CHICAGO — Presidential candidate Barack Obama said Friday that he got more political money from indicted Chicago businessman Antoin "Tony" Rezko than he has previously acknowledged.

Rezko helped raise up to $250,000 for his various political races, Obama's campaign said. The campaign had previously put the figure at $150,000 but now says that amount was only for his 2004 Senate race.

And in interviews with two Chicago newspapers, the Democrat again said it was a mistake to involve Rezko in his purchase of a new home _ not just because Rezko was under federal investigation but because he was a contributor and political activist.

Still, Obama said he did nothing unethical.

"He never once asked me for any favors, or ever did any favors for me," the Illinois senator said in an interview with the Chicago Sun-Times. "He never gave me any gifts or gave me any indication he was setting me up to ask for any favors in the future."

Obama met Friday with the editorial boards of the Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times in an effort to resolve nagging questions about his relationship with Rezko, a Chicago businessman and major fundraiser in Illinois politics.

Rezko is on trial on charges including mail fraud and attempted extortion. Federal prosecutors say he tried to use his connections to Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to demand kickbacks from companies wanting to do business with state government.

Obama is not accused of any wrongdoing.

But his long friendship with Rezko has hampered his efforts to campaign as a new-style politician who abhors backroom deals and insider favors.

Rezko has not contributed to Obama's presidential campaign, but he did raise money for Obama's bids for other offices.

His staff said Friday evening that Rezko raised about $160,000 for Obama's successful run for U.S. Senate in 2004 and $60,000 to $90,000 for his state Senate campaigns and a failed bid for Congress in 2000.

Previously, his presidential campaign said Rezko was connected to about $150,000, all of which was later donated to charity.

"We reviewed our records for any contributions we believe could reasonably be credited to Mr. Rezko's political support and that is the generous estimate we concluded upon," spokesman Ben LaBolt said in an e-mail.

Rezko advised Obama on buying a new Chicago home in 2005 and his wife bought a vacant lot next to the Obamas' house. Rezko's wife, Rita, later sold part of the lot to Obama so they would have a bigger side yard.

Obama said he got no price break on his new house because Rezko was buying the lot next door from the same sellers. And he said it was Rezko's idea, not his, to buy the lot.

"He said, 'Well, I might be interested in purchasing the lot.' And my response was, 'That would be fine,'" Obama said. "This is an area where I can see sort of a lapse in judgment, where I could have said 'No, I'm not sure that's a good idea.'"

As i had posted in another blog.... "Who IS Obama?" he came from a virtual "unknown" out of nowhere a year ago, to being a "perfect" man????....i was slightly admonished for even asking the question.

I am UN-decided and live in a state that has yet to have their primary...i just want to know "who" the hell he is. i KNOW what he says about change and hope, but does that make him the best candidate when we dont know HOW he will do these wonderful things.....without knowing How he got where he is?

Politicians are, after all; Politicians and Everybody has a history.

I say lets get to Know Obama the way we Know the Clintons and McPain... before we rush to decide!

for a man who's whole anti hillary crusade is about good judgement. there is alot of really bad judgement coming out. yes the previous poster is right. he is toast for the general election and now too damaged to be a v.p. candidate. he may still have enough of the obamaites in his spell to hold on to the nomination. but thats it he is toast. good bye 60 votes in the senate. good bye big majority in congress. good bye real energy policy, good bye health care for all. the great experiment the great illusion that so many people on here were so hot for and willing to crush anyone that thought differently is over. its toast

Let's put this in some context-
hillary states Obama has not served the Public long enough to be considered for Commander in Chief, so obviously he is not so ingrained in the Politics of Power. Certainly not the extensive Resume of either Hill or Mac.
So Obama has One demerit- he is still not in the same league as the other two.
AS for his Preacher- I'm pissed off too- I want Americans to wake up and hold those responsible for not only the last 7 yrs of Corp'ist domination of our country- but the last 40 yrs. The Inc's have wrapped themselves in our flag claiming to From 'America', but they are NOT AMERICANS!
The Pastor was using Fire & Brimestone and a good dose of Responisblity to get his congregation to stand up aginst thoe who have Hi- jacked Our Country!I see his statement as referring to th eGod Damn 'america Incs'' who have camoflauged themselves in our symbols so as to fuck the rest of the World - they are responsible for the events of 9/11 as much as the hi-jackers.
In addition th elast 35 yrs have been a series of blockades to the progress WE all Declared we wanted in the '60's and early '70's. Woman still only make about $0.77 to a man's Dollar, we are stil fighting to maintain Roe v Wade, we are still facing massive Environmental issues , we are still being mainlined Oil from Foreign countries, making US their slaves.

Mr. Rezko has donated to the campaigns of Al Gore, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Rick Lazio, John Kerry, and Barabara Boxer, Carol Moseley-Braun. The largest contribution he has made is $15,000 to the "DNC SERVICES CORPORATION/DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE".

Well I trust the judgement of Al Gore and John Kerry AND Barack Obama and I understand that it’s not always possible to vet every contributor.

Compared to what the Clntons have been up to ( Whitewater, Norman Hsu, Burkle, Frank Guistraetc, Paul trial and all the greatest hits of the 80s and 90s. this is VERY minor to me.

AND

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/03/clintons-tied-to-rezko.php

Clinton's national co-chair received donations from Rezko. Three of the co-defendants at Rezko trial contributed to Clintons and campaign supporters.

Of the other five defendants, three have donated to the Clintons or to Clinton supporters, three have donated mostly to Republicans, and at least two have donated to Obama’s political opponents. None have donated to Obama.

Is this yet another example of that "judgement" we've all heard so much about? Can't wait to see what comes out next!

I wish that the truth had come out much earlier in the game. The election results in majority of states could have been different.

from BulletinPointjournal:

Rezko "raised funds FOR MANY POLITICIANS, both DEMOCARATS and REPUBLICANS.

These include prominent Democrats, such as FORMER PRESIDNET BILL CLINTON, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn, Attorney General Lisa Madigan, U.S. Senator and Presidential Candidate Barack Obama,Comptroller Dan Hynes, former Cook County Board President John Stroger, and Cook County Board President Todd Stroger. Rezko has also raised money for former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar, a Republican, and he co-chaired a megamillion-dollar fund-raiser for President George W. Bush in 2003"

npr:

Rezko has contributed to, or raised money for, current Illinois Comptroller Dan Hynes, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, Illinois Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn and Illinois U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, all Democrats. But his most notable fundraising efforts have been on behalf of Democratic Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, which earned Rezko a spot within Blagojevich's inner circle.

guilt by association is one of the nastiest political tricks one can play, and, through subordinates, those nasty old hacks, clinton and mccain, are more than happy to go joe mccarthy on obama's ass. with all of the skeletons rattling around in their closets, they sure have a lot of gall.

Obama says Rezko did not ask him any favours. Mmm. 250,000 dollars with no strings attached? Maybe Obama used his well renowned judgement and concluded that Rezko was Santa Claus.

No, what he said was that the only LEGAL work he had done that involved Rezko in any way was about 5 hours for a non-profit community organization that was engaged in a community improvement project with Rezko. The client was the community group, NOT Rezko, who enjoyed an excellent reputation in Chicago at that time as a real estate mogul and philanthropist.

I'll call your bulls**t.

As his lawyer, he DID bill only 5 hours. He admitted to other dealings with him.

What is it that you're suddenly so shocked about?

This has been verified by the Chicago Tribune, the VERY conservative paper that broke the Rezko/Obama ties 18 months ago.

And please show us one quote from Obama regarding Pastor Wright prior to this latest hub-bub.

How is Wright "different" than anything Obama has said?

Where did it say that it was more hours?

There are talking about contributions RAISED! You know, like Norman Hsu and all of those Chinese cooks, dish-washers and bus-boys contributed millions to Hillary.

The good news for Obama on Rezko is that the Clinton Campaign has as much credibility on bad real estate deals and nefarious campaign donors as Elliot Spitzer has on sex scandals. Come to think of it wasn't there a sex scandal involving Bill Clinton at some point? I was in high school at the time but I remember something...

There is no good news for Obama on Rezko, other than the story is so complex and cloaked that it's like jello.

It's clear that anyone who earmarks money for his wife's hospital and then she gets a big raise right away is NOT above giving favors to Rezko. it's clear that their relationship is more than he admitted it to be. So it's clear he's not uncomfortable with lying publicly.

So, forget the "Yes We Can" theme. It's very clear that Obama is just another politician.

Maybe people will like him anyway. It's not like this is going to shock voters that are beyond the age of 20, anyway. We all knew this.
