PORTLAND, Ore. — Bill Richardson, the nation's only Hispanic governor, threw his support behind Barack Obama for president Friday, delivering one of the most coveted and tightly held endorsements in the race for the Democratic nomination.

The New Mexico governor joined Obama at spirited rally Friday and said the Illinois senator demonstrated his leadership abilities this week with his speech on race. "You are a once-in-a-lifetime leader," the governor said from the stage. "Above all, you will be a president who brings this nation together."

Richardson dropped his own bid for the nomination in January. His support for Obama comes during a tough period for the senator, the leader in the delegate chase over Hillary Rodham Clinton. Obama has seen his lead in national polls wither as he's grappled with the fallout from divisive remarks by his former pastor.

Richardson was relentlessly courted by both candidates and his support for Obama represents a potential counterweight to Clinton's strength among Hispanic voters.

As a Democratic superdelegate, the governor plays a part in the tight race for nominating votes and could bring other superdelegates to Obama's side. He also had been mentioned as a potential running mate for either candidate.

No primaries are scheduled until Pennsylvania's on April 22, a gap Obama hopes to use for such announcements to assert that he is the front-runner for the nomination. Oregon hold its primary May 20.

Richardson backed Obama despite his ties to Clinton and her husband, the former president. Richardson served as ambassador to the U.N. and as secretary of the Energy Department during the Clinton administration. Last month, Richardson and former President Clinton watched the Super Bowl together at the governor's residence in Santa Fe.

Richardson praised Hillary Clinton as a "distinguished leader with vast experience." But the governor said Obama "will be a historic and great president, who can bring us the change we so desperately need by bringing us together as a nation here at home and with our allies abroad."

Story continues below

The Clinton campaign was publicly dismissive of the endorsement, after the New York senator failed to win it for herself.

Citing Clinton's victory in New Mexico in February, senior strategist Mark Penn said, "Perhaps the time when he could have been most effective has long since past."

Richardson was a roving diplomatic troubleshooter when he was a congressman from New Mexico, negotiating the release of U.S. hostages in several countries and meeting with a rogue's gallery of U.S. adversaries, including Saddam Hussein and Fidel Castro.

"There is no doubt in my mind that Barack Obama has the judgment and courage we need in a commander in chief when our nation's security is on the line," Richardson said. "He showed this judgment by opposing the Iraq war from the start, and he has shown it during this campaign by standing up for a new era in American leadership internationally."

Obama embraced the endorsement of an accomplished figure on the world stage who "understands the importance of restoring diplomacy as a central part of our national security strategy."

Both men have proposed negotiating with enemies as well as friends, while Clinton has emphasized the need to press for changes in repressive or hostile regimes before engaging with them at the presidential level.

But there were also personal aspects to Richardson's swing behind Obama. He noted that both are the sons of one foreign-born parent _ Obama's father was from Kenya, Richardson's mother was from Mexico.

And Richardson told of the time, during one of the many Democratic debates, when his attention wandered and he didn't hear the question that came at him. Obama, then his rival, bailed him out by whispering to him that it was about Hurricane Katrina.

"He could have thrown me under the bus," Richardson cracked, "but he stood behind me."

Among veterans of the once-crowded field of Democratic presidential hopefuls, Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut is the only other one who has taken a side so far. Dodd also endorsed Obama.

John Edwards, the strongest performer among the nomination dropouts, has also been wooed by Clinton and Obama but he's not announced an endorsement.

GREAT LIES BY NOT SO GREAT POLITICAL LEADERS:

BUSH: "I'm a uniter, not a divider."

OBAMA: "This election is not about race."

BUSH: "Read my lips, no new taxes."

OBAMA: "I am not an affirmative action candidate."

Do I detect some sour grapes................?

To compare Bush to Senator Obama is ridiculous in its thought process.

Senator Obama is actually an educated man
Bush is not

Senator Obama is where he is because of his own hard work.
Bush is where he is because of his father name.

Now your comments are sounding very childish....

Come back when you are ready to have a real discussion

BILL RICHARDSON:

"I endorse Obama now because..."

*** "I'm bitchy and queeny and pissy at the Clintons for not saying I'm special."
*** "I need attention, and lots of it. Why? I used to be hot, and I've done everything."
*** "Don't I look hot now with my super tan bronzer and my super hot beard?"
*** "Do I still look fat?"
*** "I'm Hispanic, did I mention that? Wouldn't it be neato if I were VP?"
*** "Please Mr. Obama, make me your VP. We will be super racist together!"
*** "I'm shocked, absolutely SHOCKED, that people are racist."
*** "Did I mention I was Hispanic? Do I get a gold star?"
*** "Race has absolutely nothing to do with this. By the way, I'm Hispanic."

Is it possible that Gov Richardson made his decision to support Sen Obama because he sees the potential danger in prolonging this race. I'm sure it was difficult for him, but as a leader he's thinking about what's best for the party. Remember, this election is not about Richardson's loyality to the Clintons. His loyality should always remain with the good of the country!

As a former admirer of President Clinton and Senator Clinton, the 'kitchen sink' strategy of the senator's campaign has been very disappointing. States that Mrs. Clinton has lost have been deemed unimportant, and endorsements not received are considered irrelevant...
It's time for Democrats to realize that if the Clintons have their way, our party will be in ruins by the convention. They have never been overly troubled by their party's pain or division; their only measure of success has been whether they 'win', regardless of what it means to our party. 'Last One Standing' politics for much longer will deliver the election to Mr. McCain.
Also, if the supposedly anti-Clinton media were serious about fairness, they would demand the release of the Clinton Library donors list. As someone from Chicago who is familiar with Tony Rezko and his habit of donating to Democrats and their causes, I'm willing to bet that a reason for the Clinton's refusal to release the list is because Mr. Rezko's name is on it.

What's the point of the Clintons bashing the most popular, best known Hispanic in elected office in America? This is the super pol idea of how to win friends and influence people? Are they just totally out of control?

Stop attacking the Clintons. They have never bashed him. Stop being delerious.

That is what the Clintons do....demean those who don't support them...

The Caucus States
The High Profile Endorsements
Southern States

Richardson's Endorsement is important because of his friendship with the Clintons and; unlike the Bush Administration who surrounds himself with people who will never disagree with him Richardson appears to be a man of integrity...

He is doing what is in the best interest of America and not what's in the best interest of the Clintons......

Penn is the lead staffer of her campaign. He said Richardson's endorsement doesn't count. If Hillary has ever disagreed with any of his pronouncements, she hasn't said so, and she hasn't taken action to either muzzle or remove him. Therefore, Penn's words are Hillary's words. Like it or not, it's the way it is.

I think "Judas" is pretty much an "attack", don't you? So is saying "he doesn't matter anyway, he's just a former minion of my husband"...

You Hillaristas are SO delusional! It's like you've been issued special goggles to see only through the filter of Clintonian alternative reality.

they did not bash richardson. but of course everything the clinton campaign say you try to put in a negative light. sorry, obam's campaign has done this so much, that it isn't going to work anymore. they did this with race. look get it straight, clinton won all the big states with electoral votes, she is going to win pennsylvania. obama won red states, please give me a break. obama can't win the general election. he won't carry pa and i don't think he will carry florida or ohio. do you want to lose the election. obama and his camp say the will win independents and republicans, sorry, not anymore.

I find it humorous that anyone would think Richardson should endorse Clinton due to some kind of 'loyalty'. I expect our leaders to use their minds, use their critical thinking skills, and endorse the best candidate for President. Anything less would be reprehensible. The obsolete politics of yesterday puts loyalty above truth.

And now we have Carville comparing Richardson's endorsement of Obama to Judas:

[“An act of betrayal,” said James Carville, an adviser to Mrs. Clinton and a friend of Mr. Clinton.

“Mr. Richardson’s endorsement came right around the anniversary of the day when Judas sold out for 30 pieces of silver, so I think the timing is appropriate, if ironic,” Mr. Carville said, referring to Holy Week.]

James Carville also needs to go away, go join his Cheney-loving wife Mary Matalin in obscurity.

and just exactly did the clintons do to the blacks in s carolina. the blacks vote in a block for obama, because he is black, no other reason. take out the black vote and you can see where he stands. i read an article about the election. this reporter went to harrisburg pa and spoke to people there. there was this one man that said if hillary didn't get the nomination, he would vote for mccain. he also said that it would be the first time he ever voted for a republican. obama supporters, get this straight, i feel just like that man. do you know how many people there are out there that feel like that. i do (many). so tell the blacks that there not alone if obama doesn't win. obama threatened us, (the people that voted for me won't vote for hillary, but the people that vote for hillary will vote for me". he's wrong. this is a two way street.

OK, time for something more than ranking out and taking sides. We have a problem here.
In order for us to MOVE FORWARD AND BE GREAT AGAIN (because divided we fall)- we need something more than bickering and bloating. No other candidate has made so monumental an effort to piece America together as Barack Obama. I don't see McCain even trying or caring anymore (except to get his ear piece fitted by Lieberman).

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:23 PM on 03/22/2008

OK, McCain just went to Iraq; I can't take that from him. However, he really doesn't come off savvy enough on any number of national issues outside of security to roll up his sleeves and get dirty. He doesn't even appear healthy.

McCain went to Iraq (and Israel as well) and while there demonstrated his lack of knowledge and understanding of the players involved in the Middle East.
If Lieberman weren't the ventriloquist, McCain would have no voice at all.

Every process has its cycles.

So does politics.

The gladiator philosophy --- kill or be killed -- is not going to work this time, that is NOT what we need now !!!!

True, Clintons are so good at it but this philosophy would have worked four years ago and they would have had my vote for sure.

Keep up people ! Shake it off ! Otherwise nothing will be done!

Barack is the only one who can unite us !

"Citing Clinton's victory in New Mexico in February, senior strategist Mark Penn said, "Perhaps the time when he could have been most effective has long since past."

This comment says a lot about Hillary Clinton and the kind of people she would have in her administration. There is no way in hell anyone with a brain would want these cretins back in the White House.

Excellent post.

Mark Penn has insulted Gov. Richardson by suggesting his only value is influence in the Latino communities (they are no more monolithic than any group lumped together for shorthand purposes). In the race for the Democratic nomination, Gov. Richardson was definitely the candidate with the best resume - Congress, Cabinet, executive experience as governor, international negotiator. A rock star. Despite my enthusiasm for Obama, I was always regretful the Gov.'s campaign did not get off the ground.

Apart from the gratuitously bad manners Penn exhibited, he also showed short-sighted stupidity. If Clinton somehow does win the nomination, her dissing of Gov. Richardson will not go down well with Latino voters, especially since John McCain does have an acceptable position on immigration.

Clinton has by now insulted so many different groups (because they are simply too benighted to appreciate her) that there's hardly anyone left to vote for her in a general election. Super delegates take note.

In politics if you are associated with a candidate that eventually loses, your clout goes down. Most people hold their support until they think they now who the winner is. That also reduces the risk of fall out from the person who ends up losing. Nothing has changed in what either candidate said and both are equally evasive in speaking about any issues. It's all what's in it for me
