Obama's Church Accuses Media Of Character Assassination

The Chicago church attended by Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) issued a statement Sunday contending that coverage of his pastor's inflammatory statements amounted to character assassination and "an attack on ... the history of the African American church."

Obama condemned inflammatory statements by the church's retiring pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., after they circulated on YouTube last week and were played repeatedly by cable news channels.

Wright, condemning society as racists, said, "God [expletive] America" and referred to the "U.S. of KKK-A."

The statement begins: "Nearly three weeks before the 40th commemorative anniversary of the murder of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.'s character is being assassinated in the public sphere because he has preached a social gospel on behalf of oppressed women, children and men in America and around the globe."

This Should be all Over the News Tomorrow

A old article on Obama at church the day he said he wasn't, he was seen there by a reporter doing a story on the church.

Here it is http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2007/8/8/194812.shtml

Jim Davis
Thursday, Aug. 9, 2007

In fact, Obama was in attendance at the church when these statements were made on July 22

This is just the the start, more people will come foward with their story on obama. This next week will be great, when Bill O Reilly, Sean Hanntiy and Fox news is done with Obama, well it reminds of a song from Boys II Men "END of the Road" its almost time to celabrate.

The article is misleading. Was it written in Aug. 07 or now. It does not seem credible because it speaks to issues that have occurred in the last few weeks.

You remember sep 11th when I guarantee you , like me were in shock and saddened by all the deaths. Preacher man on the other hand was saying they who died deserved it...

Now all we need is a clip of Obama busting a move in the church he got busted in. I can't see that it matters. Hillary's one---and strongest---claim to the Nom is that America isn't ready for a black president. (There was a good debate on this on another thread earlier.) All that she and her kind have been sewing forth lately to remind us that Obama is black, was designed to stir up the anti-black feeling that she believes exists in whole swathes of the country. Once stirred up, she can take it to the powers that be in the DNC, as evidence of the truth of her claim. And say, "See? They aren't ready. Now, do you want to win in November, or not?" And they do.
And if they demand more evidence, she will provide it. Until they believe her.
And that;s how Hillary Rodham Clinton is going to win the Nom.
Just a theory,
hope it's wrong,
bet it's right.

I wish Barack would just up and walk right the blank out of that 'church', and tell them to worry about the next Kingdom while he works on his Candidacy. Church and state, church and state, there's other countries that have SERIOUS problems with this stuff, and I don't think that the United States should.
If ya wanna vote, vote, if you wanna pray, pray, but pray-vote, vote-praying, preying on Believers trying to get them to vote for this or that, doesn't compute. Where DOES all the collection plate money go, again? Hmmmm....questions, many questions...

Show your true bigoted characters America as the world laughs out loud at the attempt to derail the presidential campaign of Obama sorely on the basis of the clor of his skin and not because of the content of his character. Sad to see this really.

I really think Obama's church should have let this one pass It will just keep it stirred up, and the longer it is, the greater the chance of an irrepairable mistake. Obama has been lucky thus far: the mud being dragged up isn't really sticking. All that could change.

I've heard the sermons of T.D. Jakes and other prominent African-American ministers, and I have to say that not one of their sermons contained the hatred and vitriol that is displayed in Wright's "sermons".

I think it is very disingenuous to try and lump all African-American ministers together in this instance. Wright chose to rant, rave, and use God's name in vain in the pulpit and now he has to deal with the way others choose to see him. As I have said many times, it is hypocritical for Americans to overlook the fact that Sen. Robert Byrd (D), was a Ku Klux Klansman, yet condemn Sen. Obama for the views and feelings of his minister.

I heard no hatred and no vitriol "displayed in Wright's "sermons". But, what do I know? I am an atheist and, therefore, no hateful.

If you are taliking about "Goddamn America" thingy, I found that to be a very powerful expression. I felt the one about Hillary never having being called a "nigger" was also a masterpiece. It said in one line what can take pages to write. Just beautiful. I recall that Mohammad Ali had said something similar - "No Vietcong never called me no nigger", or something to that effect. It was powerful.

On the goddamn America line, I am shocked! Shocked! I tell you to hear such a line to come out of the mouth of a man representing a race held down for 400 years in this country.

The crime of white supremacy is twice as old as this nation, and more powerful.

White folk ought to get over their bad selves. No black should be criticized for being resentful of the racism that is America now or two hundred years ago.

Have you heard a sermon from MLK. See MLK speech warning America. This speech was considered radical in the 1960's.

Here's the deal: Obama's church and its new pastor has a choice to make:

They can make this all about defending their honor, and the honor of their now retiring firebrand of a pastor. That ought to keep this thing in the news cycle for the next week or two - and cost Obama about a zillion votes in the remaining state contests.

Or - they can decide that electing Obama is their big goal right now - and sit down and shut up. Then they can erect a monument to the Reverend Doctor Wright AFTER Obama beats McCain.

From a Sun Tzu/Art of War point of view, it's a no-brainer really.

I think they can and should do both. I would rather see this thing play out, and not be left hanging. Besides, it is the right thing to do. They shouldn't let the likes of Hannity and Limbaugh intimidate them. That's not the way to handle bullies.

No - you're wrong on this one. It's one of those "win the battle, lose the war" strategies.

And frankly, they won't even "win the battle". Obama's already disavowed and denounced the remarks - so even if you think they're cool as hell, who cares?

And forget about the right wingnuts being a problem. Hillary will be glad to have this thing replayed all week, and next week too, so those folks in North Alabama (aka rural PA) can get all their stereotypical prejudices reinforced - and she can take the states by 20% or so.

Nope - strategic thinking requires getting these people the hell off the stage now - and fixing any bruised egos later. That's what Obama's people would like to do - let's see if they can pull it off.

Well, Rev. Wright doesn't hate people. He does hate racism, mysogeny, homophobia, domestic violence, exploitation and neglect of the poor, etc. YOu know, like Jesus told us to do.

“It saddens me to see news stories reporting such a caricature of a congregation that has been such a blessing to the UCC’s Wider Church mission,” said the Rev. John H. Thomas, UCC general minister and president, in a released statement. “ … It’s time for us to say ‘No’ to these attacks and declare that we will not allow anyone to undermine or destroy the ministries of any of our congregations in order to serve their own narrow political or ideological ends.”

Thank God Rev. Thomas spoke out. I expect that he will be one in a long line of theologians who will have the courage to debunk this truly obscene twisting of Rev. Wright's works. When Rev. Wright retired, luminaries from around the world were lined up to give tribute to his wonderful work. If you think you know everything, or even anything important, about Rev. Wright or Trinity from the hatchet job you saw on cable TV, you are misled and mistaken. Take some time to do some independent research and marvel at the contrast between anti-Obama spin and reality. Progressive people of many political stripes, including the now-silent Bill and Hillary, have been glad to know Rev. Wright and happy to associate themselves with him. Show some leadership, Hill - even if you feel the need to hedge/reject and renounce, cop to your past relationship with Rev. Wright!

I wish you could spend more time here at HuffPost and present yout views. There is just too much misunderstanding here about Obama's Church and his pastor.

Even in that video that is being circulated, I can clearly understand what Reverend Wright is talking about in a very powerful way. But, I being an atheist, am unable to judge the "spiritual" part of his message, if any.

I think you can provide a great service here at HuffPost.

It's a good thing he's keeping his yap shut about this whole thing, and leaving Hillary's sleaze-meisters to do the dirty work.
