Keith Richards: Still Smoking Weed "All The Time" And Worrying For Winehouse

In an exclusive interview for The Mail on Sunday's Live magazine, 'Keef' spoke frankly of his own drug-taking.

The guitarist - who inspired Johnny Depp's character Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates Of The Caribbean - said he still listens to his old blues heroes such as Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry and Jimmy Reed.

Asked which modern artists he rated, he said: "There's only one person. That girl Amy.

"Mind you, that girl isn't going to be around long unless she sorts herself out pretty quick. Amy's got to get smart."

Richards, 64, said he did not expect her to listen. He said: "I'm not a preacher. But I've been there and you have to pass it on."

The former heroin addict admitted he still "smokes weed all the damn time" and said he was once so high on drugs he let a firework burn his finger to the bone.

Comparing smoking weed to whatever it is that Winehouse does is silly and ignorant. I smoke weed and live quite a productive life. If I did half of what Winehouse did I'd be . . . well I'd be as fucked up as she is and probably wouldn't be able to hold down the simplest of jobs.

Im just curious, why is Winehouse such a big thing? I watched her perform on the Brit awards last week, and she is just horrible. And Im pretty liberal on musicians, I mean, I like Syd Barrett , mojo nix and skid roper, and more. I have no problem with people who sing bad. Its people how cant sing that I have problems with. and she cant. At least she couldnt on the Brit awards. I havent heard much else from her and I do know how studios can take a sick cat and make it sound wonderful. But that doesnt mean the cat can sing.

The big mistake made by people who admire is Keith Richards is that they think they can be Keith Richards. Some of them have ended up dead (Gram Parsons comes to mind.) I saw the Stones in October 2006 and thought to myself that Keith might be the happiest man in the world. But he is a freak of nature, kind of like Nolan Ryan was to baseball. Nobody should take their cues from him. Even he would tell you that.
