I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Peck

Meet the man who inspired Reverend Jeremiah Wright's now famous tirade about America's foreign policy inciting the terrorist attacks of September 11.

His name is Ambassador Edward Peck. And he is a retired, white, career U.S. diplomat who served 32-years in the U.S. Foreign Service and was chief of the U.S. mission to Iraq under Jimmy Carter -- hardly the black-rage image with which Wright has been stigmatized.

In fact, when Wright took the pulpit to give his post-9/11 address -- which has since become boiled down to a five second sound bite about "America's chickens coming home to roost" -- he prefaced his remarks as a "faith footnote," an indication that he was deviating from his sermon.

"I heard Ambassador Peck on an interview yesterday," Wright declared. "He was on Fox News. This is a white man and he was upsetting the Fox News commentators to no end. He pointed out, a white man, an ambassador, that what Malcolm X said when he got silenced by Elijah Muhammad was in fact true: America's chickens are coming home to roost."

Wright then went on to list more than a few U.S. foreign policy endeavors that, by the tone of his voice and manner of his expression, he viewed as more or less deplorable. This included, as has been demonstrated in the endless loop of clips from his sermon, bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki and nuking "far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon and we never batted an eye."

"Violence begets violence," Wright said, "hatred begets hatred, and terrorism begets terrorism."

And then he concluded by putting the comments on Peck's shoulders: "A white ambassador said that yall, not a black militant, not a reverend who preaches about racism, an ambassador whose eyes are wide open and is trying to get us to wake up and move away from this dangerous precipice... the ambassador said that the people we have wounded don't have the military capability we have, but they do have individuals who are willing to die and take thousands with them... let me stop my faith footnote right there."

Watch the video (the relevant material starts around the 3:00 mark):

Story continues below

So it seems that while Wright did believe American held some responsibility for 9/11, his views, which have been described as radically outside the political mainstream, were actually influenced by a career foreign policy official.

Who is Peck? The ambassador, who has offered controversial criticism of Israeli policy in the West Bank but also warned against the Iraq War, was lecturing on a cruise ship and was unavailable for comment. But officials at Peck's former organization, the Council for the National Interest, a non-profit group that advocates reducing Israel's influence on U.S. Middle East policy, offered descriptions of the man.

"Peck is very outspoken," said Eugene Bird, who now heads CNI. "He is also very good at making phrases that have a resonance with the American people. When he came off of that Fox News, a few days later he said they would never invite me back again."

And what, exactly, did Peck say in that Fox News interview that inspired Wright's words?

Here are some quotes from an appearance the Ambassador made on the network on October 11, 2001, which may or may not have been the segment Wright was referring to. On the show, Peck said he thought it was illogical to tie Saddam Hussein to the terrorist attacks on 9/11, and that while the then-Iraqi leader had "some very sound and logical reasons not to like [the United States]," he and Osama bin Laden had no other ties.

From there, Peck went on to ascribe motives for what prompted the 9/11 attacks. "Stopping the economic embargo and bombings of Iraq," he said, "things to which Osama bin Laden has alluded as the kinds of things he doesn't like. He doesn't think it's appropriate for the United States to be doing, from his perspective, all the terrible things that he sees us as having been doing, the same way Saddam Hussein feels. So from that perspective, they have a commonality of interests. But they also have a deeply divergent view of the role of Islam in government, which would be a problem."

Ambassador Peck is not Anti-American. He is a truth-seeking patriot, a veteran, a public servant who served under Republican and Democratic Presidents, an expert on Middle East, Islamic governments, and terrorism. I remember the TV and internet ads before 3/2003 that Peck and Susan Sarandon had out speaking out against military action in Iraq. He's been relentless about speaking the truth about Iraq. It's too bad the Bush administration never listened.

And you will never see CNN or MSNBC correct the record. They will keep this buried as will the NY Times, Washington Post and all the other MSM media that want to keep the status quo; corporate power.

The only person on the major networks that probably would have the guts to spill this would be Jack Cafferty but that is it!

Actually, we all need to demand that the each MSM outlet loudly and repeatedly apologize to the nation, Obama and Wright every day for as many days as they repeated their lies. When, America, are we going to get enough of this?

Will this get as much air time on CNN and FOX as the 30 second snippet did? I think not. Dirty double standards.

I am so glad Obama called out the media in his speech. Why were Wright's controversial statements placed in a loop over and over and replayed endlessly on all channels? Why were the context of his sermons not discussed at all? If the "journalists" were too busy pontificating, could they not at least send their interns to do a little research?

I feel fucking duped by the media. For real. I've made some shitty comments to people about Obama because of this, but seeing it in context I'm truly sorry I did. I can see what Obama would see in this man. He really is a wise dude.

Wait, wait, wait. We can't lay this bullshit at the feet of Fox news because this is what Fox does and is supposed to do.

This fraud was perpetrated by CNN, Wolff Blitzer, and all of the other anchors and reporters and commentators who played the Wright video over and over again. This fraud was perpetrated by hypocritical, sanctimoneous assholes whose only purpose was to get Obama's blood.

They very nearly got away with it, too.

Wonder what Wolff's lead story is going to be tonight?

Can Trinity Church sue ABC and Fox?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:19 PM on 03/21/2008

If people would only read and look at things in context. Look at the damage we've done for a few weeks now to Senator Obama, when this man was not being a racist at all. Shame on us! Let's see how we like it now that most of these views were actually from a white person, not this racist black pastor as so many people wanted to say. I'll bet we cannot even acknowledge how wrong we were.

Obama: I have a deep faith
Barack Obama credits his multicultural upbringing for his theological point of view.

BY CATHLEEN FALSANI Sun-Times Columnist.
These days, he says, he attends the 11 a.m. Sunday service at Trinity in the Brainerd neighborhood every week -- or at least as many weeks as he is able. His pastor, Wright, has become a close confidant.

So how did he become a churchgoer?

It began in 1985, when he came to Chicago as a $13,000-a-year community organizer, working with a number of African-American churches in the Roseland, West Pullman and Altgeld Gardens neighborhoods that were trying to deal with the devastation caused by shuttered steel plants.

"I started working with both the ministers and the lay people in these churches on issues like creating job-training programs, or after-school programs for youth, or making sure that city services were fairly allocated to underserved communities," he says. "And it was in those places where I think what had been more of an intellectual view of religion deepened.

"I became much more familiar with the ongoing tradition of the historic black church and its importance in the community. And the power of that culture to give people strength in very difficult circumstances, and the power of that church to give people courage against great odds. And it moved me deeply.".
Obama admits it's not easy for politicians to talk about faith.

"Part of the reason I think it's always difficult for public figures to talk about this is that the nature of politics is that you want to have everybody like you and project the best possible traits onto you," he says. "Oftentimes, that's by being as vague as possible, or appealing to the lowest common denominators. The more specific and detailed you are on issues as personal and fundamental as your faith, the more potentially dangerous it is.

"Oh God, don't look at the man behind the curtain!!

I simply must have this Wright flap be true, because I need HRC to win SOO much that exploiting racist sentiment in the US is so perfectly acceptable, even as a member of the political party that has fought hard against racism for the last three decades.

The fact that attempting to portray this man as anti-american and racist is insincere, classless, and bigoted will just boost our "fighter" bona fides, and we all now that the lesson of the last 8 years is to imitate Karl Rove if we are to win."

I present above the new thinking of the HRC campaign and her supporters (just go check out taylormarsh.com, it is frightening. They have deluded themselves into behaving and speaking like reactionary white racists due to their NEED to have HRC win and their NEED for this new controversy to sully Obama. This party may not actually recover in time t win the general, if that NEED is so great it turns a bunch of former Dems into intolerant bigots

Thank you for post the full context of the speech! Pastor Wright's sermon was heart felt and inspiring. I see nothing but wisdom and truth in this sermon but some how Fox new and others have manged to take snippers completely out of context and demonize this man.

The only thing that makes me upset now is the fact that Barack went to such extremes to distance himself from the comments. I realize this was a political move on his part because he couldn't know that the truth would ever get out concerning the context of Pastor Wright's comments but I don't think he showed political courage in this particular instance. He did redeem himself by giving the now famous speech however.

"The only thing that makes me upset now is the fact that Barack went to such extremes to distance himself from the comments."

i agree with you there. i will still vote for him, but i have indeed noticed his tendency to hedge and play it safe....then again, knowing what we know about everything and what people reactions can be, i really can't say that i blame him so much, but i am a bit disappointed. i grew up going to churches with what we call "charismatic" preachers, and so i knew there had to be a build to the statements we were all being shown, but this man is EXCEPTIONALLY insightful, and makes me have even more respect for and understanding of obama. it is so sad that he politically had to distance himself. it does indeed look like if he didn't exactly throw the pastor under the bus, he at least left him to get splashed by the puddle when the bus drove by.

I disagree with you. Obama showed tremendous courage by not disassociating with Pastor Wright. Many people were calling for Obama to disown his pastor, but he refused to do so.

There's a difference between political courage and political suicide. The fact that Obama was put into this position by the media is the true shame. Jeremiah Wright was a bomb that exploded in the Obama campaign and instead of reporters trying to find the reasons behind the explosion they were more interested in filming the carnage. They've made the news industry in America look like a joke in my opinion.

DON'T YOU THINK IF AN AMBASSADOR SAID THIS AFTER 9/11 THAT WE and THE WORLD WOULD HAVE HEARD ABOUT IT.

WAIT A MINUTE! GET THE STORY STRAIGHT. THOSE ARE NOT PECK'S WORDS. It is not even close. HE IS NOT QUOTING PECK!

Isn't jumping the gun and believing all you hear what got our guy in trouble in the first place????

Do you really want to direct attention back to It?

It's certainly better in it's totality but still the words are harsh in that it still won't be understood.

As early as October 2001, Peck was speaking out about the dangers of misdirecting our military might to Iraq:

And so there it is. Funny how commonsense and reality has a minority look to it. But there are always some whites who get it. This won't make some people happy regardless, but Americans of all hues should realize unlike 90% of elected officials, Rev. Wright has served in this country's military as a Marine. And as such, he took an oath to protect the Constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic. Some of the best critics of a nation are its ministers and soldiers. They keep them honest. Since we claim to be sooooo Christian, we should keep in mind the scripture that basically says "to chasten is to love". To love someone or this country is not to turn a blind eye to its faults. You must try to effect change. Obama couldn't have the insight he has without listening to Rev. Wright's sermons and see how he could make a difference. And THAT is why he stayed there for 20 years.

Go figure... Railroaders & Swift Boaters need to remember we live in a new technological age.
If you give the "Virtual Detectives" a few days... they will dig up everything you'll need to know...that is... if you want to use sound judgement on a topic...
We live in a day & age where, the media can't silence the different perspectives that goes against the one's that's padding the pockets... Now they will have to echo the inflections of the prespective...

It's so ironic and a little sad that all of those who judged Reverend Wright on this blogsite, basing their judgment solely on the soundbites provided by Sean Hannity and Fox News, have not posted once on this particular topic. It's as if they are so hardened in their hatred that they don't even want to see the truth, and will probably choose not to even read the article, which makes me believe that their vitriol toward Reverend Wright really wasn't about him at all; it was simply a way to attack Senator Obama and for many of them, an excuse to reject a very capable candidate who happens to be black. I have only recently started reading and writing on this blogsite, and it has truly been an amazing venture which has given me insight on the pulse of America. In some ways, it has been very frightening to read how people think and what makes them tick, so to speak; but in even more ways, it has been very encouraging to know that there are so many people "out there" who are critical thinkers, who are willing to disseminate all of the information before they make a judgment,
