More than 7 out of 10 Americans think government spending on the war in Iraq is partly responsible for the economic troubles in the United States, according to results of a recent poll.

In the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll conducted last weekend, 71 percent said they think U.S. spending in Iraq is a reason for the nation's poor economy. Twenty-eight percent said they didn't think so.

War spending helps the economy for no more than six years - or some segments in the economy. After that, there is detriment. Bush is a big gambler. He wants to double down for the oil. So long as 30% support him, he can maintain control. That would be 3% wealthy people (tax cuts and deregulation and war-profiteering) and 27% who believe that they are "religious." The latter are "faith-based" - they don't bother with "evidence." Since Bush was in office there are worse family values. It takes money to raise a family and jobs are worse and homes are being foreclosed. Gays are still out there, especially in the GOP. Abortion is still legal. Millions have died and we are less safe.

I understand the 3% but what are the others thinking?

If there is a God, why would he support corruption in government? Killing millions? Lying?

Nah it was yours and mine and it was used to sweeten the deal for the war profiteers, you know the Military industrial complex that has made off like bandits in this dirty little police action that Bush et al have cooked up.

Try more like 1.2 TRILLION.

And this was never even included in our budget. It was always titled "emergency spending."

I would argue the Iraq War IS our economy ...

What viable industries does the US have left? Our major export is War.

The economy is hemoraging. Iraq is the cause of all the blood lost. In more ways than one.

Why does our president continue to talk?
The 30% of americans who believe in his lies and retoric will continue until they pass through the gates of hell.
The rest of us know him for what he is.
A liar.

The war in Iraq is only harming my generation who will pay off this enormous debt that YOU, the older voter who collectively cosigned for a second time in 2004. The BANKS have drained this economy under Bush's economic policy of those with money can swindle their way to even more money. You also collectively voted for this in 2000 and 2004.

A word from the under 30 vote, let us handle things this time. Instead of us arguing over color or class we would like to focus our attentions on this debt that YOU are passing along to us and the division that YOU allow to fester into this millennium.

And although thoroughly proven there was no link between hussein and "al-qaida," the most amazing thing is that al-qaida never actually existed-

***The Power of Nightmares***
Top CIA officials openly admit, Al-qaeda is a total and complete fabrication, never having existed at any time.

heres the link with the smoking gun video featuring cia operatives laying out the plan to create an ongoing worldwide menace-

http://polidics.com/cia/top-ranking-cia-operatives-admit-al-qaeda-is-a-complete-fabrication.html
just click the video that opens on that page-

and the original bbc story http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/3755686.stm (from 2005!)

this alone should get all the douchebags in the bush cartel not only ousted but tried and executed for crimes against humanity-

What's McCain's plan for the economy?

Oh yeah, that's right, we aren't allowed to have one because all our cash is in Dubai. (come on people think here, where's Haliburton now based?)

I've been thinking about calling my neighborhood by some Persian name and then asking for the American military to invade and bring LOT's of cash. I'll share with anyone who wants to move in. There are at least three houses vacant on my block. One foreclosure, one death and one moved out.

You hit on an important point here. When was the last time our purported elected government cared what American think or want? Those leader living inside the Beltway know what is best for us and we should simply suck up whatever they shove our way and let them get on with governing. At some point, voters may get tired of this attitude but from what I have seen they aren't quite there yet. The November election will tell the story I think.

The whole republic is nothing more than a corporation with a "face" in our current President. He's a masochist and laughs at your pain. More precisely, he's a DICK. The same people that bring you clever shit to watch on TV dried him out long enough to prompt him with a few lines and then surrounded him with sycophants. The executive branch is more akin to a corporate boardroom than a checked, equal branch of government.

Ted Rall, in his most recent OpEd, says, "If Americans were represented by an animal, it wouldn't be an eagle. It would be a tiny shrew, nervous and paranoid and living in constant terror of being attacked by predators."

There is a whole lot of bad medicine for this country to swallow, but when enough of us come to our senses and quit drinking the Kool Aid, we'll realize our ancestors had it right from the beginning: DON'T TREAD ON ME.

As I watched news about this tonight I realized they ask citizens in a poll..."do you think the war hurts the economy?". Then the results are spewed all over the web. But most citizens have no facts as to how and if it does affect the economy. I like many others would assume it does because it takes funds away from other causes but does it really affect the "economy". Meaning industrial production, etc. I would like to see experts like economists and those with GDP experience to comment.
Many times these "polls" are public opinion but not based on actual facts. A dangerous way to have debate about issues.

"when has the opinion of the majority of Americans ever mattered"

When The Founding Fathers believed they had transformed their visionary understanding into a newly created republic of We The People. Vast numbers of the nation's citizens have not fared too well, however, since the age of super-capitalism began.

The warning message from Benjamin Franklin to the throng outside the State House in 1787, that we had "A Republic - if you can keep it!" was more a prophecy, as it turns out. That Republic of their creation, a political order in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who are entitled to vote for officers and representatives responsible to THEM, has too long been controlled by the Military Industrial Complex and its purchased minions. Citizens come in handy, however...we foot the bills.
