I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Obama

Here's what I know of Barack Obama and the Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Wright is the pastor at a church in Chicago who, at various points in his life, walked into a room and said some pretty objectionable-slash-crazy-ass things about America. Barack Obama may or may not have been in the room at the time when he said these objectionable-slash-crazy-ass things, but he definitely was in the room with Wright at other times, when Wright may or may not have said other objectionable things. It is also apparent that Obama was in the room with Wright at times when Wright said other things, which Obama did not deem objectionable-slash-crazy-ass, but rather hopeful-slash-optimistic, and those things, said at that time, may have formed the backbone of certain principles that inspired Obama's political life. There may have been other people, in other rooms, who said other things to other people, including potentially Barack Obama, some of which may have been objectionable-slash-crazy-ass. Or not.

Got that? It is confusing. But not so much that I cannot empathize. Some years ago I wrote a graduate-school thesis, in which I believe I remarked that the way William Shakespeare manipulated the heartbeat of his iambic pentameter so as to effortlessly reveal his characters' internal states-of-mind was enough to qualify him as an absolute master of the English language, worthy of continued study and critical praise. But, as it turns out, Shakespeare wrote The Merchant of Venice, which includes a brutally anti-Semitic representation of a major character, and The Taming of the Shrew, which hardly takes an enlightened approach in its depiction of women. So, I guess I should renounce, denounce, reject, repudiate, disavow, disown, cast off, scorn, spurn, blackball, and -- ere the cock crows -- deny thrice for good measure, any previous compliment I may have paid a poet who once said things that I didn't agree with one hundred percent of the time. And Thomas Jefferson owned slaves, so he's a racist, and the university he founded which fueled my fascination with Shakespeare should be summarily rejected, denounced, et al., and maybe the country he helped to found, America, should also be renounced, dissed, and perhaps even damned by God, thus bringing us full circle.

All of this should teach all of us an important lesson: before you are born and proceed upon a life filled with both knowing people who stand in rooms and say things, and complimenting other people who stood in other rooms and said other things, you'd better think it all through! Because what's to be done after you've been caught not repudiating things that other people deem repudiatable? Or worse: what if, after you've repudiated those things, other people say that you didn't repudiate them hard enough?

That is essentially the fine pickle in which Barack Obama finds himself -- one that's entirely of his own making. He's made the fatal mistake of assuming that his "words" and his "explanations" and the "character" he's demonstrated through a lifetime of "actions" is sufficient in assuaging the concerns of voters. But he forgot about the need to satisfy the media. And clearly his previous denunciations of Reverend Wright's remarks have not been sufficient. And if you can't satisfy the media, can you really satisfy the voters, who the media will say aren't satisfied? Probably not.

But if I could ask a question of the media figures who are regularly calling for Obama to reject Wright today, who urged Clinton to reject Geraldine Ferraro the day before and who demanded Obama reject Louis Farrakhan earlier last week, it would be this: what would satisfy you? What action could any of these candidates take to settle the matter -- that they have their own ideas and positions and are not some sort of tabula rasa that sponges up only the most mean-minded things the people with whom they have come in contact with have espoused?

If you believe all the racket and clamor, it would seem that this occasion calls for Barack Obama to do something major, something grandiose, something that leaves no doubt at all that his feelings of rejection toward the statements of Reverend Wright are deep and vast and absolute. Maybe he should go so far as to invite Wright to a media event, and then hit him repeatedly with a large stick of some kind! It is possible, however, that even this might not be enough to satisfy some people, and, indeed, the violent acts, while leaving no doubt as to the ferocity of Obama's repudiation, may go too far, and offend others. Instead, Obama will go before the kliegs tomorrow and deliver a "major speech about race" that will likely actually be a "major speech about some crazy stuff a guy said during a sermon at a black church."

There's a good chance that his "major speech about race" will be sufficient, like the time Mitt Romney gave his "major speech about religion" that everyone loved and which solved all of his problems. But there's also a chance that his speech will fail and spell doom for his candidacy, like the time Mitt Romney gave his "major speech about religion" that everyone thought was phony and made the media remember how awesome John McCain was. If Obama fails to address the matter, it could be bad. But if he does address the matter, the results could be equally ungood, only maybe doubleplus so.

In the end, what will it matter? At some point, there will be other figures, and other remarks, that candidates will need to repudiate. If Obama survives, he may have to repudiate Tony Rezko by allowing Fox News to burn his house to the ground on national television. Someone might remember that John McCain has warmly embraced religious bigots of his own, and force McCain to subject them to the same tortures he faced as a soldier in order to ensure a perfect karmic balance. And if Clinton gets the nomination, well... let's just say I have it on good authority that she might be connected to a major political figure who was once put through an impeachment trial. Yeah. You may think we're not going to hear all about that sooner or later. But I'd think again if I were you. There's nothing the political media loves so much as the damnation game. In fact, that's probably the root of their beef with Reverend Wright in the first place: when he "damned America," he was muscling in on their turf.

Here's what I know of Barack Obama and the Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Wright is the pastor at a church in Chicago who, at various points in his life, walked into a room and said some pretty objectiona...

Thanks for exposing the absurdity of this peculiar Zeitgeist in the Press, in which any Democratic candidate is held personally responsible for anything that anyone they ever knew ever said- ever. This includes the Ferraro remarks. Let's get back to a substantive discussion of the issues. Or am I being too optimistic? The longer this nomination battle drags on, the more discouraged I get. And we're only getting started...

COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD WILL SEE WE CAN'T LIVE UP TO WHAT WE PREACH! HILLARY WILL LOSE THE BID FOR THE WHITE HOUSE EVEN IF SHE'S NOMINATED, BACUSE MOST BLACKS WILL NOT VOTE FOR HER BECAUSE SHE DID NOT COME OUT AND DEMONISH FOX NEWS FOR TEARING THIS COUNTRY IN HALF WITH THIER RACIAL AND ETHICNAL DIVIDING AND BIAS REPORTING! SHE CANNOT GET US REPUBLICANS WHO JUMEPED SHIP TO VOTE FOR OBAMA-------SHE WILL NOT GET PEOPLE LIKE ME(RAISSED WHITE TRAILER TRASH WHO'S SEEN THIS KIND OF TRASHING ALL OUR LIFES) . SHE WILL NOT GET THE YOUNG PEOPLES VOTE WHO ARE OUT RAGED OVER THE MEDIA AND CLINTONS MAKEING THIS A RACIAL ISSUE! Say, what are you talking about? It was Obama's Spiritual Mentor playing the race card and going ballistic about the USA, not Clinton.

Wright rants against the USA for quite some time and Obama knew about it. He shot himself in the foot and blaming someone else is a cheap attempt to distract the attention.

Hillary has, if you take the results from Florida and Michigan into account, nearly as much votes as Obama. She is pulling lots of older voters, Catholics, Jews, Asians, Blue Collar workers, women. If nominated, she will pull the majority of the Obama supporters to her camp, because the purpose of the Democrats is not to select a black or a female president, but a democratic one. If Obama disintregrates in the pace he currently integrates, there will be no discussion of a 'stolen election'.

Obama promised to be a uniter, but his top advisor on spirtiual matters is a racist and hateful preacher. This is not the way to heal wounds, this is not the way to change the country. So, if it turns out that Obama was present during one of the fits of his priest, then he clearly lied to the American people and is no longer electable.

so true...the obama opportunity is a chance to look into our collective national soul and see if we are ready to move beyond the crippling paradigm of prejudice. we should all take this opportunity because our country cannot endure endlessly against such internal strife. if we lack the courage to do this now, all together, as americans and not as white americans, or african-americans, or asian-americans, then we will have missed one of our best chances to help america reorient itself towards the future, which starts tomorrow and goes til forever, so think about this really carefully and figure out if you want to be part of the future, part of the solution, or if you want to stand pat with the millstone of the past around your necks.

Why is nobody adressing the fact that Rev. Wright was playing politics as well?

Telling black voters that Hillary is "unacceptable" to lead them and that Bill Clinton didnt "treat them right".

How many other black ministers around the country trashed the Clintons too? (and all LONG before any comments were made in SC)

They accuse the Clinton campaign of trying to marginalize him, but in fact, there was a diliberate attempt to alienate the Clintons from the black community, stricly for political gain.

THAT is what I have a problem with.

Yes, and Wright's dishonest and misleading remarks about the Clintons make you wonder, does Obama, too, believe Bill treated black people as he did Monica Lewinsky? So much for more high-school dropout African American males employed in the Clinton era than ever before in history. I guess that doesn't count.

Obama's strange historical revision of the Clinton era needs to be examined, too. Has he been aware that his spiritual advisor and mentor is using the pulpit to spread fabrications and distortions about his opponent? Is that acceptable? Does he encourage that?

I don't think people need a grandiose show of disapproval. What they need is an explanation that makes sense--how can your spiritual mentor and advisor be a racist nutjob? How does that work exactly? How do you look up to someone spewing hatred and whipping people up into a frenzy over lies about Hillary's privilege (she was raised middle class, as was Obama) and making vulgar comments and movements about her? That's gross and I can't imagine how people are "spiritually" uplifted by such displays.

Exactly. He shoud apologize to the Clintons IMMEDIATELY. That was so wrong. Look at Bill Clintons lifetime of work with the black community, (more blacks in his cabinet than any pres in history) but they are willing to destroy that legacy to pump up their candidate and get a 90% black vote for him (the only reason he is winning. period)

What misleading remarks did Wright make about the Clintons? I am not familiar. I hardily supported Bill Clinton for years but he misled the country and more importantly his wife.

How can our great forefathers be slave owners?.....How can Martin Luther King have been a womanizer? What about JFK and his womanizing.

People that you view as great men and women can have flaws that you overlook. Its not uncommon....the Bible and Quran have whole sections that are overlooked but many hold it as the most sacred thing in there life. You have known your own father and mother your whole life........do you think 100 percent like them? But you have been associated with them for so long???? At what point do people get judged on there own merit?

Lets not be hypocrites. If Obama's association with Rev. Wright makes you uncomfortable thats understandable and your entitled to that. But don't say thing like "OH THE HUMANITY!!! HOW COULD HE!!! There is NO way he could think that highly of him and not support ALL of his views"

People do what Obama did EVERY single day....whether its your semi-racist ,anti-government, anti-religion , pro-aborition , anti abortion, pro gay rights, anti gay rights husband/wife/father/grandmother/uncle/aunt/brother/sister.

Please stop acting like this is a "new horrible" thing. We all do have been in Obama's position to some extent.

Isn't the issue also that Wrights comments are consistent with Michelle Obama's view of America - add to that the fact that this major speech against the war was after Wright blamed the U.S. for the attack - So we are to believe that he will bring us together when his wife speaks out against America - he is just a clever politician - wasn't Fararro correct - Wright said people should not vote for Hillary because she has never been called the "N" word!

Surely you are joking, right? Black churches have welcomed the Clintons for years. Invited them into the arms of the church even during the impeachment scandals! The Clinton's too cute by half veiled race politics is what turned many in the community away from Hillary. Maybe you are easily led around by the nose, but don't put that rap on all people of color. If the right wing hadn't made the lines between church and state so blurred to begin with, we would not even be having this ridiculous discussion. If anyone has used this to political gain it is Hillary and her blue collar, older white women strategy. You are just angry because people of color wouldn't take the bait!

wrong wrong wrong. This "strategy" has been ascribed to her by the idiot media pundits and Obama freaks who think "only onld femninst" vote for clinton.

35% of voters under 29 vote for Clinton. The split the "middle group"

All these "absolutes" are rediculous except ONE. The stupid lopside black vote.

Is this what we are in for EVERY time a black candidate runs? All the blacks will vote based on RACE.

And yeah, that was what Wright and all the other minnister were doing. Trashing the Clinton legacy he EARNED with the black community, so Obama could get them to vote in lock step for him

Great commentary Jason.

The closer our man gets to the nomination the more scrutiny he will get, as Martha Stewart might say this is a good thing, it means we are succeeding as a serious contender.

What is so disconcerting about this witch-hunt for any possible demons surrounding the Obama campaign is the loud incendiary castigation of a black preacher who can relate to the pain and suffering experienced by his flock of parishioners.

The racial bigots on Fox and elsewhere finally found an excuse a justification if you will, to validate their racism by illuminating the “evil” anti American statements this preacher has made.

Now they can effectively use this issue against Obama without having to reveal their innate dislike of black people.

It is pathetic how most Americans are unable or unwilling to relate to the horrific conditions African Americans had to endure for the past three or four hundred years, the way Reverend Wright can.

It is also quite disturbing that we are so intolerant of any criticism of our country even if that condemnation is truly justified.

We are completely intellectually dishonest or plain stupid if we cannot recognize that Napalming innocent civilians or torturing prisoners of war or atrocities like My Lai are un-American and should be denounced.

Ignoring the crimes America has committed is tantamount to ignoring the truth and lying to ourselves, castigating a preacher for speaking out against unnecessary acts of violence that America has participated in is like stoning the newspaper editor for printing the truth.

Bad enough that our guy has to withstand the slings and arrows of his gutter sniping opponent but now he has another obstacle to overcome the Salem Witch Trials.

Good luck Obama we love you.

I agree that there are many things in our past that we should not be proud of. But, just as Obama should be taken at face value for what he says, Fox and the like should be heard and answered, regardless of their obvious bias. They have raised semi-legitimate concerns and Obama is addressing them.

One concern they raise is that Obama's reverend is a racist. Given his statements, it's not an unfair accusation. It's going to hard for Obama to paint an accurate picture of his minister in the eyes of the public. There have been some recent articles and stories that suggest he might be aided by the press, which is now looking a little deeper into Mr. Wright and may well show people that he is not the person the select video clips portray.

Obama claims that he has the "judgement" to be President. I guess this comes from his opposition to the Iraq war that he claims he had from the beginning (even though he was a state senator at the time and was not privy to the same information Congress received). But I wonder where his superior judgement was for the past 20 years when he stood by Rev. Wright through all his anti-American rants. Why is it only now, when pressured by the media and the voting public that Obama denounces this guy? Also, where was Obama's superior judgement when he was snorting coke and smoking weed as he admitted doing? He seems a bit of a hypocrite to claim he has such great judgement now, but failed to show that judgement in the past.

"...past 20 years when he stood by Rev. Wright through all his anti-American rants." So you're extrapolating the 15 second sound-bite that you heard on Fox News for the past few weeks to 20 years worth of hatred for America? Tell me, did you listen to all ~200,000 minutes of Wright's sermons (entire 40 year career's worth), or did you just want to focus on your favorite 15 seconds? Nevermind that Obama has denounced all the statements at issue repeatedly. Be careful, I wouldn't want you to let go of any of that anti-Obama angst of yours.

He had the "judgment" to come out and do this speech today because race needed to be addressed. He is not naive enough to believe that everyone will understand.....he fully expects some to not get it and that's fine, maybe the next generation in your family will get it....

In my view, the problem with the Rev. Wright affair doesn't have anything to do with it devaluing Obama's character or judgment in a way that makes me question if he'll be a good president. I know enough to separate Obama from his pastor. However, it does poke a huge hole in the argument that Obama will be able to attract a significant amount of independent or Republican voters against McCain. One of the major arguments against Hillary is that the right-wing will bring up all of the old 90s scandals against her and that Obama wouldn't have that type of baggage. I think that argument is now null and void. The Republicans will use the Rev. Wright speeches, especially the "god damn America" one, against Obama in the general election and it will turn off a lot of people who simply don't like this type of rhetoric. Democrats will still turn out in force for him, and I still think he can and will beat McCain, but we've got to stop thinking about Obama as being made of Teflon, because he isn't, no matter how much we want him to be.

Voters that vote based on a candidate's pastor (e.g., Huckabee supporters), were never going to support a Democrat. If these voters can get over their ongoing love affair with Mike Huckabee, they will evenetually settle for McCain. Such an outcome is much more likely to happen if Clinton is the opponent.

There's another way to deal with this. Why don't reporters track down Rev.Wright and interview him? Since he is the source of the controversy, wouldn't it make sense to find out what he has to say about all this? For everyone who wants to bury this story, what are you worried about? Does Obama have something to hide? Is he a closet radical? Why not check out what someone like Larry
Elder has to say? Bill Cosby not to your taste? Rev.Wright is a holdover from the 60s. David Horowitz had an interesting look at his own radical past in his book, "Hating Whitey..." (Can't remember the rest of the title.) An honest discussion of race in the last 50years would go a long way towards allowing this country to move forward. Conspiracy mongering does not advance society. Audacity of hope does not equal the man got his boot on my neck. Get real.

Your article is misleading in it's logic. First, Shakespeare and Thomas Jefferson were well before your time. You did not have a personal relationship with either men for 20 years. They did not officiate your marriage, baptize your children, or give you the title of your book. You did not sit in front of these men for 20 years listening to their sermons on Sundays.

The questions people want answered are just how much has Pastor Wright influenced the man Obama has become. What does Obama think in his head and feel in his heart about race, racism, black America, whites, and bigotry? Perhaps his speech today will tell us what we need to know about what's inside this man who wants to be president.

Oh, yes, we are all so worried that Obama, who was raised by his white mother and his white grandparents, is so full of hate for white people! Yes, that is so reasonable. A good rule of thumb is that if you find yourself agreeing with Faux News, it may be time to rethink the issue.

Since you brought it up, I have a question. Do you think that Obama's white mother and white grandparents would have felt comfortable sitting in church listening to Rev Wright's hate filled tirades against America and whites? Would you?

"The questions people want answered are just how much has Pastor Wright influenced the man Obama has become?" How about these questions:

How much have uneducated bigots influenced their children into the adults they have become?
Did racism or racial stereotyping end when congress legislated against it?
Whatever happened to the Confederate States of America? Did their views simply disappear when the Union overthrew their rule? Or did they take their ideas underground, out of the public eye?
How effective has the government been in really trying to get people to stop having racist views when it has been politically convenience to resort to such baiting in the past?
Is true reconciliation actually possible when we preach tolerance, but not understanding, sympathy and acceptance?
If race was such a non issue, why are everyones feathers completely ruffled now that we decide to talk about the subject? Will we as a nation ever be mature enough to talk about it? Or do we simply have to wait for older, racially stigmatized individuals to die before we can hope for the national tenor to change in this regard?

The mirror, I think, goes both ways. The more people look, the more they see themselves. Can anyone face the horror?

Apparently all the Republican-supporting, right-wing wacko ministers (think Falwell, Robertson, Hagee et al) don't hurt their candidates' chances. Guess it's different when they're white! Why are we such hypocrites in this country and why do we still have such double standards?

This is all much ado about nothing.

So, now I see Obama is drifting right.

He now opposes the decriminalization of marijuana, according to TalkLeft. (you know he was for it, before he was against it...)

Guess it is the fallout from Wright?

Just another pol.
