WASHINGTON — Protesters blocked traffic and government buildings in Washington, acted out a Baghdad street scene in Syracuse, N.Y., and banged drums in a parade through San Francisco on Wednesday to mark the fifth anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

In other, more somber observances, organizers set up a 2-mile display of about 4,000 T-shirts in Cincinnati, meant to symbolize the members of the U.S. military killed in Iraq, while in Louisville, Ky., demonstrators lined rows of military boots, sandals and children's tennis shoes on the steps of a courthouse.

Laurie Wolberton of Louisville, Ky., whose son just finished an Army tour of duty in Iraq, said she fears the worsening U.S. economy has caused Americans to forget about the war.

"We're not paying attention anymore," she said. "My son has buried his friends. He's given eulogies, he's had to go through things no one should have to go through, and over here they've forgotten. They just go shopping instead."

On previous anniversaries, tens of thousands of people marched through major U.S. cities, and more than 100,000 gathered on several occasions leading up to the invasion.

Only a few hundred mustered for one of Wednesday's largest gatherings, in Washington, the crowds' size perhaps kept in check by a late-winter storm system that stretched the length of the country.

Dozens of people were arrested, most of them at demonstrations in San Francisco, Washington and Syracuse.

At the Internal Revenue Service building in the nation's capital, about 100 protesters led by a marching band gathered at the main entrance. Several jumped barricades and sat down in front of the doors and were immediately detained. The demonstrators said they were focusing on the IRS, among other institutions, because it gathers taxes used to fund the war.

Story continues below

Brian Bickett, 29, was among the first arrested. The high school theater teacher from New York City said he had never engaged in civil disobedience before.

"We need to find lots of different ways to resist the war, and I decided to try this," he said.

About 20 protesters were arrested about a block from the U.S. Capitol after blocking traffic. In some cases, police had to drag the protesters off the street.

In Syracuse, police arrested 20 protesters who blocked traffic by creating a mock Baghdad street scene. One person dressed in camouflage lay on the ground. Another was covered in a white sheet with red markings and a woman leaned over as if grieving. They were from a group of more than 100 demonstrators who marched downtown in a steady rain over the lunch hour.

In Chicopee, Mass., eight people were arrested when they blocked a gate at Westover Air Reserve Base, police said. Five people were arrested In Hartford, Conn., for blocking the front door of a federal courthouse.

On the West Coast, San Francisco police arrested about 100 protesters by early afternoon for blocking traffic and chaining themselves to buildings, police said.

The rallies, which drew hundreds to the city's busy financial district, were mostly peaceful, though some demonstrators threw glass Christmas ornaments filled with paint at police, said Sgt. Steve Mannina, a San Francisco police spokesman.

Black balloons were tied to trees along San Francisco's main downtown thoroughfare, and protesters at a table offered coffee, oranges and "unhappy birthday cake" to passers-by.

A few hundred protesters banging drums and waving banners that read "Was it worth it" took to the streets for a parade that blocked morning traffic.

In Anchorage, Alaska, vandals dumped a gallon of red paint on a war veterans memorial, police spokesman Lt. Paul Honeman said.

Demonstrators also converged in Ohio, where more than 20 vigils, rallies, marches and other events were planned.

In New York City, women sang songs and counted out the war dead outside the military recruiting station in Times Square, which was recently the target of a bomb.

Half a dozen war protesters in Miami dressed in black placed flowers outside the U.S. Southern Command during rush-hour Wednesday morning.

Outside a military recruitment office in Washington, protesters were met by a handful of counterdemonstrators, one of several shows of support for the war and the troops.

Colby Dillard, who held a sign reading, "We support our brave military and their just mission," pointed to some red paint that one of the war protesters had splattered on the sidewalk.

"The same blood was spilled to give you the right to do what you're doing," said Dillard, who said he served in Iraq in 2003.

Earlier, about 150 people, mostly with the group Veterans for Peace, marched down Independence Avenue. Many of them carried upside-down American flags, which they said symbolized a nation in distress.

Daniel Black, who was stationed in Fallujah with the Marines in 2004, said he came to believe the war was a mistake after he returned.

"The more I read the more it just didn't add up," said the 25-year-old, a student at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

A couple of miles away at the American Petroleum Institute, protesters chanted "No blood for oil!" and tried to block traffic by sitting in the street and linking arms. At least once, they were dragged away by police.

Vandals in Milwaukee damaged the front door of an Army recruiting center and spray-painted anti-war graffiti across its front windows. Milwaukee police said the vandalism occurred Monday night or Tuesday.

The Iraq war has been unpopular both abroad and in the United States, although an Associated Press-Ipsos poll in December showed that growing numbers think the U.S. is making progress and will eventually be able to claim some success in Iraq.

It's a "turkey shoot," not a war

If just 4,000 troops/mercenaries die for every million Iraqis they kill, one occupier accounts for 250 dead Iraqis. In other words, this is not a "war" in which two "sides" are somewhat evenly matched. It's more like a much larger version of the infamous 1991 "turkey shoot," when the invaders, safe inside their planes and helicopters, slaughtered tens of thousands of Iraqi soldiers and civilians on the road to Baghdad.

We haven't forgotten Iraq; it's metastasized into unemployment, corporate greed, corruption, the White House free riders with a total disregard for the public good... all of which affect the economy.

The two are inextricably bound.

I actually heard on Olberman that Iraq is not a Major Issue Now- only a few protestors were gathered in DC. Who dropped him on his head- WE Know Iraq is a major issue, since most our other problems have been compounded by it's continuation. Many of US knew it was NOT going to go as the Lobbists in theWhite house kept spewing. Hell I knew it was bad when our troops hit the ground in Afghanistan. Cultures who carry on grudges for millenia are not easily detered- in fact the word Tenacious comes to mind.
Not only do we have some media whore telling US it's not really an issue any longer in the campaign- We have a GOD DAMN VP Who says "SO" when confronted with the fact that 2/3 want US OUT!!! I'll take that as a Confession to Treason, an act agaisnt Our Democratic Society- S.O.B WORKS FOR US!
I want Dick on Trial far more than I want Binny at this point, considering it's his ASSociates who brought th eacts of 9/11 down on our citizens by their Unethical and Immoral Business Practices Aroudn the World. They have wipe dtheir Asses with our Flag, Our Reputation, Our Economy, Our Consitituion and The Bill Of Rights, and have been th ecause of blood shed throughout the World. Cheney Must be Indicted on Treason,War Crimes an dCrimes against Humanity!! 'SO"!?!?!

It took a lot of Americans protesting to end the WAR in Iraq, but the Politicians didn't get the message until we voted all of em out. Oh, and tricky dick was caught up with watergate.
I read where Cheney doesn't really care what the public thinks, I highly doubt Bush and McBush do either. That's why it's so important for people to call, write, etc., and tell them 100 years, NO.

I went to a war protest last Saturday.

PEACE NOW!.....FASCISM NEVER!

I have carried my sign many times

but most people are just too busy.

RIGHT ON with the protests.. they happen ever year during this week. Waitaminute you are absolutely right about getting the word out. There are MANY people that would stand or march if they knew when and where.
Veterans for Peace organized several this week. I found out about all of the peace stuff in my town on Flickr of all places!! We have weekly protests all year on street corners and they grow each week. As soon as Bush is out of office, many people that are afraid will come out, too.

Go to Flickr.com and do a "peace" search ...there are several groups including one that is gathering a million peace pictures. there are many pictures of protests with hundreds and hundreds of participants.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrat Barack Obama's big national lead over Hillary Clinton has all but evaporated in the U.S. presidential race, and both Democrats trail Republican John McCain, according a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.

All of the attention has turned to the Dems. As soon as the masses get a load of MyCane's record, don't worry. He will lose points in the polls.

The GOP will be toast by November, especially if the economy continues to tank and the Iraq government does not show any willingness to achieve reconciliation.

Considering the administration, the protestors got off lucky. They're itching to try out their shiney new mass pain ray weapon on somebody. "Battlefield weapon" my arse. Someone should keep track of the arrested, make sure nobody gets 5 years in prison for protesting.

I passed protest stage.

Anymore protest is just for kids. The elite simply laugh it off. The peons are wasting their time. The elite could care less. You aren't making a dent in their privileged lifestyle.

Patriots need to get more serious about protecting their rights. It's time patriots sent a clearer message.

Wake me when the American public is ready to begin the "real" tea party. Until then it's obvious this an exercise in futility. The elite aren't going to be too concerned until it affects them in a more personal way.

At 56 and counting I would bet I'll be dead before Americans roust themselves out of their sleepwalk and finally understand what has happened to them. By then it wil be too late. Just like economike said
" Why didn't the Germans have a resistance. Because that would have been against the rules." It's called the Good German syndrome. We've got it now.

I wonder how many of those protesters still pay their taxes. I mean, if you're going to protest at the IRS, don't send them any of your money either.

Of course, we have mass indoctrination system that keeps most people in line. Hint: It's called "public schools". Please read John Taylor Gatto's "Underground History of American Education" and you'll understand that Good German syndrome. America isn't too far from that now.

You are exactly right. But it all depend on what you carry to the protest. Ignore the stupid protest free zones. When we go right down the middle of the streets packing, it will be a different story. A lot of us will die, but thats what it takes. Have you noticed the supreme court is hearing gun regulation laws. If they take the guns we're through.

It pisses me off, that there are so many OF US LIBERAL against the right to bare arms. They still don't know how serious things are. When they get serious, i'll be there.

I agree with your basic perspective. I do, however, think these demonstrations do some good. They keep the matter in the public sphere, the duty of our 4th Estate, which it no longer performs. It keeps the thoughts alive. That's what we need to do right now. You and I sit here writing pointlessly on this forum, while those protestors are at least DOING SOMETHING that puts the issue back on the table. Also, it will be known clearly in other nations, those allies that Bush has so thoroughly offended, that there are those of us here in America that do not support the bullshit war of the Bushzies.

Your frustration, and my own, are well founded, no doubt. It is the slumbering group-think to which you refer that put us into this quagmire in the first place. But to simply sit idly by and ignore it does less good than the protestors. Will their protest, alone, change anything? No. But it does keep the thoughts alive, and it will likely be at least a contributor to any change. I'm just sayin'...
