AP's Fournier Excoriates Obama For 'Arrogance'

In one of the most aggressive broadsides leveled against any of the presidential candidates since...well, since Keith Olbermann's "Special Comment" of last week, the AP's Ron Fournier, writing for his "On Deadline" column, fires a double-barreled shot squarely at Senator Barack Obama, labeling him "arrogant," "cocky," and "ooz[ing] a sense of entitlement."

...there's a line smart politicians don't cross -- somewhere between "I'm qualified to be president" and "I'm born to be president." Wherever it lies, Barack Obama better watch his step.

He's bordering on arrogance.

The grist for Fournier's mill seems to stem from an assortment of quotes the candidate has made on the stump: such as "Every place is Barack Obama country once Barack Obama's been there" and "It will light upon you...You will experience an epiphany. And you will say to yourself, I have to vote for Barack. I have to do it." And, indeed, it should be said, a line gets crossed once you refer to yourself in the third person. As a general rule, that's the province of Brazilian soccer players and Saturday Night Live impersonations of Bob Dole.

Fournier, being minimally charitable, notes that Obama's statements involve "a certain amount of tongue-in-cheekiness to such remarks -- almost as if Obama doesn't want to take his adoring crowds and political ascent too seriously." Some of the original reporting done on those quotes bear that out: Newsweek's Andrew Romano, for example, assessed Obama's "epiphany" remark at the time of its utterance as an attempt to "both [lampoon] and slyly [encourage] the perception." Similarly, one commenter on MSNBC's First Read offered:

Just to add context because you guys will not. This part in Fournier's article, a few months later, he said, "Every place is Barack Obama country once Barack Obama's been there." referred to a Nightline interview when he was joking with the reporter.

Still, Fournier out to lower a boom or two:

Privately, aides and associates of Obama tell stories about a boss who can be aloof and ungracious. He holds firmly to views and doesn't like to be challenged, traits that President Bush packaged and sold under the "resolute" brand in the 2004 election. For Bush, those qualities proved to be dangerous in a time of war and in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

If arrogance is a display of self-importance and superiority, Obama earns the pejorative every time he calls his pre-invasion opposition to the war in Iraq an act of courage.

Still, don't expect the Clinton camp to cite Fournier's analysis too widely, because he takes the time to brutalize Clinton, as well:

That may seem unfair to a candidate who's running against Clinton, the former first lady who is the model of overbearing pride. This is a woman, after all, who claims experience from her eight years as first lady but won't release her White House records; who trails Obama in delegates but deigned to suggest he'd be her running mate; and who has more baggage than Samsonite yet says Obama lacks "vetting."

"But voters expect arrogance from Clinton and her husband, Bill," Fournier says, "It's part of the package. It's a 90s-thing."

You've got to ask yourself, do you want a Preseident to Continually print money that raises ALL of our taxes and the cost of bare necessities.

Do you want a president who believes in spending 10 BILLION a month for the next 100 years. Is that ok?

Do you want the middle class to constantly bail out the country and pay ALL of its debt!

We WANT CHANGE for the WHITE AMERICA, BLACK AMERICA, LATINO AND ASIAN AMERICA!! We want a government that is for the PEOPLE!!

He was hardly "excoriating" poor sweet Obama. Really, these Obama fans get SO tiresome. Somebody shines the slightest bit of CONSTRUCTIVE criticism on Obama, and they're jumping up and down saying that Obomination is being "excoriated".

Personally, I could "excoriate" Obama a heck of a lot better than THAT! What with Jeremiah Wright, Rezko, Farrakhan and his wife's big mouth, not to mention his part in DISENFRANCHISING 26 million people in Florida and Michigan, "excoriating" Obama is getting easier every day.

Hmmmm, and what will be the scandal of the day today?

Right on!

With good reason has CHEATER Obama done everything in his power to DISENFRANCHISE Florida and Michigan. If there were free and fair elections in those states, Obama might well LOSE the nomination.

Tragically, the slimy little CHEAT may wind up STEALING the election. It won't do him much good though, since he is doomed to lose. Between Wright, Rezko, Farrakhan, and his wife's big mouth, the guy is doomed.

Even if McCain remains a gentleman, you can rest assured that those video clips of Rev. Wright, plus MANY new ones, will be saturating TV for the next 8 months, especially if he is nominated.

And who knows what video gems the Republicans will find when they comb the archives for prime Jeremiah Wright tirades. The only difference between Wright and Hitler is that Wright uses more body language.

Oh yeah, Hitler was OK because he loved dogs. I wonder if he showed any Stromtroopers the path to Jesus? Wouldn't want any of those poor Stormtroopers to be guilty by association. We all know that none of the Stormtroopers "really" believed all that Hitler stuff. It was just that Hitler was like, their uncle.

Oh yeah, I'm supposed to listen to Mr Slick ConArtiste brilliantly explain the concept of race. Excuse me while I barf.

Fournier's comments are so sad and petty....... He reminds me of someone from Clinton's campaign saying Obama's people sorta wink... all so petty... like old bitter women gossiping...

Looks like the Democrats are well on their way to destroying their chances once again.... if these comments are any indication.

So sad.

I believe Fournier misprinted the name in his column ... it should have been Hillary Clinton, not Barrack Obama. As the Clinton's think THEY ARE ENTITLED!

Who is Ron Fournier and why do we care what he said?

Have I really just commented on a blog within a blog that's reviewing another blog?!

It requires a certain level of arrogance for ANYONE to seek the Presidency of the United States.
The holder of that office is arguably the most powerful person on earth.
On the other end of the scale, it seems to me Ron Fournier has no shortage of arrogance in his own cupboard, either.
Whether Fortier's arrogance is deserved is questionable.

Far be it from an African American man in this country to have CONFIDENCE, it's so against the law. Maybe he should walk with his head down and not look you in the eye when he speaks to you? Why is it that anyone Black who is self-confident or self-assured it's automatically mislabeled as arrogance? Stop this foolishness and come into the 21st century.

The media's shameful exploitation of race can be summed up better in pictures than words. Feel free to use freely.

Fournier is a racist and doesn't know it.

Yeah, another "uppity Negro"...................

Bet he's "eloquent" too, eh?

And this is from something called a "journalist."

Just put the sheet on already and call it a day.

Yeah,

Anyone who criticizes Obama is, without a doubt, a racist.

Please stop with the "racist" crap. If you want to see racism at it's worst, check out the sermons of Obama's mentor Rev Wright.

I've termed his attitude and behaviors as arrogance, too. Upon reflection, I think it's the arrogance that arises from deep feelings of being a victim.

Reading the speech drew me to that fundamental quality and why I don't relate to him on a human level.

Painting him as nothing more than arrogant is, in fact, a bit too simplistic.
