SNL Shows Blatant Anti-Spitzer Bias, Endorses Obama

In its fourth straight live program since returning to air after the writers strike, "Saturday Night Live" is once again shaking up the political race with its blatant, unmitigated bias — this time with its blatant bias against Eliot Spitzer, whom it portrayed as someone involved in prostitution. Oh, wait, Spitzer was involved with prostitution. I guess that means SNL isn't biased, it just runs sketches based on existing political situations and exaggerates them for comic effect! Whew, glad to have settled that. But to those who were wringing their hands over a perceived bias in favor of Hillary Clinton of late, fret not — last night's program not only featured a full-on endorsement of Barack Obama, it also completely derailed the candidacy of John McCain by portraying him as old. Damn you for thwarting our democracy, SNL!

For those of you who missed it, there actually was a controversy over an ostensible pro-Clinton bias on SNL after three shows which in turn depicted Barack Obama getting preferential treatment from the press, being a weak and inexperienced president, and what many perceived to be an endorsement from guest host Tina Fey, who said that if Clinton was a bitch, well, so was she, because bitches "got stuff done" and that "bitch was the new black." Clinton herself was also welcomed to the show for a well-received cameo. Sure, Obama had been on in November, but timing is everything. Just to be safe, this week they gave Fred Armisen's Obama and Amy Poehler's Hillary a rest, instead inviting 30 Rock star and former cast member Tracy Morgan on to address the week's turbulent race issues involving Geraldine Ferraro and Obama pastor Jeremiah Wright. Said Morgan, in a direct nod to Tina Fey: "Bitch may be the new black, but black is the new president, bitch."

That clip plus the Spitz n' Silda cold open, Spitzer jokes on "Weekend Update," and a fantastic McCain impression by Darrell Hammond are below. Next week, just to mess with your head, SNL will be re-running the infamous Tina Fey episode that started it all. Good luck trying to figure it all out, Pennsylvania voters. Watch:

Spitzer & Associates:

Tracy Morgan on "Weekend Update":

Weekend Update: "Really" with Seth & Amy:

NBC Special Report: John McCain

For those who tuned into SNL for the host, Superbad and Knocked Up star Jonah Hill, his very fancy opening monlogue is here and his very impressive Borscht-belt comic tour-de-force is here. Also Mariah Carey was the musical guest, wearing a very short skirt.

Official NBC versions of the clips coming when they are posted online.

Tracy Morgan's delivery of that last line was RIGHTEOUS. But SNL hasn't been funny in years and they are still carrying water for HillBilly so I won't watch it live anymore. Tracy Morgan's guest stint does not make up for the 3am ad or the unfunny debate footage. HillBilly is the one with the mood swings. And every time she lies, she arches her eyebrows, holds them for the duration of the lie and then lowers her eyelids nearly closed. It's her tell. She lies nearly every time she opens her mouth.

The past three weeks of SNL were clearly endorsements of Hillary. This past weekend is hardly and endorsement of Obama. Pull the wool off your eyes.

I guess the McCain impression must have hit a nerve somewhere since it is unviewable.

I actually think this cast itself is very good. I like Fred Armisen, though his Obama impersonation is dreadful (Obama has his flaws, but sounding like Goofy is not one of them). The writing for the SNL weekend updates is puerile. The political humor will never compare to that of the original cast (Dan Aykroyd as Nixon/Dracula . . . Aykroyd and Curtain in Point/Counterpoint . . . that was good stuff).

Sklar is funny enough to be a writer for SNL.

Well, I may be too old to appreciate this cast, but I remember the original SNL cast, and there has never been another one to compare, especially this one. I cannot get excited about anything they do!!!

kroses98, Ditto! The show and the cast for many years was worth staying home for!, Did't know it was still on until seeing all the clips lately; but after watching them, I feel very fortunate I am of the age to have been there at the beginning; what great memories!

Are you kidding! Just wait until the Saturday before the PA primary. Hillary will be back.

This is all about TIMING!

The satirical tone and choice of words in this piece seem to be a put down of BO's supporters suspicions regarding SNL being in the tank for HRC.

"perceived endorsement by Tina Fey". ? Didn't Tina Fey endorse HRC? "Perceived bias" rather than actual. HRC used SNL language and skits repeatedly to support her alllegations of media bias, as far as I know.

Last night's SNL did not balance the equation. In fact using a seemingly loaded Tracy Morgan to endorse BO on SNL was the equivalent of the previous weeks' putdowns of Obama.

Balance, impartiality, and objectivity are not necessary from SNL or others, i.e., you just transparency--clear representations of where one stands.

SNL stated clearly in two articles this week that there was no bias; I did not feel that there was a bias, beyond being biased in favor of the funny. Ergo, my use of the word "perceived" and my copious links to those who perceived the bias and their arguments in support of that position. I think Fey's exhortation to Texas and Ohio voters needs to be taken in context, i.e. as in support of the thesis advanced in her piece, but it is a different sort of "endorsement" than Teddy Kennedy formally announcing at a press conference, and based on those factors I chose my language carefully. The reader is welcome to draw his or her own conclusions, and I have more than provided enough material from which to do so. I thought Tracy Morgan's commentary was terrific and not only had some great lines but some great points -- I predict his comment about Mike Tyson/Robin Givens will be replayed quite a bit tomorrow. To your last point, I don't think there is any doubt about where I stand - I did not find SNL to be biased politically, and from all I know about the show believe strongly that th eonly bias comes from wanting the mterial to be funny. Sketches have to go through several rounds before they make it to air - including dress rehearsal, where the sketches that don't play well to the audience are cut (if you're in NYC and trying to get to SNL, go to a dress rehearsal - you'll see about 5-7 extra sketches that way). Even sketches with lavish costumes and prosthetics and a fancy set have been known to be cut - the metric is funny, pure and simple. I think SNL nailed it over the course of the last 4 shows. Hope that is transparent enough for you!

Rachel, I adore you!
You nailed it with this for sure.
I loved the Tina Fey sketch and I the Tracy Morgan "endorsement" was hilarious as well.
I've been pleased about how terrific they have been so far this season. They are smartly representing several demographics in who they are playing to. As it was airing last night I was thinking about that and then they announced Christopher Walken as next weeks host. Walken is one of my all time favorites on SNL. This should be a doozy!

Do only "women of a certain age" say doozy? lol.

Anyway, I am a big fan of yours and am always glad to see you or read you.
Keep up the great work!

Psychologically speaking, there is ALWAYS bias, in everything we do!!! This goes for everyone, whether we admit it, or not!!!

I loved the comparison of Bill/Hillary to Tyson/Givens, and I HOPE it gets a lot of replays, the same way all of the networks, but particularly the ones that concern themselves with spreading NEWZ , constantly replayed the fear-mongering red phone commercial as a way of "informing the public" of what the commercial said--just in case we don't ALL live in Texas, they were (kindly) replaying it over and over and over again FOR FREE, .same as they did with the nefarious Swiftboat crapola..

I still think y Ms. Sklar is ignoring TIMING as a factor. It was one thing to show Hillary in a bad light in their Halloween sketch, (over 4 months ago) but the propriety of nailing Obama and favoring Clinton in the two weeks immediately before the important primaries (and then again a week later) ought to be considered in addition to the content of the sketches.

What I am perceiving is giant corporate pressures on the networks that are owned by the big multilateral corporations to try to tear down Obama and to favor Hillary. They just can't have a president who is elected from the bottom up, and they are going to use all of their ill-gained media presence to prevent it. GE is a HUGE profiteer from sales of war merchandise and they own NBC. Many of these same companies are contributing generously to the HC campaign, giving her more money than any other candidate, including Republicans. Are we supposed to be considering that kind of generosity a separate issue from giving her time? And are we supposed to believe that accepting all of their money isn't obligating HC to favor these companies (against competing interests, including those of the rest of us) if she does become president?

Viacom depends on government deregulations remaining in place, so why wouldn't they pressure Jon Stewart to put Hillary on his show the night before the election?

Tracy Morgan is a genius! Anyone who's watched "Brian Fellows" know why!

Tracy Morgan and Tina Fey are good friends and co-workers, and they're clearly having a lot of fun with this.

As to whether Tina and Tracy are still good friends, we'll see on the next season of 30 Rock and whether Tracy's character is still there.
