White Male Vote Critical For Democrats

In the fierce campaign between Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, a battle dominated by questions of race and gender, white men have emerged as perhaps the single critical swing constituency.

The competition for the support of white men, particularly those defined as working class, will shape the showdown between Clinton and Obama in Pennsylvania's Democratic presidential primary on April 22. Obama (Ill.) won majorities among those voters in what appeared to be breakthrough victories in Wisconsin and Virginia last month. But he badly lost working-class white men to Clinton (N.Y.) in Ohio and Texas two weeks ago, keeping the outcome of the Democratic race in doubt indefinitely.

Obama lost in NY. But Guess what? Obama got zero votes in Harlem. There were 60 such precincts of NY state where Obama's vote counts were zero. Can you believe that? I am not making this up; check with NY Times. In New Hempshire, Obama's votes were counted as Hillary's votes. Again, Check with NY Times. A great way to win! I wonder why we blame the Republicans? I saw the other day, Bill Clinton was bragging on CNN that Hillary beat Obama in Harlem.

once again we have to put up with ridiculous hunting photo ops, flagwaving at nascar, contrived sports team allegiances, jet airplane rides, and what have you. the last gasps of losing democrats are drawn in such stereotypical air. the way to appeal to white men is to tell them that their grasping jingoist rich man politics has driven this country into the ground and it's their fault. tell them to quit being sports simpletons and driving pig trucks. and tell them to quit bawling and whining like their little wimp boys rush and hannity. just tell them everyone else hates them for their baseless superiority act and to shape up if they expect to lead and get taken seriously. and their war is in the toilet and they will die with it's stain. that way you can really talk about change without being a lying hypocrite.
obviously i totally reject identification as an american white male. i am a humanist intellectual dedicated to the destruction of the nation-state as a human institution. i don't work for anybody. i don't "serve" anybody. i expect the president to work for me. i believe the individual is above the state. there is absolutely no reason why i should be participating in any of this at all. except, it's really, really important for me to distance myself from a perjorative race-sex identity that has become a joke. i'm surprised they didn't show homer simpson. i also reject the simplistic patronizing reduction of the issue to who i want for my boss, as well as the matthews condescension: who i want to drink beer with. i know who and what the president is and i don't need to simplify that to understand what's involved. i want especially to emphasize that i don't need the likes of fox news to protect my delicate tender sensibilities from Rev Wright's challenging critique of american foreign policy. i'm not a right-wing wimp. i am delighted that rev wright has contributed to the discussion. i'm not a little white boy who runs to momma when REAL change hits the radar.

Maybe its time for Obama to run against racism. Instead of avoiding the issue maybe he should confront it head on. Instead of pretending he can hang out with guys in the VFW, maybe he should start the conversation about how they really feel about a black man being their president. An maybe he should tell them how he feels about being a black man that wants to lead all of America.

There is no question he has the intelligence, the character and the voice to do this. Does he have the courage to take this kind of a risk?

I don't think he has a choice. Whether you want to blame the media, or Pastor Wright, or Bill and Hillary, race is now part of the discussion. Obama can't continue as the "race-less" candidate. These white men are not going to be talked out of thinking Obama as black. What they might be talked into is why this particular black man would be the best president for all of us.

Obama often refers to Wright as being "like an old uncle, who sometimes says things I don't agree with." Wright is not Obama"s "uncle" " a person born into a blood relationship " but a man he has cultivated for decades as a close friend, mentor and adviser. I don't want a boss with hate in his heart because it will come out when things don't go his way.

I think Rev Wright is an adopted father to Obama. I consider Rev Wright a Black Nationalist.

Maybe Obama would not describe himself as a Black Nationalist, but he seems to have the attitude of one toward white people as a group. No white person is allowed to criticize him or they are a racist. This is a Black Nationalist view.

Obama chose to run for the office of the land with the most power. He has little experience. Some say he is a natural born leader. What in the world do you have to base this opinion on? Obama's own books about himself? What are you buying into for goodness sake? That, based on a man's DNA, he would be good for the country? What evidence is there that he can even handle power responsibly, let alone the power of all resources of this country at his disposal? Why would any white man turn that power over to a man who has the experience of a community organizer?

This man, Obama, is a false prophet. Yes, it would be a revolution that he causes in this country if nominated or elected. This is not the revolution I want. The means create the end. Obama is trying to steal this election from real people - from real voters.

Obama is not showing any actions that I would describe as unifying among democratic voters and for the American people.

He sounds like Rev Wright. He acts like Rev Wright. Please wake up - white people.

There's a reason why so many affluent white males are going for Obama. As one who fits that demographic, I think it's because he is objectively the best leader. Obama's calm, measured, sensible, thoughtful approach is attractive. Affluent white men don't have the same level of race-gender influence in making their decision.

One practical business question I have asked myself and others: Who would you rather have as your boss - Obama, Hillary or McCain?

I'd personally rank them in that order. I'd guess that if Obama was my boss that thinking outside the box would be encouraged, and I'd be in an organization that rewarded achievement. Having Hillary as a boss might be exciting and fast-paced, but one could easily get lost in the shuffle and there would be a lot of energy applied to subterfuge and damage control. I tend to think that working for McCain would pretty much stink, as it would be pretty top-down and his hot head would surface often enough to make a lot of days miserable.

Other questions to ask would be, which of the three would you rather have as CEO of the company you work for? Leading your local school board? As your local mayor? Running your local hospital?

Obama is a leader. A natural-born leader. That's why he gets the affluent white male vote.

I've asked the "boss" question to my friends who are undecided in this election. It's nearly always led to an "aha" moment and crystallized their feelings in favor of Senator Obama.

Continuing your examples, Senator Obama would be the best kind of boss for anyone who wants to be part of the solution. He would challenge the team to put forth their best efforts and solicit input from everyone, especially opinions that run contrary to his own. He would set the guidelines and the overall objective, then the team would feel free to roll out the actual work on thier own.

Senator Clinton would be the kind of boss who has a group of fiercely loyal supporters, but she would also encourage an "us vs. them" mentality, where those outside the inner circle would feel excluded. Senator Clinton would be the kind of boss who would do everything for her favorites, but she would suppress dissension and expect the team to just do what she told them. Team members would not feel they could vary from the plan, and their opinions would be restricted to agreement with the boss.

we just spent 7 years with a CEO executive in the white house.
I don't see the benefit of that.

I want a tried and experienced STATESMAN not a general manager.

Obama is a light-weight when it comes to international experience. andhe is an untried and unteted quantity when it comes to governing

Having lived in other countries just doesn't cut it, and having the best of intentions isn't worth the paper its written on

We are between a rock an a hard place here

Hillary brings bags of experience (her husband) and bags of ill-will

Obama brings nothing but good intentions and a hope and a prayer he can hit the ground running. and his outsider stance means he brings little leverage to get anyone to break with their K-street sponsors.

I don't want a "boss" in the white house, I want an experience, tested, person , not a pig in a poke.

You made some good points. However, the Clinton campaign has obviously reached the conclusion of this article, that she needs the white male vote. There's an opinion in the LA Times that ties into a buzzflash.com article regarding Hillary's campaign and the whole Geraldine Ferraro incident.

The implication is that Hillary Clinton's campaign was using a page from Richard Nixon's playbook of what was called the "Southern Strategy." Basically Clinton's campaign wanted to put a stop to white males voting for Obama, so they played the "affirmative action" card. You know, he must of got to where he is because he is black, affirmative action helped him. The Clinton campaign is trying to use a resentment of affirmative action to get the white male vote. Think this is crazy? A Seattle Times survey of white males found 75% agreed with a statement in the survey that unqualified minorities get hired over qualified whites most or some of the time.

The LA Times opinion also makes a statement that I totally agree with. This pitting of whites vs blacks will greatly impact the Democratic party and alienate African Americans from the party if allowed to continue.

I always thought the Democratic party was about diversity and inclusiveness. The Clintons are trying to turn it into an all whites club to give her the nomination. If this is allowed to continue, I'm not sure if I want to belong to the Democratic party any more as it will just be a mirror version of the Republican party.

This primary has become bigger than just Obama vs Clinton. It is fast becoming a question of what the Democratic party stands for and how many will be left standing behind the Democratic party banner after the "shock and awe" tactics of the Clintons.

If the white male vote is critical for the Demorats to win, then it seems to me we would not want to put forth a candidate that could quite possibly alienate this group. I don't want to jump to conclusions as it relates to Obamas latest troubles with his pastor's remarks, but lets' be honest, they were not remarks that would make anyone feel comfortable including me and I'm a black woman. This may be exactly the reason the superdelegates were created--to help determine the candidate who in the end will have the best chance of being elected. I'm not casting aspersions on Obama, but circumstances surrounding his deep connection to this person who does not appear to be as unifying a force as one would typically think a pastor would be, is our new reality in this circumstance. I really don't think that had this information been available from the start, people would have reacted to him in the same way. It's too bad because there appears to be an element of deception here, which is now raising doubts in the minds of many people.

Lets just throw everyone under the bus that we know who has been controversial. Family members and all. There is nothing in the history of Obama that in any way suggests that he has embraced and in fact demonstrated the bitter feelings that Rev. Wright spoke of. Period. But, we live in a TMZ, slash and burn, follow the bouncing penis society. All that want to continue to live like this, raise your hands, step aside and let the rest of us try and save this country. People are so worried about Obama's associations...I am worried why so many CIA operatives, and war mongering military people are for Hillary. I am worried about all of the corporate lobbyists that are supporting her. I am worried about her sudden friendship with Rupert Murdoch, and Bill's closer and closer relationships with the far right and their water carriers like Rush Limbaugh. If that doesn't trouble you, or McCain's numerous associations...well, I guess we'll just continue the spiral into hell over the next four years.

I am an older, white, registered Independent, and I was not a Clinton or Obama supporter. Personally, I wanted Biden, Dodd or Edwards to get the nomination, but since that didn't happen I will vote for whoever gets the nomination just to try to keep another RepubliCON out of the White House.

No matter how you feel about either candidate, now is the time we need to all PULL TOGETHER to make sure McSame is defeated. Don't waste your vote on a 3rd party candidate. A "protest" vote for a 3rd party candidate may make you feel a little better, but it really doesn't do you one damn bit of good. It's time for the people to TAKE AMERICA BACK!

Also, if you currently have a RepubliCON Senator or Representative you need to work to make sure they are defeated so we can have a Democratic super majority in both houses of Congress.

Yes, in case anyone forgot, the dominant half of the majority of Americans (which controls a disproportionately larger chunk of the electoral college) is an important voting block.

The title should be "working class White male vote critical for Democrats. "The affluent white males all seem to be going for Obama.
