BBC Report Sheds Light On Bush 'Hoovervilles'

"What if there was a depression and nobody told?" That's the question raised by the blogger at The Subliterate Cinephile, responding to a searing BBC report on the "subprime shantytowns" that have sprung up in Los Angeles. Reminiscent of the "Hoovervilles" that sprung up across the United States, these images - called "grim" by the BBC reporter - make all the talk of whether or not we may be heading into a recession seem awfully hollow. And the essential question, raised by Boing Boing's Cory Doctorow, is why we have "found out about this from the BBC and not US media."

You can make any point you'd like if you are in control of editing. Ask M. Moore.

The truth is a little harder to find.

get over it if we cannot make money off the sick and needy and ignorant then what good is capitalism. life is about profits not people. dont want socialism in america. commies tried that and it did not work. give me capitalism any time. i got mine now they can get theirs. god bless america. am i my bothers keeper? dont think so.

god i love fox news so fair and balanced and they are right in line with my beliefs. truly they are god's chosen people as i am.

got to go getting late and need to take some time and look for that terrorist or socialist under my bed. george bush will go down in history for fighting and killing those iraqis for flying those air planes thru the twin towers on 9/11. thank you mr president.

vote for mc cain in nov as he wants to pay back those folks in iran for flying those airplanes thru our twin towers. he is truly a war hero.

Show's how the American media is so out of touch from some of the grim realities we live in. Keep pushing the war, we will be safe from the terrorist but at a cost. It makes me sad.

WHAT a bunch of malarkey THIS is. Tent keeps the rain out, doesn't have a 'mortgage', and, and, if you don't like where you are, neighbors, new job in a different city/state, well, taking that tent down and getting it in the car or truck or minivan or whatever it is you're driving there, camel caravan for all I care, well, you're talking 2 hours, tops. Buh-bye! Not so bad, if you look at it that way. And, BBC? Britain?
What was it, Northern Rock? How many US-based mortgages were involved in THEIR shady little business deals? What's the matter, GB, got your hand caught in the cash drawer, there, now it's all America's fault? Hmmm...I can think of some GREAT remedies to help prevent a repeat of THIS particular circumstance...oyez...oyezzzz....lolol

Camping out is great for a change of pace, but for a permanent lifestyle? I don't think so. Imagine never getting a nice hot shower. A comfy chair to watch some tv from. A decent kitchen to cook meals in. A bookcase. A bed. Something is desperately wrong with this country if the height of aspirations now is something to keep the rain off your head. Hawaii is also having this sort of problem, people camping out on beaches because there are no jobs and no affordable housing. I guess as long as they stay on those beaches and in those parks and don't impede the limousines, who cares?

You make it sound so easy. I'm sure you have been in there situation and know there plight and maneuverability like the back of your hand hm? This is only one of thousands of stories American mass media hides from the people. Sad but true. I hope more people realise how they have been blinded and lied to and how they need to change what information they get and from whom.

When I want to watch real international news, I switch to BBC, French or Latin American channels.
All American news channels will not talk about the rest of the world unless it involves the US or it's too big to be ignored. How often do you hear new developments in Africa, Asia or even Europe? Almost never.
US news channels are not interested in true reporting or journalism, they are businesses trying to make a profit by catering to the viewers' basest inclinations, the more shocking the better, feed the sheep. How else would Paris Hilton become a celebrity after a porn stint? And we wonder why we never saw 9/11 coming. How come we are not holding the news channels accountable for rightly informing us? Not inform us only when it's profitable? America, raise your standards.

Our media is controlled by special interests and lobbies especially AIPAC. Most of the important stories are either censored or homogenized or revealed on the scroll thing on the bottom of the screen.

CNN and Fox dont even compare to the BBC, France 24, and Al-Jazeera English's daily coverage of real events happening in our own country and internationally.

There are more pressing matters in the world than Hillarys mood swings and following Obama. Everyone ought to wake the fuck up.

Seriously, we need to come together to patch up our country. We should all pitch in and work hard to right what's wrong with America.

When I see children "living" under these deplorable conditions it breaks my heart.

That ANYONE in this country must live in tents, or even less, and yes I'm also talking about our Veterans and the people of NOLA, is reprehensible and should rouse all citizens to take action. I do what I can and support those who do more, but it will never be enough until everyone takes responsibility (and that goes double for our elected officials). What will it take for Congress to rally to the People's side and against the irresponsible Administration serving in Our House?

I hope at the very least Bill Moyers will report on this tent city in Los Angeles. I still have faith in NPR; IPR, CBC, BBC and others continue to be terrific news sources.

For anyone reading these comments, remember, no one is immune to misfortune.

"RNC Trickle down economics." Most of us live with 2-3 months margin on our lifestyle. Medical insurance is out of reach for 1/3 of working people. If someone loses their job or gets sick they have to stop paying their mortgage or rent. If no family can take us in we are homeless. Now go beg a "compassionate neocon conservative" for food, water, and toilets. There is no government program or concern that addresses this problem. The bailouts go to companies or banks. As home values continue to drop watch Shanty Town grow.

There is no such thing as a "compassionate neocon," but otherwise your points are very well taken.

If you are interested in watching "the news", turn to the BBC. The media in THIS COUNTRY has been UTTERLY USELESS since the "blue dress" incident. Most PBS stations carry BBC World News, which is where I first learned of "BOOOshervilles" earlier this week.

I don't know which is more SHAMEFUL; that Americans are being forced out of their homes and into tents, or the fact that America's once-great Fourth Estate sees fit to ignore their plight.

I don't think it is right to call them "Bushvilles"... Maybe "Greenspanvilles"... Greenspan was the true enabler of the Real Estate bubble.

Back at the height of the bubble they could have sold tents like that in LA for 500,000$. Countrywide would have issued the mortgage and Citigroup would have bought the securitizied debt.
