Obama's Race Speech: Damned If He Does, Damned If He Doesn't

Here's what I know of Barack Obama and the Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Wright is the pastor at a church in Chicago who, at various points in his life, walked into a room and said some pretty objectionable-slash-crazy-ass things about America. Barack Obama may or may not have been in the room at the time when he said these objectionable-slash-crazy-ass things, but he definitely was in the room with Wright at other times, when Wright may or may not have said other objectionable things. It is also apparent that Obama was in the room with Wright at times when Wright said other things, which Obama did not deem objectionable-slash-crazy-ass, but rather hopeful-slash-optimistic, and those things, said at that time, may have formed the backbone of certain principles that inspired Obama's political life. There may have been other people, in other rooms, who said other things to other people, including potentially Barack Obama, some of which may have been objectionable-slash-crazy-ass. Or not.

Got that? It is confusing. But not so much that I cannot empathize. Some years ago I wrote a graduate-school thesis, in which I believe I remarked that the way William Shakespeare manipulated the heartbeat of his iambic pentameter so as to effortlessly reveal his characters' internal states-of-mind was enough to qualify him as an absolute master of the English language, worthy of continued study and critical praise. But, as it turns out, Shakespeare wrote The Merchant of Venice, which includes a brutally anti-Semitic representation of a major character, and The Taming of the Shrew, which hardly takes an enlightened approach in its depiction of women. So, I guess I should renounce, denounce, reject, repudiate, disavow, disown, cast off, scorn, spurn, blackball, and -- ere the cock crows -- deny thrice for good measure, any previous compliment I may have paid a poet who once said things that I didn't agree with one hundred percent of the time. And Thomas Jefferson owned slaves, so he's a racist, and the university he founded which fueled my fascination with Shakespeare should be summarily rejected, denounced, et al., and maybe the country he helped to found, America, should also be renounced, dissed, and perhaps even damned by God, thus bringing us full circle.

All of this should teach all of us an important lesson: before you are born and proceed upon a life filled with both knowing people who stand in rooms and say things, and complimenting other people who stood in other rooms and said other things, you'd better think it all through! Because what's to be done after you've been caught not repudiating things that other people deem repudiatable? Or worse: what if, after you've repudiated those things, other people say that you didn't repudiate them hard enough?

That is essentially the fine pickle in which Barack Obama finds himself -- one that's entirely of his own making. He's made the fatal mistake of assuming that his "words" and his "explanations" and the "character" he's demonstrated through a lifetime of "actions" is sufficient in assuaging the concerns of voters. But he forgot about the need to satisfy the media. And clearly his previous denunciations of Reverend Wright's remarks have not been sufficient. And if you can't satisfy the media, can you really satisfy the voters, who the media will say aren't satisfied? Probably not.

But if I could ask a question of the media figures who are regularly calling for Obama to reject Wright today, who urged Clinton to reject Geraldine Ferraro the day before and who demanded Obama reject Louis Farrakhan earlier last week, it would be this: what would satisfy you? What action could any of these candidates take to settle the matter -- that they have their own ideas and positions and are not some sort of tabula rasa that sponges up only the most mean-minded things the people with whom they have come in contact with have espoused?

If you believe all the racket and clamor, it would seem that this occasion calls for Barack Obama to do something major, something grandiose, something that leaves no doubt at all that his feelings of rejection toward the statements of Reverend Wright are deep and vast and absolute. Maybe he should go so far as to invite Wright to a media event, and then hit him repeatedly with a large stick of some kind! It is possible, however, that even this might not be enough to satisfy some people, and, indeed, the violent acts, while leaving no doubt as to the ferocity of Obama's repudiation, may go too far, and offend others. Instead, Obama will go before the kliegs tomorrow and deliver a "major speech about race" that will likely actually be a "major speech about some crazy stuff a guy said during a sermon at a black church."

There's a good chance that his "major speech about race" will be sufficient, like the time Mitt Romney gave his "major speech about religion" that everyone loved and which solved all of his problems. But there's also a chance that his speech will fail and spell doom for his candidacy, like the time Mitt Romney gave his "major speech about religion" that everyone thought was phony and made the media remember how awesome John McCain was. If Obama fails to address the matter, it could be bad. But if he does address the matter, the results could be equally ungood, only maybe doubleplus so.

In the end, what will it matter? At some point, there will be other figures, and other remarks, that candidates will need to repudiate. If Obama survives, he may have to repudiate Tony Rezko by allowing Fox News to burn his house to the ground on national television. Someone might remember that John McCain has warmly embraced religious bigots of his own, and force McCain to subject them to the same tortures he faced as a soldier in order to ensure a perfect karmic balance. And if Clinton gets the nomination, well... let's just say I have it on good authority that she might be connected to a major political figure who was once put through an impeachment trial. Yeah. You may think we're not going to hear all about that sooner or later. But I'd think again if I were you. There's nothing the political media loves so much as the damnation game. In fact, that's probably the root of their beef with Reverend Wright in the first place: when he "damned America," he was muscling in on their turf.

The media hacks will continue to parse each sylable of Obama's speech. This is what they do to get through their alloted time on the air. If they are conservative they will find lots of faults in it and if they are the least bit liberal they will love everything he said. I just resent it so much that all of them think it is their job to convince me of what I should believe. Honestly, I can do without their input. I listened to all the speech and decided all on my own. This is the way of all the networks....of course if you turn to Fox, you know you will be bombarded with hate for Obama and all he stands for. It always amazes me that so called "Christians" can be so full of hate.

Isn't Oprah a member of Reverend Wright's church? If Obama believes racial healing begins with building quality schools in black neighborhoods, shouldn't Obama call on Oprah to support schools in America instead of South Africa?

I believe Oprah left that Church many years ago. A very smart woman is she.And a great American.Apparently she did not feel about America as Obama's wife does.

Maybe she tried to support quality schools....and found out that quailty schools in black neighbor hoods aren't allowed yet...(they might produce too many graduates like Senator Obama)

Sen Obama spoke with dignity and courage about one of the most divisive issues facing this country

It is sad to read some of these posts

You can disagree with Sen Obama's policies, you can vote for whoever you choose, but to twist, denounce, distort what was said today is your loss.

in a speech Sen Obama wrote, that obviously was personal and called on all of us to look at ourselves and to understand others - to unite to solve the larger issues facing society -- it seems many of the posters are stuck on the "loop" -

He took the high road
He did not diplay any anger
He did not pander

There are people on this board who would never say Sen Obama went far enough - there are those who would never vote for a black man

This will show our country is not ready for what we can become - we are doomed to reruns
Progress takes courage -

The words of Sen Obama will resonate beyond this race --

Senator Obama has swiftboated himself. He cannot blame others. This is not a race issue...it is an honesty issue!!! First he didn't know about these awful sermons...then he did know about them. Second, he wasn't present when these sermons were being given....now he says he was present in the pews. Third, Rezko gave one amount of money....now we find he has given much more.

Senator Obama and his advisers are far too intelligent to make such mistakes. This was clever political calculation and a bit of disrespect for the voters of this country. He was hoping that we would not find out. What else is there? He has continued to lie and then give beautiful speeches to distract us.

It's a trust issue!!! Senator Obama cannot be trusted!!! Case closed!!!

I trust the man. Speak for yourself. Of course, I'd be very surprised if you told me you USED to support Obama, but because of this flap, now, suddenly you don't. How 'bout letting a little light in, eh? You support and have supported Hillary, haven't you? So stop pretending all this shock. It's ludicrous.

It seems that some people on this site are content with fighting over petty politics and he said/she said which really has no impact on the bigger issues. Did Barack not warn us in his speech that this would happen?? Do we really want to continue to play "politics as usual" or do we wan to move beyond what a preacher said and get to the foundation of what's really going on?

Many of us (especially white Americans...myself included) have sat under religious teachings for years that were just flat out wrong and I can only imagine what was being said during the slavery and segregation periods in our history. The fact of the matter is that these stereotypes and supremacists ideals still remain ingrained in the heads of many Caucasians today! Did you hear the comments that Pat Buchanan made to Joe Scarborough?? It's disturbing on so many levels and I truly understand where the African American community is coming from considering all that they have been through. If those things had happened to whites we would be an extinct people today!

Bravo Barrack!! Thank you for attempting to shed some light on this very important issue.

Nice speech if you did not spend almost 20 years silently supporting those sermons. But no, he was not running for president at that time, and even after starting running, he never thought that people would be intelligent enough to find his real personality. Obama promised something he can not deliver, and for that I blame him the most. For presenting himself as someone who would unite the country after such a disastrous president, after a non-necessary war, after so many Americans have lost their lives defending a cause not worth it, after so many other Americans are injured for the same reasons. He has used this context to present himself as "the One" who would take us out of the big hole that we are in. Shame on those who have promoted him as the solution for our problems, those who have presented him as someone different. I wonder how Oprah would feel after this, I wonder how many Americans would feel after voting for a ghost, because the Obama that he tried toimpose never existed, it was a fabricated product to get votes. No candidate is perfect, because we as human beings are far from perfect, but to offend the ingenuity of so many people who really believed this man and insult them later on with everything we are discovering is simply intolerable. No more false prophets, the world is full of them. No more lies, no more speeches, we are tired of empty words written by experts and read by empty hearts and brilliant minds. We deserve more. Perhaps 'The One" has not arrived yet and never will, but I will not settle for another lie. Enough is enough !

The hateful and the fearful will always find something objectionable to hang their hates/fears on, no matter the context or content. It makes me wonder what Lincoln's detractors might have dug up, had they the time and the technology we have at our disposal. I'm sure he had some uneducated, but close crazy-assed neighbors who said many crazy-assed things in his hearing, too.

I started out this campaign thinking that Obama wasn't ready yet. Then as I did my candidate research following Iowa, I decided that he was ready now. After the past several weeks, however, I am now convinced that WE are the ones who are not ready.

Pettiness rules. Bullshit rules. Money and sharp elbows rule.

We don't yet deserve a leader with as much integrity and courage as Obama has shown. We deserve the goon du jour.

I agree...anyone that preaches such hatred and dislike for "white americans" is just as quilty as those that preach against "black americans" When will this stop....I do not know about the rest of you but I am sick and tired about the woes of the blacks!! What about all the rest in this world? Look how the Iraq's are suffering! Look at how attempts to terminate the Jews have gone on for centuries!! Every race has its woes and what has happened in the past can not be changed! Now is what is important!! Stop blaming me and mine and everyone else for the past,....none of us was there....then!!! Right! In fact, the Africans themselves sold their own people to the whites and everyone that came to America took over the land that the Indians lived on....what about them?? They to this day have nothing....are worse off then most blacks or white people! No speaks out for them!!! It is time to stop this pettiness and those that want a better life can have it....nothing is handed to anyone....work for it....just like all the other whites, blacks, yellow or whatever skin color you have!! All our DNA is 99.9% the same....thus we are ALL BROTHERS AND SISTERS! I think Hillary will make a fine President and maybe Obama the next time around!

Obama created this issue that wasn''t there 6 months ago. Obamas quest to solidify a monolithic African American vote in the South has come back to sting him and America. The man is dumber than Bush.
Now he wants to lecture the country about race so that he somehow looks presidential when in fact he created the issue during his campaign. Obama is worse than Bush. Shame!

That's why when I repudiate, I use a megaphone. People know I mean business.

I had thought I would be just as happy with either Obama or Hillary as president. Anything is better than McCain .After today's speech on race, I cannot see anyone but Obama as our next president. Unlike everyone else in this race, he gets it and can articulate it. As a white woman in the age group that is supposed to be Hillary's demographic, I have to say that I no longer believe she could lead the country as well as this unique and amazing man.

America loves her mythologies [i.e.] that we're Number 1 in the world, although there's plenty of evidence to the contrary -- that our Founders were all super-ethical dudes, although they seem to have been as flawed in their personal desires and tactical infighting as any other powerful men of this century OR theirs -- that we're always 'right,' 'fair,' and morally superior [Abu Ghraib covers all that.] We've been in the 'mythology breaking business' for a long time, now -- George Bush is just the most egregious and overt myth-buster we've had to deal with. As much as I want to see him in an orange jump suit, he's done us all a favor. He's provided the contradictions that all children must begin to examine if they're to grow up into functioning adults.
Obama's speech today puts him head and shoulders above anybody else in this political dance -- although I was an Edwards supporter and have withheld my support of either Democratic candidate because they are establishment critters, no matter what they promise, Obama lifts the conversation EVERY TIME. We have lived through years of a C- student and our country is collapsing; it's time we found a bright bulb, if we're to make a transition into a 21st century that's still awaiting talent and skill.
The only color I'm interested in is the pink/gray of brain matter -- and sadly, much like Georgie, if the country selects on different criteria, then we will get what we deserve ... and continue the painful business of busting up the mythologies that we embrace without cognizance of reality. I've seen too many tantrums in this campaign, in this new century. It's time to grow up.

Did Obama skip services last Christmas Day because it wouldn't be good for his campaign considering the sermon his mentor and campaign spiritual advisor was going to give? If not, why did Obama miss church on the holiest of Christian holidays? If so, is "guilt by association" incorrect, or unfair? Did he know and decide he could get a platform to speak on racism in this country when it became public? Did he know, and agree to miss services rather than explain to Rev Wright how horrible it would be for him to have to reject his own mentor, pastor, advisor, friend because of it? Remember, it was Rev Wright who Obama went to as the mentor and advisor when he wanted to know if he should run for president. We all know what Rev Wright wants out of this, but I am still wondering what Obama is hoping to achieve.

I completely agree - this goes to so many levels:

I get frustrated because so many people say, "Politicians just say what we want to hear to get elected." But then when a politician says what they know as truth, and some people don't want to hear THAT either, and then they get it from both sides...it's a Catch-22. I respect Barack Obama for denouncing what Pastor Wright said, but I also respect the fact that, whether we agree or not, freedom of speech is part of being an American.

I also agree that the pastor should not be using politics in the pulpit - if we want separation of church and state, it has to go both ways.

Also, why aren't we hearing more about Hillary or McCain and their churches, pastors, etc? Just because they aren't inflammatory doesn't mean that we will all agree with everything THEY say...

I am a white agnostic woman who just wants somebody who has the guts to stand up for what they believe in and speak the truth as they know it...not just what appeases people. That is why I am for Barack Obama.

It would have been better - maybe even "honest" - if Obama had repudiated his minister's inflammatory comments BEFORE they were broadcast in the middle of Obama's presidential campaign.

Coming at this time, it smacks of "dishonesty," or at least opportunism. That is the bed that Obama made for himself - not Clinton, not McCain, not even the rightwing blowhards who are hammering him with his own associations.

There is one group of people who understands Sen. Obama probably better than most -- people of mixed race. I being one, white mother black father. The wonderful thing about being mixed is you are pretty color blind. You understand racists issues from both sides. I've heard whites in my family say some pretty offensive things about people of color and I have heard blacks in my family say some offensive things about white people. But you learn to live among the races in harmony out of necessity, because to dam either is to dam apart of yourself. Sen. Obama doesn't have a racists bone in his body because he knows he is no more white than he is black -- he is an individual -- who has been blessed with an opportunity to build a bridge between our races, who knows when or if we'll ever have this opportunity again.

Has anyone here that is criticizing Obama ever even BEEN to church?

Fathers, Reverends, Pastors, etc say this kind of stuff ALL THE TIME, BUT it's usually aimed at the minorities within america, whether it be gays, blacks, or mexicans. THAT is tolerated.

They tell their parishoners how to vote on referendums CONSTANTLY. It's not as direct as what Obama's minister said, but it is STRONGLY insinuated. They rally around the flag, blame the gays and the liberal lifestyle for all the evils of the world, which is no more right than Obama's minister blaming rich white people for all the evil's of society.

Growing up, our church's father would constantly damn gays to hell, and encourage the parishoners to vote against any "gay rights" referendum. He would say vile, nasty things about gays. Meanwhile, the other priest in our church disagreed with him, but couldn't publicly do so, for that is how the church works.

The rest of the time, when not denouncing the very existence of gays, he was a nice peaceful man.

What the hell would those of you that are condemning Obama have ME do?

Stand up in church and yell at this otherwise well-meaning man?

Walk out and turn my back on my faith?

Am I responsible now for what he said then?

What?

I ask you to answer that question.
