Denver Short On Funds For Democratic National Convention

The long and winding fight for the Democratic presidential nomination is giving a fundraising migraine to the Mile High City.

As the host city, Denver must raise $40.6 million by June 16 for the party's Aug. 25-28 convention. This week, the host committee missed its second fundraising deadline, and Mayor John W. Hickenlooper said he believed the drawn-out battle between Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois had distracted potential donors.

There is always a risk when trying to scrounge up money in Denver for an event there that they'll send you packing. I still remember when the local citezens tossed out the Olympics.

Money is the least of the Democrats' problems.
From "Transterrestrial Musings" blog:
********

A Disaster Brewing For The Democrats?
In Denver.

Denver is not equipped to handle any convention scenario other than a coronation, and certainly not the most (potentially) contentious national convention in 40 years.

It is important to point out that the state of Colorado, and the city of Denver, is currently nearly completely controlled by Democrats at every level of government. This puts these locals in a box, politically and from a law enforcement standpoint. This sets up a scenario similar to Seattle 1999 WTO debacle. I happened to be living in downtown Seattle during that awful experience, and what stands out is that the city and state (even the Federal Government at that time) were all controlled by Democrats at every level, even police chief. That meant they were politically unwilling to confront their own in the days leading up to the summit: that is, the anti-globalism/WTO protestors, greenies, and union members that were planning major marches, civil disobedience, and even outright mischief.

The reason is simple, they didn't want to alienate their own constituencies by seeming too heavy handed. The result was that by the time they had to crackdown, it was too late and with police state tactics, water cannons, gas cannisters, police in riot gear, and dusk to dawn curfews on the streets. There is still a lot of these scenes on YouTube and many disenchanted lefties are promising a repeat in Denver this year. Any variation of this would be a potential public relations disaster for the Democrat nominee in trying to win Colorado, and one that would virtually ensure not only a McCain victory in the state, but a stigmatization that could likely lead to major setbacks for the Democrat party in Colorado for years to come.

If the DNC would scale back its event, it would help them a lot. They appear to have triple the number of delegates over what the Republicans need to choose their candidate, and it looks like the Democratic convention is an excuse to treat their members to an expensive party. This season of primaries doesn't have me wanting to help them fund anything.

It's time for the DNC to do what Obama did which is to go to the American people for funding. I am going to plead ignorance here but if I knew they were taking money online I wouldn't mind kicking then some money.

I don't think anything to worry about they will raise the money they need.

I will be happy to contribute to the DNC once the primary mess is cleaned up and united with Obama as the nominee.

Here's where you can make a donation to the DNC - I kicked in my $25 last week, and may do so again come payday.

"very serious, dangerous situation . . . for everybody."

Will Denver be the new Chicago? From the Rocky Mountain News:
*******

Denver could face a "dangerous situation" on the first day of the Democratic National Convention, war protesters said Thursday, after losing a coveted permit for Civic Center to the convention host committee.

"When things blow up because the police have to enforce a permit that the Democrats got, don"t blame us for that," said Glenn Spagnuolo, an organizer for the Re-create 68 Alliance.

"Blame the Democrats for trying to silence dissent in the city of Denver."

The lottery for permits to protest, pray or hold other events in city parks during the DNC Aug. 24 through 28 resumed Thursday after the city bungled the drawing Tuesday by accidentally leaving out some of the applicants" names.

The do-over went smoothly.

But when Jenny Anderson, event planner for the Denver 2008 Convention Host Committee, won the permit for Civic Center for a kick-off Aug. 24, Spagnuolo accused the committee of creating a "very serious, dangerous situation . . . for everybody."

Re-create 68 - which has promised demonstrations that will rival those at the bloody 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago - will be at Civic Center on Aug. 24, with or without a permit, he said.

My guess is that money will remain short, given the way Dean has not managed to resolve the issue of FL and MI.

Let Obama pay for the convention. :)

Obama may as well pay for the convention, 60 Obama supporters in Cheyenne, WY raised enough money to book the convention center for the Laramie County Caucus Convention as the Wyoming Democratic Party didn't have the necessary funds. That's what Obama supporters do, support the party. I will admit, as a long time party activist in Denver, I have given much less money to the party this year. A lot of that money has gone to my chosen candidate.

What is this now? The 1976 Winter Olympics all over again? Will the Democrats have to go meet in Insbruck now?
