Joe Klein 'Stingray' Comment Shocks, Embarrasses CNN Colleagues

Joe Klein is a Time Magazine contributor and political pundit who anonymously penned the novel Primary Colors and who, if you are unlucky enough to come within shouting distance of, will no doubt remind you of how he's covered more presidential campaigns than you. Also, lots of people think he's kind of an idiot for various reasons - for example: he has never demonstrated a functional understanding about FISA and yet he keeps on running his mouth about it.

But hey, don't take my word for it! Flash forward to today, when, in search for just the perfect metaphor to describe Obama's recent troubles, Klein's fecund imagination alights upon today's news. Specifically, the Michigan woman who died when an eagle ray leapt into her boat.

The classy remark was met with some very pained reactions. Nice work, Anonymous!

[WATCH.]

KLEIN: ...back in 1988, Dukakis staffers distributed a Biden tape, the tape where Biden was plagiarizing a British politician and they got fired. This is pretty much campaign business as usual. It's really stupid because as long as Rush Limbaugh lives and breathes on this planet, McCain doesn't have to do any dirty work. People like Limbaugh will do it for him. But I think maybe the operative metaphor here isn't drowning but the giant sting ray landing in Obama's boat.

CROSSTALK: Ooh. Oh, Joe.

KLEIN: Okay. Well...

CROSSTALK: Don't blame that one on me. Don't blame that one on me. I'm not going to go there, because someone did die from that.

I wasn't there to hear it, so I am going to withhold judgment for 20 years or so before I comment.

Same here. Sounds like an innocent if bad joke. Let's keep the outrage for when it's deserved and not go into fits for little things like this.

By the way Klein's columns are very, very nice to Obama at the moment. It doesn't hurt to have the MSM highlight his speech on race.

You are chastising him, go read some of the comments from your own on the original story.

Having watched it LIVE, the story prior to the interview was the stingray incident. Was Klein out of line to go with that analogy, yes, but it was just an off the cuff comment. He didn't mean any disrespect or anger at anyone.

It was just a lame aside.

Honestly sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

These guys know *exactly* what they are doing. They are trying to push the envelope as to what we will tolerate, all the while generating *media buzz*. This means, it's ok to say racist stuff, or hateful things as long as it helps the ratings, even if it creates negative impressions for whatever network. It's kind of like which network can create the biggest car crash and create the most gawkers wins, with the only rule being there are some things that we aren't ready to gawk at, _yet_. Sometimes you get called on it (Imus), sometimes not. I guarantee you, it this guy made a statement such as that about Terry Shivo or Bob Dole (can't use his hand) or Stephen Hawking, when all that was going on, he'd be gone. So it's about knowing who you can beat up. Bully the little people, laugh, and get enough people to laugh with you, you go far in the cable media.

It's all about the ratings. Ad dollars. viewers. Who cares if any of it is true so long as it's outrageous. All of you who keep protesting this crap and then keep watching....well, if you want someone to blame just look in the mirror.

Now now. It's not like somebody he was related to. See, the new rule is, he/she wasn't nuthin' to me, so why should it matter to me?

Ugh.

sort of amazing, don't you think? comments like this are okay, i think, a few weeks after the fact. or a few days. or at least a few hours.

i often wonder how i would react if i saw someone like klein at dinner. i'd want to tell him what a putz he is, but what good would it do?

I thought Klein was a jerk already - and his coverage this season has been awful. He's said plenty of dumb stuff over the years, this doesn't surprise me when you put fools like this on live tv.

That we as a country give this hateful little man (and I use that term very loosely) such a huge soapbox to spew his nonsense and evil speaks directly about US.

Turn off your televisions already, you mindless suburban nonentities. How simple can it be?

Exactly. He'll go away just as soon as you turn off your TV.

Comments like Joe's are why I stopped watching cable news.

I naively thought watching cable news made you smarter. Nope. It makes you dumber and more irritable.

"When you turn the TV on, you want to know something. But when you watch it and turn it off, you discover you know even less"....that's from a Jerry Seinfeld around 2002 or so. I'm paraphrasing a bit.

I've snipped my cable, and so have nearly all my neighbors, as if we all got sick of it at the same time... I wonder if there is an actual trend going on.

C-SPAN (1, 2, and 3 if you're an addict), and PBS---both available to view online---will each give you more relevant World and Government information in 15 minutes than you could get off of Cable opinion "news" in 15 hours of viewing (you've got to wait through 10 hours of celebrity coverage to get 3 minutes on Foreign affairs).

You definitely aren't alone.

Yes, TV actually makes you, not just less informed, but stupider as well; less able to winnow the wheat from the huge mound of chaff.

As usual, follow the money. Who benefits from you sitting there like a lump? Mega-corporations, is who. EVERYTHING about television is calculated to keep you stranded on the couch, NOT using your mind, until the money moment: The commercials!

In the Corporatist mind, we the people are destined to shop, and shop only; to funnel our hard-earned money into their corporate coffers.

As a fringe benefit for them, television makes people too stupid to realize what's happening to their brains (and bodies), from so much exposure to toxic, childish, and selfish philosophies. It makes us easy to steer in their preferred directions, because we want so much that we don't really need; and also because television has taught us not to expect to be told the truth; and because our memories of their offenses expire with the spin cycle.

The only way out of a drug dependency is to quit abusing the drug. That applies to television as well; the electronic psychactive drug.

----

stop watching tv, and free your mind.

how can a man like this be allowed "in" public . . . let alone to be given a forum to speak to masses.

The fact that such an infantile dumbfuck is a columnist in one of the nation's "premier" magazines speaks volumes about the pathetic state of American journalism. He's a quack, he's a hack, he's a jackass.

The fact that you think Time is one of the Nation's premier magazine shows how low you set the bar.

We aren't on TV, but your point is well taken. Try to imagine this scenario. You invite certain people to a party and one guest gets out of control. The other guests look to you to handle the situation because after all, it is your party.

Now imagine this one. You put up fliers all over town saying, "Party at Arianna's". Everyone gets out of hand. Do you go look for Arianna, or do you call the bouncer(moderator) and point out the guests who are causing trouble?
