Peck

Meet the man who inspired Reverend Jeremiah Wright's now famous tirade about America's foreign policy inciting the terrorist attacks of September 11.

His name is Ambassador Edward Peck. And he is a retired, white, career U.S. diplomat who served 32-years in the U.S. Foreign Service and was chief of the U.S. mission to Iraq under Jimmy Carter -- hardly the black-rage image with which Wright has been stigmatized.

In fact, when Wright took the pulpit to give his post-9/11 address -- which has since become boiled down to a five second sound bite about "America's chickens coming home to roost" -- he prefaced his remarks as a "faith footnote," an indication that he was deviating from his sermon.

"I heard Ambassador Peck on an interview yesterday," Wright declared. "He was on Fox News. This is a white man and he was upsetting the Fox News commentators to no end. He pointed out, a white man, an ambassador, that what Malcolm X said when he got silenced by Elijah Muhammad was in fact true: America's chickens are coming home to roost."

Wright then went on to list more than a few U.S. foreign policy endeavors that, by the tone of his voice and manner of his expression, he viewed as more or less deplorable. This included, as has been demonstrated in the endless loop of clips from his sermon, bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki and nuking "far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon and we never batted an eye."

"Violence begets violence," Wright said, "hatred begets hatred, and terrorism begets terrorism."

And then he concluded by putting the comments on Peck's shoulders: "A white ambassador said that yall, not a black militant, not a reverend who preaches about racism, an ambassador whose eyes are wide open and is trying to get us to wake up and move away from this dangerous precipice... the ambassador said that the people we have wounded don't have the military capability we have, but they do have individuals who are willing to die and take thousands with them... let me stop my faith footnote right there."

Watch the video (the relevant material starts around the 3:00 mark):

Story continues below

So it seems that while Wright did believe American held some responsibility for 9/11, his views, which have been described as radically outside the political mainstream, were actually influenced by a career foreign policy official.

Who is Peck? The ambassador, who has offered controversial criticism of Israeli policy in the West Bank but also warned against the Iraq War, was lecturing on a cruise ship and was unavailable for comment. But officials at Peck's former organization, the Council for the National Interest, a non-profit group that advocates reducing Israel's influence on U.S. Middle East policy, offered descriptions of the man.

"Peck is very outspoken," said Eugene Bird, who now heads CNI. "He is also very good at making phrases that have a resonance with the American people. When he came off of that Fox News, a few days later he said they would never invite me back again."

And what, exactly, did Peck say in that Fox News interview that inspired Wright's words?

Here are some quotes from an appearance the Ambassador made on the network on October 11, 2001, which may or may not have been the segment Wright was referring to. On the show, Peck said he thought it was illogical to tie Saddam Hussein to the terrorist attacks on 9/11, and that while the then-Iraqi leader had "some very sound and logical reasons not to like [the United States]," he and Osama bin Laden had no other ties.

From there, Peck went on to ascribe motives for what prompted the 9/11 attacks. "Stopping the economic embargo and bombings of Iraq," he said, "things to which Osama bin Laden has alluded as the kinds of things he doesn't like. He doesn't think it's appropriate for the United States to be doing, from his perspective, all the terrible things that he sees us as having been doing, the same way Saddam Hussein feels. So from that perspective, they have a commonality of interests. But they also have a deeply divergent view of the role of Islam in government, which would be a problem."

It saddens me, though it does not surprise me, that America at large is not really interested in the truth of what Wright said, or where he got it from. It is more comfortable to write him off and continue to paint America as a blameless country.

As I have written, I support Reverend Dr. Wright's right to speak these words - whether they are his or words that he repeated during a faith footnote. I do wonder though at people who preach against hate in a hateful manner. My problem has never been with Dr. Wright but with Senator Obama's reactions to his words. I acknowledge that many believe actions by the US were in some way responsible for 9-11 (although here again, I'm not ever sure that violence in response to another's violence is a rational way to go about things) but Reverend Dr. Wright said other things, things that I would expect a man (or woman) who is running for president of a diverse country to at the very least discuss. I'm not suggesting that BO should repudiate his minister, I am suggesting that he should have opened a dialogue with him as a way of educating the congregation to a different point of view.

How in the world do you know he didn't?

Obama refuses to respond even to vicious invented attacks from his own party with anything less than a complex, thoughtful answer that shows he's put some time into developing his response. I'm not sure why anyone would think that he would take a different approach in his regular life. They had a personal relationship, so there was certainly opportunity.

The reason a thoughtful, rational person continues to associate with a group of socially or culturally developmentally delayed people (whether their church, their family, their fraternity, their political party) is that the only influence reason can have on vitriol and magical thinking is through it's consistent, calm demonstration of...well, reason, thought, and rational behavior. People will listen to you if you try to understand why they are the way they are and keep in mind that they feel their feelings as much as everyone else, though those feelings are all muddled up and they don't (yet) have the ability to parse them, realize fears for what they are - fears - rather than applying magical thinking to them. They do tend more toward emotionally extreme responses, violence, etc. If you just get huffy, tell them they're all dumbasses and march out of there to find "better people" or something, you have not only failed to continue to position yourself to help and lead by example, but also have given those confused people more fodder for their magical thinking.

The problem I have with your argument heywhat is that you believe Rev. Wright's congregation needs to be educated to a "different point of view". I've watched the full videos of the sermons in question and see nothing immoral or unAmerican about them.
We the sheeple have allowed this man's reputation to be destroyed over a few 30 second sound bytes on Fox news rather than look at the 30 years of service to his church and his country. We actually owe this man an apology!
Please take the time to view the videos. You can find them on YouTube or you can get a more personal perspective from one of the congregations members at http://www.truthabouttrinity.blogspot.com/
Please people, stop watching FOX news. It is a right wing propaganda machine with their own agenda, not yours.

" ... he should have opened a dialogue with him as a way of education the congregation to a different point of view."

Are you suggesting that the predominately African American congregation to whom Reverend Wright speaks should be educated to YOUR POINT OF VIEW, and then you can accept the truth of what he speaks? Why should this congregation or Reverend Wright be judged by YOUR POINT OF VIEW or by YOUR standards of what the right point of view is? When was the last time you walked in their shoes to understand that THEIR point of view based on their experience might just be as legitimate as YOUR point of view based on your experience?

Haven't all of you been watching and paying attention? Barack doesn't want the race issue out there..the more it's there, the more he's seen as the race candidate and the more it keeps going.

Well, I tried.

This is unbelievable! Sean Hannity and every peddler that has pushed this story are in great trouble with God. They've caused so much trouble for this man. I promise you, this will not go unnoticed by the Lord.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:24 PM on 03/21/2008

What Sean Hannity and Fox have done is actually CRIMINAL. They were already in great trouble with God as they have pushed the Republican/conservative agenda and supported Bush's lies for the last seven years! I have heard people say that Fox is the only news program they watch, so you can imagine how many Americans have been brainwashed by them. I've watched them also, but only to hear the other side, or as the old saying goes, "Stay close to your friends, but stay closer to your enemies." I think one of my greatest moments, besides seeing Senator Obama elected President, would be to see Fox PUNISHED FOR WHAT THEY HAVE DONE. The hypocrisy of them accusing Reverend Wright as racist is reprehensible. They have slandered his good name and have used him unmercilessly as a weapon against Senator Obama ... all to serve a political agenda, knowing that if Senator Obama is out of the picture and Hillary is the nominee, the Republicans would retain the White House. Knowing as well that if Senator Obama is the nominee, there would be no way they can defeat him, especially now that the only weapon they had has been rendered powerless.

Hi Richardsgirl-I agree-People seem to be overlooking the fact that by completely misrepresenting Pastor Wright, the media are also smearing him & his congregation of 8,500 people-They claim he hates America-Well, he volunteered for the Marines & served this country in Viet Nam, when most of the guys I knew were heading for Canada instead-They tell us that he went to Syria with Farrakan-What they omit is why-That trip was actually headed by Jesse Jackson-It occured in 1984 & the purpose was to try to secure the release of an American Navy pilot, who had been captured when his plane went down over Lebanon-The guy's name is Lt. Robert Goodman-He was badly injured & his fellow pilot died in captivity-Our government had failed to win his release-Pastors Wright, Jackson & Farrakan succeeded- They portray him as a fool, when he has earned 2 masters degrees & a phd-He's also been awarded 8 honorary phd.s-His church is part of the large, mostly white, United Church of Christ & THEY never had a problem with his ministry!-Pastor Wright, his congregation & all the good works they do are being swift boated-We need to find a way to get the msm to set the record straight-As fellow Americans, we owe it to him-

Wright has a point.

Americans want to condenm him for telling the truth about hate begetting hate (chickens coming home to roost).

but your fine with having Dick Cheney or George Bush continue to say Saddam was connected to Al Qaeda EVEN though it's been long proven a LIE)???????
-or you're fine with having a GOP Presidential candidate sing "Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran"---with NO intel or provocation by Iran-other than they have oil...???????

I'm beginning to see Wrights' point---it seems the media and the GOP want you to think up is down and down is up, black is white.........
the minds of this country are so confused they don't know what to think...
so maybe it takes something SHOCKING by a pastor or whomever--to wake people out of thier sleep.

YOU WILL NEVER SEE THIS ON FAUX NEWS, CNN, ABCNews, or even MSNBC!

Otherwise, they will eat crow!

ABCNews is the worst. They so badly want to be the next FauxNews. they are the ones responsible for taking a sermon and only editing the most vitriolic part of it.

GODDAM ABC!

check out the youTube channel "Trinity Chgo" for unedited versions of Rev. Wright's sermons. He is not a hate monger but a fantastically insightful and thoughtful minister. WrightGate is not just a distortion, it's a LIE. Senator Obama sat in church for 20 years listening to thought provoking examinations of the human condition from a Biblical perspective. Fox News and co. will never be forgiven for the disservice it has done to the American public.

Not only Fox News, but--even more disgracefully, CNN, and MSNBC, the latter being so obsessed with the story the first day it hit, I simply had to turn it off before throwing something at the TV! And, Chris Matthews was still pushing the same old misrepresentations last night!

We, out here in the "blogosphere", MUST mobilize to force the MSM to present the TRUTH and expose this "swiftboating" of Wright and Obama, which is playing right into the hands of the Republicans! Remember WHO is now "McCain's Brain"!

Somehow, I knew the truth would come out. I have listened to this entire sermon. This man has been so, unfairly, portrayed.

Everyone owes him an apology.

And, Fox News should be abolished from the airwaves. They are deliberately trying to destroy Obama and they don't care what it takes.

Obama will be fine. We will be fine. The truth will prevail.

I am sick to my stomach after watching the full video of Wright's sermon . Sick about how none of the mainstream media or pundits bothered to do simple research and continue to parrot each other about this man . I wasn't buying it initially but also neglected to do my own research and am ashamed to admit I was beginning to believe the media lies after watching the endless soundbites - interesting that now they dont even play the sound just video of him moving around like a crazy person and use any excuse to give us another dose on primetime newscasts because we have already been conditioned that this is bad. Wright is no crazy man -this is a thoughtful person who is asking his listeners to think about some painful things. If the media has any shred of decency left would play this in its entirety and offer the man an apology. Thank God for blogs...

PLEASE READ, YOU'RE JUST HURTING OBAMA

STOP PASSING THIS AROUND. IT LEADS TO THE YOU TUBE VIDEO ALSO AND THEY THINK HERE AND THERE THAT WRIGHT IS QUOTING THIS AMBASSADOR GUY AND USING THIS AS JUSTIFICATION TO KEEP IT GOING AND REVENGE.

He is NOT QUOTING THE AMBASSADOR. DO NOT PASS THIS AROUND> YOU'LL JUST KEEP HURTING OBAMA. Read the Article above if you don't believe me. Don't you think if the Aambassador had really said this, we wouldn't haven't known it years ago?

This will still seem harsh to many people, especially those that have already made up their minds.

Isn't jumping the gun and believing all you hear what got our guy in trouble in the 1st place?

This is only one speech. If they dig, never know what will come up and will be defending him again.

Really want to direct attention back to it? DON'T DRAW ATTENTION BACK TO IT, PLEASE.

About time someone set the record straight. Thanks Sam. Great reporting. We owe you. I had watched that Fox interview and instantly became a Peck fan. However, I did not realise until you pointed out that Rev Wright was quoting (albeit paraphrasing) his words. But well-meaning yet unthinking Americans will go to their graves believing that Rev Wright is the Devil incarnate and Obama by association is tarred for life. What a pity.

My favorite quote by Ambassador Peck was as follows. While responding to the endless assertions by the Administration that the American trrops were trying to win the heart and minds of Iraqis, he said sarcastically: "You cannot win the hearts and minds of the Iraqis when their hearts and minds are flying in the air". The allusion was to the American bombing causing Iraqis to explode.

Perhaps someone can post that clip as well.
