I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Obama Responds

In one of the most aggressive broadsides leveled against any of the presidential candidates since...well, since Keith Olbermann's "Special Comment" of last week, the AP's Ron Fournier, writing for his "On Deadline" column, fires a double-barreled shot squarely at Senator Barack Obama, labeling him "arrogant," "cocky," and "ooz[ing] a sense of entitlement."

...there's a line smart politicians don't cross -- somewhere between "I'm qualified to be president" and "I'm born to be president." Wherever it lies, Barack Obama better watch his step.

He's bordering on arrogance.

The grist for Fournier's mill seems to stem from an assortment of quotes the candidate has made on the stump: such as "Every place is Barack Obama country once Barack Obama's been there" and "It will light upon you...You will experience an epiphany. And you will say to yourself, I have to vote for Barack. I have to do it." And, indeed, it should be said, a line gets crossed once you refer to yourself in the third person. As a general rule, that's the province of Brazilian soccer players and Saturday Night Live impersonations of Bob Dole.

Fournier, being minimally charitable, notes that Obama's statements involve "a certain amount of tongue-in-cheekiness to such remarks -- almost as if Obama doesn't want to take his adoring crowds and political ascent too seriously." Some of the original reporting done on those quotes bear that out: Newsweek's Andrew Romano, for example, assessed Obama's "epiphany" remark at the time of its utterance as an attempt to "both [lampoon] and slyly [encourage] the perception." Similarly, one commenter on MSNBC's First Read offered:

Just to add context because you guys will not. This part in Fournier's article, a few months later, he said, "Every place is Barack Obama country once Barack Obama's been there." referred to a Nightline interview when he was joking with the reporter.

Still, Fournier out to lower a boom or two:

Privately, aides and associates of Obama tell stories about a boss who can be aloof and ungracious. He holds firmly to views and doesn't like to be challenged, traits that President Bush packaged and sold under the "resolute" brand in the 2004 election. For Bush, those qualities proved to be dangerous in a time of war and in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

If arrogance is a display of self-importance and superiority, Obama earns the pejorative every time he calls his pre-invasion opposition to the war in Iraq an act of courage.

Still, don't expect the Clinton camp to cite Fournier's analysis too widely, because he takes the time to brutalize Clinton, as well:

That may seem unfair to a candidate who's running against Clinton, the former first lady who is the model of overbearing pride. This is a woman, after all, who claims experience from her eight years as first lady but won't release her White House records; who trails Obama in delegates but deigned to suggest he'd be her running mate; and who has more baggage than Samsonite yet says Obama lacks "vetting."

"But voters expect arrogance from Clinton and her husband, Bill," Fournier says, "It's part of the package. It's a 90s-thing."

"But voters expect arrogance from Clinton and her husband, Bill," Fournier says, "It's part of the package. It's a 90s-thing."

Is it still the 90's?

I see a man who is comfortable with himself.

i see a man who knows who he is and likes who he is.

Obama isn't perfect, nor is he evil. He is a man and I believe will be a great president.

I agree 100% with cool republica I think both Obama and his wife are one in the same arrogant and over bering. To say that this is the first time she is proud of her country says it all I know that sometimes we all get frustrated with the government but we are still proud to be an American. I think that Obama has played the race card more than anyone in this race. His wife says if you don't vote for him this will be your only chance because he will not run again. So we are told to vote for someone we know nothing about and now that we have heard from his reverand and so called spiritual adviser I know why he plays that race card all the time. My mother always said people will judge you my the company you keep and I have always believed that. So now I know all I need to know about Obama.

When does Barack play that race card "all the time"? Did he make Bill, Ferraro, Rangel, Johnson or Cuamo speak foolishly?

You also seem to miss the fact that the journalist blasted your girl quite harshly. He said Barack needed to "Watch his step" meaning he hasn't crossed the line yet. He was quite direct on his blast of the Clintons.

No, he does not make them say what they say. But he does twist what they say and then throw that raw meat out here where everyone can snarl and rip it to pieces. It's predictable and not very honorable.

His Hillary remarks were on target too. It is possible to see both sides of an issue.

One man's arrogance is another man's confidence.

All things being equal, the american voter rewards confidence more than they punish arrogance. In any election, 'cocky' is the smarter play.

Not when your message is "humility." OK, "implied message." Obama is anything but humble. He seems to me to be someone who has always gotten things his way. He doesn't play nice when really challenged.
Plus, he wants to start at the top, without paying his dues. I call that a character flaw.

The more exposure people are getting him the "shine is dimming". Not so new anymore.
Same "ole politics", only this this time, for those of us who suffered thru 9/11, "up close
and personal", those remarks cut deep. In the, out the pew, it doesn't matter. It is not
credible that he did not hear about controversial statementsonce made. He was aware.
It is his tactical approach,to deflect problems by by calling attention to other's campaign
challenges by pressing issues i.e. Clinton taxes. She's all ready given a date for their
release. That won't cause voter the negative reaction to stop to Sen. Obama's pastor, Rezko
associates, stealth "reverse racism" in his surrogate's campaign, Such as the memo,
circulated by the Obama campaign, before SC primary, and Jesse Jackson Jr.'s
comments on MSNBC, she didn't cry for Katrina.. People have been attributing negative
campaigning all to one side. That photo of Sen. Obama was available online for months prior
to Drudge suggesting that it could have been released by someone in the Clinton campaign.
But, everyone jumped on it, ready to condemn and Obama allowed it. So now, I hear, on MSNBC,
Obama, probably was in the pews, a few time, has been opportunistic and filled with ambition.
What a surprise! Heard some of those adjective before but, they were NOT said in an admiring
way, if a little sarcastic. Mr. "Hope" may not be all about hope after all....oh. How do you feel now?
Can he still be the vehicle to heal the "broken souls"? Are we not seeking the Best person to be
POTUS? We need to com together around the issues. Look beyond the words!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:51 PM on 03/17/2008

Look beyond the words and you will actually see the work Obama has done and wants to do if elected POTUS. He's fighting a two-front war against Hillary's lies and McBush's crap and beating them both. RE Clinton's taxes...the years 2000 through 2006 are readily available. I'm sure they're in a folder some place in that mansion that Terry McAuliffe bought them in upstate New York. The bigger questions is why on or about April 15? We all know that's the deadline for her 2007 tax records - just like the rest of us. How many people want to bet we don't see those tax records from 2000-2006 until around 11:30 p.m. on April 21? It's all about transparency. Obama has passed laws as a U.S. senator that open things up in Washington for us all to see, while Clinton tries to shut down any investigation. What is she hiding?

If Ron Fournier falls over in the woods, does anyone know? Who is Fournier for his opinion to merit special attention? It certainly makes it clear that contrary to the way they'd like to portray themselve, the AP is NOT a 'just the facts, m'am' objective news group.

Hallelujah!!!

FINALLY, the mainstream media is seeing the Obama that we traditional Democrats have seen all year.

He is an arrogant dilettante who seems to think that being "above the fray" means the fray does not still exist. Working people (traditional Democrats) want a President will get into that fray and fight for them, not someone who intellectualizes issues and then walks away.

Obama is finally being exposed for the phony that he is.

it's about time!!!

I don't think Sharpton or Jackson are fringe reverends. Wright is a little over the top but not a horrible human being. The only problem I see is that Obama may have lied when he said he never heard any of those words from Wright. If so, that is a problem.

walks away? How many picket lines has Hillary walked? How many years did she sit on the Wal-Mart board while they contracted with even more sweat shops and made plans to fire any employee trying to unionize? That's not only walking away, that's playing deaf and dumb. The fact that any union (AFSCME anyone?) would endorse Hillary is a joke and political glad-handing at it's best. I'm glad the Oregon wing of AFSCME got wise and endorsed Obama. Above the fray? Do you not realize that it's that partisan bickering that has led to a recession and worse? Why not try to work together for the common good instead of brawling all the time? Phony? You want phony? How about Clinton taking $300,000 in donations from a company that is leading the way in facilitating the outsourcing craze and then saying she's for the working man? You remember that (D-Punjab) dustup early on in the campaign? That was in response to Hillary taking that check and getting onstage in front of a huge audience cheering for her because they knew they're jobs outsourcing American jobs were safe and remarking about the cheers, "I am delighted to be the Senator from Punjab as well as from New York."

I've never heard of Fournier before today but his taking exception to Obama saying that his opposition to the war took courage completely destroys Fourier's credibility. This criticism displays a woeful lack of understanding of the political pressure that politicians were feeling at the time to support the war, especially ones with national aspirations. Bush propaganda successfully spread fear that was both wide and deep in America. And even the politicians that knew better than to trust the administration had to consider the likelihood that some bio or chemical agents would be found somewhere in Iraq and the nearly impossible to defend political attacks from Rove that would come from that. If not for fear for their political careers, Democrats would have nearly unanimously voted against the IWR. Privately, away from the cameras and microphones, very few of these congressmen and senators truly believed that Iraq was linked to 9/11 and was an imminent threat to America. Of course courage was absolutely essential in opposing the Iraq war. To argue otherwise is to be stupid or dishonest.

They tried to tear this man down by:

Saying he was muslim, then the anti-Christ.

Claiming he was an empty suit... then he was a dirty politcal hack.

Going after his wife... then going after his pastor.

Saying he is only about speeches... before criticizing his policies.

Oh, and that doesn't include the too black before he was not black enough, too liberal before he was moderate manchruian candidate, didn't say the pledge or did not know the words to God bless AMerica.

WTF is wrong with some people? The power structure feels threatened by him? Is it reacial? FOr some I'm sure. But my best guess is he is new generation that will do what's best for the people, not the entitled pobbyists or journalists. God forbid someone have a bit of style and independence.

One man's arrogance is another man's confidence. You can be sure that those aren't his views by picking up either of his books, reading his history, looking at his track record, paying attention to his speeches, or even reading his blog post here at HuffPo from last week.

Or you can take the guilt by associate route, as I'm sure every person you've ever associated yourself with has been an image of perfection.
