Florida Revote

The Florida Democrats have reached their decision. They will not be holding a revote for their primary, banking instead on the decision of the Rules & Bylaws Committee:

Last week, the Florida Democratic Party laid out the only existing way that we can comply with DNC Rules - a statewide revote run by the Party - and asked for input. Thousands of people responded. We spent the weekend reviewing your messages, and while your reasons vary widely, the consensus is clear: Florida doesn't want to vote again. So we won't. A party-run primary or caucus has been ruled out, and it's simply not possible for the state to hold another election, even if the Party were to pay for it. Republican Speaker of the Florida House Marco Rubio refuses to even consider that option. Florida is finally moving to paper ballots, which is a good thing, but it means that at least 15 counties do not have the capacity to handle a major election before the June 10th DNC primary deadline. This doesn't mean that Democrats are giving up on Florida voters. It means that a solution will have to come from the DNC Rules & Bylaws Committee, which is scheduled to meet again in April.

Read the full memo:

Dear XXX,

For a year now, the Florida Democratic Party has tried to comply with the Delegate Selection Rules of the Democratic National Committee.

We researched every potential alternative process - from caucuses to county conventions to mail-in elections - but no plan could come anywhere close to being viable in Florida.

We made a detailed case to the DNC Rules & Bylaws Committee, but we were denied.

Our Democratic legislators in Tallahassee tried to set the Florida primary on Feb. 5, instead of Jan. 29, but of course, their proposed amendment to House Bill 537 was greeted with laughter and derision from the Republicans who control the state government <>.

Does '537' ring a bell? It should. It's the number of votes that separated Texas Gov. George W. Bush and Vice President Al Gore in Florida in 2000.

It's the number that sent this country and this world in a terrible direction.

We can't let 537 - or the Republicans - determine our future again.

President Bush plans to stop in Florida tomorrow to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Republican National Committee's efforts to elect his successor in November.

The last thing America needs is a third Bush term. Despite the widespread anxiety that working families feel, not to mention the broad agreement among economists that we are in a recession, President Bush and John McCain blindly believe that the economy is strong.

And let me remind you that John McCain endorsed President Bush's decision to deny health care to thousands of Florida children by vetoing an expansion of the successful SCHIP program. McCain also promises to jeopardize the financial security of Florida seniors by privatizing Social Security. He continually threatens to push Florida's military families to the brink by keeping American troops in Iraq for "100 years" or more.

This is why we are Democrats, and this is why we must stick together, no matter where this ongoing delegate debate takes us.

When this committee stripped us of 100% of our delegates last year, some members summed up their reasoning by saying, "The rules are the rules." Unfortunately, the rules did not apply to Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina when they, too, violated the DNC calendar by moving from their assigned dates.

As the late great Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, "We must adjust our ideas to the facts of today... Rules are not necessarily sacred, principles are."

The Florida Democratic Party has stuck to its principles throughout this debate. We've remained open-minded while never wavering from our commitment to an open and fair election that would allow all Florida Democrats to participate, whether serving in Iraq, retiring in Boca, studying abroad or entertaining at a theme park.

Another late great President -Abraham Lincoln, a Republican - said, "A house divided against itself cannot stand."

If Democrats heed this wisdom, we will win in November.

America needs a great president again, but a President McCain will settle for the status quo and carry on the disastrous Bush tradition.

President Clinton or President Obama will make history and lead this nation in a new direction.

Let's remember this as the delegate debate continues. We must stick together as Democrats. The stakes are too high and the opportunities too great.

I will keep you posted on any major developments. Thank you for your concern and your commitment.

Sincerely,

Congresswoman Karen L. Thurman
Chair, Florida Democratic Party

I’m going to attempt to lay out the argument for Howard Dean.

There is a lull in the campaign of about 6 weeks, the candidates are laying around attacking each other.

John McCain is traveling the world looking presidential and acting like a statesman.

Nancy Pelosi says that the Superdelegates should not be overturning the pledged delegates.

For the most part the superdelegates agree.

Barack Obama is ahead by an insurmountable amount and Hillary has no chance of catching up to him.

Everyone including Hillary Clinton’s camp agree that come convention, Obama will be way ahead in pledged delegates.

Since everyone agree that Obama will not be overtaken, why sit around waiting for the inevitable to happen. If a superdelegate has not seen enough and cannot make a decision by now, they don’t need to be superdelegates.

Solution

Howard Dean should call a Superdelegate convention now and have the delegates choose up sides now.

At the end of this special convention we will have a nominee.
Get off your duff and get on the ball Howard Dean, this is one of many scenarios that the Democratic party should be exploring now.

I don't care if Miss Nancy thinks the supers shouldn't overturn the pledged delegates. Too bad. Those are the rules. The rules are that the supers are independent and can do whatever they want. They might want to take into account that Hillary did receive more votes in Florida even if the delegates aren't seated. They might want to wait and see how the Rezko trial goes and how much the Wright issue has affected Obama's chances of winning in November. But, you want to hurry it up and I don't.

I Think NOT!
The Man Is An EFFING LOON , He Couldn't Look Or Act Presidential if His Life Depended On It. And a Statesman He Certainly IS NOT!
Dangerously Unstable is the ONLY way To Describe that Parasite!!!!!

Yes, how nice for Obama..like always. He is sliding in the polls. And of course, Pennsylvania and many other states are yet to vote, as well as Puerto Rico. Let their voices be heard! you have already not let Florida and Michigan be heard! How disenfranchising do you want this to be? And we will not even get into many bloggers that want their votes back that have already voted for Obama. And caucuses that disenfranchise many voters who are ederly, working, or single parents that cannot make a caucus and those voters that just don't like confrontation! This race is not just about Obama! It is about the best candidate to actually WIN in November. Clinton is leading in that poll! Look at the new USA Today poll, and the rest. Only CNN managed to show Obama ahead. Why? The Obama network.

No re-vote in Florida, parties will end up splitting the delegates in order to seat Florida.

Hillary you have no chance of overtaking the pledged delegates.

Nancy Pelosi says that the superdelegates should not overturn the pledged delegates.

The pledged delegates agree in the majority.

Game, Set, Match.

Give it up Hillary it's over.

The fact is that the nation is barely even aware that there is currently a primary contest running on the Democratic side, and I dare say that not 20% of Americans could correctly say who the Rethug nominee is going to be.

Which is amusing as you look at all the newbie Clintocrats blathering on about how Obama is doomed and he is going to doom the party and that McBomb is going to grind him like a fine powder.

There is no valid way for Clinton to take the nomination, but she is perfectly willing to slime Obama as he shoots past her.

If the doom and gloom Clintocrats are right, then why has Clinton been loosing SDs the last month while Obama has gained a quarter of his in the same time?

Those SDs are said to be looking to the fall and judging who is most electable. Why, if Clinton is so damned electable, has she not had a stampede of SDs to her side?

I'll tell you why. The SDs are terrified of another Clinton candidacy and another Clinton term.

Dear Florida Dems,

Nice going. Maybe your next primary should be in Febrary '09. Then, you'll be REAL important and beat EVERYBODY!!!!

(If this election year situation doesn't SCREAM for a one day national primary and the elimination of super delegates, I don't know what does.)

Because it is cheaper than re-voting , it does not upset the estabished DNC rules, and Florida is forced to accept this and is allowed to seat their delegates at the convention while taking responsibility for their own decision to violate the established primary scheduling rules.

No one benefits from a primary that all concerned agreed before hand, would benefit no one by way of any delegates awarded. Florida is back on the map and the DNC rules remain uncomprimised.

The popular vote means way less also. Kind of totaly irrelevant infact.
If the popular vote was ever going to be a serious argument for the nomination, the votes from MI and FL would have to be excluded from the final numbers.
With respect to determining the Dem nomination these two primaries were essentially meaningless. Meaningless as they always have been.

FL got into this mess in the first place because FL state senator Jeremy Ring of Broward county added the amendment to move up the primary date to 1/29. Ring campaigned in 2006 on the early primary issue, stating FL deserved to have more influence in the primaries than Iowa and New Hampshire. The Republicans were happy to oblige Ring. As much as Karen Thurman and the other FL state Dem leaders want to blame the Republicans in FL, this mess all started with a defiant Democrat.

As a Democrat residing in FL, I am getting very, very tired of the Democratic party's suicide wish, both on a state and national level.

If they seat Florida or Michigan all the rules go out the door. You do not change rules in the middle of a contest.

The next election will be chaos.

California and New York can schedule a winner take all primary first and all but determine the Nominee.
Who will stop them?

States will schedule earlier and earlier in an attempt to have more influence and we will be running campaigns and voting 2 years before the general election.

Only rich corporate bought and paid for candidates would even have a chance, throw grass roots out the window.

I guess this sounds pretty good for Clinton supporters who want to win at any cost, damn the consequences and to hell with the rules they agreed to.

And do not repeat the dumb ass talking point about Obama wanting to "change the rules " about super delegates.
All he did was suggest that they should vote like their districts

HE NEVER SAID THEY SHOULD BE FORCED TO!!!
Thats an opinion , NOT A RULE CHANGE.

Then why have superdelegates? The whole intent is to give party elders the chance to do what is good for the party whether or not it was what the popular vote said. The line of thinking you espouse would certainly be "changing the rules." Funny, when it comes to a discussion of Michigan and Florida, Obama supporters keep telling me about how important it is to stick to the rules.

I voted in 2000 for Gore, and they stole the election from me.

2004, Blackwell and his ilk stole Ohio from us.

Now, after voting in the Florida Primary again, I'm going to be disenfranchised again.

I'm over it. I'm staying home in November. It really doesn't matter.

3 strikes and the Democratic party is out in my book.

I'm going INDEPENDENT.

History will write the Obama campaign as classic. It's a miracle someone like Obama would even want to be president. You can't help but smile. The cynics are smiling! Even some of the republicans are smiling. While HRC insists that she can punch back, the majority of Americans don't want to fight anymore, they want to smile. Wrong era Hillary!

The only question is how ugly and desperate can Hillary make this while the press hovers like vultures.
