BAGHDAD — Sen. John McCain's trip to Iraq, which began Sunday in Baghdad, coincides with a number of milestones.

The Iraq war, to which the probable Republican presidential nominee has linked his political future, will be five years old Thursday. Around that date, the U.S. military is likely to suffer its 4,000th death in the war. And McCain's arrival Sunday coincided with the 20th anniversary of a horrific chemical weapons attack in northern Iraq.

McCain met with Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh and planned to meet with Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, according to the U.S. Embassy. Further details of McCain's visit, which had been anticipated, were not being released for security reasons, the embassy said.

Before leaving the United States, McCain, one of the foremost proponents of the March 2003 U.S.-led invasion, said the trip to the Middle East and Europe was for fact-finding purposes, not a campaign photo opportunity.

But he expressed public worries that militants in Iraq might try to influence the November general election.

"Yes, I worry about it," he said, responding to a question during a campaign appearance in Pennsylvania. "And I know they pay attention, because of the intercepts we have of their communications."

McCain, the senior Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, was accompanied by Sens. Joe Lieberman, an independent from Connecticut, and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., two top supporters of his presidential ambitions.

The weeklong trip will take McCain to Israel, Britain and France, and include his first meeting with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. He also is expected to meet with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and other Israeli officials.

Story continues below

His focus in Iraq was thought to be the drop in sectarian violence and U.S. and civilian casualties since last summer. Exactly what was discussed, however, remained unclear since numerous telephone calls to aides traveling with McCain went unanswered.

Elsewhere, Kurds in northern Iraq commemorated the anniversary of the chemical weapons attack in Halabja, near the Iranian border, with solemn observances. The streets were empty and heavily patrolled by Iraqi security forces.

Saddam Hussein ordered the 1988 attack as part of a scorched-earth campaign to crush a Kurdish rebellion in the north, which was seen as aiding Iran near the end of its war with Iraq. Saddam was executed for other crimes against humanity before he could face trial for the attacks.

McCain's trip to Iraq is his eighth. Last November, he met with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki during the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday.

On a visit last April, the Arizona senator criticized news reports he said focused unfairly on violence, and said Americans were not getting a "full picture" of progress in the security crackdown in the capital.

McCain was combative toward reporters' questions in the heavily guarded Green Zone, and responded testily to a question about his comment that it was safe to walk some Baghdad streets. He later acknowledged traveling with armed U.S. military escorts.

Violence has dropped throughout the capital since, with an influx of some 30,000 additional U.S. soldiers sent to Iraq last year. The U.S. military has said attacks have fallen by about 60 percent since last February.

Still, violence continues in some parts of the country, according to reports from police officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak to the media.

On Sunday, a parked car bomb exploded in western Baghdad's Mansour neighborhood, killing one person and wounding two others. Two civilians and nine others were wounded in Mosul when a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest, police said. A roadside bomb killed another person in the northwestern city.

Just outside Baqouba, the capital of restive Diyala province, three people were killed in clashes between police and a faction of radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army, police said. In the city itself, gunmen killed a city hall employee, police said.

Police also found the bullet-riddled bodies of at least 16 people in Baghdad, Muqdadiyah, Mosul and the southern cities of Basra and Kut, where Shiite militia violence has been on the rise.

In Washington, two of McCain's colleagues who support Democrats for president, said senators _ including candidate McCain _ have the right to visit various parts of the world.

But, said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif: "I think it would have probably have been better if he took members who were not so closely identified with his campaign. But this is indicated to be a congressional visit.

"Obviously the world's going to watch it, and we'll know whether it's exploited for other reasons. I don't believe it will be, but we'll see," Feinstein, who supports New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton for president, said on CNN's "Late Edition." She appeared with Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., who supports Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.

John McCain, veteran of Vietnam, former POW, champion of the troops, etc. needs to listen to the Winter Soldier Testimony that is going on this weekend (go to http://ivaw.org/ ) and be required to publicly comment on the experiences of these brave Americans who have had the courage to step up and tell the world what they have done, seen, and experienced. If he really supports the troops, what about these troops?!

McCain AKA Bush III, believes that not enough people have died in Bush Jr's illegal war.

Where is Cheney? Wasn't he going to settle the peace accord with Israel and Palestine? We all know how this man hates war (too much money to be made) So, maybe they should send the Jewish politicians over there to talk about "peace". McCain is a bootlicker for the Bush administration. He is too old for the job, too sick (look at his cheek) He would not stand up for his daughter when Rove/Bush smeared her, what do you think he would do for us? Where is that daughter by the way? Seems to be kept in the background.

His youngest daughter is in this thing called "high school". She has to attend "classes", or she won't "graduate". Maybe you didn't attend school, so you don't know about these things.

Also, she's being kept away from the attention of people like you who enjoy attacking her family because of her skin color.

Gee, I can remember things like "vacation days" "rececess" where I had days off. Is she behind on her studies? Where was she when her daddy had the bbq?

So sorry you missed the "Reading Comprehension" classes in HS. Where did I mention race? You, Bush and Rove are the ones who mention that. How much are you paid to be a repug. hack? Enjoy it, my friend, it is coming to a screeching halt SOON.

I wouldn't put my daughter out there either, but to be fair, Colmore wasn't attacking McCain because of his daughter's skin color. That was done by the Bush campaign who conducted push polls asking voters if they would vote for McCain if they knew he had a black daughter. You strike me as very knowledgeable, and I'm sure you're aware of this.

"Also, she's being kept away from the attention of people like you who enjoy attacking her family because of her skin color."

Rove is at the heart of Bush's VICIOUS smear job on John McCain in the 2000 South Carolina primary...spreading the rumor that McCain's adopted Bangladeshi daughter is black and illegitimate and his wife a drug addict.

JulieSA, look no further than your HERO Bush for "attacking her family because of her skin color"!!!

Stay safe, healthy and happy,

I wonder, will he take a trip outside the green zone in a tank this time and declare everthing is wonderful and safe? Maybe he will have a reality check and realize we are stuck in a civil war, I seroiously doubt that he will though. I do beleive he will make some totally detached from reality statement since he is detached from reality, kind of like Regan was.

McCain's trip to Iraq provides him a way to get into the news with press conferences and releases where he intones Bushisms about how much progress has been made, etc., etc.

But the trip may come to backfire on him. There has been a jump in sectarian violence over the past two months as some Shi'i militas are ignoring Sadre's cease fire and some Sunni's who allied with the US against AQ are not seeing any political benefit from the Maliki government for their cooperation.

If the increase in violence turns into a trend of more Iraqi and American deaths, the tapes of McCain's statements on this trip will become perfect footage for Democratic campaign ads.

This visit was not a surprise. As noted in the Brooks post, "details of McCain's visit, which had been anticipated, were not being released for security reasons..." An anticipated visit should not be labled a "surprise" visit by anyone with one or more functioning brain cells. Call it what it is, another "photo op/ disinformation session meant to create a counter reality that sustains the illusion or myth of American justness, competence, and strength in a military and foreign policy mess of its own creation for the purpose of justifying the lies (big and small) that are the foundation of the establishment and to promote one of its annointed successors in the leadership chain." How lame must we be to accept this?

What do you bet he won't even mention the dozen or so US soldiers who died this past week? McCain is gearing up for the war he wants to put his name on: Iran.

Does McCain's trip surprise anyone? Just another photo-op.....so Bush-lite.

What truly bothers me, and this insight comes from a troop that has been in Iraq, is that when McCain (or others) show up and want to "walk the streets" - the troops have to put theirselves in harms way in preparation for the 'photo-op'.

Let's hope he took a large umbrella and plenty of sun-bloc. I anticipate that he will revise his estimate on how long we will remain in Iraq--originally he said another 100 yrs. He must think republicans are to remain in control for at least a century. My estimate is the economy can't support this phony "war" another year without total collapse, but MCcain did say he knew very little about economics. His strong suit is warmongering for the continuance of support for the killing field and money pit in Iraq.

Exactly. Once the Bush Depression hits full stride, we'll be out of Iraq like a shot and forget about it completely, no matter what happens there and no matter what President McBush wants. We'll have other things to worry about. And what, you may ask, will have happened to the great, eternal American love for Iraqi freedom that has made us willing to pay any price, bear any burden? That will vanish just as quickly as any dead marketing campaign for any other lousy, discontinued product.

"And what, you may ask, will have happened to the great, eternal American love for Iraqi freedom that has made us willing to pay any price, bear any burden?"

In addition to "spreading freedom" in Iraq, aren't we ALSO "fighting AL-QAEDA there, so we won't have to fight AL-QAEDA here"?

Just as we were "fighting COMMUNISTS in Vietnam, so we wouldn't have to fight COMMUNISTS here"?

I don't seem to recall our "fighting the COMMUNISTS here" WAR, after we "Democrats?" cut & ran from the IMMORAL WAR in Vietnam? I must have slept through our GREAT WAR WITH COMMUNISTS on American soil?!

It's the OIL, stupid!!!

He's there because he cares...

about winning the election as much as he does breathing. Although he nearly washed out of military school, was shot down on one of his first missions over the nam, he still fancies himself a soldier and wants you to think he's a commander in chief. And in comparison to Hillary and Obama, maybe he is.

But now that I know Obama for what he truly is, I'll write-in Hillary if I have to.

McCain and Obama will never be my choice.

Perfect exaples of how McCain will win, more of the same for the next 4 years. Why don't you two get over yourselves and think what about what is best for the country and not what is your dream. If you want to continue the way we have for the last 7+ years fine vote for McCain or don't vote at all, or write in a candidate who is not running, any one of these tatics will ensure a McCain win. On the other hand if you want change then vote and vote against McCain vote for whomever the Democratic candidate is, becasue if you do not you ensure a McCain win and in my opinion we all lose then.

But the Democratic candidates enjoy their petty bickering so much that they don't care about keeping up to speed on the military situation in Iraq. In the meantime, McCain's doing the kind of prep work he has to do in order ready himself for the day he becomes Commander in Chief. Are Obama or Hillary dedicated to doing this kind of prep work? Their actions speak much louder than their words.

NC--When the Dems take the House, the Senate and the White hOuse--Iraq is O-V-E-R.

We the People need to spend that kind of money in the US--not throw it away on US contractors and a country that Bush destroyed by lying to We the People as well as to Congress. The blood and the failure is on the hands of the Rethugs--and that includes Colin Powell. Wonder how he feels about the role he played? Too bad there's no "do-over" in War and in raping the US Treasury.

The current economic crisis is the result of 40 years of Republican deregulation, and a War with no Purpose except to line the pockets of Oil Companies and War Contractors.

War is EVIL. Stop spending the future on a War for Oil. And stop bailing out companies like Bear Stearns--really, really rich folks who keep shuttling paper between them. They can take the hit--let 'em take it and the economy will begin to correct.

Actually, neither Obama nor Clinton say they will withdraw ALL troops from Iraq, just "combat troops". No mention of the majority of troops (and mercenaries), that are there to "protect our interests" (trillions of dollars of oil and gas, to be exploited by "our" multinationals, to the exclusion, if possible, of Europe and Asia).

So, we will have a care-taker occupation, until the radical Republicans return.
For their part, the Republicans will wait 4 years (if necessary) and then take control again, at which point Iran will be in the crosshairs again.

Really? you are that easily duped with a photo op. You know how you find out what is going on in raq? You sit down with the generals at the pentagon discuss it with them in private to get an honest assement. Something GW has not done, strolling through a market place in Bagdad in a flack vest with 200 soldiers standing guard while the press takes you picture does not tell you a damn thing about any situation in Iraq. Reminds me of GW flying over New Orleans and saying it looks bad, and then does nothing to correct it.

He should have done his prep work in 2003.
A little history.
A little Iraqi politics.
A little history on asymetric warfare.
My prior candidate, said it, and its true, there is no military solution, the solution is political.
McCain is old style military, and a flip flopper

Perhaps McCain can stay there and be viceroy of Iraq.
Or perhaps he can assume that title when he's anointed President.
