It was a decision that only President Bush had the power to make: At about 9 a.m. on March 19, 2003, in the Situation Room in the basement of the West Wing of the White House, he gave the "execute order" to begin Operation Iraqi Freedom, the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Now, five years later, the consequences of that act will soon be beyond Bush's grasp. In 10 months, they'll land on the desk of his successor.

Thanks in part to the Iraq war, the next U.S. president -- Republican or Democrat, black or white, man or woman -- will take office with America's power, prestige and popularity in decline, according to bipartisan reports, polls and foreign observers.
Coming on Monday: Daily life in Baghdad.

"The winner of the 2008 elections will command U.S. forces still at war in Iraq, Afghanistan and against elusive terrorists with a deadly reach. The U.S. economy will remain burdened. ... America's moral leadership and decision-making competence will continue to be questioned," begins a study of foreign-policy choices for the next president, which a Georgetown University task force released last month.

"Restored respect will come only with fresh demonstrations of competence," the study said.

The numbers don't inspire confidence: Oil prices are at an all-time high, the dollar at new lows against the euro. Surveys find the United States' popularity and respect slipping in every part of the globe except Africa. A poll of 3,400 active and retired U.S. military officers by Foreign Policy magazine found that 88 percent agreed with the statement that "The war in Iraq has stretched the U.S. military dangerously thin."

you don't understand bush's genius -
in ten years
and ten trillion dollars
and ten million deaths,
we will have "won"!

yes, there will be no more "america",
but bush's vision will be manifest!

why is everyone so short sighted!
why can't anyone ever embrace a genius in his time?!

Pan has done more to undermine our national security than any group of adversaries we face.

And the very sad thing is that some people still believe that the Republican Party is strong on national security.

Five years ago Dick Chency told the nation we would be welcomed in Iraq as "liberators." How did that work out? The Military Industrial Complex has their never-ending war at the cost of $12 billion a month. I have heard "conservatives" anger at a concept they accuse "liberals" of espousing - "redistribution of wealth" - yet how more redistributed can our wealth be than it has been at the hands of the "conservatives?" The Military has absorbed the most, followed by the uncontrolled Oil, Healthcare and Telecom industries. They thrive, while the American Dream dies.

I think you and a whole bunch of people just didn't quite get what the Vice-President meant at the time about being greeted as liberators and as a result are off the mark in your criticism of Mr. Cheney.
My understanding of what he meant was because of the invasion we would be feted and celebrated here at home as liberators and heroes of the MIC. Hope this little clarification helped.

Ahh, padewan, a $12-billion-a-month cost, to you, is $4,629.63 per SECOND in gross INCOME to me.

I am a Corporation. I have the same rights and privileges under the Constitution as any citizen ... so decided the Supreme Court by virtue of Not Deciding. And because I am plugged into this income stream and diverting an appropriate sum of it to each Member of Congress ... I believe that's somewhere around $160,000 per person per day but you'll have to ask "my people" about the current figure. Anyway, blather all you want to, to whomever you think you elected ... they don't hear anyone but me.

Katrina, highway bridges, health care, all these things really do cost money, you see. But very little "defense" money actually leaves the Beltway, or needs to. Everybody gets his cut. Kick in the draft real soon now and we'll have no shortage of "personnel" to help all the mercenaries we've hired.

When does it end? When we've had World War Three and what's left of your country is lying on the floor, I suppose. I don't really care... the world is full of countries and full of greedy men. That's why I call myself "multi-national."

---

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

"We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together."

Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, January 17, 1961.

Iraq War's Cost: Loss Of US Power, Prestige And Influence
____________________________________________________

Ahh, but nearly half of Americans now believe the "surge" is working and that things are going well in Iraq. But as we all know, it has nothing to do with reality. It's the "perception" of American voters that counts, and the shaping of that perception seldom has anything to do with reality.

"nearly half of Americans now believe the "surge" is working and that things are going well in Iraq"

Doesn't this point to a lack of a functioning analytical thinking process in the people who believe this? At no point has "how" the surge is working been addressed; what are the illusive benchmarks? If the people of Iraq are still dying and displaced, still living in fear, still without basic life support, still without government, still hate the American occupation, then I can't believe the people of Iraq would agree with the neocon definition of "working."

And it came to pass that the World at large slowly informed the Americans of the one inalienable TRUTH to which they lacked exposure; viz. that " Americans are Dumb..."!

It is an illegal occupation, not a war. Please do not puppet the Thought Police's propaganda.

Iraq was attacked for many interests, none of which had anything to do with the security of the United States.

One million innocent civilians have been murdered, Hitler style.

There is no question, based on facts, that the defense and foreign policies of the Republicans have been a disaster. Driven by the NeoCon (PNAC : http://www.newamericancentury.org/index.html ) agenda, Bush and Cheney have given us the worst debacle in several decades. Some view the long-term consequences of this debacle direr than of any previous war.

It has devastated America’s moral authority abroad, increased the number of terrorists, caused massive death and suffering to millions, diminished America’s prestige by shameless acts such as torture, made the Middle East and the world a more dangerous place than ever before, set a shameless precedent for unprovoked (pre-emptive) war, caused death and injury to tens of thousand American soldiers, wasted over $1.5 trillion, contributed heavily to the decline of our economy, and all this to satisfy the depraved goal of a few ( http://www.newamericancentury.org/statementofprinciples.htm ) seeking “benevolent hegemony” and world domination, while mutilating the long cherished American values of peaceful coexistence and justice.

Sadly, not just McCain, but one of our most prominent Democrats, Hillary Clinton, has consistently supported these NeoCon policies.

We as a country may have lost all of that, but what is important to Chimpy McFlightsuit, the Neo Clowns and those who support them is "HEY what about all those war profiteers and their profits, not bad eh?"

Not to mention of course Chimpy's BFF the Oil Shieks in the Mid East.

THEY LOVE his policies.

Under Bush the rich got obscenely richer, the poor got neglected and the middle class is being beaten down to serfdom.

But Hey, check out those mega yachts his buddies are buying for every day of the week,

WHY ISN'T ANYONE TALKING ABOUT THE WINTER SOLDIER TESTIMONY THAT IS GOING ON THIS WEEKEND IN WHICH IRAQ WAR VETERANS ARE SPEAKING OUT ABOUT EXACTLY THESE ISSUES, ABOUT THE THINGS THEY HAVE DONE, HAVE SEEN DONE, ABOUT HOW THEY'VE BEEN TRAINED TO SEE THE IRAQI PEOPLE AS SUBHUMAN, REFERRING TO THEM AS "HAJIS," ABOUT THE BREAKDOWN OF THE AMERICAN MILITARY THAT HAS RESULTED FROM THIS HORRIBLE, ILLEGAL WAR. LISTEN TO THE TESTIMONY: http://ivaw.org/ CALL OR WRITE YOUR SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVES TO DEMAND THAT HEARINGS BE HELD ON CAPITAL HILL SO THAT EVERYONE WILL LEARN ABOUT THIS!

Not to mention the draft that will be necessary to support McCain's 100-year war.
