Glenn Beck Watch: Obama Speech Marks Return Of The Sliding Scale

Well, I don't think this is going to shock anyone: CNN's Glenn Beck was not a fan of Barack Obama's speech on race. Not enough repudiatin' of ol' Jeremiah Wright, I'm afraid! True, Obama may have re-condemned Wright's remarks, called Wright's statement and attitudes a "profound mistake," said he "absolutely" disagreed with them, and urged the black community to move past their grievances and "tak[e] full responsibility for own lives," but ask yourself: Did Obama burn Wright in effigy? Did he toilet paper Wright's house? Did he annul his marriage and unbaptize his daughters? Well, then: how can you take his rejection of Wright seriously, when it could have been much, much harder?

As with, say, Pat Buchanan, Obama really never had a shot at satisfying Glenn Beck. But that's not because Obama wasn't firm enough or mean enough. It's because he just wasn't conservative enough. And so Beck continues his recent struggle with intellectual consistency. Luckily for the non-brain dead demographic (none of whom likely had tuned in anyway...) there was someone on hand willing to call Beck out, NPR's John Ridley:

BECK: How do you possibly associate yourself in any way with someone who believes the government invented the AIDS virus to kill African-Americans?

JOHN RIDLEY, NPR/"ESQUIRE": Glenn, I can't defend that comment, and I wouldn't even try to defend that comment. But I don't know that you can make blanket statements about Pastor Wright or about Barack Obama for being there. I mean, look, Ronald Reagan said that AIDS was a judgment from God, and you didn't see Republicans abdicate him.

BECK: Good God almighty, John. You're not throwing -- you're not throwing a 1982 quote at the beginning of the AIDS virus. You're not throwing 1980s quote at me against the quote that has come in, in recent days, in recent times?

RIDLEY: You're asking me, Glenn, if people are going to judge somebody by his statements. So I'm talking about the president of the United States and you're talking about a guy who's still running for the job.

So no, I said, Glenn, I'm not going to defend that statement. I don't believe it. I'm not a person who's going to say "G-D America." But if you're talking about people abdicating individuals on statements, I mean, look, you want a more recent statement? Bill Bennett saying something like, "Do you want to think about how to cut down on crime? Abort all black babies."

Again, I don't think Bill Bennett is a horrible person. I think it's a matter of context.

BECK: It's absolutely unbelievable. It's unbelievable to me that people -- I mean, that quote on Bill Bennett has been used over and over again to destroy him, to destroy the man.

I'm not sure what part of this is less logical: that Reagan's dribbling nonsense is palatable now because two decades have passed, or that Bill Bennett deserves immunity because people have used his own statements to "destroy" him. What's clear is this: hateful rhetoric is fine and dandy, so long as it's uttered by a conservative.

Actually, the statement about Bennett is a canard. He was talking in a larger context about racism. He was not recommending, nor commending, the abortion of black babies. But, that's Liberals for you.

There was once a day when conservatism and conservatives were largely intellectual forces to be reckoned with. Today, conservatism has been hijacked by a bunch of hacks, pure and simple, who have sheep (parrots would be the better metaphor, actually) as followers

And the intellectual conservatives are starting to get fed up with it all.

Everyone should get a hold of the book co-authored by conservative Cal Thomas and liberal Bob Beckel, called *Common Ground: How to Stop the Partisan War That Is Destroying America*.

Beck would be among those they describe as "the bottom feeders" of "political polarizers", which they define as "polarizers who make money by keeping politics inflamed in order to sell books, maintain readership, sustain ratings, fill speaking schedules, or sell tickets."

For Beck's listeners: how's it feel to be taken advantage of like that? Whether you know it or not, you're being taken along for a ride at your and America's expense.

You have the gaul to discuss Barack, when we've had an alcoholic moron for eight years! You don't have enough brain power to go up against Barack Obama. You should be thankful Americans are finally supporting a brilliant man, especially after having a retarded one for eight years. Are you more concerned that the brilliant and artiulate man running for president in half-white? Excuse me, half black?

At what is Obama brilliant? At avoiding policy speeches? About raising taxes to pay for his socialist agenda? About forcing everyone, regardless of need, into government health care?
Obama is a typical empty-suited Socialist. No brilliance there!

Why should I even listen to what Beck has to say. His mind is jacked up from all the drugs and alcohol he's used. Please CNN put someone else who's not so radical in his warped thinking to replace this Kook !

Glenn admited that he was a drug user and an alcoholic. I think because of that, his reasoning power is a little warped. I wish people would get over this damn Reverand Wright thing and move on to more important issues. I noticed that the only people that wants to keep this story going are people like Hannity, Beck,Scarborough and,Buchanon . They are so jealous of Obama. He's achieved something that they will never achieve in their life time. Scarborough and Buchanon failed at politics, and here comes this African American man that's doing what they were not able to do as white men. They're just jealousof him, so they're trying to destroy him anyway way they can. God bless Obama!

If only there were some magic phrases that could destroy the not so much of a man, Beck.

If CNN ever canned him though, Jason, he'd no doubt have a job the next day at Fix snooze.

i haven't paid attention to beck since he called franklin roosevelt "an evil SOB'. for some reason, republicans are trying to demonize FDR. i have a feeling it is another way for them to dismantle social security on behalf of their corporate masters

Explain to me again- why is Glenn Beck on the air? Is CNN going after FOX News viewers? I hope they are getting them because I stopped watching after I heard GB declare WWIII, and realized that he was not joking. Does he have a contract? When does it run out?

Beck is a hack entertainer, and nothing more. He is not an expert on anything, he is not a college graduate (as if that would give him sort of authority on a particular subject). He's a hack radio DJ turned talk radio pundit. He's a Mormon (see his wikipedia page for details) and has been so perverse as to use the personal tragedy in his life for his own gain.

And in one example of his greatness, he described activist Cindy Sheehan as a "pretty big prostitute" and a "tragedy pimp". Is that what they teach in the Mormon church?

Maybe if one of his kids came home in a box from Iraq, he'd feel different.

No, Glenn Beck has a record of cursing on TV. He simply has a smut mouth. Also, he is so partisan that he picks and chooses those that he condemns. He has no moral rudder or he would make the very same comments about Reverand Haggee, McCain's endorsing Preacher who in the past and before his McCain endorsement has unequivocally accused the U S Government of pushing the "Genocide of Blacks". Sounds suspiciously like the Wright comments, eh? But never expect someone like Beck to be fair. He is free to support whichever candidate he chooses, but if he expects me to believe anything he says is credible, he needs to be at least a modicum of even handed.

No sKlfcats, you're the one that's scary. Only brain dead people like you watch Beck, cause you allow him to brainwash you with all his propaganda. There's a reason why Obama's voters are more educated than Hillary's. They actually use their God given brains to decipher the truth from the Bull S....!

No. Beck is not doing anything right, unless you think Joseph Goebbels was doing something right.

beck is a simpleton who can't participate in dialogue. he makes up his puny mind and starts shouting like they all do. noam chomsky's not on tv. david brooks is not on tv. josef stiglitz won a nobel prize and he's not on tv. vs naipaul, nobel winner is not on tv.
and your standard is who's on tv? what a complete fool you are. if you're scared of barack- i don't want you anywhere near me when anything like courage is involved. if you are scared of barack you are a coward like all the right wing. they are scared because they are not brave men. they go from fear to fear.
