Conyers: Impeachment If Bush Invades Iran

Speaking on Tuesday, Rep. John Conyers said that serious legal challenges to the Bush administration would not be off the table both before the president left office and after.

The Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee said he would pursue articles of impeachment for the president should he pursue war in Iran without Congress' approval.

"If Bush goes into Iran, he should be impeached," said Conyers. "And we've sent him a letter to that affect."

Conyer's office had not sent a copy of the letter to the Huffington Post at the time of this article's publication.

The line was greeted with heavy applause by attendees at the Take Back America conference, where Conyers spoke. Later in the event, he offered even more read meat for the throng of progressive activists.

Taking questions from an attendee, Conyers offered a strong suggestion that he intends to consider legal action against Bush and Company once they leave office.

"We can win this thing and go get these guys after [they leave office]," he said.

Asked to specify on what grounds he would retroactively go after the Bush administration, Conyers asked, "Have you got a couple hours? I haven't."

As for why he wouldn't pursue articles of impeachment (if he favored them so strongly) before the president's time in the White House came to conclusion, Conyers said he worried that it would become to heavy a political issue during the election season.

"I am afraid they would raise it in the campaign, and that they will use it against us, and that we would end up getting McCain," he said. "I would regret that for the rest of my life," he said. "That's the only reason. That's a chance, I don't know for sure, but that's what I fear might happen."

Conyers's view has been, to be sure, echoed previously by other prominent Democratic figures. Sen. Joseph Biden, for example, said during a presidential debate that he personally told Bush he should be impeached if he takes the country to war with Iran. Biden also, in a Newsweek interview this past summer, suggested that Congress should be "acquiring and accumulating all the data that is appropriate for possibly bringing criminal charges against members of this administration at a later date."

Impeach Bush and Cheney now. It is what the Constitution demands regardless of political considerations. Either we have rule of law or we don't...Im afraid we don't.

Or maybe John Conyers fears that Cheney/Bush will declare martial law if impeachment hearings are set, maybe that is why he wants to wait it out. That could happen. People are holding their breath, waiting to see what sort of trumped up scare they concoct to keep the power in their hands.

Conyers is the most wiretapped man in America now, after Obama.

My goodness, I think the Dems are finally learning how to play politics. Win the WH, a filibuster proof majority in Congress and do what the GOP forgot to during their twelve year run: govern. For the people by the people. Hold the law breakers accountable while pushing through legislation to bring a positive and needed change to our country.

I think we continue to see why so many elected Dems like and mostly favor Obama. A constitutional law expert that can help down ticket Dems win while helping lead the country in getting some real hard work done, without the distractions and exhaustion of fighting over every issue.

Right, what happen to Iraq John Conyers, you talked about impeachment for years, then Pelosi shuts you up , and now you talk about Iran, oh please , you've shown you have no backbone.

Thank you Rob Wexler for having a backbone.

oh yadda, yadda, yadda. jeeze conyers, if years of warrentless wiretapping, a war we were lied about to get us into, signing statements that spit in the eye of congressional authority, torture, the death of habeas corpus, millions of lost emails, and hundreds if not thousands of other political "sins" haven't convinced you yet of the imperitive to impeach *now* then respectfully rep. conyers stfu.
i'm tired of listening to the gasbag rhetoric.

Never mind about impeachment if Dubya invades Iran. It won't happen. He should be dragged out of office RIGHT NOW.

I'm all for impeaching but - are you going to impeach both Bush and Cheney? Are you going to try for Nancy Pelosi, next in line? It's very tricky right now politically. Two thirds of the country want them gone. I believe Vermont has warrants (Vermont, you're awesome). As hard as it is, these elections are eight months away and we are finally FINALLY on the last leg of this horrid time in this great country.

If we are patient, if we are smart, we can deal with this after their terms and we can also review the case of the former AL governor. So much to do. But, Conyers' point is valid. Trying to insure a McCain presidency by invading Iran in the eleventh hour is an extremely extremely large concern. Impeachment would have to be the next issue under those circumstances.

If Conyers knows that Bush and Cheney are engaged in criminal activity, then it is criminal of him to wait it out. for political reasons.
This is the idiocy that has made the senile McCain a plausible candidate in the first place.
Impeachment hearings, issued now, would destroy the Republican Party.

Why wait? Impeach him now!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:55 PM on 03/19/2008

Absolutely. If Bush goes to war with Iran, then Conyers will have THAT on his conscience. Impeachment after an Iran attack would most certainly be a case of far too little, far too late.

It's clear that Bush wants war with Iran and fully intends to pursue such a war, without Congressional involvement, before he leaves office. As the consequences of preemptive, unilateral war with Iran would most likely be disastrous -- at least as disastrous as four years of McCain, if not more so -- Bush must be impeached NOW, BEFORE he can launch such a war!

It would take too long to Impeach George Bush, the Inauguration will have taken place before Congress could even begin to pry the documents out of the Administration with the Supreme Court stacked in GWB's favor.

But...But after the Inauguration the evidence to prosecute GW and Darth Cheny will be readily available.

Think of it as bringing a baby into the world - In 9 months there will be joy. All we need to is wait.

Rep. Conyers is one of the few Democrats in Congress, while a member of the loyal opposition, does not hesitate to do his *job.* But to impeach Bush while in office? I've got one word for ya: Cheney. There is a broad coalition of voters who privately and not-so-privately feel these guys are criminal in their handling of the 'war on terror,' Iraq and the economy, for starters. But first things first. Take America back for its ordinary citizens. Then these cronies will be accountable to Americans, and to history.

Conyers, what sort of bizzaro planet are you from that impeachment is off the table now?

Why in HELL would you want to wait for an invasion of Iran to put in on the table? Don't you care about our country AT ALL?

WTF???

If this is the best we can expect from the Dems, I'm voting for Nader! Democratic politicians, grow one, buy one, whatever, but somehow get yourselves a freaking spine!

I don't know why they haven't impeached them yet. By taking the Oath of Office, Bush swore he would defend and uphold the constitution. He's done nothing but trample it.

In a perfect world, the next president would take office, declare Bush and Cheney and all their cronies as enemy combatants, and ship them off to GitMo. Then close the base down with them left there to rot.

Has Conyers told Pelosi of his new found courage? Pelosi, with her political calculation, has a lot of blood on her hands. I hope we can hold her accountable.

We should ALL heed John Conyers wisdom! He is absolutely RIGHT!

If you think that the thefts of 2000 and 2004 were awful, just wait and see what the complicit MSM and Conservative Radio and TV will do to the National attitude! The Republicans are completely SHAMELESS and will spend any amount of Money as well as the Full Force and Power of CRIME to keep any Democrat out of the White House.

It will be hard enough with Nothing said, much less giving them the tools to defeat us.

Think!! Think!!

John Conyers has been one line of defense against impeachment.

While the treasonous whore Pelosi has been the one to kill any talk or hope of impeachment, Conyers played a different role.

His role was to buy time and suck in the impeachment supporters into believing he was working on their behalf, for their goals. But he was just a big distraction in the game, giving false hope and allowing people to stay on their couches believing he was on the case. We got played by Conyers, by Pelosi and other fake Democrats.

This is more of the same.

It may be too late to Impeach him and Cheney. After all, they have their defenders in Congress and the Media paid off, so no one really wants to tip the boat over now. Unless the little darlings don't get their promised share of the Iraqi OIL revenues. But by then Bush and Cheney will be living off the fat of the land in Paraguay, leaving everyone else holding the bag, and paying the price for their EVIL.

Start impeachment hearings NOW. Even if November arrives before impeachment can happen, start the HEARINGS now. Remember what we learned during the early weeks of the Watergate hearings. Nixon had a taping system in the White House.

Start impeachment hearings NOW. Why? To gather information needed for a trial at a "later date." To scare the shit out of King George and Prince Dick who care NOTHING about the opinions of American, the opinions of Congress, the Hamilton-Baker opinions, the opinions of the Iraqi people. To shine a light on the Bush administration's criminal actions.

Start impeachment hearings NOW. Commander in Chief or Commandant in Chief? Leader of a democracy or Fascist Dictator? Cheerleader or Criminal? Take some power back, Congress. On today's remembrance of the invasion and occupation, please stop calling this illegal action a "war." No war has ever been declared. No war was authorized. YOU never declared a war. YOU never authorized a war. A military invasion to find WMDs was authorized. No WMDs? We're done. Bush and Dick use the word "war" (wait, we're paying the opposition not to attack us so the surge can be successful?) to gain absolute power, to attack or dismiss anyone they consider less patriotic, to strike fear in Americans, to hold American citizens hostage by dumping our hard-earned monies into a foreign shredder, to intimidate and stress our psyches by implying this conflict is inevitable, to purposefully defy the Constitution of the United States.

Do your job, Congress. START IMPEACHMENT HEARINGS NOW.

I agree.Impeachment should start right away on Conyers. He spends all his time trying to take people down instead of doing something for his state where government-democrat is corrupt as can be.They do nothing to help the people. He is a disgrace to this country and I would welcome anything he wants to bring after Bush.Bush will just swat him away just like all the other democratic weaklings.Let the bunker busters fly!

As Colonial82 said, Conyers is one country too late. He's also one justice department too late. He's also one torture regime too late. He's also about a million wire taps too late.
Better late than never I guess, but I'm not holding my breath.

I think it should be remembered that ppl were to quick to impeach clinton for committing one minor offense (pergury), and about a non-issue(sex scandal).

personally, I'm not even sure it was an impeachable offense as a "high crime or misdemeanor".

But seriously, can anyone compare that to the countless impeachable MAJOR crimes and ATTROCITIES of bush???.

Too little, too late, John!

Even if the "votes aren't there" to bring the Bush/Neocon regime to justice now, the effort MUST be made, if only to FORCE him to not invade or attack Iran. If you build it, they will come!

The Bush/Neocon surrogate, Israel, is primed and ready, and armed with AMERICAN made and supplied weapons to start this long-planned attack, to which the Bush criminals can then claim "we must support our ally, Israel", the darling of the Neocon dual citizenship warmongers and pro-Israel at any cost traitors and agents, like those at PNAC, AIPAC, JINSA, AEI, et al. The MSM press/media, our failure "Fourth Estate" , has been co-opted (and bought ) to propaganda and jingoism or ultra-partisanship, and has lost it's commitment to searching out and printing the truth for America....ALL the truth!
