CHICAGO — Presidential candidate Barack Obama said Friday that he got more political money from indicted Chicago businessman Antoin "Tony" Rezko than he has previously acknowledged.

Rezko helped raise up to $250,000 for his various political races, Obama's campaign said. The campaign had previously put the figure at $150,000 but now says that amount was only for his 2004 Senate race.

And in interviews with two Chicago newspapers, the Democrat again said it was a mistake to involve Rezko in his purchase of a new home _ not just because Rezko was under federal investigation but because he was a contributor and political activist.

Still, Obama said he did nothing unethical.

"He never once asked me for any favors, or ever did any favors for me," the Illinois senator said in an interview with the Chicago Sun-Times. "He never gave me any gifts or gave me any indication he was setting me up to ask for any favors in the future."

Obama met Friday with the editorial boards of the Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times in an effort to resolve nagging questions about his relationship with Rezko, a Chicago businessman and major fundraiser in Illinois politics.

Rezko is on trial on charges including mail fraud and attempted extortion. Federal prosecutors say he tried to use his connections to Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to demand kickbacks from companies wanting to do business with state government.

Obama is not accused of any wrongdoing.

But his long friendship with Rezko has hampered his efforts to campaign as a new-style politician who abhors backroom deals and insider favors.

Rezko has not contributed to Obama's presidential campaign, but he did raise money for Obama's bids for other offices.

His staff said Friday evening that Rezko raised about $160,000 for Obama's successful run for U.S. Senate in 2004 and $60,000 to $90,000 for his state Senate campaigns and a failed bid for Congress in 2000.

Previously, his presidential campaign said Rezko was connected to about $150,000, all of which was later donated to charity.

"We reviewed our records for any contributions we believe could reasonably be credited to Mr. Rezko's political support and that is the generous estimate we concluded upon," spokesman Ben LaBolt said in an e-mail.

Rezko advised Obama on buying a new Chicago home in 2005 and his wife bought a vacant lot next to the Obamas' house. Rezko's wife, Rita, later sold part of the lot to Obama so they would have a bigger side yard.

Obama said he got no price break on his new house because Rezko was buying the lot next door from the same sellers. And he said it was Rezko's idea, not his, to buy the lot.

"He said, 'Well, I might be interested in purchasing the lot.' And my response was, 'That would be fine,'" Obama said. "This is an area where I can see sort of a lapse in judgment, where I could have said 'No, I'm not sure that's a good idea.'"

Where exactly is the illegality? How does this compare to Whitewater or any of the stuff associated with Clinton. How does this compare with McCain's cozy lobbyist relationship?

Sorry but I am not seeing how he's "done" here.

Knowing about Wright and Rezko, how are you gonna talk about how great your judgment is. Bill was right, this is the biggest fairytale I've ever seen. The only reason he didn't vote for the war was cause he wasn't in office yet, had he been privy to the same bogus intel as Hillary, he would have voted the same. Just as his judgment told him to vote the same as her for every Iraq related vote since he took office. Give me a break. How are you gonna claim superior judgement when you decided to put a guy like Wright on your campaign. Hello! You're running for president of the United States or is it AmeriKKK. Looks like GOd has damned America, who was once full of HOPE for a positive change, that hope has been squandered just like Bush's support after 911. The Audacity of You! Shame on you Barack OBAMA! You take other politicians words for your own speeches and even Wrights words for the title of your own book! What kind of person will your judgment tell you to appoint to the Suipreme Court? Are you gonna claim that you didn't know how the Justice really felt after knowing them for twenty years?

There's a lot more to this Rezko connection than is being reported nationally. In fact, the U.S. Attorney's announcement about Spitzer came down on the same day Obama was linked to a Health Facilities Planning Board in Illinois that Rezko set up to steer development contracts his way. A memo was introduced into evidence in the Rezko trial which showed that Obama drafted legislation to overhaul the board. Obama became one of eight people who were consulted about appointments to open vacancies, and Rezko paid kickbacks in order to win the project bids. For more on this and the role of Karl Rove, check out the article I've posted at thecityedition.com. Here's a direct.

Obama is basing his campaign on hope and "judgment" - his judgment on the Iraq war. Judgment? Obama has shown lack of judgment more than once. He lacked judgment (supposed to be a talent to have natural judgment) when he chose to do drugs, when he chose do deal with Rezko (remember Obama is a lawyer) and making Rev. Wright his mentor.

So, where is Obama's judgment talent?

You mean Mr. Superior Judgement showed inferior judgement? This does not compute. Never mind: just keep putting those anti-Obama headlines further down the page for more anti-Hillary headlines. No one will notice.

Who needs Karl Rove to tear down someone's strengths when its done for him? Hillary, the devil we know, vs. Obama, the devil we're just finding out about. I'll hold my nose and vote for one of them. Anything to avoid another Repuklican administration, but not for a minute am I under any illusions about either candidates. Maybe this will wake some of the Obamatons to the reality of their candidate. He's puttin' on a hell of a show ain't he?

This is just the next chapter in a vile effort by the disbelievers to tarnish the truth. By now, everyone knows that Obama was delivered to the campaign -- full-grown, brand new, hermetically sealed and with no murky political history -- by The Good Ship Lollipop.

Read some of the posts by the more rabid O'bots... they 'know' his soul, his moral compass, his character, his superior intelligence and his virtue -- because, y'see, they all grew up with him in the same house.

... or they read it somewhere.

NIce to see this piece of the real Obama buried on the "Politics" page of HuffPo just like all the others. God forbid HuffPo readers should actually get a sense of what their candidate is all about. Nice.

Well, the crap that should have hit the fan several months ago may be coming to late, huh? If the media had SCRUTINIZED this man with half the zeal they have with other candidates . . . . . oh, well. Get used to saying President McCain . . . well, for a little while. He'll probably bomb us into oblivion.

The lesson? All that glitters is NOT gold.

aS LONG AS POLITICIANS HAVE TO RAISE LOTS OF MONEY TO BE ELECTED, THEY ARE GOING TO BE INVOLVED WITH PEOPLE WHOSE MOTIVES ARE QUESTIONABLE.

When you are very hungry and some one offers you a piece of pie , you thank them and eat it... you dont ask if the oie was stolen. And becuase you ate it, you are not the thief.

Politicians dont handle their finances or the books on the political contributions they receive. If they did that, even less would get done in Coingress if thats possible.

Regards

The more I read about this story, the more it seems like it has no legs. Maybe they'll turn up something, but so far, it's going nowhere.

The people are outraged by a minister who said inflammatory things while the economy is going to a place not seen since the depression, hundreds of thousands of civilians have been killed in Iraq as a war goes on that we started unnecessarily , our political system is so filled with corruption and graft that we now send a politician a month to prison and the ecosystem that sustains us in dying.

Yep, but that minister, we gotta stop that guy!

This guy is just what the republicans needed to get their agenda back in play, we are screwed with him as the nominee. Go Hillary, please pull this one out, we need a fighter not a crooked senator that wont even fight.

How many times are we going to read this story only to find out, once again, that Obama did nothing illegal or unethical.
