Samantha Power On The Colbert Report

Samantha Power is a Pulitzer Prize winning author and foreign policy expert who specializes in human rights and is a tireless fighter against genocide, but because of this one occasion where she said something impolite about Hillary Clinton to a reporter she can never, ever, ever help America again forever and ever, no matter how often or how well she dates Cass Sunstein, who once did Clinton a solid by opposing her husband's impeachment.

Yeah, things are tough all over for Power, and presumably, fans of genocide-opposition. But the long road back to the bright side began tonight for Power, as she found herself on the Colbert Report. It was quite a coup for Colbert as well - he owned Power's first interview since she got booted from the Obama campaign. To return the favor, Colbert did his best to mitigate Power's misguided remark:

COLBERT: This is your first interview after having left the Obama team because you called Hillary Clinton a monster. True?

POWER: Sadly, yes.

COLBERT: First of all, I think it's a great development for America that members of both teams, Obama and Clinton, are quitting for things that they said about the other side. Eventually there will be no one left to say the things that both sides actually think about each other except the candidates themselves. Then we put them in a sand pit and make them wrestle.

POWER: Each camp has a lot of amazing people left.

COLBERT: Okay. Fantastic. Do you want to clarify what kind of monster while we're here, by the way?

POWER: Can I just clarify and say I don't think Hillary Clinton is a monster and I get to be on television and say that.

COLBERT: There's a way to make it positive. Why not embrace it?

POWER: No, no, no.

COLBERT: What about a good monster like Cookie Monster? And her campaign slogan - I'm helping out here - the campaign slogan could be "C is for Clinton, that's good enough for me." Think about it.

POWER: I need help.

COLBERT: Great. I'm willing to say that John McCain is a minotaur.

I wish Powers would say, no, Hillary is not a monster.

But what Hillary said (about McCain having better commander in chief credentials than Mr. Obama) was certainly monstrous.

Hillary is not a monster but what she said WAS, truly, monstrous.

So let me get this straight. She idolizes a guy who, by her own admission, became too chummy with the serbs [known for their diplomacy] and sees his model as the one we should embrace [oh, yeah, hes dead]? And she was a top foreign policy advisor?

I am still quite confused as to why "monster" is such a horrendous thing to say? I really feel like I've missed something there...

I agreed with the monster comment.

I didn't think monster was offensive enough for her resignation from Obama's campaign. Clinton was doing just about anything in Texas and Ohio to win those primary states. It was monsterous.

The Clintons approach didn't necessarily bother me in the White House. It has bothered me on this campaign. I used to laugh with Clinton's ability to go against reason, logic, and good manners when it came to dealing with the Republican Congress. I delighted in it. Bill Clinton's arguments were not always practical or right then.

Now, I have to eat a chock full of Clinton's opinions. Sure, he was self interested and egotistical, but he was also kind of boyishly loveable. He was wrong but hey he was the first white black president. In SC he was race baiting by appealing to our baser instincts. He was talking about himself instead of his wife.

Enter in Obama, the first half black presidential possibility. He wants to set a new tone. Hopeful? Yes. Dealing with old styled politicians who throw the kitchen sink at him? Hopeful is good but faced with an avenging personality, no.

Powers was one step TOO FAR.

I love her Irish accent. Love it. I'm moving there now. To hell with this toilet paper currency country.

For a "top" foreign policy adviser, she's pretty political naive. If all of Obama's advisers are like her then his administration will be a disaster.

If you had read her book, "Problem from Hell" you would not make the assertion that she is naive. In it, you will find a history of the word "genocide" and how it has been applied (or not, or not soon enough) to extreme violence and humanitarian crises created by violence around the world in the 20th century.

You would have read a rational and deeply researched discussion on the subject of genocide and world politics with a balanced discussion of American politics thrown in.

If having young and brilliant advisors is a recipe for a disastrous administration by your reckoning, one wonders were you have been living for the last eight years.

And you concluded 'naivety' from an interview on the Colbert Report ??

She's promoting her new book, and her career is still unstoppable, she's unbelievably talented

The associations are so symbolic and visual. Young and talented versus worn-out and cynical

Obama - Samantha Power

Clinton - Geraldine Ferraro

Power was scheduled before the big "monster" flap, then cancelled. Good for her for coming on after all.

Her new book sounds fascinating and she is obviously very idealistic.

No wonder Clinton doesn't resonate with her. (Though I was struck by how nice and "we're all in this together with three fine candidates" her tone was. So opposite of Ferraro and other Clinton supporters)

I love Colbert. (And can only hope thatBush will some day understand his amazing remarks at the WHCD).

Samantha Power is boring. She's an imperialist and not even a good one at that. No wonder the imperialist Obama had her on his time. They both believe in "patrolling the commons" an outrageous point of view that should have no place in modern American government foreign policy.

She's the same old, same old, just like Obama.

Maybe Hill is the dreaded Cookie Monster.

She who eschewed baking cookies.

There is something reminiscent of Martha Stewart in Hill. All those clever little ideas. All those policy fixes.

A veritable Cookie Monster of details.

Alas, that's all she is.

She could never have given a speech like Barack gave today.

It is good that she came out to show that she wasn't totally defeated by the mass media attack machine. The Clintons really have a leash on that dog.

He asks Powers if Hillary may be a cookie monster. So funny! Powers is obviously incredibly bright. I hope she finds a place on Obama's team if he gets elected.

She is a key foreign relations adviser for him and has been one of the leading advocate on Darfur in the US for years all while being a great published scholar on foreign policy. I hope she stays and Im sorry but I have no problem saying Clinton is a monster. In context that statement could work it just depends what policies/actions you are talking about. C is for Clinton isnt good enough for me. Im not voting if she is the democratic nominee.

I hope you get to stay home in November. Hitler was a monster. You and other Obama supporters play way too fast and loose with the language, just like Rush and his ilk.

The Colbert Report is always pretty funny..... although I think Cookie Monster was a bit to kind as a description of Hillary.....

It is to bad that people have to resign just for making an off handed remark.... why are people so overly sensitive.... it is getting to the point in this country where you can not say anything without provoking some sort of false outrage.... People need to get a grip and a thicker skin....

You are not always going to hear things that you like, that is the nature of free speech.... but if a majority of people have their way, someday the right of free speech will go away...........
