Mel Gibson And Britney Spears Have Been 'Meeting Regularly'

Mel Gibson and Britney Spears's dinner over the weekend wasn't their first meeting.

The pair and their families have met a number of times since Spears checked out from her second hospitalization last month, a source tells PEOPLE.

"Mel and his wife Robin clearly saw a woman in crisis and wanted to extend themselves in any way possible," the source says.

"There's just a handful of people in the world who understand the kind of intense attention that Britney goes through, and how to raise a family with some semblance of privacy and how to keep one's family intact and out of the limelight," the source adds.

Having had to explain to my six year-old neice why it is not appropriate for any woman to attend public events without wearing any underware, as Ms. Spears is prone to do, or leave your children unattend while you have illicit sexual liasons, or engage in drug or alcohol experimentation, I really do not believe that Ms. Spears is the bastion of goodness that American values should be weighed against.

If Mel Gibson is trying to stay sober, then this makes sense. Alcoholics have long learned that one of the ways to stay sober is to help other alcoholics. As a alcoholic, Gibsons may be able to reach Spears in a way that a non-alcoholic can.

That is a very erudite, compassionate, and well reasoned analysis of the possible motivations of Mr. Gibson having dinner with Ms. Spears. Let me offer another, Mr. Gibson is a self-absorbed incredibly wealthy narcisscist racist bigot with a God complex who refuses to ever accept the very condtions of attonment that he lays out for his most recent transgression and then re-emerges only in time for a PR blitz designed to promote his newest Hollywood venture. Now see this is a feel good story in America, today, I mean even Mr. Hagee and Mr. Farakhan can cuddle up together and share a cup of cheer over this tale of blessed union of great minds and intellects. Ms. Spears, the latest in a long line of young startlets that has become an icon for young women in this nation to equate promiscuity, lack of responsibility, unsafe sexual practices, narcotic and alcohol abuse, impaired driving, and in general a bi-polar personality - with success. And, then we have Mr. Gibson, who finds the Pope not to be a real Catholic, is an anti-semite, is a bigot, has a proclivity towards violent and threatening outbursts while driving or walking impaired, and let's not forget lying to every Jewish, Catholic, and human rights organization in the US about his intention after his most recent bigoted out burst to make public as well as private amends.
