This could be the first harbinger of the web gossip bust. Pagesix.com, Rupert Murdoch's entertainment news site, is being shuttered, effective today. The URL already redirects to the New York Post's main website. Pagesix.com, which was largely independent of the newspaper's Page Six print column, had been live only since December. "Given the difficulty in the economy, it was not the right time for this launch," said Jennifer Jehn, Senior Vice President of Pagesix.com. A total of 18 editorial and support staffers will be let go and three reassigned within the New York Post.

It's strange that the Page 6 site was a casualty of a recession which some say doesn't exist. It would be fun it the Rupesters employees admitted that it was a lousy idea & didn't attract users. P6's copy doesn't lend itself well to the web. It couldn't hope to compete with HP or other long established sites which already cover gossip. At least something good has come out of this recession.

A Rupert Murdoch web site is not profitable. (yawn). Okay, fine. Good, I guess. Who cares?

Why would anybody else even try to bring out another internet gossip site when Huffpost is already doing it better than anybody else.

They spelled PageSex wrong.

So you know the reason it folded, right?

Murdoch's bean counters did the math and said "hey, we've already got a gossip/tabloid related property that pretty much either leads with tabloid journalism or makes up gossip and reports it as we go along - it's called Fox News"

Redundancy - hence the ax to page six. But Fox still has all the Anna Nicole and Britney Spears to get you thru your day.

Gee - you don't think the lousy choice of a dotcom name would have been the main reason?

Hmmmmmmm.
