More than 7 out of 10 Americans think government spending on the war in Iraq is partly responsible for the economic troubles in the United States, according to results of a recent poll.

In the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll conducted last weekend, 71 percent said they think U.S. spending in Iraq is a reason for the nation's poor economy. Twenty-eight percent said they didn't think so.

No, that's the .03% you're thinking about - the other 30% are the ones looking fondly back 6,000 years - better times when God created the Earth.

No shit, I would have never guessed. Spending trillions on another country and all the while this country is sliding toward the spinning toilet bowl. Thanks W and all of you neocons with help from the dems. You embody the Republican party and what is wrong with this system of lobbying. As long as you get rich inside the beltway and the MIC and Big Oil are satisfied then all is right in your world.

It is amazing that it is always 30% of the people who are mindless followers.

One out of three amongst us is basically a dullard.

The Illegal War and Unlawful occupation is a HUGE money maker for oil and war profiteers. Scarcity and Death are what we taxpayers are now funding ... in order to make a very priveledged few vast fortunes.

Death has now become a major export. Death IF you have oil that is.

And as Hell rages on for Iraq and Hopelessness and Fear is sold wholesale to our nation, Bush soft shoes and tap dances for the photographers.

What are the other 30% thinking?

When trillions of dollars are being sucked out of the economy with no useful return, how can this not hurt the economy?

Further, there are also the lost opportunity costs.

For example, what will be the long-term impact and effect of allocating $3 trillion or more to the war in Iraq and not spending these resources on maintaining infrastructure at home? How do you maintain a competitive economy without functional roads, bridges, buildings, water, sewage, electricity, etc.?

What will be the impact of the economic drag of the higher taxes that will ultimately be necessary to pay down war debt, as the U.S. tries to compete with nations that do not have the economic burden of massive war debt?

The war in Afghanistan sunk the U.S.S.R.

Unless we correct course, the war in Iraq will tragically sink the U.S.

Even if the 30 percenters are not willing to acknowledge reality, reality doesn't go away.

It's about to be morning in America again, but this time, it's not the cheery morning Reagon envisioned.

It's the morning after, and we are totally screwed by a government that was too busy helping themselves and their wealthy contributors to our money to be concerned with the long-term interests of the People to whom this Nation and government actually belong.

The American People either take back their Nation or lose it.

See you in November, but don't wait till November. Get your own house in order financially, etc., and then take back your own government, local, state, and federal, one step and one day at a time.

I don't know about the other 300 million of you, but I have absolutely no intention of going down quietly into the 3rd world hell in which our current government is sinking us.

I have made a commitment, every day, to do something, whatever I can do, to end this disaster in Iraq, and to reinstate the Rule of Law and fiscal responsibility in or government.

If the last 7 years teach us anything it's this: Good government matters; bad government leads to disaster.

The American Dream is to leave your children and grandchildren better off than you were, and I will do that or die trying.

And if a few 100 million of you do the same, problem solved.

Blah Blah Blah with these poll numbers already. No one really seems to care. it's obvious that no one cares because they simply refuse to anything about it. No protests, no backlash. Just people nodding their heads in agreement. War is bad.

Bush has driven this country in to the ground. And with everyone asleep at the wheel it won't get any better.

Of course no one cares, why should they? If it does not affect their lives, or interrupt prime time television, they don't notice.

Sorry, SC, but there have been massive protests all over this country and others. You won't see it on TV, nor the print media dailies, because they are all owned by the corprate overlords...

I realize that there are and have been protests. Come on Boston has them all the time on Boston Commons. But the problem is they have little numbers. And they rarely accomplish anything. And my point is that there is far too many people living day to day and are stuck. They got to pay the bills that they can't afford. It's an endless loop for them No time for protest got to go to work at my 3 jobs to pay off this war. And then Britney Spears and garbage like that makes us all forget that there is actual important things going on in the world.

We waste our time fighting for stupid laws like smoking in bars versus lobbying to our local leaders and government to do something about our situations that matter to our lives. Most people don't even know who their locally elected officials are.

The funds for the Iraq War come from the Federal Reserve and they add it to the National Debt!!

It is the $ 20 BILLION in INTEREST PAYMENTS we have to make each months that kills us.

Yep.

Let's take a few samples here.

* Transportation

* Education

* Infrastructure

* Health Care

WE. ARE. IDIOTS. Made that way by thugs in the car, oil, energy, telecom, pharma, health care, manufacturing, retail, religionist, entertainment military-industrialist, big iron, and other corporate-managed economic "wonders".

And we are in for what we deserve for letting the Neocons, Theocons, and Neo-Fascists get away with murder.

Ugh.

Transportation - We SHOULD be developing a hefty PUBLIC TRANSPORT solution to both high gas prices and global warming. Instead, many city transit rail systems are limping with 25 year old equipment and infrastructure. Not to mention that intercity bullet trains are a distant dream. Not to mention that light rail, which was destroyed by Detroit and Dallas muckity-mucks, is nowhere soon on the horizon. We don't even have solid strategies for bike communting or walking to corporate campuses from rail and bus heads. The rest of the industrial world is light years ahead of us.

Education - Many countries fund education. We make education fund itself. Further, we have crippled education with poor pay, poor benefits and a laughable system of testing for progress. We are now lagging behind developing countries' educational systems. Our public school systems cannot afford books much less to renew their 75 year old school buildings. Only the prestigious schools are competing with foreign higher education, but our own citizens cannot afford the high tuitions.

Infrastructure - Aside from transportation and public school buildings, just look up when you pass underneath a bridge. Think of all the water supply and waste water piping that is 75 years old and more. Consider that what keeps us back in the 21st century is having to be backwards compatible with 19th century building standards. Not to mention the millions of homes not ready for solar, wind or other energy conservation. Our very infrastructure will prevent us from realizing the benefits of 21st century energy production. No one can invest in new infrastructure because they are afraid of the extreme possibilities of a single bombing raid on Tehran.

Health Care - Health or feeding our kids? Take your pick. I don't even want to have to argue with some corporate slug who thinks life is beautiful on the corporate campus. You all need to step into somebody's shoes in the depths of winter in Chicago, Detroit, Phillie, Baltimore, or New York who is struggling with Wal*Mart pay and no health care.

Sorry for the replies, but I think I needed to get out the details on this. We are sorely in need of a reality check about the health of this country in comparison to others.

Ugh.

Economics Noble Prize Winner Stiglitz says:

"The Iraq adventure has seriously weakened the U.S. economy, whose woes now go far beyond loose mortgage lending. You can't spend $3 trillion -- yes, $3 trillion -- on a failed war abroad and not feel the pain at home."

$3 trillion works out to $10,000 for every man, woman and child in America.

It's more than curious. We're expected to believe that John McCain leads Obama in the polls today buy roughly a couple percent. Yet we also know by this week's polls that 64% of Americans oppose the war in Iraq and, by this headline that 70% of Americans consider the costs too high and rightly hurts the economy.

???

Given McCains view of the Iraq war, these points are irreconcilable. Which can only mean that, as in the past with political polls, a huge segment of the public is not being polled at all - very likely the swelling of new registrars that have been flocking to Obama caucuses across the country. Political polls, for the most part, only poll people with a history of voting.
