WASHINGTON — President Bush says he has no doubts about launching the unpopular war in Iraq despite the "high cost in lives and treasure," arguing that retreat now would embolden Iran and provide al-Qaida with money for weapons of mass destruction to attack the United States.

Bush is to mark the fifth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq on Wednesday with a speech at the Pentagon. Excerpts of his address were released Tuesday night by the White House.

At least 3,990 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the war in 2003. It has cost taxpayers about $500 billion and estimates of the final tab run far higher. Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph E. Stiglizt and Harvard University public finance expert Linda Bilmes have estimated the eventual cost at $3 trillion when all the expenses, including long-term care for veterans, are calculated.

Democrats offered a different view from Bush's.

"On this grim milestone, it is worth remembering how we got into this situation, and thinking about how best we can get out," said Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich. "The tasks that remain in Iraq _ to bring an end to sectarian conflict, to devise a way to share political power, and to create a functioning government that is capable of providing for the needs of the Iraqi people are tasks that only the Iraqis can complete."

In his remarks, Bush repeated his oft-stated determination to prosecute the war into the unforeseen future.

"The successes we are seeing in Iraq are undeniable, yet some in Washington still call for retreat," the president said. "War critics can no longer credibly argue that we are losing in Iraq, so now they argue the war costs too much. In recent months, we have heard exaggerated estimates of the costs of this war.

"No one would argue that this war has not come at a high cost in lives and treasure, but those costs are necessary when we consider the cost of a strategic victory for our enemies in Iraq," Bush said.

Story continues below

Bush has successfully defied efforts by the Democratic-led Congress to force troop withdrawals or set deadlines for pullouts. It is widely believed he will endorse a recommendation from Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, for no additional troop reductions, beyond those already planned, until at least September.

The U.S. now has about 158,000 troops in Iraq. That number is expected to drop to 140,000 by summer in drawdowns meant to erase all but about 8,000 troops from last year's buildup.

"If we were to allow our enemies to prevail in Iraq, the violence that is now declining would accelerate and Iraq could descend into chaos," Bush said. "Al-Qaida would regain its lost sanctuaries and establish new ones fomenting violence and terror that could spread beyond Iraq's borders, with serious consequences to the world economy.

"Out of such chaos in Iraq, the terrorist movement could emerge emboldened with new recruits ... new resources ... and an even greater determination to dominate the region and harm America," Bush said in his remarks. "An emboldened al-Qaida with access to Iraq's oil resources could pursue its ambitions to acquire weapons of mass destruction to attack America and other free nations. Iran could be emboldened as well with a renewed determination to develop nuclear weapons and impose its brand of hegemony across the broader Middle East. And our enemies would see an American failure in Iraq as evidence of weakness and lack of resolve."

Looking back, Bush said, "Five years into this battle, there is an understandable debate over whether the war was worth fighting ... whether the fight is worth winning ... and whether we can win it. The answers are clear to me: Removing Saddam Hussein from power was the right decision and this is a fight America can and must win."

Bush said the past five years have brought "moments of triumph and moments of tragedy," from free elections in Iraq to acts of brutality and violence.

"The terrorists who murder the innocent in the streets of Baghdad want to murder the innocent in the streets of American cities. Defeating this enemy in Iraq will make it less likely we will face this enemy here at home," Bush said.

Bush said anew that the war was faltering a little more than a year ago, prompting him in January 2007 to order a big troop buildup known as the "surge."

"The surge has done more than turn the situation in Iraq around; it has opened the door to a major strategic victory in the broader war on terror," he said.

"In Iraq, we are witnessing the first large-scale Arab uprising against Osama bin Laden, his grim ideology, and his terror network. And the significance of this development cannot be overstated ," the president said.

"The challenge in the period ahead is to consolidate the gains we have made and seal the extremists' defeat. We have learned through hard experience what happens when we pull our forces back too fast _ the terrorists and extremists step in, fill the vacuum, establish safe havens and use them to spread chaos and carnage."

No matter how many times the strategic importance of winning in Iraq is explained to liberals, they still profess ignorance.

So let's put it this way.

We're staying, and winning, without your approval or consent.

The only place you're staying is in the trailer park.. grow a pair and join the armed forces.. then your b.s. comments would at least be coming from someone who does more than hide under george bush's skirts while his fellow citizens die for no reason.

We don't have a say.

Latest is the Bush White House is undermining the Second Amendment. That's right. The Republicans want to take away your guns. Look it up. It's happening right under our noses.

When you view that in the context of the knowledge that the Patriot Act was meant to be used against American citizens, well, be afraid.

If you had half of a brain, then you would most certainly know that strategicly speaking, we've already FUBAR'd this up. There is no way the invasion and occupation could provide any strategic victory in an arab country for which we have virtually no leverage. Our occupation only serves to undermine our nations values in the eyes of the rest of the world. You sir as well as this administration are idiots.

I'm sure Dumbya was saying it was worth it because somebody did the math for him: the millions in profits made PER DEAD OR MAIMED SOLDIER is phenomenal.

I know a young couple, the husband is in the Guard. He has been in Iraq twice. He is stateside right now, doing the weekend Guard thing, and has NO HEALTH INSURANCE. He got pneumonia and had to go to the hospital and they are saddled with $9,000 in bills. To top it off, he is about to be called back to Iraq for a third tour.

How can this be? How can a soldier have no health insurance between Iraq tours? Despicable.

That's how they support our troops.

George W. Bush has actually made millions of Americans ashamed to be American.

He is nothing but an embarrassment. And his clueless pappy and black-hearted mommy, too.

Could someone just define what 'Victory' in Iraq means? We looked for WMDs, we brought down Saddam, the had elections, what is it that defines 'Victory'?

Victory for Bush means being safely back on his ranch and cutting down shrubs, while making several hundred thousand dollars per speech.

Teritt, more and more, I'm thinking "victory" is exactly what GWB says it is. If you look at how his analysis of the surge "working" has played out, it's quite clear he really doesn't care what the casualties and lack of political progress in Iraq indicate. If he says it's working, it's working!

So I predict he'll declare "Victory!" on the last day of his presidency, just in time for a Democrat to have to clean up his mess.

Treasure? TREASURE!!!!!????? Treasure is something you find, something you were looking for, you know---- like Treasure of the Sierra Madre, you moronic, wire-tapping, torturing little chimp of a President (GAG!) What we have lost is billions and billions of newly printed dollars for which there is no backing, no collateral, and no accounting. The bill is in the mail, Georgie-boy, and it's not being sent to your house. It will come to my house addressed to: "The future grandchildren of addressee-please respond in 30 years." If you think there is a credit crunch now.......

Bush continues his time-honored practice of stating what he wishes were true.

Every once in a while, we get a glimpse of candor into Bush's soul, like when he couldn't remember a single mistake he had made, or when he told us that he was lying before the 2006 elections about firing Rumsfeld.

Bush seems to embrace Colonel Nathan Jessup's famous mantra: "You can't handle the truth!"

There is, for those who hope to make history, a fate worse than impeachment, even death.

Silence.

No library, no one to donate funds for one. His party in shambles....all who enabled him driven from
office at the next opportunity to vote them out.

Retreat - yes, to Crawford, a compound in another country - even better, far away, where not even for
tradition's sake must we gather to pay any kind of respect.

Let them send namless staff off to a walmart for groceries, and let the movers and shakers
ignore them while they try to rebuild America.

Let no historian try to figure out the mind of a C grade bully.

Let no historian try to capture the control over him that Cheney and Rove had and used to our detriment. Let history record that he was simply a stupid bully, putty in the hands of crafty
men with agendas of their own.

Let the oil industry oil peter out....there is a limited supply left anywhere in the world as it is... The new green industries, the new manufacturing associated with the use of alternative fuels will all trace back to Al Gore and his intelligent, gifted insight.

With the oil will go the military industrial complex that is making money bloody hand over bloody fist....blood they don't shed, blood of innocent people in a country we attacked without cause.

Silence.

EVERY time this incompetent imbecile opens his mouth I cringe. What a heartless, souless, lying bastard. The war was worth it? A war based on lies? A war not fought for WMDs, or mushroom cloud threats or al quada links to 9/11, but fought because of GREED. A greed for oil and war profiteering. Almost 4,000 troops have lost their lives in biggest blunder in U.S. foreign policy history. Countless thousands more are severely wounded. Some estimates have said that the Iraqis have lost over 1,000,000 people. The war was worth it? Dumbya truly is despicable.

Is there any realistic reason why this man can't be either A. tried and convicted of war crimes and a true terrorist himself to this country. Or B. strung up in public square and torn a apart at the limbs for all spectators to watch?

Honestly this man is a war criminal, and a true terrorist to this country. I can't say he is solely responsible for the downfall of our economy, People with credit cards and no responsibility for them owe themselves partial blame there, but his war that costs us billions is largely responsible. He is taking this country down while we sit and watch.

It does our country no good now to criticize Bush. Bush got away with murder and we couldn't stop him.

And McCain would be no different, possibly worse.

All our energies must focus on the Dems with the hope that they would do something to stop, if not reverse the damage.

We must force Dem candidates to talk about Iraq. And we must force them to not just talk about the "surge" - and discussions of whether it is working or not working.

Bush committed arson. With his "surge" he shows up with a fire engine to put out the fire now engulfing the whole neighborhood and beyond. And, somehow, the whole discussion now is how well his fire fighting is going.

What about the crime of arson itself? What about accountability?

In this primary election, we must force the Dems back to the topic of how this fraud called Iraq war started, who lied, why, and how can we hold the criminals accountable.

And then do the same in the general election.

"5 years in Iraq has been worth it."

Absolutely. It was a real boon for the US economy, its world reputation and especially for the dead soldiers and Iraqi civilians. Why not stay there another 100 years for even more boon?

And the Democrats are worried about one Obama's pastor remarks....

Good question. Seems to be impossible to separate 1) being FOR a war and 2) being FOR military expenditures from actually 3) being FOR the equipping, support and responsible use of military forces. The war that's worthless is a WASTE of military life; the expenditures that don't equip our people to deal with an actual threat is a THEFT from them, but the Republicans get a total free pass on both things just because they claim to be FOR the military. I think its irrational, something to do with a fundamental self-doubt about killing for money and the unspoken fear that unless it stays wrapped in absolute self-righteousness the shame will get out of control.

Saddam Hussein as a national socialist was working to turning the people into Iraqis. And I think that's what we wanted to get rid of. You know, we didn't want a strong modern Arab nation sitting on top of the 3rd largest oil reserves in the world. That's not justification for war; that's not constitutional.

Daddy Bush said he would not tolerate it! Well here we are.
