck drivers one complete with a Confederate flag. I don't know how you can live in this in country and not recognize that racism is predominately cast toward African Americans. I do sympathize with people who have been victims and still continue to be victims of racism. I understand Wright's need to speak out about how he feels about this country, but as a representative of the Obama campaign, he should know that what he says can be used against Obama, and should not have taken the job. My sister is a Republican, and I don't share her views, but I still love her.

From Reader EM on talkingpointsmemo -

"What drives me crazy is how this could have been avoided so easily if Wright was the slightest bit media-savvy. Had he merely controlled his tongue and limited himself to advocating an attack on Iran to encourage massive worldwide Muslim attacks leading to a fulfillment of the biblical prophecy of end-times and bringing about Armageddon and the summary slaughter of every Jew, Muslim, Catholic, and non-believer on the planet while rapturing him and his flock up to heaven, then followed it up by denouncing Catholics as cult members and blaming Hurricane Katrina on gay people, this story wouldn't be metastasizing like this. One five minute milquetoast repudiation by Obama and it would all be behind him.

But what does Wright do instead? He spews this vile "God damn America" bile. What a psycho."

Obama's days are numbered. The truth is coming out, and it's not pretty. For Obama to say he never heard these sermon's is ridiculous. Where are the tapes of the sermon's Obama said he heard? There aren't any. Bye, bye Obama.
