Clinton Foundation Received $500,000 From Wal-Mart

stumble digg reddit del.ico.us news trust

Lost amid the blistering pace of campaign news was the announcement, made this past Saturday, that Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer had donated a half-million dollars to a project of former President Clinton's global foundation.

The donation, which was made to the Clinton Global Initiative University, will be allocated for educational purposes, including funding college students and encouraging universities to engage on issues such as energy and climate change, global health, and poverty alleviation. And they reflect what some observers say is a growing effort by the retail giant to soften its image within progressive circles.

But Wal-Mart, to a large extent, still remains a pariah among Democrats for its poor labor and environmental practices. And a donation of $500,000 to an individual so closely associated with a leading White House candidate, is more than enough to raise the eyebrows of watchdog organizations.

"We are concerned with all contributions that are this large," said Mary Boyle, the VP of Communications at the non-profit, Common Cause. "They are typically used to buy access and influence. Now I think the question here is what is Wal-Mart trying to gain here? Are they trying to gain access and influence to Sen. [Hillary] Clinton, or do they have another agenda, which could be trying to establish a track record of doing better in the causes of global warming and human rights and poverty. So, I don't know what they are trying to do, but certainly any contribution that large should pique interest."

Aides to the former presidents stressed that neither Clinton nor his foundation would see a dime of Wal-Mart's money and, subsequently, would have no reason to be beholden to the company's political interests.

"The money doesn't go to the foundation. It comes from the Wal-Mart foundation and it will be used to fund those student made commitments and university made commitments," said one aide. "CGI is the entity that makes this all happen. But they don't collect money from Wal-Mart... They are a facilitator."

It is a point watchdog groups concede, but not something that completely alleviates their anxiety. "Is [Wal-Mart] trying to use other vehicles to give large amounts to the other candidates?" asked Boyle. "Certainly Bill Clinton's charity provides a unique vehicle for this."

Complicating this donation is both the lengthy history the Clintons have with Wal-Mart. While serving as first lady of Arkansas, Hillary Clinton also held a position on the Wal-Mart's board. Her tenure, fellow board members have described, was spent pushing the company to appoint more women in management and become more environmentally conscious in its practices. But, given the company's scorned status among Democrats and union-members, Clinton hardly ever talks about this part of her resume.

The former president, in contrast, has not shied away from Wal-Mart. According to Michael Barbaro of the New York Times, he frequently speaks to the realtor's chief executive, H. Lee Scott Jr., about issues like health care. And he has taken on a public presence in pushing for and praising the company's new environmental practices.

But not everyone is buying into the idea of a new-and-improved Wal-Mart. Some see donations like those the company made to the Clinton foundation as merely a ploy to distract attention from the company's still far-from-progressive policies.

"It follows in Wal-Mart's recent attempts to make themselves look like a responsible corporation with their environmental efforts, and then you have Lee Scott who is announcing at meetings that Wal-Mart is not sure when they will reduce their emissions," said Meghan Scott, a spokesperson for Wake-up Wal-Mart, a watchdog group for the organization. "It is important to look at two things; whether their press releases turn into action, or whether it is simply an attempt to curry favor."

I would prefer Wal-mart giving half a million to Bill Clinton's non profit service foundation, than T Rezko giving $250,000 in campaign contributions to Obama. Are you Obama people insane? It doesn't matter that under duress Obama gave the dough back. Get real.

Walmart has to be the most aggressive about returning a PROFIT to its investors.

What ROI will this investment net?

The Clinton and Bush families are two of the most corrupt political families in our history, they all have been to some extent, Kennedy's included. It's no coincidence that our country has fallen at the hands of their collective leadership. She is no more than a special interest pawn, just like her husband, and George Bush

Well this is no suprise, and no coincidence. This is probably payback for all the favors the Clinton's did for Walmart in the 90's particularly in helping them become the multinational powerhouse they are now. They have no need to buy in now to get access they have had it for years, Hillary Clinton has direct ties to Walmart through Rose Law Firm that go beyond her spot on the board. I'm sur GE has donated a ton too considering they too have direct ties to Ms. Clinton through the Rose Law Firm.

Well,it may surprise you that the Obamas were living off Walmart, but I doubt you would care !
Michelle was paid a very large wage while working for Walmart (treehouse foods) which she promptly quit in May07 ,when Obama began the run for Pres !!!!

I believe you mean retailer not realtor in the 9th paragraph. No doubt $500,000 for helping people does double good for wal*mart and the Clinton foundation, but I doubt she could go much deeper into their pocket. As far as we know, the money was put to good use.

This is great, more money for Gupta/Clinton to swindle the elderly. Gupta's company InfoUSA co-sponsored the 2006 "Clinton Global Initiative".

Gupta, the CEO of InfoUSA, has directed more than $3 million to political campaigns and projects connected with Former President Clinton and Senator Clinton. Mr. Gupta's company, infoUSA, repeatedly rented marketing databases to unscrupulous individuals who used the lists to engage in fraud.

In 2000, Mr. Gupta gave $100,000 to support Mrs. Clinton's Senate bid, and in 2007, in the same way the Hsu did.

Dude(ette?). do some research....

Hillary Clinton's "Senior Adviser", Huma Abedin, is an Indian/Pakistani who grew up in Saudi Arabia until the age of 18. Huma Abedin's family has direct connections to the *founders and financiers* of Al-Qaeda and all their actions to date.

Dr. Abdullah Omar Naseef, a close family member of the Abedins, established Rabita Trust, as an al-Qaeda front to funnel cash to terrorist organizations around the globe, in 1988 with the late Pakistani President. The Secretary-General of the Rabita Trust was one of the founders of al-Qaeda along with Osama bin Laden.

The Clinton's are WAY closer to Bin Laden, unlike the Bush's who are partners with the BinLaden Family but not nec Osama.

This story has little meaning except that Walmart gives some money to help it's tarnished image, which it does regardless of politics. This has nothing to do with the Clintons.

Well, since the money was given to the Clintons, I think it does have something to do with the Clintons. Anytime large sums of money are contributed to a politican, it begs the question of what is expected in return.

Why didn't Hillary demand Health Care for WalMart employees when she was a director at WalMart ?

She did not Hold Sam Walton Accountable when she had the power to provide Walmart employees withthe basic needs of daily living. Now she blames the health care system and the Walton family is worth well over one hundred billion dollars. How Many Walmart families went without health care while they buy mansions and buy politicians favors?

A universal health care system will have to be paid for by all of us it will not exclude the Clinton's Billionaire blood sucking cronies.

If Hillary couldn't exercise her power to hold a company, where she only had to persuade a hand full of people to do the right thing how can we expect her to be the bitch that gets the job done?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:09 PM on 03/18/2008

She actually did get the company to move in two important directions as a junior member of the Board. First, she got Wal-Mart to institute more eco-friendly policies. Second, she helped initiate the promotion of women to management positions. Before her arrival, there was not a SINGLE female manager throughout the entire company!

Since the board consists of twelve members, there is only so much one person can do; in the case of Wal-Mart, if the CEO indicates (as Walton did) that health care and fair wages are a non-starter, the board follows. It's a sad but true fact in American corporations. In other words, Hillary did do some good work as a board member, some progressive work, in fact, but there were limitations on both her power and influence. You cannot fairly fault her for that.

I guess I did'nt realize that Hillary alone was responsible for what ever you percieve Walmart does !!!
You better do some more research, cause Missy Michele worked for Walmart til May 07,she only quit because ....it might look bad while Obama is running for Pres !!!!

hey doesn't Walmart buy all of their product from China? What happen to buy American made?

Oh I remember NAFTA-SHAFTA
Thanks Bill and Hillary, we could have had health care but we got the shaft with NAFTA
Yeah that's why Hillary should be president!

sandals:
Sam Walton's rule was to buy American as long as he could. He even propped up some of his small suppliers in America until U.S. trade policy made it impossible to compete with other stores.

By the way, did you know Walmart trucks showed up in New Orleans with truckloads of supplies before FEMA responded. They opened their stores in New Orleans and allowed the police to provide supplies to people in need and let the police use their stores as headquarters. The looting was sensationalism by the MSM.

They are one of the few companies remaining in this Country that operate more effeciently than the George W. Bush "Broken Government".

That is $500,000 is just a drop in the bucket compared to the millions the Walmart Foundation gives to worthy causes every year and Bill Clinton's foundation is a worthy cause.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:51 AM on 03/19/2008

But would Hillary give the money back to buy Walmart employees the health care Walmart won't provide them?

What do you think?!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:00 PM on 03/18/2008

Well, many in the Dem party would say this is a far worse partnership than Rev. Wright. This company actually impact millions, not a few thousand members.

Unless of course you believe in forgiveness and reconciliation. If so, then the Wright issue is way in the rear view mirror and WM can do good. If not, then this continued Clinton marriage to Wal-Mart should cause you to give up your Hillary vote ASAP. Unless of course you're a neo-con.

Hillary Clinton can step outside her home in the morning to look up at the sun, and by the afternoon HuffPost will have seven bloggers claiming she's the cause of the drought in the Southeast, the wildfires in the west, and the tornado in Atlanta. If you want to talk shady contributions, how about those three top Bush fundraisers that have been working for Obama since the beginning of his campaign, according to a November article in Time? And what about nuclear giant Exelon's contributions in return for Obama watering down legislation requiring public disclosure of radiation links in Illinois, according to a piece in the New York Times? Of course you've already heard about Rezko and the quarter million in tainted cash (and counting...). For more on this and behind-the-scenes insight on this election, I've posted an article at thecityedition.com. Here's a direct:
