Obama Responds

In one of the most aggressive broadsides leveled against any of the presidential candidates since...well, since Keith Olbermann's "Special Comment" of last week, the AP's Ron Fournier, writing for his "On Deadline" column, fires a double-barreled shot squarely at Senator Barack Obama, labeling him "arrogant," "cocky," and "ooz[ing] a sense of entitlement."

...there's a line smart politicians don't cross -- somewhere between "I'm qualified to be president" and "I'm born to be president." Wherever it lies, Barack Obama better watch his step.

He's bordering on arrogance.

The grist for Fournier's mill seems to stem from an assortment of quotes the candidate has made on the stump: such as "Every place is Barack Obama country once Barack Obama's been there" and "It will light upon you...You will experience an epiphany. And you will say to yourself, I have to vote for Barack. I have to do it." And, indeed, it should be said, a line gets crossed once you refer to yourself in the third person. As a general rule, that's the province of Brazilian soccer players and Saturday Night Live impersonations of Bob Dole.

Fournier, being minimally charitable, notes that Obama's statements involve "a certain amount of tongue-in-cheekiness to such remarks -- almost as if Obama doesn't want to take his adoring crowds and political ascent too seriously." Some of the original reporting done on those quotes bear that out: Newsweek's Andrew Romano, for example, assessed Obama's "epiphany" remark at the time of its utterance as an attempt to "both [lampoon] and slyly [encourage] the perception." Similarly, one commenter on MSNBC's First Read offered:

Just to add context because you guys will not. This part in Fournier's article, a few months later, he said, "Every place is Barack Obama country once Barack Obama's been there." referred to a Nightline interview when he was joking with the reporter.

Still, Fournier out to lower a boom or two:

Privately, aides and associates of Obama tell stories about a boss who can be aloof and ungracious. He holds firmly to views and doesn't like to be challenged, traits that President Bush packaged and sold under the "resolute" brand in the 2004 election. For Bush, those qualities proved to be dangerous in a time of war and in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

If arrogance is a display of self-importance and superiority, Obama earns the pejorative every time he calls his pre-invasion opposition to the war in Iraq an act of courage.

Still, don't expect the Clinton camp to cite Fournier's analysis too widely, because he takes the time to brutalize Clinton, as well:

That may seem unfair to a candidate who's running against Clinton, the former first lady who is the model of overbearing pride. This is a woman, after all, who claims experience from her eight years as first lady but won't release her White House records; who trails Obama in delegates but deigned to suggest he'd be her running mate; and who has more baggage than Samsonite yet says Obama lacks "vetting."

"But voters expect arrogance from Clinton and her husband, Bill," Fournier says, "It's part of the package. It's a 90s-thing."

Hate to reply to my own post, but I had to post this excerpt:

""Our goal with this project is to systematically build a sociological snapshot of the state of life -- and of political life -- in America during one of its most profound periods of change," said Managing Editor Kristin Gazlay.

I guess what they are talking about is the emerging American police state. Stand up and be proud, citizens. You certainly are not allowed to question the wisdom or magnificence of the state.

Obama 08.
In case no one has noticed, the country just died and we're obliged to read the rantings of old school racism.
I PRAY President Obama has a touch of vindictiveness...............some of our dems are traitorous throwbacks to an earlier, uglier America.

Kick Out The Jams and finish her!!

You can read all about the AP's plans to their "ambitious plans" to provide us with a "users guide" to understanding the social changes of 2008 here:

http://www.ap.org/pages/about/pressreleases/pr_012808a.html

Maybe they are the ones that need to understand that we did not believe their BS in 2007, and we will not likely believe it in 2008. Perhaps the corporate press and their corporate backers are the ones who are being arrogant.

The above poll contradicts with the Rasmussen Reports poll that is out today.

Fournier says Obama is arrogant. Well, we readers say Fournier is ignorant. And anything coming out of an ignorant is suspect and needs to be put aside. And if not put aside, then at least flung away with violence.

many have stated there has been not too much written on his mother........out of his 3 books, but according to Library of congress geneologist at. wargsdotcom under political figures

It is no mistake why Barack Obama is running for president...he is one of the inner circle pedigreed entitled bluebloods

Obama even admitted being cousins by heritage to Dick Cheney; what he didn't admit was his being related to FOUR PRESIDENTS .2 (are recent).......3 senators, 2 congressmen, 2 supreme court justices, and 2 governors...1 UK prime minister..........etc...etc...etc........he is also related to many others and has three people of nobility thrown in..

no wonder he doesn't speak of her....he is trying to play the humble poor kid with the African dad and who's paternal grandma lives in a hut. Sort of

hard to do when moms side is as incredibly a stairway to the presidency

The thing about arrogance is that a man who has every right to be arrogant never has a trace of it.

Wright may be Obama's coupe de grace. Wright has rallied the GOP conservative base in ways McCain could never have done. Obama can only hope his vetting largely ends with his speech tomorrow and weekend re-endorsement from the Chicago Trib after coming clean on Rizko.

But not so fast, HRC supporters. Fournier's charge that she "has more baggage than Samsonite" isn't news to the salvating right wing 527s. Unlike Obama, they won't be so easy on the Clinton's post-presidency years regarding their tax returns, her First Lady records, Clinton Foundation records, Bill's questionable business dealings, her pork barrel projects (the Hippie Musueum) and her thin claims of commander-in-chief and foreign policy experience.

Moreover, the 527s will gladly welcome a trip back across the Bridge to the 21st Century for a pitched battle over her version of the Wonder Years vs. their version of an era when "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar...but sometimes it's also a reminder."

You're forgetting that when the racial piece dies down, many of those conservatives will remember that they don't want anyone coming into their church telling their pastor what he can and can not say.

This is a hard line church/religion issue. Those evangelicals have hard line support for that and as a bonus, the muslim rumor is debunked.

Who the hell is this Fournier clown? And he's comparing Obama to Bush???

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:46 PM on 03/17/2008

He's obviously a racist, no doubt about it, otherwise, he wouldn't be criticizing the "Anointed One." Now, lets get busy and keep trashing Hillary and Bill....after all, we're the tolerant Obamaites: Hope and Change!! Hope and Change!! Hillary's a monster!! Hillary's a monster!!

Excellent. Right on the money. The thread about Powers being on Colbert is filled with Obamians making nasty statements about Hillary. They say they too think Hillary is a monster. I politely told them that what they were saying was antithetical to Obama's message. I don't think it sank in though. Obamians are acting like the fundies.

Ron Fournier is just absurd. If a candidate doesn't prostrate him/herself to journalists then they think they are arrogant. I've got news for media - we are as sick of media-as-usual as we are of politics-as-usual.

'AP' now stands for 'All Partisan'. Did a GOP bigwig buy AP by any chance? It sure looks like it.

The Associated Press is a conglomerate owned by the 1400 news outlets that support it.

Here is their board of directors. You can see that it is run by the same folks who tell us what to think via the mainstream media. Of course their bias is reflected in the AP.

I have sensed an arrogance about Obama too.

It first came to my attention in the last debate with Clinton, or next to the last, when he
would not look directly at the moderator or the audience but kept his eyes diverted to his scribbling.

This was rude. This was arrogant. This said, I'm too (self) involved to be involved with you.

So what a journalist felt he was arrogant. Others might say he was being positive and enthusiastic. Nothing here to dampen my spirits. I support Senator Obama 100%. And I prefer some arrogance to the baggage the Clintons are towing....
