Clinton Won't Release Earmark Requests Like Obama

Newsday:

Close observers of yesterday's reports on the efforts of McCain and Obama to get Sen. Clinton to disclose her earmark requests going back to 2001 may have noticed a strange thing about the statement her office issued at the end of the day.

It said all manner of things about earmarks, and moratoriums, and funding, and accountability. But it never said whether she would disclose her earmark requests going back to 2001.

We spent today back-and-forthing a few more times by e-mail with her press office, and the exchanges made it pretty clear that the oversight was intentional. The plan seems to be that since the NY press has never obsessed over Hillary's earmark requests, she can safely not release them as long as she doesn't say she won't and doesn't say why she won't.

Considering what I just read on the Seattle Times web site regarding Hillary Clinton's earmarks, I can understand why she is trying to hide them. It appears many of them have in return donated to her campaign. Many are defense contractors, which may help explain why she voted for the Iraq war and has refused to admit it is a mistake.

I think this is much more of an issue than where exactly the earmarks went, or whether they went to defense contractors. But innuendo in this case is just slime until you can demonstrate a quid pro quo from a meaningful number of these.

Large companies, industry associations, and very rich people never put all their donations in one person's campaign. They spread them out among the candidates to make sure whoever wins got something from them. If you picked some of these companies and researched their donations, you will probably find much greater amounts went to a Republican primary candidate, and an equal, or similar amount went to other democratic primary candidates.

This tells the Clinton story, but it doesn't tell the WHOLE story.

Personally, I don't care about the tax records. I don't see why that's even relevant - it's supposed to be private between you and the IRS and no one else's business. Your doings as a public "servant", however, are VERY relevant, nay, VITAL, to the public when considering for whom to vote. Earmarks, Senate votes, and White House papers should all be on the table - it's fair game. Taxes? None of your damn business.

The Clintons have amassed a huge fortune since leaving the White House, a sum not made by speeches or book writing.
