McCain: Al Qaeda May Intervene To Tip Election Towards Dems

  |   March 14, 2008 01:34 PM

"Republican presidential candidate John McCain said on Friday he fears that al Qaeda or another extremist group might attempt spectacular attacks in Iraq to try to tilt the U.S. election against him," Reuters reports.

McCain, at a town hall meeting in this Philadelphia suburb, was asked if he had concerns that anti-American militants in Iraq might ratchet up their activities in Iraq to try to increase casualties in September or October and tip the November election against him.

"Yes, I worry about it," McCain said. "And I know they pay attention because of the intercepts we have of their communications ... The hardest thing in warfare is to counter someone or a group of individuals who are willing to take their own lives in order to take others."

TPM's Greg Sargent notes: "You know, I keep hearing from Republican pundits and operatives that the specter of terrorism inevitably bolsters the electoral prospects of Republicans. But here McCain says that Al Qaeda would amp up their attacks in Iraq to hurt him. Hard to keep track of this stuff sometimes."

Is this the Al Qaeda that's really tight with Iran? McCain hits the neocon quintella: fear-mongering, hate-mongering, counterfactual, nonsensical, and batshit.

Everybody relax. We are being punked.

How do you know John ? Did you learn this on one of your shopping trips ?

This claptrap has become clear as day. Didn't you get the memo, McCain? Oh, right. You haven't caught up yet. Well, the doctor recommended that hearing aid and those spectacles for a reason. Pay attention.

Sort of a stupid statement. If Al Quada wants anyone to win it would be McCain. He is the only one who has promised to keep our occupation army in Iraq. If they leave, so does the only reason for Al Quada to be in Iraq. If we leave, Al Quada in Iraq is history. As long as we stay, so will Al Quada.

One of my fondest memories is of John Mc-Inane standing in one of the most dangerous open markets in Bagdad dressed to the nines in his heavy duty flack jacket and surrounded by Marines during that pre-arranged, totally choreographed visit before the surge started.

He was going on and on about how safe it was in Bagdad and much progress had been made in making Iraq a safer place and it was a total load of crap.

Anything out of Mc-Inane's mouth about the WAR AGAINST iSLAMO-FASCISTS must be taken with a very small grain of salt.

Al Qaeda May Intervene To Tip Election Towards Dems

Perhaps Al Qaeda could also intervene to tip the NBA playoffs to the Lakers. I just put a C-note on them and could use a little help.

Osama Bin Laden is dead. He Has been for years. McCain knows that! Bin Laden is brought out whenever Republicans are in difficult election or real trouble is faced by Bush and friends. Think Obamam better win or we will be at war for 100 years. The dollar will be worthless, and Friedmans, men shall reign.

Somewhat logically, tho, if al-quaeda attacking in Iraq is bad news for McCain but al-Quaeda NOT attacking in America is bad news for the Democrats, then the Bush policy is the victor, right--better to fight them over there than over here?

And what gives us the right to invade a sovereign nation, without provocation, and use their country as a killing field on which to kill terrorists??? We have destroyed that country. Is that saving it from Islamic extremism? Is that the price of democracy??

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:01 PM on 03/16/2008

What I don't get about that logic is the assumption that AQ has the capability to strike us at home but has chosen not to do so in favor of fighting us in Iraq, and only in the case of our withdrawal from Iraq would they then "follow us home." Doesn't make sense to me.

More likely, the truth and reality will hurt the Republican machine more than anything else possibly could.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:23 PM on 03/15/2008

Typical republican fear mongering, from Bush II.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 07:10 PM on 03/15/2008

Is John McCain passing on classified intelligence information? Why is it he can say that intercepted intelligence would lead him to believe that Al Queda in Iraq is planning on escalating attacks in Iraq. Would this information be classified? I think he may have just broken the law.

To me this question that was asked of him smacks of a fixed question. I think he had the reporter ask him this question so it did not appear to be him that was pandering the fear card. Just my opinion.

Most politicians who feel they are destined for the White House concern themselves first with The First 100 Days- it's a guidepost, a gradecard, a benchmark. With John McCain, we know he has much bigger plans- it's 100 Years of War, at the very least in Iraq, but as we know, he has much broader ideas about the Middle East. Fewer jobs, more war. Go in Peace.

Don't tell anyone, John, millions of Al Qaeda will be voting absentee in November.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:30 PM on 03/15/2008

This should not be a partisan issue. Debate the policy. Hillary and Obama may belatedly be coming to an arrangement to stop focusing as much on personal attacks, and every bizarre comment by a staff member. All 3 candidates should do the same with regards to a possible terrorist attack. Show a united front against any planned attack against civilians, and debate how specifically to deal with terrorism, the war, military or political solutions, financing, etc.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:26 PM on 03/15/2008

Yep that logic is baloney.

If Al Queda pulled off "spectacular" attacks in Iraq, it could also be interpreted as being pro-neocon events. -- Simply because further instability in Iraq could be an argument for not being able to completely pull out of the quagmire and mess that Bush Jr. made. Bush Jr & the neo-cons have worsened terrorism and helped Al Queda recruit in Iraq.

Peace is a diplomatic act, not a tactical victory. That's something Bush Jr. and the neo-cons have never understood. Diplomacy and peace are better achieved by rational, mature leaders -- not neo-cons.

Several people here evidently need to read the post again. McCain is saying if al Quida does spectacular attacks in IRAQ = Dem points. Spectacular attack here = Republicans.
Does this math help anybody.
He is not being inconsistent. Though in Spain, even attacks on their country ultimately benefited al Quida.

This is an abhorant practice. This is just more blatant fear mongering by McCain. It's as despicable as bush and cheney telling us if we don't vote republican, we are all going to die. That is what they have been saying, in essence, for years now. Ever since 9/11, and you are still falling for it??

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:07 PM on 03/16/2008

Well MCBUSH claims the democrats will send the AlQueda millions of ballots so they can oust this old warior, maybe so, just like the Repugs did back in 2000, to our troops who were so gung ho, and not aware of of the jackass they put in office. BOMB, BOMB, BOMB, IRAN, by November MC BUSH will be committed, hopefully.

Al Qaeda has said that their intent is to keep us embroiled in conflict that will weaken us economically as well as militarily. As long as the warhawks are in power, they are playing right into Al Qaeda's plans. We are well on the path to ruination, thanks to the policies of this administration. A vote for McCain is a vote for Al Qaeda. A vote for McCain is a vote for $200 a barrel oil. So disastrous are votes for McCain, that it would be cheaper to buy out all the people who would vote for him and move them all to Dubai, than let him in to the White House. Four more years of a Republican regime here would have all working class people homeless, standing in bread lines.

There's a word for that. The word is "paranoid."

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:49 PM on 03/15/2008

Senator McCane, you say Democrats are friends of Bin Laden's crowd; but, weren't these Bush's buddies?? Is your next point, Senator McCane, "What would happen to growth in our healthy American economy?" One more thing Senator, aren't you too old for President today if we'll be in Iraq for the next 100 years?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:07 PM on 03/15/2008

Why do politicians keep insulting the intelligence of the electorate with such asinine crap???

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:43 PM on 03/15/2008

Richard Clarke has suggested just the opposite. Bin Laden wants the right to win and continue doing the very things that aid in his recruiting and confirm his characterization of the US.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:36 PM on 03/15/2008

Sorry John, al Qaeda is still supporting GW Bush or any of the Bush Clan. Their fall back is Ralph Sunni Nader.
