WASHINGTON — Former top White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby was banned Thursday from practicing law in the nation's capital following his perjury conviction in the case of a CIA operative's leaked identity. The disbarment order of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals had been expected.

"When a member of the bar is convicted of an offense involving moral turpitude, disbarment is mandatory," the appeals court ruled.

Last May, a court panel that oversees lawyer ethics recommended that Libby be stripped of his law license in Washington. The Board on Professional Responsibility then found that Libby's conviction for lying to the FBI about the case of former CIA operative Valerie Plame amounted to "crimes that involve moral turpitude."

"This action is required by the rules following a conviction regardless of the merits of the case, and for that reason Mr. Libby expected and did not oppose the court's order," said Libby attorney William Jeffress.

Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, was first licensed to work as a lawyer in Washington in 1978. His membership with the D.C. bar also was suspended for failing to pay his dues, records show.

Thursday's appeals court ruling also noted that "neither bar counsel nor respondent has taken exception to the board's report and recommendation."

Libby was the only person to face criminal charges in the case of the 2003 leak of Plame's identity. Plame has since left the CIA and contends the White House was trying to discredit her husband, a critic of President Bush's Iraq policy.

Last July, Bush commuted Libby's 2 1/2-year sentence, sparing him from serving any prison time after being convicted of perjury and obstructing justice. Libby dropped appeals to have his convictions overturned. He has paid a $250,000 fine and remains on two years probation.

I don't think a Bush pardon can 'un'-disbar the S.O.B., right? He's disbarred for keeps?

Apparently, 'patriotism' for the right-wing means exposing undercover CIA agents out of spite.

Cant be undone by the President.......disbarred for keeps..........but notice the language......diabarred only in Washington D.C. And that means he can set up shop in another state. Hope I didn't ruin your day!

Is he devistated? Ha! He never dreamed of making the money he's making now from neocon "think tanks" (no actual thinking required).

That means that his bosses are guilty of crimes of moral turpitude. Why then is impeachment off the table? Failure to discipline the superiors is tantamount to ratifying the conduct. The Democrats have demonstrated a failure of courage and moral conviction. Bill Clinton was disciplined. What about the other culprits?

Our system of law and order has become a mockery of justice. How does a law student even study law nowadays? It has become a joke. It;s whatever the right wingers and the complicit Democrats say it is or allow it to be. Could it be that he who has the gold rules. It sure looks like that to me.

I really don't think Scooter was going to practice since he helped get a pardon for Marc Rich from Bill Clinton. Can you imagine, "Your honor, this is my attorney Scooter." What?

It really makes me sick to my stomach.

Impeachment is off the table because your queen said "impeachment is off the table."

Live with it.

Queen? This is NOT a monarchy. And George is NOT the King. Repeat it until you believe it.

Finally something Scooter, Cheney, Rove and Bush couldn't put the fix in for.

Either that or Cheney and Bush's loyalty stopped at the pardon and now Scooter is like anyone else outside the Bush inner circle - fucked.
