More than 7 out of 10 Americans think government spending on the war in Iraq is partly responsible for the economic troubles in the United States, according to results of a recent poll.

In the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll conducted last weekend, 71 percent said they think U.S. spending in Iraq is a reason for the nation's poor economy. Twenty-eight percent said they didn't think so.

I'm amazed at how this monkey has succeeded in "dumbing down" this country. OF COURSE we're losing our asses because we're over there.

Stopping the war wont save the economy right away, but if we allow a coalition of surrounding countries and other countries including from the EU that would jump to make the money that Bush and Cheney have greedily kept to Halliburton alone since the beginning, to come in and help rebuild Iraq, then oil will flow a lot sooner and the price will come down. This is what needs to happen anyway, so we can get our troops out.
Anyone with half a brain knows that jihad will end when Iraqis can see that America has relaxed her stranglehold grip on their country and intend to truly leave. Some incidents will still occur, but it will not be jihad. For the most part, peace would return.
Oil cannot break out like it can and needs to because the US has to wait to save face by being able to call it a victory, then it can let the oil loose under ownership of Exxon or Shell. Then maybe- if we're lucky.- They MIGHT let prices go down again, since there will be a lot more supply out there.

It's a double vice. While we all wait for this to happen, the oil companies are making out like bandits because the price of the black stuff has gone up so high, since stopping the flow from Iraq makes it more scarce. They couldn't have dreamed a better situation.

If McCain was to come out and say that if he wins he will work to lower Gas prices, he would be way up front, because this is what is ruining our economy and making life tougher.
But he can't and he won't, because that would pit him against the oil companies that have their storybook romance with history all sewn up, thanks to W. This is also where McCain is showing that he has no balls. At least not enough to be our Pres.

This is why Dems should go ahead and have the balls to say that they will work to lower gas prices, get elected, and follow the course to make that oil available quick. They'll win the election in spite of those corporate bastards, and Exxon will have to be satisfied with screwing us up the yang only during W's reign.

Then, like an onion peeling off layers in a bar b-q pit, Americans will begin to see how they have been taken by this criminal. It will become more and more clear that had he gone into Iraq with the rest of the world from the beginning, and allowed the other countries to have the lucrative contracts that Cheney kept for Halliburton alone, it's very realistic to see that thousands of our brave soldiers would not have needed to be killed, or wounded. Our economy did not need to tank. Jihad was designated against the American Empire this coward never had the balls to call an occupation. They would not have fought the whole world.

This country will not stay so ignorant forever. His rating has a long way lower to go yet.

Don't forget Bush/Cheney want to squarely place the blame for the popolace failure to continue to embrace the war on liberals and the media. We must debunk the lie that it's media and liberals that
are responsible for the whole Country being demoralized and losing it's nerve. The war-mongers lost the Country based on the expectations set by themselves:

- 400,000 tropps needed for stability: can Shinseki

- War will cost at least $200 Billion: can Lindsey

- Rumsfeld on how long will it last: "6 days, maybe 6 weeks, I doubt 6 months"

- Missioned Accomplished

- Last throes

- Turning the corner when Saddam is caught

- Turning the corner when elections are held

- Turning the corner when __________

And so many more outrageous lies that set the (false) expectations that are coming home to roost. These false expectations were not set by the media or by liberals - they were set by a deceiving Administration at the short-term cost of tens of thousands of lives destroyed and Trillions of US$. Unfortunately the long-term costs (in lost World standing, future terrorism, and general US weakness in the World) are going to be much worse for generations to come.

It appears that approximately 30% of the population is always wrong about everything, which means that they can effectively be factored out of the equation as an unchanging constant and summarily ignored - in other words 70% is the new 100%.

Agreed. In fact, I do believe this must be the same 30% who still think Bush is doing a good job as President. It's scary, isn't it, to think that approximately one out of every three people you meet on the street is most likely insane?

58% also say the USA is in a recession, when we are not. You need 2 consecutive months of zero growth to make a recession. Ain't happening. The unemployment rate is under 5%.

wrong!

"In macroeconomics, a recession is a decline in a country's gross domestic product (GDP), or negative real economic growth, for two or more successive quarters of a year.

In US, the judgment of the business-cycle dating committee of the National Bureau of Economic Research regarding the exact dating of recessions is generally accepted. The NBER has a more general framework for judging recessions:

recession is a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales. A recession begins just after the economy reaches a peak of activity and ends as the economy reaches its trough. Between trough and peak, the economy is in an expansion. Expansion is the normal state of the economy; most recessions are brief and they have been rare in recent decades.[1]

1) That's a government definition and you never find out till months later.

2) It's two consecutive QUARTERS!

3) Wage growth has been flat for the last 7 years

4) Unemployment rates merely measure the number of people who are looking for work; not those that have given up or taken low wage jobs.

5) Wal Mart is doing well.

And there is Nominee McCain admiting he doesn't know anything, or even understand the economy - I presume that the 30% worked for Bear Stearns (or other investment house) - and they aren't doing badly, are they.

The other 30% coincides with the percentage of votes McCain will garner in November.

So wait a minute; let me see if I have this: The Bush administration was wrong in 2003 when they said that their war against the people of Iraq was only going to cost $1.6 billion, tops? Imagine my surprise!

How could the Iraq war not have hurt the economy? Generating 600 billion dollars worth of additional debt certainly isn't going to help the economy.
