PORTLAND, Ore. — Bill Richardson, the nation's only Hispanic governor, threw his support behind Barack Obama for president Friday, delivering one of the most coveted and tightly held endorsements in the race for the Democratic nomination.

The New Mexico governor joined Obama at spirited rally Friday and said the Illinois senator demonstrated his leadership abilities this week with his speech on race. "You are a once-in-a-lifetime leader," the governor said from the stage. "Above all, you will be a president who brings this nation together."

Richardson dropped his own bid for the nomination in January. His support for Obama comes during a tough period for the senator, the leader in the delegate chase over Hillary Rodham Clinton. Obama has seen his lead in national polls wither as he's grappled with the fallout from divisive remarks by his former pastor.

Richardson was relentlessly courted by both candidates and his support for Obama represents a potential counterweight to Clinton's strength among Hispanic voters.

As a Democratic superdelegate, the governor plays a part in the tight race for nominating votes and could bring other superdelegates to Obama's side. He also had been mentioned as a potential running mate for either candidate.

No primaries are scheduled until Pennsylvania's on April 22, a gap Obama hopes to use for such announcements to assert that he is the front-runner for the nomination. Oregon hold its primary May 20.

Richardson backed Obama despite his ties to Clinton and her husband, the former president. Richardson served as ambassador to the U.N. and as secretary of the Energy Department during the Clinton administration. Last month, Richardson and former President Clinton watched the Super Bowl together at the governor's residence in Santa Fe.

Richardson praised Hillary Clinton as a "distinguished leader with vast experience." But the governor said Obama "will be a historic and great president, who can bring us the change we so desperately need by bringing us together as a nation here at home and with our allies abroad."

The Clinton campaign was publicly dismissive of the endorsement, after the New York senator failed to win it for herself.

Citing Clinton's victory in New Mexico in February, senior strategist Mark Penn said, "Perhaps the time when he could have been most effective has long since past."

Richardson was a roving diplomatic troubleshooter when he was a congressman from New Mexico, negotiating the release of U.S. hostages in several countries and meeting with a rogue's gallery of U.S. adversaries, including Saddam Hussein and Fidel Castro.

"There is no doubt in my mind that Barack Obama has the judgment and courage we need in a commander in chief when our nation's security is on the line," Richardson said. "He showed this judgment by opposing the Iraq war from the start, and he has shown it during this campaign by standing up for a new era in American leadership internationally."

Obama embraced the endorsement of an accomplished figure on the world stage who "understands the importance of restoring diplomacy as a central part of our national security strategy."

Both men have proposed negotiating with enemies as well as friends, while Clinton has emphasized the need to press for changes in repressive or hostile regimes before engaging with them at the presidential level.

But there were also personal aspects to Richardson's swing behind Obama. He noted that both are the sons of one foreign-born parent _ Obama's father was from Kenya, Richardson's mother was from Mexico.

And Richardson told of the time, during one of the many Democratic debates, when his attention wandered and he didn't hear the question that came at him. Obama, then his rival, bailed him out by whispering to him that it was about Hurricane Katrina.

"He could have thrown me under the bus," Richardson cracked, "but he stood behind me."

Among veterans of the once-crowded field of Democratic presidential hopefuls, Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut is the only other one who has taken a side so far. Dodd also endorsed Obama.

John Edwards, the strongest performer among the nomination dropouts, has also been wooed by Clinton and Obama but he's not announced an endorsement.

Gov. Richardson said after the Superbowl that he was looking for positivity in the campaign before chosing whom to endorse. HRH HRC decided to go negative, & lost him. She has no one to blame but herself. She should stop her scorched earth policy vs anyone against her (Richardson, DNC, media...). It might all be HER OWN fault ~ can't women take responsibility?

This endorsement might be the BEST THINK FOR HILLARY. If it goes unchallenged by big mouths like Nancy Pelosi and Chris Mathews, that Richardson, a super delegate has voted against the popular vote of his state, THEN... it will opens the door for other super delegates to vote contrary to pop vote and support clinton at the convention. It would be tough for people like Pelosi, Mathews, etc... to argue at that time that super delegates are-- "overthrowing the election" , if they're not screaming about it now with Richardson, Kennedy and Kerry. GO HILLARY!

Who said that supers should follow their state? You are aware, of course, that if supers were to follow their state, that Obama would win that vote?

Supers should not overturn the will of the voters. That is what has been said. At the end of the election cycle, whoever has the most pledged delegates -- that is the person that represents the will of the voters.

Sorry if you don't like it, but that's the facts. If the supers overturn the pledged delegate winner, the Dems will lose the general election.

Governor RIchardson, first I would like to say how sorry I am for the gross lack of respect toward you in too many of the comments here. Second, I would like to express my own deep respect for the difficult decision you made, under enormous pressure, the time you took to make it and, ultimately, the strength you showed in following your conscience. It was a joy to see your freedom as your walked out in your khakis, blue blazer and checkered shirt, with the smile on your (as you said) bearded face; as you moved us with your honesty, openness and, in my opinion, bravery. It was a powerful speech. Thank you for your excellent service so far, for being an example of loyalty to past friends, your country and the people in it. I believe your endorsement holds great meaning to all of us, as well as having the added benefit of being able to help to heal so many who have endured less than respectful treatment, themselves, for an intolerably long time.

I didn't say Obama listens to the good Rev. and makes decisions, the point is, where were all those good CATHOLIC politicians, sitting in church listening to their Priests, while they all knew about the molestations that were going around. I mean get a clue pal, most people show up in church, sing, pray, listen to the pastors, bishops, priests, etc., and then go home and do what their going to do anyway. So, it's pretty hypritical for people to condem someone who happens to be half black and half white for going to church and listening to their pastor rail about in equality within the Black community and minority communites, which by the way a good many people who were around during the 50's 60's 70's etc., realized that having a separate drinking fountain for another race was pretty low. But then there are still those red necks around who still believe that. Stick to listening to Rush Limbaurger and let the rest the country move on.

Hillary won New Mexico, so shouldn't Richardson vote for Hillary???
Obviously the superdelegates are going to vote for who ever they please.

Hillary does have a chance to win the nomination. NEITHER CANDIDATE WILL HAVE THE REQUIRED AMOUNT OF DELEGATES NEEDED. The superdelegates will decide this nomination unless Obama will agree upon MI & FL being counted and the method that will be used.
I find it interesting that Obama helped co-sponser a bill for mail-in ballots to be used in elections and now he is worried about the security of mail-in ballots. OBAMA IS A HYPOCRITE!
The Democratic party needs to win Mich. in Nov. to win the General Election. The Democrats in Mich. are less likely to vote in Nov. if they do not get to pick the nominee.

Gov. Richardson.....what was really meant is it's the only value you had to HER. Just her way of letting you know what she wanted from you.

Mr. Richardson is just kiss the arses of the old White Haired Trolls in the DC Democratic Boys Club. Some of them, like Daschel and Bradley don't know enough to pack it in and go home. Obama is their Viagra. They aren't even players anymore - they are puppetteers.

Richardson kisses the boys arses. It's pretty pathetic. So is his ridiculous beard.

Loyalty is in part what is wrong with this country. Cronyism is an ugly thing, and only values loyalty over competence. We have seen this with the Bush administration so many times; I don"t think I need to tell you the results of that.

Bush has a lot of loyal friends. In fact, like Hillary, he insulates himself from everyone else. Some people put the good of their country above personal loyalty, but as a Hillary supporter, it is obvious that you can't understand that.

Greetings,
To me, this race is quite depressing. I really used to like the Clintons. Bill had an office right up the street from me when I lived in Harlem. I voted for him, and appreciate his presidency. Outside of the war vote, I think Hillary has been a great Senator. I know politics is dirty business, but the Clintons have shown that there is no limit as to how far they will go to win. This character element is REALLY eroding my appreciation for them. A cleaner race would have been so refreshing. Same outcome... no bloody, Democratic, circular firing squad.
I really ignored him at first, but along with his message, Barack Obama had shown a level of class, cool and dignity under pressure that I would LOVE to see in our next president.

Clintons....
Thank you for the past..... until this race, I loved you.... Good luck...
But I am voting Obama this time.

Obama is a candidate that wants the people to have their voices heard and their votes counted....not just the Supers.....THE people. Oh....wait....unless of course you are talking about about Michigan and Florida. There...the delegate count is good....and the people should shut up and sit down. Bill Richardson is a Super.....let's count him. He voted the way his State voted because after all, Obama says that is the FAIR way it should be done.....Oh wait.......New Mexico went to Clinton, my bad......maybe Richardson is making a career move........No, Richardson IS making a career move. He just threw New Mexico under that bus he has been talking about.

The good people of Michigan and Florida need to have a long discussion with their election officials who moved their primary dates up in violation of the rules, even though they knew their delegations would not be seated.

The good people of Michigan and Florida will have a chance to have their say in November. And maybe, just maybe, these two states will have learned by the next election cycle that jumping the gun isn't the best strategy when you are trying to make your state count more in the primary process.

But don't you find it ironic that they were given the opportunity to vote, and the only one that said "NO" was the Obama campaign? The very one that says he wants every voice heard and voice counted? Now that they are given the opportunity....he only the delegates split up. You talk about double speak...he is no better than the politicians he proclaims to be different than.

Superdelegates should not overturn the will of the voters. The will of the voters is evident in the pledged delegate count. This is what Obama has stood for.

MI and FL were never going to count. Thank the DNC for that -- it's not Obama's doing.

As soon as you folks stop trying to make it up as you go along, maybe you will understand the truth of the matter. Richardson certainly gets it, and I applaud him.
