Heather Mills Reportedly Throws Water On McCartney's Lawyer, Judge Calls Her Claims 'Exorbitant'

LONDON — Heather Mills was a less than candid court witness whose $250 million divorce claim was exorbitant, a judge said in his ruling on her divorce from Paul McCartney.

The judgment by Hugh Bennett was released Tuesday, after a court rejected Mills' attempt to block publication.

On Monday, Bennett awarded Mills a $48.6 million divorce settlement after her four-year marriage to the former Beatle. Mills had sought almost $250 million, while McCartney had offered $31.6 million, including Mills' own assets.

In his ruling, the judge said Mills' claim "is and was unreasonable, indeed exorbitant."

He also said Mills' evidence was "not just inconsistent and inaccurate but also less than candid. Overall she was a less than impressive witness."

McCartney's lawyers didn't object to publication, but Mills claimed details in the ruling could compromise the security of her 4-year-old daughter Beatrice.

"Miss Mills believes her daughter will be put in real danger. It is most disturbing," said lawyer David Rosen, who represented Mills in court. She did not attend the hearing.

Mills, 40, walked away from court with a settlement worth about $34,000 for every day of her marriage to the 65-year-old McCartney. But it was only a fifth of what she had sought and a fraction of McCartney's $800 million fortune.

Mills declared that she was "very, very, very pleased."

The settlement included a lump sum of $33 million, plus the assets Mills currently holds worth $15.6 million.

Some legal experts were surprised the former model did not get more.

"In the scheme of things, it's quite surprisingly low," said Patricia Hollings, a divorce specialist with London law firm Finers Stephens Innocent. "It is only offering her about 6 percent of his assets. In terms of high-wealth cases it's very low."

McCartney left after the ruling without comment. But Mills emerged from the three-hour private hearing for an impromptu news conference on the courthouse steps _ railing against McCartney's lawyer and accusing McCartney of underestimating his wealth.

"All of you that have researched know that it was always going to be a figure between 20 and 30 million" pounds, said a visibly agitated Mills. "Paul was offering a lot less than that. ... So we're very, very, very pleased."

Mills criticized McCartney's attorney Fiona Shackleton, who represented Prince Charles in his divorce from Princess Diana.

"She has called me many, many names before even meeting me when I was in a wheelchair," said Mills, whose own legal team, in an ironic twist, was led by Princess Diana's divorce lawyer until she fired them in November.

Shackleton emerged from court Monday with a wet head, reportedly from a glass of water that Mills had dumped on her. Mills told reporters Shackleton had been "baptized in court." McCartney's representatives declined to comment.

McCartney also was ordered to pay $70,000 a year for Beatrice, and to pay for her nanny and school fees.

Mills said that was a paltry amount. "She's obviously meant to travel B class while her father travels A class," she said.

The settlement doesn't rank with the most expensive celebrity divorces. Basketball star Michael Jordan and singer-songwriter Neil Diamond both had to pay out about $150 million to settle their divorces, according to Forbes magazine.

British divorce settlements are generally lower than those in the U.S. But Mills' settlement is only about half of the biggest contested divorce settlement in British history _ the 48 million pounds (about $90 million at the time) that insurance tycoon John Charman was ordered to pay his ex-wife in 2006.

Mills and McCartney went to court last month to decide on her share of his fortune, which had been estimated at as much as $1.6 billion. However, the judge found that McCartney's total worth was about $800 million.

Now that the case is over, Mills implored the media to just let it be.

"And I really hope now that me and my daughter can have a life and not be followed every single day and that is why I've come out, to give it closure," she said.

Dear Heather,
Now that you squeezed Paul McCartney for every possible penny you could get, could you please just go away and disappear, so that we do not have to look at your pitiful-gold-digging-face any more? We would all appreciate it!
Sincerely,
Everyone that I know

This female attorney doesn't care what's fair to Heather or her daughter, she just wants her payment which is understood to be close to $3 million dollars.

I can only imagine how insulting she was to Heather in court, not living in Heather's shoes. You can be sure Paul’s attorney was railing against her and trying to push every button to further humiliation Heather.

Paul is an abusive husband, yet very few people seem to care. At one point Paul is heard over the telephone, speaking with his older daughter, hoping that Heather will kill herself so he won't have to giver her anything. Nice huh?

I'm sure Paul's attorney got exactly what she deserved. In the picture, with her hair wet, she actually looked smug. It seems she's really pleased that she got under Heather's skin.

I hope Heather can put all this unpleasantness behind her and be happy.

Lucille,
How is it EVERYONE else can see through Mills yet for you, she is a "victim"?

She doesn't have the fame of a Paul McCartney, but that does not mean she was not a good wife or that she was not a good mother. Linda McCartney never really seemed happy in any of the press/media interviews she did. She always seemed to fit that depiction of the abused wife, albeit verbal. In Heather's case it was physical and verbal. Perhaps Paul was always the real reason the Beatles broke up and not Yoko. Think about it, even as an aging performer, he still chose not to perform with George or Ringo as if he saw himself as superior. Just my opinion, none of you have to agree.

So, Paul is an abusive husband? Could you please give us details from your marriage to him? Otherwise, maybe you can just take your ESP somewhere else.

Never wrote a song. Never played a note. Just played old Paul for a fool on the hill.
Should have had a prenup.

Agree, agree, agree. But why would a man marry a woman 25 years his junior? Can he possibly believe that it's going to work?

I hope Shackleton sues Mills for battery and is awarded 48.6 million dollars.

On the one hand, it is wrong to throw water on someone. On the other, she looks better with wet hair. This might just get her hair style out of the early 1980s.

She's getting all those millions plus $70,000 a year for the baby and she claims that Paul wants the child to be a pauper? There are families that don't live on that much.

And doesn't she think people will scoff when she whines that Paul's attorney called her names while she was in her wheelchair, come on woman, you were on "Dancing With The Stars", no one is going to treat you as though you are crippled just because you take you leg off for court. You embarass the rest of us disabled folks when you do that.

I hope the attorney sues her for battery - Lord knows it would serve her right.

What a tacky little tart! Sir Paul must be SO relieved to finally be rid of her...

It's like my ol' daddy used to say: "Son, if you get yourself a good woman, there's nothing better. If you get a bad woman, there's nothing worse."

Unreal, a simple mil or two would have been more than fair.

She asked for a quarter of a billion dollars but admitted to being "very, very, very pleased" with a fifth of that. I guess she thought (in secret) the what she was asking for was actually pretty ridiculous too, along with the judge and EVERYONE else. Well, she's been 'outed'. And she is concerned for her daughter. I would say the biggest concern for Beatrice will be having such a mom. Why did they give her custody, anyway? Oh well, who cares anyway? Paul dissed Lauryn Hill, can't be all good.
