Olbermann on Obama: An Audition For President

Huffington Post   |  Rachel Sklar   |   March 19, 2008 08:12 AM

stumble digg reddit del.ico.us news trust mixx.com

Last night on MSNBC's "Countdown," Keith Olbermann examined the politics of Barack Obama's speech on race yesterday in Philadelphia, noting the "political stagecraft" of the placement of eight American flags flanking Obama as he delivered a speech that Olbermann said looked a lot like "an audition" for the presidency: "It looked looked like he was delivering a State of the Union address, right down to the flags." Olbermann's guest, Newsweek's Howard Fineman, had covered the speech and noted that the stage had been carefully set by the Obama team:

It was masterfully put together — it was what they intended, these people in the Obama campaign have a good eye for these things. It was amusing to watch before the speech — I was in the hall — them experiment with exactly how many flags to put behind him.

Olbermann and Fineman also discussed whether the speech would have practical effect politically — not just with people who are already voting for Obama , but for voters he doesn't already have. Fineman wondered if the speech was "too high-minded" for the average voters in Pennsylvania and elsewhere. Fineman noted that Obama's hand had been somewhat forced here, in terms of having to respond to the Wright conflagration, and that he was betting that high-minded was the best response, and one which would resonate with voters. Said Fineman: "If he wins that gamble he will have turned a speech he had to give and that he really didn't want to give, into one that will make history." Watch a clip from the speech and their ensuing analysis below:

Olbermann's comment that the "dirty little secret" of political journalists was that they hope to witness a history-making speech was interesting, given the pre-buildup of the speech as "major" even before the text was released (here are just a few examples of headlines announcing a "major speech" on race as opposed to a "speech" on race: Politico, MSNBC's First Read, Wall St. Journal, The Guardian (from their man in D.C.) . Now there is no question that it was a major speech, but the framing was noticeable.

You far left loons better get a candidate before Johnny gets so far ahead, that you can't catch up If I'm a republican I guess I don't have freedom of speech. You would post the best post I have ever written.

I could just picture these phonies up on the stage figuring out how many flags to put behind Obama.

Obama's speech can only help John McCain. If the far left wants to be President, they better get a candidate, or Jonny is going to be so far ahead the far left will never catch up. Iguess George Soros is going broke trying to help oh! I mean hurt the Democrats.

The "American Flags" backdrop is an old trick that every candidate uses at some point to appear "Presidential". David Letterman joked about that during the 2004 elections; he put plenty of flags behind him to appear "presidential". The concept has even spread to many other countries.

Time after time, we all fall for it. It's a true and tested image that no candidate can do without.

The difference is that when others use the flags behind them they do it out of respect. When Obama did it, it was meant to fool people. No one was fooled Obama. You are finished.

I love Olbermann also. Sean Hannity is another story. He is really sad to me. He makes all that money and is so sad and hateful. I know that he has to act that way to stay of Fox but he is pitiful. Greta on Fox is also sad but she has to do her job. With yesterday entering into the 6 year in Iraq and all they could talk about was Rev. Wright. How many people died under his leadership? The worse part is that the poor and middle class people that listen to the stations raciest rants on Fox don't realize that all they want to do is divide us. See Hannity is a millionaire he will be able to pay his bills. You can NOT vote because of something a Pastor said, you can vote for Hillary just so that you don't have to vote for a man that went to a certain church, but you know that you can trust him more than her. But remember you will still have bills that you can't pay, houses you can't keep and a War that can last forever. And Parent"s you know that if this war goes on they will have to bring back the draft. Please vote your own interest and don't let rich people like Fox News cause you to have to change your next voter's registration address to the homeless shelter. /

God Bless Us All

Sean Hannity is a great American, and like I said before if you far left loons don't soon git a candidate, Johnny is going to be so far ahead you'll never catch him. Better Get Ms. Huffington and George Soros and come to the front with some mor tanted money, and get you a candidate before the dem. covention, or we will have another Republican President, thank goodness.

RE: Fineman wondered if the speech was "too high-minded" for the average voters in Pennsylvania and elsewhere.

Yea Howie...NOBODY is as intelligent as you are. Please, please tell us who to vote for, and then tell us what to eat, when to eat it and when to go to the bathroom...because those topics are all "too high-minded" for average voters. What a tool Howard Fineman is...and the perfect guest for Keith Olberrant.

The people he's talking about aren't here, or listening to the whole speech - he's referring to the ones who fall for "the call at 3AM ad", who accept the hologram of "35 years of experience" ....

If the electorate was informed and intelligent, would we have had 2 Bush terms? (Or 2 Clinton terms, for that matter).

From now on, my best friends must vote for Obama. Otherwise, I will demote them and they can move down the couch. Since my wife likes Hillary, I shall go bar-hopping with Elliot Spitzer this weekend. Just kidding- my wife too is now an Obama fan.

He's way qualified now. Can you imagine the possibilities as he grows into the job?!

Politician, like lawyer- doesn't have to be a dirty word.

One problem is the entire baby-boomer generation is so fundamentally disillusioned. This divisive politics is largely theirs and it is all they know and care about. They don't realize that the rest of us don't give a damn about their beefs over Vietnam and we want actual statesmen like Obama to lead the country, not dirty politicians that represent their era's politics. Move aside old-timers, the next generation is taking over and cleaning up your mess.

Don't generalize. I'll be 61, USMC Viet vet, and I am sick of the political football between dems and reps.

Hillary is same-old.

I am 100% for Obama. To me, if Hillary steals/lies her way to the nomination, I might vote for McCain - I hope I don't have to face yet another choice of lesser of 2 evils.

When you grow up, you'll understand why the lessons of Vietnam are still relevant, and why some of us, especially those of us who lost someone we loved like I did, still do give a damn. As for your belief that the next generation will clean up the mess, something else you may not know is that the younger generation historically are the least likely to actually show up and vote. I won't be moving aside. I'll be voting for Senator Obama, and I hope that this time you and your peers will put your money where your mouths are.

Watch and learn how big a crime it is in the Black community to have a white mother. The feminist you should read about his mother she will make you all proud.

The great thing about being of mixed race ( I am mixed) is you are pretty much color blind. However, it is not easy living in the two worlds. Black people have their issues with you as do whites. You get to hear racist comments from both sides. It's a balancing act, you certainly become more tolerant of people and less judgmental. Sen. Obama is allot stronger than people give him credit for in my opinion.

KEITH & CHRIS
You've got lot of courage and gut to speak up your mind and tell as it is. I simply love your SHOW.
It's OK if Chris bring in Buchanan and he should know that Buchanan Brigades are for OBAMA!
Bay Buchanan was gracious and applausible when she gave her sincere and honest opinion without any malice that OBAMA gave a spectacular eloquence and he was right.

CNN got low getting rating for Blitzer a pro-Clinton who got overtones and over statements against Obama. Just looking his face we can tell who are in his show. Two Republican and himself as Clinton attacking Obama. CNN had been showing over and over Obama and his Pastor Wright......

I am sick and tired........

THIS MESSAGE FOR MEDIA and hate mongers: If your Mother had been a public Client # 1 or Prostitute => would you stop acknowledging the world that she is NOT your mother????

Common All the Critics ....Rushbo, Blitzer, Hannity, Buchanan....etc.: Never!!!! She still be their Mother..

IF Wright is a good Pastor and often got out of line and became an ANTI-AMERICAN but his sheep is not going to ignore him or hate him, often condoned ...after all he always will be their Pastor!

At age 20 when Obama joined Pastor Wright's Church, I don't believe at that age I am going to the Pastor and confront him and if does he would have been thrown out!

We all go to Church and many who are his critics they have No Church or are agnostics! and God knows what kind of Pastor they've got in their community!

We go to Church to pray to God and often amused with all kind of shows that a Pastor is putting out..

Though Pasot Wright's video clips and bytes are anti-patriotism but perhaps many felt as an entertainment and that's how CNN is entertaining us 24/7 with Ms. Campbel, Blitzer, Anderson and who elso!

Chris Mathew, Obermann you have my salute for your SHOW! KEEP UP YOUR GOOD WORK.
NO brainers don't agree with you and that's OK

OBAMA '08

The press called in "major" ahead.

As usual they build him up, to tear him down. (I will never forget Blitzer's completely irrelevant, "preemptive strike" comment). David Gergen's the only commentator without an axe to grind (and who also seemed to "get" the idea that harping on Rev. Wright's speech 100 xs a day (1) ignores real issues and (2) just creates another toxic election with unsatisfactory results).

Blitzer's got some good people on (NOT Crowley). But he's still a tool (and she's a rightwing shill).
