I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Nita Lowey

One of the big problems with the fact that the Democratic primary process continues to grind on and on and on and on with nothing new on the horizon until Pennsylvania -- unless some other governors would do us all a solid and get caught screwing some whores again -- is that the media is running out of campaign surrogates with whom to talk. The A-Listers have long passed, and the B-Listers all said crazy things about how lucky black people are and how God hates America for Hiroshima. That's why we were saddled with the jowly drone of Bill Bradley today, his voice as dynamic as a bowl of week-old wheat crackers, boring us to tears today on Meet The Press. And yet, this is a net win for the Obama campaign because of the gaffe-filled performance of Nita Lowey for the Clinton campaign.

Highlights? Yeah, we've got them. First up, here's Lowey making the case for Clinton based upon their oft-hyped "some states are more important than other states" strategy. Except she confuses "Ohio" -- which Clinton won -- with Iowa, a state that Obama won back in January and then apparently re-won this week when some Edwards delegates shifted to his side.

LOWEY: Now, you and I both know that no one since 1960 has won the presidency without winning Iowa. We know you have to win Iowa, we have to win Pennsylvania, have to win Florida, they are key states that are critical to getting the number of votes in the electoral college, and I think right now, frankly, it's a tie.

Even better is the answer Lowey attempts to give Russert on the matter of Clinton releasing her tax records, which ends up being long, convoluted, comically inept, evasive, shallow, and then finally bad for the campaign, as she more or less commits them to a firm date of April 15 for the release of these records, after weeks of the campaign using "on or around tax time" as the deadline, which would have bought them the entire month of May.

RUSSERT: Congresswoman Lowey, should Bill and Hillary Clinton release the list of $500 million of donors to the library, the tax returns since they left the White House, and her schedules and records from the National Archives relating to her activities as First Lady so people can make a true judgment about her experience as she's portraying it.

LOWEY: Several points. First of all, it's my understanding that there are 20 years of tax returns in the public view from both Bill and Hillary Clinton. Secondly, in terms of earmarks and transparency, the Democrats have cut earmarks in half and now there has to be a certification next to each earmark that the person who's submitting them will not have any financial interests in that earmark. In terms of the Clinton and the work he's done in the fund raising, I've been to several countries in Africa. I've seen the work of the Clinton Foundation and the positive work he's done for HIV/AIDS. I do believe that the Clintons have a long record of releasing their tax returns and as I understand, that on April 15th, they will release their other records and with regard to the National Archives, that is going -- it's been gone over line by line and it will be released. Was there anything else? I don't remember.

Tune in next week, when Tony Rezko and Geraldine Ferraro perform a pantomime adapted from the Eliot Spitzer wiretaps!

Hopefully-- the intelligent Pennsylvania voters won't be kept away by the assumption of back room deals with the superdelegates---

Notice she avoided the topic of the dirty last minute pardons and the possible smoking gun pointing back at the Clintons. Also the fact that while Hillary was giving the Dubai-ports deal a bloody nose Bill was making tens of millions of dollars brokering the deal in the background. She does not want Americans to be reminded of that again and it's bound to be in those records as well as the multiple off shore bank accounts. Now why would they need those?

Is there any evil in the world the Clinton's are not responsible for?

Neither Bill nor Hillary were reported present on the Ides of March, The assination of Ceaser is difinately not their fault. Otherwise, who knows?

I'm sorry but this is a joke. Obama puts his surrogates out there to make allegations (Bill Bradley on Mcneil Leher) that Bill Clinton "might" have taken bribes (that's what that would be) for pardons. I happen to think he probably did. However isn't it the Obama campaign that in the same breath claims that the Clinton camp is the one dividing the party and living in the past? I hardley think that accusing your most recent POTUS from your party as someone who took bribes to be uniting the party and moving the country forward.

It's also a joke that they keep harping on the tax records. She should release them; however the Obama camp has not released all of theirs either! They now claim they will but they sure didn't for the longest time and gave evasive answers for not releasing them in the past. Now we find out that he really got about a 100 grand more from Rezko (direct or indirect) than they previously admitted to.

I think the Obama camp has been brilliant when it comes to playing dirty (just as Clinton does) without actually getting caught playing dirty.

Way to stick it to Hillary, Nita!! I love it!

That's what Lady Macbeth gets for fucking Lowry over in 2002 when it was her "turn" to run for the Senate seat in NY but she had to step aside for the queen b/c SHE had to be the next senator -- it was one more box to check off on the road to the WH, right?

And now Lowry is getting even by being a lousy spokesperson!! Revenge is so sweet sometimes!

Representative Lowey, bless her heart, she could have done a bit better; but she didn't have a lot to work with. It looked to me as if she'd been given her talking points and was trying to hold on to them with all her mental might. She did mix up a couple of those fly-over states but that's understandable - too many of them start with vowels.

Bradley, on the other hand, was nothing short of superb - cogent, candid, measured, logical and persuasive. Indeed, he looked like a grown-up which is such a rarity in what passes for televised political commentary these days that it was not only not boring it was refreshing. Bradley's sincerity and thoughtfulness seemed to perform a "bombastectomy" on Russert and prevented Lowey from exploiting the Reverend and Rezko matters as the Clinton campaign had surely hoped she would.

Indeed, Bradley was so effective that it wouldn't surprise me if the signs in Denver read Obama/Bradley '08.

I'm sorry. I stopped reading after the first two or three paragraphs when your primary complaint was that the people who are being interviewed don't seem to have enough pzazz to keep you entertained. You, like many other people who write on here, are a living example of why suffrage shouldn't be universal. The impulses your article is premised on are precisely the impulses that for 2000 years political philosophers have pointed to to warn elites of giving too much power to too many individuals.

Please don't vote and stop writing. Maybe there is some simple task you can perform somewhere else. In fact, life in the work force might give you a political education born of the kind of material scarcity that might make you care more about WHAT is being said rather than HOW it is being said and WHO it is being said by.

You're a ridiculous Obama shill, which of course is almost redundant on Huffpo...Lowey was right on all points...you just didn't like that she wasn't hawking Mr. Hope and Change...too bad...many of us see nothing in him worth voting for...other than he would make a good used car salesman.

When Republican candidates who represent Big Business get elected with the votes of working class people who then sit back and say "OK, Now that I voted for you, make sure that you protect all of my Democratic Party sponsored programs such as, unemployment insurance, union benefits, Social Security, etcetera, what do you expect the politicians to think of the voters?

McCain is the "only choice" for continued warfare in Iraq for 100 years and continued tax cuts for the wealthy and continued torture paractices. For all those who love George Bush, vote for John McCain. He is Bush-lite.

I lost count of Lowey's blunders after she used the Republican term "Democrat agenda;" missed the Clinton memo that said to call superdelegates "automatic delegates;" missed Clinton's repeated arguments to the contrary and said that there was almost no difference between Clinton's and Obama's health care plans; and, with a straight face, said that the candidates should have a debate on the issues instead of Obama making attacks against Clinton. Holee Molee.

In contrast, Bradley was classy Ivy League debate sociey all the way, eschewing cable tv attack soundbites in favor of calm, slowly spoken, reasoned points that took apart Hillary Clinton on everything from honesty to competence.

I notice more pundits too are using the pejorative "Democrat" this or that. It is poor grammar to begin with, but it is funny how this conservative phraseology always seems to enter mainstream lexicon and rarely the other way around. I guess this process is how the word "liberal" became a dirty word.

Poor old Hillary, if only she could convince SOMEONE she wasn't a conniving hag who will say and do anything for more power. Even her supporters think she's a dirty pool ball buster, they seem to like that.

Looks like she's convinced roughly half of the electorate of the Democratic party.
What does that say about your analysis?
Do you actually believe she is being helf afloat for some artificial reason other than her popularity?

What's with all of this constant talk about how unpopular she is despite all the evidence to the contrary. Some people talk as if she is some witch that is using spells to keep herself in a race that is, despite her magic, actually over.

I think nivek needs to work on his vocabulary. Use of the terms "hag" and "ball buster" tell us more about nivek than about HRC.

This from an Obama supporter.

This women had a hard job, try to defend the un-defendable just like the Hillary campaign. If this race was in reverse and Sen. Obama was Hllary this race would have been over already. Just goes to show the establishment is the establishment, change is NOT their agenda. Sen. Obama is a threat Hillary is not.

I didn't think she was that bad. Sure, she said Iowa instead of Ohio. But I thought she was rather pleasant. Some of the Clinton surrogates have rubbed my the wrong way and made me cringe. Ms. Lowey did the best at playing the hand she was dealt with.

The problem with ANY Clinton surrogate at this point is they have illogical arguments 1) Big state wins 2) Florida & Michigan primaries were "fair" and "accurate". 3) Superdelegates shouldn't make their decisions based on the will of the people.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:26 AM on 03/17/2008

Agreed, she actually did as well as could be expected considering what little she had to work with in terms of legitimate arguments in defense of the clinton position.

Isnt it said that a president is only as good as the people they surround themselves with?
Well if the people who Clinton has in her campaign are any indication to the people she will choose as advisor's if she makes it to the white house, then it pretty obvious we are in deep doo doo is she does win.

Hint- Most are former Clinton people.

Sorry but neither has the market on dirty corrupt advisors.

But I'm sure that all the ex-Clinton advisors working for Obama are somehow squeeky clean now aren't they?

I mainly care about the policy agenda that is passed. See, rhetoric and justifications lie. Explanations lie. Policy doesn't.

The policy of invading Iraq was wrong wrong wrong and could not have been made right by any inspirational language or anything else.

When the primary focus of the people is the bullshit that comes out of politicians mouths rather than policy - this is what we get. We get a raced based on personality. Both Obama and Clinton have nearly identical policy platforms. What do you really CARE which one of them gets elected? Is it because you vote for a reason other than to see certain laws pass? Oh - you vote out of a need for leadership, inspiration, hope? Oh - you look UP to politicians? Seek therapy.
