Erica Jong was on "Reliable Sources" this morning in the second segment discussing the coverage of the Eliot Spitzer story (it was top of the show, of course, complete with sexy bikini/topless-ish pics and Howie Kurtz's voiceover: "As New York governor Eliot Spitzer resigns over a sex scandal, has the coverage turned salacious?" Answer: Yes! Wheee, hooker story!). In particular, Jong was on to discuss the wanton, reckless, uninhibited...discussion on the talk shows and cable nets, incredulous that so many people felt it was their place to judge, opine, psychoanalyze or otherwise comment on a private marriage, as well as the decision of Silda Spitzer to stand by her man at not one but two press conferences. Jong took particular issue with Dr. Laura Schlesinger, who claimed on the Today show that Silda Spitzer she held women "accountable" for "tossing out perfectly good men by not treating them with the love and kindness and respect and attention they need" (which she had previously defined as seeking to "make him feel like a man, to make him feel like a success, to make him feel like our hero").

Jong thought that was crap, and had little patience for the other "experts" trotted out on the telly: "I'm not a shrink. I'm a lowly novelist and poet. But I will say that all these shrinks who are going on TV and talking about Eliot Spitzer should be disbarred, or whatever they do to shrinks. They should have their licenses taken away. An ethical shrink does not go on TV and psychoanalyze people she or he has not met. So I'm horrified by this." She also wasn't impressed by how the media had jumped all over it, from Spitzer's family to the many-monikered Ashley Alexandra Dupré : "Here is a very sad young woman of 22 being splashed all over the tabloid press, so it's not very nice to her, it's not very nice to Eliot Spitzer's children, it's not very nice to his wife. It's just an attempt to sell tabloid papers." (NY Post state editor Fred Dicker, who had been on previously, would probably have disagreed, since he thought the racy pics of Dupré from Friday's edition were both "attractive" and "remarkable"). ETP couldn't help thinking that Jong was pretty remarkable — a good guest to have weigh in on this, and a feisty one. Oh yes, she has opinions on Republicans, too, Howie Kurtz, and you asked — so don't you be trying to wrap up the segment. Vid below:

Also discussed following the Spitzer coverage: Barack Obama and Jeremiah Wright, and the upcoming Iraq War five-year anniversary.

Update: I ought to have remembered to add this earlier. My bad. Howie Kurtz did a post-segment correction: "A quick note. Erica Jong said earlier in the program that Eliot Spitzer was the first Democratic governor in 40 years. She must obviously have meant 14 years, since Mario Cuomo was in the state house in Albany."

Thanks for this Rachel ... you might think about forwarding this on to some of HuffPo's other bloggers, specifically Bonnie Fuller, who posted a piece titled "Eliot Spitzer's Biggest Challenge - Winning Back the Trust of His Daughters!" Ms. Fuller laments how unfair the whole situation is to the Spitzer daughters, then posts a 10 PICTURE SLIDE SHOW of the Spitzer family. Also, the article was posted under Entertainment ... either way, keep up the good fight Rachel.

Leave her alone. She has done nothing. She will suffer the same fate as Hillary Clinton. She will be excoriated for standing by a man she obviously loves and will be branded as being too easy, and ultimately dishonest, and untruthful herself for forgiving the sinner. She is a big girl and knows what lies ahead. The sad, tragic reality is the age of his daughters and the media treatment of their parents. The media couldnt wait to get right out front and humiliate them all. SNL totally disregarded these kids and just moved right ahead with the humiliation and degradation. I do not excuse the man responsible, but is it a requirement to humiliate the family? Where are all the grownups in media? What happened to discretion and etiquette. We have so much to be worried about in this country and while wae were swift-boating another fine man, a twit and his emmissaries took over our country, killed 4000 of our young people and ruined the value of our currency and made illiteracy laughable. I feel so bad for my country and so sorry for the values that are now extinct...........

Dr. Laura is a complete nutcase. She's not even qualified as a therapist. Her degree is in something completely different.

I do get a kick out of her from time to time simply because she's so outrageously opinionated and silly.

Erica is right - it's NO ONE'S business. How can anyone have an opinion or analyse this when they don't know them.

Unbelievable.

These people really need to get a life if all they do is worry about someone else's life.

What strickes me about the case is the feigned surprise of the media "experts." Oh no, a career man with the perfect family is secretly seeing prostitutes. How shocking. Why would he do that?

I am not saying it is the right thing to do to cheat on your spouse, but the Spitzer affair tells us something about how marriage as a romantic ideal is a rather new idea and rarely practiced. In the "classic" patriarchical upper class sense, Spitzer did what a husband is supposed to do: produce children, care for his family, keep his affairs secret.

Some couples manage to keep their relationship romantic and sexually fulfilling even after children and age intervene. But most don't. Some people accept it and value the companionship that comes with an enduring relation, others get divorced, and still other people with the means and connections go out and have affairs or purchase sex. It's ridiculous to blame the wife as that witch Laura Schlesinger does, and it's equally ridiculous to overanalyze Spitzer's behavior from afar. The truth here seems to be much simpler.

'Leave Silda alone!'

Ha! It has been reported Silda and Eliot slept in separate bedrooms. It's very simple. He wanted to get laid. She wasn't putting out. What's the mystery here? I'm sure he didn't like the idea of not having sex for the rest of his life (or until impotence set in). There's only so much a hand can do (if you know what I mean). Who knows? Silda could've had a little sumthin' sumthin' on the side herself. We may never know since women tend to be a bit more discreet.

One thing Erica Jong got right is that we don't know the state of their marriage, especially one that came with privilege: being a well-kept woman, private schooling for the children, overseas vacations, unlimited shopping, etc.. Silda could have been okay with his 'stepping out'. The fact that we wasn't discreet probably annoyed her and the fact that he liked his women trashy most-likely infuriated her. But, it is what it is.

I have always wanted to know why someone as unattractive and inane as Jong, is considered a sex expert. Anyone would think she invented sex. The sexually explicit sections in Fear of Fying were tedious, shabby and boring. Perhaps she should send the Spitzers a bottle of champagne.

I think Erica gets to comment on being in the public eye rather than as a sex expert and Fear of Flying just changed everything, for the better too.

Frankly, Erica Jong's performance was pretty spotty. Whereas there is absolutely no question that Laura Schlessinger's comments relative to the Spitzers (and I guess wives in general) were moronic, Jong goes on to psychoanalyze Spitzer (had a sex addiction, didn't have an adequately developed super-ego, must've been insane, bipolar, etc.) just before railing against those who go on TV and psychoanalyze these politicians (I'll give her a pass though because she did admit to not being a psychiatrist, and therefore, we can assume she wasn't offering a professional judgment but merely theorizing).

Also, first democratic governor to go to Albany in 40 years? Is Mario Cuomo so easily forgotten?

Oh my bad I meant to add and clarify, as Howie Kurtz did following - that she must have mispoken and said 40 instead of 14 years. I will add Howie's quote up top. And yes you are quite right re: bipolar/sex addiction etc., though she did have the disclaimer. I did think it was a good segment, sort of more direct than many have been and she was feisty. But that point is well taken.
