David Vitter: "Enormous Difference" Between My Case And Spitzer's

Sen. David Vitter, R-La., has been mostly mum on the prostitution scandal that forced Democratic New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer to announce his resignation last week. But Vitter let down his guard a bit in a conference call with constituents. Scott Jordan, editor of the Independent Weekly of Lafayette, said he was able to ask Vitter whether he would resign after his phone number was connected last year to a Washington, D.C., escort service that federal investigators say was a call-girl operation. "I have made a very serious mistake a long time ago and I have to live with that every day," Vitter said, according to Jordan's account. "That's not a flippant statement. I need to spend my whole life making up for that." According to Jordan, Vitter turned "a bit defiant" and added: "Anybody who looks at the two cases will see there is an enormous difference between the two of them. The people that are trying to draw comparisons to the two cases are people who've never agreed with me on important issues like immigration and other things."

This is from over a year ago and it shows how much the Republicans hated Spitzer and wanted him out of power forever:

The "phony loans" referenced relate to a small scandal about loans the developer made to his son for the 1994 Attorney General campaign. You can hear the message here, via the NY Times. A lawyer for Bernard Spitzer said that call was traced to the 40 Central Park South apartment of Roger Stone, who is currently paid $20,000 a month as a GOP consultant.


Bernard Spitzer's lawyer says they compared the voice mail message with a broadcast interview of Stone. The Times says it received the voicemail and the broadcast interview and was "unable to draw any conclusions about whether Mr. Stone’s voice was on Mr. Spitzer’s phone message."

Stone, who has worked for Nixon, Reagan, and the two Bushes, denies that he made a call, saying that someone must have broken into his home and doctored a message. Stone's theory, via the Daily News: "His building is owned by Democratic fund-raiser Dale Hemmerdinger, whom Spitzer has nominated to be the next MTA chairman, and Hemmerdinger's management company, ATCO, has pass keys that could have let in an intruder."

Stone told the Sun he was at the play Frost/Nixon when the call was allegedly made and said, "I have been accused of a lot of things but being dumb is not one of them." And he told the Post, "I don't deny that the phone number is mine but fabricating my voice would be exceedingly easy. Give me a f- - -ing break. This is the ultimate dirty trick and the kind of terror tactic Spitzer used in the Attorney General's Office."

The message became public after the senior Spitzer's lawyer sent a letter to the Senate Committee of Investigations and the State Ethics Commission. The Investigations committee head, George Winner, a Republican, suggested it's easy for caller ID to be changed and a Democratic committee member suggested that Bruno fire Stone. "

Here's another difference: Eliot Spitzer, despite personal flaws, actually had accomplishments.
As Atty General for NY he prosecuted white-collar crime, internet fraud, financial fraud, he championed environmental protection. As governor he attempted to reform the way appointments are handed out, and the budgetary process.
Now, David Vitter, he's taken stands against things like expending children's health care for families above the Medicaid line but too poor to afford insurance. Against any sex education in schools other than abstinence, against same-sex unions. Against funding for any health procedures done by Planned Parenthood, even PAP tests and breast cancer screenings. Against a woman's right to choose. But heck, he's for swell things like gun ownership and Rudy Giuliani for president.

The difference is when a Democrat fools with a hooker, he resigns and when a Republican dose it he apologizes, works in asking the Lord for forgiveness line and it’s becomes ancient history. If he was my Senator what would burn me is when asked after Katrina what was his most important issue and his response was a working for a gay marriage amendment.
