Florida Dems: We Will Not Revote

Florida Dems: We Will Not Revote

Huffington Post   |   March 17, 2008 05:47 PM

The Florida Democrats have reached their decision. They will not be holding a revote for their primary, banking instead on the decision of the Rules & Bylaws Committee:

Last week, the Florida Democratic Party laid out the only existing way that we can comply with DNC Rules - a statewide revote run by the Party - and asked for input. Thousands of people responded. We spent the weekend reviewing your messages, and while your reasons vary widely, the consensus is clear: Florida doesn't want to vote again. So we won't. A party-run primary or caucus has been ruled out, and it's simply not possible for the state to hold another election, even if the Party were to pay for it. Republican Speaker of the Florida House Marco Rubio refuses to even consider that option. Florida is finally moving to paper ballots, which is a good thing, but it means that at least 15 counties do not have the capacity to handle a major election before the June 10th DNC primary deadline. This doesn't mean that Democrats are giving up on Florida voters. It means that a solution will have to come from the DNC Rules & Bylaws Committee, which is scheduled to meet again in April.

Read the full memo:

Dear XXX,

For a year now, the Florida Democratic Party has tried to comply with the Delegate Selection Rules of the Democratic National Committee.

We researched every potential alternative process - from caucuses to county conventions to mail-in elections - but no plan could come anywhere close to being viable in Florida.

We made a detailed case to the DNC Rules & Bylaws Committee, but we were denied.

Our Democratic legislators in Tallahassee tried to set the Florida primary on Feb. 5, instead of Jan. 29, but of course, their proposed amendment to House Bill 537 was greeted with laughter and derision from the Republicans who control the state government <>.

Does '537' ring a bell? It should. It's the number of votes that separated Texas Gov. George W. Bush and Vice President Al Gore in Florida in 2000.

It's the number that sent this country and this world in a terrible direction.

We can't let 537 - or the Republicans - determine our future again.

President Bush plans to stop in Florida tomorrow to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Republican National Committee's efforts to elect his successor in November.

The last thing America needs is a third Bush term. Despite the widespread anxiety that working families feel, not to mention the broad agreement among economists that we are in a recession, President Bush and John McCain blindly believe that the economy is strong.

And let me remind you that John McCain endorsed President Bush's decision to deny health care to thousands of Florida children by vetoing an expansion of the successful SCHIP program. McCain also promises to jeopardize the financial security of Florida seniors by privatizing Social Security. He continually threatens to push Florida's military families to the brink by keeping American troops in Iraq for "100 years" or more.

This is why we are Democrats, and this is why we must stick together, no matter where this ongoing delegate debate takes us.

When this committee stripped us of 100% of our delegates last year, some members summed up their reasoning by saying, "The rules are the rules." Unfortunately, the rules did not apply to Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina when they, too, violated the DNC calendar by moving from their assigned dates.

As the late great Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, "We must adjust our ideas to the facts of today... Rules are not necessarily sacred, principles are."

The Florida Democratic Party has stuck to its principles throughout this debate. We've remained open-minded while never wavering from our commitment to an open and fair election that would allow all Florida Democrats to participate, whether serving in Iraq, retiring in Boca, studying abroad or entertaining at a theme park.

Another late great President -Abraham Lincoln, a Republican - said, "A house divided against itself cannot stand."

If Democrats heed this wisdom, we will win in November.

America needs a great president again, but a President McCain will settle for the status quo and carry on the disastrous Bush tradition.

President Clinton or President Obama will make history and lead this nation in a new direction.

Let's remember this as the delegate debate continues. We must stick together as Democrats. The stakes are too high and the opportunities too great.

I will keep you posted on any major developments. Thank you for your concern and your commitment.

Sincerely,

Congresswoman Karen L. Thurman
Chair, Florida Democratic Party

For months now all the news organizations have done everything in their power to slime Hillary well giving Obama a free ride. Even Fox news didn"t report any negatives on Obama, this is really usual for Fox. As soon as Obama passed Hillary in delegates and could not be caught, Fox news started reporting negatively on Obama. The media on both sides of the aisles has played a huge roll in defusing the momentum of both democratic candidates, their attacks on Hillary early, helped to make her unlikable and now they have effectively neutralized Obama by dividing us on race. Looks like Rove outsmarted the far left media again, while effectively using the far right media, remember Rove works for Fox news.

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS WRONG WITH PUNDITS WHO WON'T DO ANY RESEARCH?

They keep talking about the 20years Obama has been in the Church. Is it not clear to any thinking person that the pastor said most of the controversial stuff after Obama started running for President and was not a regular attendee if at all as he campaigned all over America.

The only speech he might have caught wind of is the 9-11 talk that Pastor Wright believes that 9-11 happened because of US actions overseas. Even Ron Paul had that view so what is so unique about his view?

How about the the GOD D*** America Church talk? He said GOD D**** America IF America won't stop treating some of it's citizens like SECOND CLASS. I am not saying he should not have said it differently but he was not preaching hate at all. He actually said that JESUS thought him not to HATE after the Hillary speak but nobody plays that.

Don't shoot yourself in the foot, and throw your votes to republicans. If the votes are never counted its because of the republicans they ran the state elections, they moved the primary"s voting date up, knowing that it was against the rules. It was also against the republicans party"s rules, yet all of the republican nominees campaigned there, almost, as if, they knewwwww hmmmmm.

No kidding. and how come the media hardly mentions that the Republicans deliberately created this mess? And I still don't get why Howard Dean... and Madame - hypocrite friend Brazile... don't just do the only logical thing and honor Florida's vote. It was an even playing field... where Obama even ran ads... so the vote obviously has to stand.. It's not rocket science. And redo Michigan.. end of problem. I do think fraud charges should be given to the Republican Governor and legislature - for deliberately organizing the removal of Democrat Floridians right to have their votes counted in this primary! That also isn't rocket science.

We need actual leaders to step forward. The people we have established as leaders are afraid to take a stand on anything. We are a nation of people afraid to step forward and lead. Howard Dean has no business being in a position which requires leadership. He showed that when he ruined his chance to be president. For once the Democrats that voted made a wise decision by pushing him our of the race.
Mr Dean should step forward and delegate the convention delegates to the split of the nations vot in the primary elections of the states. He is the supposed leader of the Democratic party. Lead Damnit!
Remember, follow the leader will get all of America, more rule by declaration not by democracy, as we have had for 7 years. Do not play follow the leader for more Bush misadventure through McBush.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:00 AM on 03/18/2008

Thanks Howard Dean! If they are not counted, you can be assured this state goes red in the General Election. With the history of Florida, why did you ever make this type of hard-nosed decision? Count the votes and seat the delegates! We want to WIN the General Election. And all Dems have had enough of Iowa first! We need Primaries in large states first, as they have diverse populations. Florida and Michigan were correct.

Additionally, the latest USA today poll has Clinton beating Obama in the Democrat race, and most important Clinton beating McCain in the General Election 51% to 46%. That is a large margin. Much larger than Obama! So it is time to quit this nonsense and get a Democrat in office.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:27 AM on 03/18/2008

Why will lack of a Democratic primary mean Florida will remain a Red state? My argument about counting Florida is it was the Republican legislature that made the decision on the State's Primary Election. Once again, it's the Republicans that corrupt, interfere and tamper with voting. The Democrats are casualties of the nefarious Republican Governor and Legislature. Also, did the USA poll factor in Nader? According to the latest Zogby numbers, neither Clinton nor Obama beat McCain in a general election. Nader siphons off anywhere between 5 and 15% of the vote. I can assure you, as things are now, Florida will be delivered to the Republican candidate by the same methods it was in 2000 and 2004. Nothing has changed. Florida and it 27 Electoral votes will go the John McCain and there is little that can and will be done about it. Additionally, I predict the same will be the case in Ohio especially if Obama is the nominee. Unfortunately, as some have already pointed out, the Rev. White fiasco will eventually scuttle the Obama campaign, just as Willy Horton did in Dukakis. It's nasty and mean, but the end result will be the same. McCain will be the next President and we'll have at least 4 more years of corruption and insanity.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:00 AM on 03/18/2008

"Why will lack of a Democratic primary mean Florida will remain a Red state?"

It's idiotic to assume otherwise. Gore lost Florida by less than 1/3 of one percent of teh thevoters who turned out for teh FL primary. It only takes 1/3 of 1 percent to stay home in November and the state is red. Comnsidering Obama is teh least popular candidate there and it looks to teh people of FL they are being screwed over for his benefit, why wouldn't they stay home? Especially as FL has a massive amount of moderates and Obama Zealots have forced Obama into the Loony left corner, making McCain their next choice.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:18 AM on 03/18/2008

Everyone was on the Florida ballot. No one campaigned. People voted. It was fair. Count their votes.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:50 AM on 03/18/2008

Not everyone voted, why is it only one of a couple that had LESS votes than Republicans?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:11 AM on 03/18/2008

Because FL is a pretty much 50/50 state unlike others?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:18 AM on 03/18/2008

I"m going to attempt to lay out the argument for Howard Dean.

There is a lull in the campaign of about 6 weeks, the candidates are laying around attacking each other.

John McCain is traveling the world looking presidential and acting like a statesman.

Nancy Pelosi says that the Superdelegates should not be overturning the pledged delegates.

For the most part the superdelegates agree.

Barack Obama is ahead by an insurmountable amount and Hillary has no chance of catching up to him.

Everyone including Hillary Clinton"s camp agree that come convention, Obama will be way ahead in pledged delegates.

Since everyone agree that Obama will not be overtaken, why sit around waiting for the inevitable to happen. If a superdelegate has not seen enough and cannot make a decision by now, they don"t need to be superdelegates.

Solution

Howard Dean should call a Superdelegate convention now and have the delegates choose up sides now.

At the end of this special convention we will have a nominee.
Get off your duff and get on the ball Howard Dean, this is one of many scenarios that the Democratic party should be exploring now.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:01 AM on 03/18/2008

You missed teh most important factor: Obama has only taken the lead based on caucuses in states that don't matter in November and has yet to win a single important state outside of Illinois.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:19 AM on 03/18/2008

As a Democrat, I am really concerned with what is going on with our Party. It seems as if Adam bit the apple and the sin of confusion dropped on the Democratic Party from Hell. There is something wrong!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:01 AM on 03/18/2008

As a Florida voter I knew that at the time my vote wasn't going to count. But I voted anyway really believing in my heart that the democratic party would get together and figure out how to seat the delegates. Shame on me! Florida will go to the republicans in the general election for this very reason. I will never give a penny to the DNC ever again (or least until Dean steps down). What a mess!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:38 AM on 03/18/2008

Maybe instead of punishing the DNC you should punish the leaders in your state who knowingly voted 115-1 to move the primary up even though they had been told that there would be a penalty. Why no frustration at that. Your votes will be counted but there will also be a penalty I wrote to the DNC asking that the Superdelegates not be sat as a punishment to FL's leadership for trying to break the rules. There must be a punishment to these people who were so up on their high horse to make their primaries matter more.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:14 AM on 03/18/2008

emoi99:

Both Howard Dean and the Governor of Florida and his minions... should be impeached (can you impeach a governor??) and removed from office immediately! This was nothing other than DELIBERATE FRAUD.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:25 PM on 03/18/2008

Exactly!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:42 AM on 03/18/2008

And teh punishment is that Obama gets to be famous and make massive amounts of money while we get stuck with President McCain, because Florida goes red.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:27 PM on 03/18/2008

Sadly this issue appears far from over. I just watch Governor Ed Rendell, a Clinton surrogate, push that the votes must count. The Clinton campaign is going to push hard for these delegates and votes. Here will be what is pushed.

They will argue that Florida attempted to hold a re-vote. They will argue that the Florida dems floated all options even though the dems ruled out either a caucus or a normal primary.

They will argue that the Florida Republicans pushed the change in date, so the dems should not be held accountable. Such argument is flawed since the dems needed to show leadership in their state and did not.

They will argue that disenfranchising these votes will impact the fall election. I really don't buy this one. I think having a re-vote and occupying the state's time during an economic crisis on such an endeavor will annoy and enrage the voters more. Additionally, I doubt either dem will get Florida and the election can be won with any combination of the other 49 states.

They will argue Howard Dean is to blame. This argument also is flawed since all Dean did was present Florida the rules and consequences of violating the rules prior to their actions. It is not like Dean is changing the rules midstream.

They will argue that Florida already voted. This prior election was not contested. If you truly feel it is valid, then why have campaigning at all. Campaigning is geared at helping the voters learn where a candidate stands on the issues. Without campaigning, any such election is a popularity contest not based on issues or the candidates really.

They will argue that it is Obama's fault. This argument is also not true. Obama has simply followed the rules. He should not be punished for doing so. Additionally, Obama was right to question the mail in proposal since it was hastily put together and appeared that it would result in another contested election.

In the end, it is another election and what would it be without Florida having problems and trouble holding a fair election.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:46 AM on 03/18/2008

you forget to mention, that Obama is the only one - who did any kind of campaigning in Florida, by running ads. And stop it with your starting to blame the Clinton's for this fiasco. Good grief... you Obamayts are as pathetic as MSNBC and that Oberman creep who twists anything and everything into a Clinton negative. It's absolutely disgusting, and at this stage of the game does nothing other than reaffirm their utter - contemptible bias against Hillary. I always thought it was illegal to knowingly and deliberately defame any person, including a candidate ! I believe it still is... and I just don't get how this kind of slime... continues to air - in a democracy!

Even if it's information some would rather sweep under the rug.

Besides, I haven't heard any outrage when Senator Clinton was and continues to be abused and dehumanized by the Media.

Get used to it, if you want your guy to be the nominee, cause you can be sure the RIGHTIES will NOT hold back.

On this and similar threads, I've noticed the Hilaristas talking ominously about Tony Rezko and Rev. Wright and how Obama can't possibly be elected with these apparent clouds (i.e., manufactured scandals) hanging over his head.

The implication is that Hillary Clinton would be a much purer candidate in the fall.

Hmmm.....Do Obama's peccadilloes even compare to such Clinton dark spots as Webster Hubbell, Mark Rich, Johnny Chung, Travelgate, Whitewater, Peter Paul, tax returns not made public, Bill Clinton's financial dealings, the Iraq war vote, race-baiting & dirty campaign tactics?

It really takes some nerve for them to point the finger as they do.

Don't forget Peter Paul. The trial should be underway by this summer. Also, we still have no idea how Hillary and Bill raised millions since leaving the White House bankrupt.

You have to stoop pretty low to to bring up Republican driven non-scandals like Travelgate and Whitewater.

What a disqusting comment by a Obama zealot.

It's not enough for you people to build up your candidate,

You must also destroy and tear at the foundation of Democratic party legacy in the process . Are you members of the Democratic party, or just Obama personality cult followers? The answer is clear.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:22 AM on 03/18/2008

Whitewater would never have even been a story if Bill and Hillary had released the records when this issue came up opposed to hiding them. That was what started the whole issue going. The Clintons refused to release documents, so everyone started to assume that there was something there. People went to jail and lost their careers all because the Clintons wanted to hide a questionable real estate deal.

Now Hillary is showing the same secrecy yet again.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:18 PM on 03/18/2008

Anyone who is not blinded by the so-called light knows how desperately close the general election will be in the fall. The DNC are the only ones who cannot see the huge blunder they have made with the party in a year that is ripe for a democrat to take the highest office in the land.

Dean, Kerry, Gore and Bradley who all lost bids as President because they could not unite the party to include Hispanics Regan Democrats as well as Clinton supporters. (Please do you homework with any replies and I will give tangible and specific examples that can be fact checked).

Now the arrogance of the DNC and Dean to screw around with the Michigan and Florida voters, for whatever reason, excludes more voters from supporting the DNC and democrats in the fall.

Frankly I really do not get it, they are hell bent to take the party down because they want a DNC with so many exclusionary aspects, again for whatever reason, that they cannot see that they are succeeding to reject a majority of Americans needed to actually win the election in the fall. These folks cannot hide their abject bias toward the very people they need to win. Call it elitism, arrogance or whatever; the result is now taking a familiar form...

the Democrats, stealing defeat from the jaws of victory, again!

Last evening someone from the Obama campaign called. I cut him off and said "Don't ask me for a donation. This bickering between Clinton and Obama has to stop. They are making it possible for McCain to walk into the WH. Why can't they do what the republicans do, PRETEND to like each other for party unity? I am disgusted, and will not make any contributions." Then I hung up. Hopefully, if enough people point this out they can get it over with. I dread to think of a McCain/Jeb Bush WH.

You're a moron Colmore. Clinton has started the bickering between these two. So, why blame Obama? For defending himself? You're like someone who sees two kids fighting and thinks they're both little hooligans without even bothering to consider that maybe only one of them is and the other one had no choice. So, keep your money and instead use it to buy some books and try to become a little smarter.
