McCain: Obama

McCain: Obama "Does Not Share" Wright's Controversial Views

A classic exchange between Sean Hannity and John McCain last night (bolding mine):...

HANNITY: He's been -- but he's been going to the church for 20 years. His pastor -- the church gave a lifetime achievement award to one of the biggest racists and anti-Semites in the country, Louis Farrakhan. Would you go to a church that -- where your pastor supported Louis Farrakhan?

MCCAIN: Obviously, that would not be my choice. But I do know Sen. Obama. He does not share those views.

And, this is why McCain, not Clinton is my second choice for President after Barack Obama.
Signed, A lifelong Democrat

And why isn't Hillary Clinton also sticking up for Barack Obama on this divisive (nationally and within the Party) issue? Oh ya, because she stands to gain from it. What a born leader she is -- she'd make a great president.

What is she supposed to defend him for - for bein a part of this hate-filled Reverend's congregration for over 20 years, and considering him his mentor/relilgious leader?

Come on, take your blinders off.

She has not a single ounce of personal or political integrity or honesty.

i think she did comment on the speech BO gave. How it was important, how she is glad he gave it, stuff like that.

Boy, I hate to say it, but John McCain just passed Hillary Clinton as my #2 choice after Obama. If she gets the Democratic nomination, I sure hope she can make me change my mind because I have never voted for a Republican in a presidential race, and hope like hell not to have to.

I really do with to thank McCain for this response. I've decided I like the "high road".

Reflecting over the last few difficult days, I wanted to know what it was that I have most admired about Obama, what I have most appreciated about his message. And today, sitting here in Alabama with my parents (both in their seventies, white), I realized what it is: Obama makes me want to be a better person; makes me want to have an even better country; makes me want to be positive and not negative.

I live just south of Cullman County, Alabama. The county was famous for years for a sign that read, "[n-word] don't let the sun go down on you in Cullman". The county is still 96% white. The only blacks in the county resided in a town called "Colony" (that's right, "Colony"). But this year, that county elected its first black representative to the Alabama State House. For most people from around here, this would have been viewed very recently as a miracle on the order of fish and loaves.

My dad was raised in Cullman. He is not a racist and never has been, despite many negative influences and opportunities. Today, as Obama concluded his speech, my dad took out his handkerchief and wiped tears from his eyes. He looked at me and said, "that man's smart enough to be President". Let's just hope we're smart enough to elect him.

Indeed! Good for McCain. I am so impressed not once did he say, 'I take his word for it' or 'as far as I know."
He slammed the door shut: "But I do know Sen. Obama. He does not share those views.

Bravo to McCain. Good for him.

I pray and dream that the pond scum Hannity and Limbaugh will become irrelavant and seen to be damaging to the country. Obama's speech today moved things in that direction.

I applaud McCain for having the integrity and dignity not to fall into the trap this recent media circus has become.

Good for McCain. He needed clarification about Hagee anyway
and he parlayed that well. Well done, sir.

Now..... about that Iran thing.....:(

I think that McCain has flip-flopped on many of his issues by going against his personal beliefs and views to support his Republican base, this is why I question his judgment and ability to be President, but every now and then he redeems himself and gives hope that he may still have that Maverick in him to buck the conservative Republican base.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:37 PM on 03/18/2008

His flip-flopping is something all candidates do during these elections. They veer one way to win the primary votes and another to win the general election. McCain has long been the strongest Republican candidate, simply because he is not the neocon creation or wannabe like the president or other candidates. Certainly he has attempted to appease that portion of his party to some extent, but the neocons don't own him. It is also true, in my opinion, that McCain has been in Washington long enough to receive the inevitable taint that comes along with the job (Keating five, lobbyist ties, etc.). But, on the balance, he comes off to many people as a man who wants to tell the truth and do the right thing even in opposition to is own party (unfortunately to appease the other Republicans he sometimes toes the line). The Republicans that rail against him for not being a true conservative will either quiet down and get in line or be marginalized within the Republican party. The mainstream of the Republican party accept him overwhelmingly already. The Republicans will have their house in order come election time. I don't know if I can make the same prediction about the Democrats.

Goddamnit John McCain! Stop making it so hard to hate you! Why must you be as civil as a Democrat, while Clinton must be as rancorous as any Republican?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:26 PM on 03/18/2008

It's refreshing to hear that from Mc Cain. A McCain / Obama debate would be much more respectful and civil than the Clinton / Obama primary race.

Well, that's what Coulter and Limbaugh were saying just a few weeks ago ... or at least that McCain was more *like* a Democrat than Hillary.

How sad that his Republican Rival has more respect for him, and is more willing to stand up for him than his Democratic colleague. Thank you, John McCain.

I'm sure McCain would be able to find other things to attack Obama on, but it won't be this, since he's already on record about it.

My guess is that since McCain is making it a non-issue, Hillary will have to follow suit or look like the Wicked Witch of the West.

Well, fairminded people have to give the man credit regardless of supporting him or not!

Sure, Obama made a wonderful speech about race. He always does. But ACTIONS speak louder than words. And his ACTIONS are that he attended that church for TWENTY YEARS, listening to all of those hate-filled speeches without walking out.

So will the REAL Obama please stand up?

And what is this BS about Wright being taken "out of context"? You could pick any of a THOUSAND old newsreels of HITLER, and find him yelling and screaming in a manner VERY similar to that of Rev. Wright.

But would you be taking Hitler's insane ideas "out of context"? No. Some ideas don't NEED a context. When you say "The bible says Gawd day-yum America", that means what he says.

And how many former SS stormtroopers said that they didn't "really" agree with Hitler. But lets face it: If some guy went to Hitler's mass meetings for 20 years, and listening to him ranting and raving, would you not say "you are a Nazi"? Who else but a NAZI would go to Hitler's meetings for 20 years (fortunately Hitler was only around for about 12 years)?

And so with Jeremiah Wright. Who would go to his church for TWENTY YEARS except someone who AGREED with his message of HATE?

There are MANY other GOOD ministers on the South Side of Chicago. There are MANY black ministers who are just as passionate and spirited as Rev. Wright but who base their sermons on LOVE rather than HATE. Because the Holy Spirit is about LOVE and HEALING, rather than about HATE and BLAMING.

So, I'm sorry. But Obama can give the most wonderfulest speech ever written in the whole wide world, but it does not negate those 20 years that he attended Wright's church. And it does not stop intelligent people from wondering what Obama is REALLY about. What is he REALLY going to do when he gets into power.

McCain: wrong on day 1 and many days after that:

Today:

"While in Jordan Tuesday, repeatedly misidentifies which broad category of Iraqi extremists are allegedly receiving support from Iran.Says Iran, a predominately Shiite country, is supplying the mostly Sunni militant group al-Qaeda when officials have said they believe Iran is helping Shiite extremists in Iraq.Bailed out by Joe Lieberman"s whispering."

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

Y'all are haters and need a job. Good for McCain to defend Obama! It's about time we had some real leadership. The Clinton/Bush years are over and we all have much to celebrate. If either win in November it will be a good thing.

I don't agree with most of McCain's comments but he has shown he is a man of honor. I truly believe he will not stoop as low as Hillary in her campaign against Obama. This is why Hillary would definitely lose an election against McCain because she will show that she has no integrity and he does. No doubt right wing 527s will continue to attack any Democratic candidate but McCain will have an honest campaign on the issues.

This speech has a historical context and yet is as current as today. Just as the Constitution is a living document that admits in its very inception that it must change and grow, so too, the America that I know is not fixated on the past but looking toward the future. We can only hope there are enough of us to see this call for unity as an etreaty to become a better place and a better people.
