PORTLAND, Ore. — Bill Richardson, the nation's only Hispanic governor, threw his support behind Barack Obama for president Friday, delivering one of the most coveted and tightly held endorsements in the race for the Democratic nomination.

The New Mexico governor joined Obama at spirited rally Friday and said the Illinois senator demonstrated his leadership abilities this week with his speech on race. "You are a once-in-a-lifetime leader," the governor said from the stage. "Above all, you will be a president who brings this nation together."

Richardson dropped his own bid for the nomination in January. His support for Obama comes during a tough period for the senator, the leader in the delegate chase over Hillary Rodham Clinton. Obama has seen his lead in national polls wither as he's grappled with the fallout from divisive remarks by his former pastor.

Richardson was relentlessly courted by both candidates and his support for Obama represents a potential counterweight to Clinton's strength among Hispanic voters.

As a Democratic superdelegate, the governor plays a part in the tight race for nominating votes and could bring other superdelegates to Obama's side. He also had been mentioned as a potential running mate for either candidate.

No primaries are scheduled until Pennsylvania's on April 22, a gap Obama hopes to use for such announcements to assert that he is the front-runner for the nomination. Oregon hold its primary May 20.

Richardson backed Obama despite his ties to Clinton and her husband, the former president. Richardson served as ambassador to the U.N. and as secretary of the Energy Department during the Clinton administration. Last month, Richardson and former President Clinton watched the Super Bowl together at the governor's residence in Santa Fe.

Richardson praised Hillary Clinton as a "distinguished leader with vast experience." But the governor said Obama "will be a historic and great president, who can bring us the change we so desperately need by bringing us together as a nation here at home and with our allies abroad."

The Clinton campaign was publicly dismissive of the endorsement, after the New York senator failed to win it for herself.

Citing Clinton's victory in New Mexico in February, senior strategist Mark Penn said, "Perhaps the time when he could have been most effective has long since past."

Richardson was a roving diplomatic troubleshooter when he was a congressman from New Mexico, negotiating the release of U.S. hostages in several countries and meeting with a rogue's gallery of U.S. adversaries, including Saddam Hussein and Fidel Castro.

"There is no doubt in my mind that Barack Obama has the judgment and courage we need in a commander in chief when our nation's security is on the line," Richardson said. "He showed this judgment by opposing the Iraq war from the start, and he has shown it during this campaign by standing up for a new era in American leadership internationally."

Obama embraced the endorsement of an accomplished figure on the world stage who "understands the importance of restoring diplomacy as a central part of our national security strategy."

Both men have proposed negotiating with enemies as well as friends, while Clinton has emphasized the need to press for changes in repressive or hostile regimes before engaging with them at the presidential level.

But there were also personal aspects to Richardson's swing behind Obama. He noted that both are the sons of one foreign-born parent _ Obama's father was from Kenya, Richardson's mother was from Mexico.

And Richardson told of the time, during one of the many Democratic debates, when his attention wandered and he didn't hear the question that came at him. Obama, then his rival, bailed him out by whispering to him that it was about Hurricane Katrina.

"He could have thrown me under the bus," Richardson cracked, "but he stood behind me."

Among veterans of the once-crowded field of Democratic presidential hopefuls, Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut is the only other one who has taken a side so far. Dodd also endorsed Obama.

John Edwards, the strongest performer among the nomination dropouts, has also been wooed by Clinton and Obama but he's not announced an endorsement.

cool, only 300 posts to get approved ahead of mine. i will post then come back in 7 hours, heh.
all this clinton buildup of mccain is simple triangulation which clintons are famous for. hillary knows she will not get the nomination this time around so what better than old man mccain to win and serve his 4 years and bingo hillary is back on the campaign trail for 2012. if obama wins the general elec. she would conceivably have to wait anywhere from 8 to 16 years depending on how we view his pick for vp and of course the performance of both.
it aint rocket science and you dont have to have a crystal ball to see the obvious.

Remember your only a wonderful person if you stay on Bill and Hillary's side, if you don't then your a piece of navel lint. Sad that this former President and his wife are so full of lust for power they will trash anyone in their way. Richardson obviously is someone who thought this out and made a hard decision. When was the last time a politician did something because they thought it was "best for the country" instead of best for their own gain?

Yes, she squeaked a win there. But he had made a campaign promise of getting out of Iraq, and that alone makes him in alignment with Obama. Maybe the super delegates will decide the winner by simply picking who they feel is the better person, rather than the entitled one.

So America has thousands, if not millions, of unsold empty foreclosed housing. And because of the horror of W, there are millions of Iraq war refugees. Now, what can be done here? How do we pay for some of the war crimes?

You Hillary supporters are such a flip floppers. When the SD were going your way, you said no the SD should vote their consciousness. When they started to turn their backs on you, now you want them to vote their constituency.
Let me tell you this, if they votes according to who won in their state. Obama will ahead in SD by now.

So any way you slice it, Obama is ahead.

Says a lot about the Clinton Campaign when they to go out of their way to diminish the value of a man with the real world Foreign and Domestic Policy experience of Bill Richardson to his mere demographic profile.

Maybe that is the problem with Hillary's claims of experience ... she can't even recognize experience when she sees it.

Pretty insulting of you ask me.

I guess "birds of a feather flock together"! All of you Clinton "sore losers" are just following the antics of your wonderful leader! Loyalty is a good thing but we have all seen what loyalty in the Bush administration (Gonzalez) did to the country and the American people. I, for one, don't ever want another leader like him in charge again. Hillary is very much a "my way or the highway" person and I am sick to death of those types. She will attempt anything to win at any cost even to her own reputation. The best MAN always wins.........we are ready for a woman president, just not this particular woman. She reminds me of everything that I detest in some women....self-serving, whining, not fair but don't f*** with me, playing the weaker sex when it suits and being a b*t** in general. From one woman to another, get out now Hillary while you can still salvage a small bit of your dignity. One of the things that I have noticed is that Obamanuts feel the need to spew hatred for Hillary. Berating her does not elevate the qualities of your candidate. You all have the same response to criticism: criticise Hillary in such venomout comments, say what Obama has done isn't as bad as....., and make excuses for Obama's statements and behaviour. It sounds like you can't defend him on his merits

Richardson's explanations for endorsing Obama are weak at best. Change being the main theme for the Obama campaign seems to be getting the attention of the American people but are they mostly young people or old. The November election may come down to how the older Americans vote as opposed to the Young. Should Obama be the Democratic nominee McCain may have a better than 50% chance of winning since for most older Americans the idea of change may be difficult for them to accept. They would much prefer the status quo...What many Americans may not realize is that Change in our political system and the way of doing things and coming together as one America will not come easy or come at all. If Congress and its political machine have their way, as they mostly do, don't expect to see any change at all. One man or woman may will not make a difference and as it looks now either candidate for President will most likely split this country in half so the majority support of the American people will not be there for either one. Overall this coming election does not seem to give the American people much of a choice...there is no one strong candidate that can put it all together and with the many problems facing our Nation we may be in for an uphill battle for the next four years. Obama at the present time seems to many to be the Savior we have all been waiting for but the realty is that this country is going thru another ethnic change and as immigrants forged ahead 100 years ago to build this Nation it is not the same today. America has reached it peak most likely after WWII and maybe a decade beyond. We look at our Nation today and do not see a very bright future. Can the next President make a difference....very doubtful

That is why Clinton should step aside, and support Obama. Her public and extremely divisive offer to him of accepting the vice presidency was a great mistake., revealing arrogance and a touch of cruelty. I understand she has suffered, but the Clintons had their eight years.
Charles, you are a pessimist - maybe you prefer to view yourself as a realist.
Richardson was brave. However, there is deafening silence from Pelosi, Edwards and Gore. I don't think it is wise to retreat in battle. They should stand for something for the sake of the Democrats.

Charlesthetenth, I hope you can find some optimism in this challenging time. Here's something to be optimistic about.

Energy will be the next boom for America. Just like computers in the 80s, which showed their efficiency in the 90s economic boom, new energy sources and devices will be the technological boom in the coming years that will again make America great. There is a whole world in need of improved energy technology. That is one of Obama's strongest suits.

Austin, TX mayor Will Wynn chairs the Energy Committee of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and worked on energy-efficiency grant legislation. "For too long, we've allowed old divisions to hold us back," Wynn said. "Recently, I've had conversations about energy policy with presidential candidates from both parties, and I believe Sen. Obama is the only person who can move us forward on this critical issue."

A new day begins after the Richardson endorsement, and Obama will attract more interest and enthusiasm as an electable, humanitarian uniter not racist divider. I don't see Rev. Wright and Obama as the same person just as I extract what I personally agree with from my zionist rabbi's fervent sermons. The big picture is that Obama is unflappable, distinguished, sane- and will probably go down as one of the best mentors of all time. HE IS MORE THAN ELECTABLE.
HE IS A NATIONAL TREASURE.

LOL....

You know, I think the DNC has no idea what it's doing.

t looks to me like the DNC has decided that Obama must be the nominee--largely for fear of alienating his core: young people, blacks, and the upper-class white liberals that are the movers and shakers in the party.

I suspect they think an Obama candidacy, whether he wins or loses, will help the Democratic "brand" with younger voters and hurt the GOP for decades, which by November will be perceived as just as racist as the new Co-Grand Dragons of the KKK: Bill and Hillary Clinton.

But the problem is that this is actually taking the party "brand" back to the old white, liberal elite + blacks. They will alienate the Blue Dogs, who tipped the 2006 election their way. They cannot win with the old Carter-Mondale-Dukakis coalition. With Obama as the nominee, battering McCain and the GOP with race as he has the Clintons, white swing voters will swing hard for the GOP and probably stay there if the GOP remodels itself as a more centrist party under McCain.

And an awful lot of young white people aren't post-racism uber-liberals--Lots are working class lunchpail dems (or suburban conservatives) with the same level of "white resentment" that their parents have. Republicans played that resentment with Reagan and Bush II and won. We can bet McCain will do the same.

In short, the DNC thinks it's making a bold move to shore up the party's reputation for a generation, win or lose. But as usual, they're about to be done in by their own classist shortsightedness and hand the GOP an amazing victory and rebuilding opportunity while they take a giant step backward and re-brand the Democrats as the party of the "liberal elite." Those of us who've lived long enough know exactly how successful that brand is in national elections.

It's not the DNC that is deciding Obama is the nominee. It's the voters. He's won the most states, the most delegates, the most votes. That's called democracy in action. The lunch pail crowd would have to be as dumb as you assign them to be to think that a candidate, such as Hillary or McCain, who voted to invade and occupy Iraq at such a huge financial cost to the taxpayer, who supported tax benefits to the super wealthy and corporations, who supported NAFTA, who are obliged to special interests and big corporations, would have the interests of the working class at heart. Obama is going to win the nomination and the general election. McCain is a goofy old man. He can't beat Obama.

i knew this one was coming...oh, dear children you are too young (yet legally old enough to die for this country) to know what you want. obama isn't bad, he's just not mccain or hillary. so, don't vote for him. get a grip. i am so proud of our young voters. THEY have a brain and THEY are using it...what's your excuse?

Perhaps you aren't aware of how the demographics are defying all odds more and more after each primary-

American idol? Yikes.
let's see, Dick Cheney and George Bush were more "mature" (Old) and "experienced" (VERY Old). What a profoundly idiotic statement. YOU wont allow the younger generations to voice their concerns about the future of this country and where it's headed? YOU have the AUDACITY to try and equate participation in in the future of America with a terrorist act like "Hijacking"! Who the HELL gave YOU the power to take away my right to make this country a better place? If anything, people like YOU, the selfish and fearful masses trying to hold on to the past as hard as they can, wildly raging against the reality that the world is changing all around them, YOU are the ones who have forgotten just how serious this moment in American history is. YOU should feel utter shame for what you've said here.

The most mature people in the last 2 elections voted for George W. Bush. Get off your high horse. Voters share the blame for the problems America is in as much as the current administration. Everyone outside the US could see Bush for the brainless, quick draw cowboy he was, but Americans voted for him anyway. After 4 years of fail, Americans gave him four more years, I'm guessing, just to find out how truly bad it could all get. Americans may not believe this, they might think that they owe the world nothing for the last 8 years, but they owe quite a bit to the international community.

Young voters get it, so do educated voters seeing as Obama gets the vast majority their vote as well. What do you know, Obama's duping the educated voters, while Hillary's demographic, the uneducated voter, see right through his schemes.

"Obama is trying to manipulate his way into the White House to pay white people back for what he ... believe were/are injustices to blacks. All 3 of them are unpatriotic"

"Obama isn't a bad person.... but to his young supporters......this is not American idol!"

You are contradicting yourself, what statement do you really believe?

As for the American Idol dig, I have heard young people I work with say they wouldn't vote for Obama because his wife pronounced ask as ax. Now these people obviously thought they were voting for American Idol, however they voted for Clinton. Now I wouldn’t be surprised if some Obama supporters were that shallow, though I am equally sure that only some Clinton supporters are.

Personally I based my choice at the start of this primary on issues like their stance on the war authorization. As the primary has proceeded some things have made me question my support, appearing with McClurkin, his vote for the Peru Free Trade Agreement, and most recently the “NAFTA memo” from Canada.

The NAFTA memo turned out to be false (it wrongly said that Obama’s campaign called the embassy when the opposite was true and it misrepresented the content of the conversation according to those involved), Clinton also voted for the PFTA, and Clinton voted for the Defense of Marriage act. So while all of these things made me question my support for Obama none of them made me consider supporting Clinton over him, since she is at least as bad or debatably worse on every issue.

I truly believe that Clinton isn’t a bad person. I volunteered for both of her Senate campaigns. However like all politicians I haven’t agreed with everything she has done. The same is true of Obama, I disagree with him less though. In the general I would never support McCain over any of the Democrats and I say this as someone who is proudly not a Democrat.

Frankly if you are trying to convince anyone your ad-homonym attacks on Obama through your caricatures of his supporters will not work, even if you can make your narrative consistant.

Richardson was my original choice because of his experience and proven quality. He got results. My faith in his judgment has been validated again now.

But while he would be an excellent vice-president, I would prefer to see him as Sec. of State. He could serve us well in that capacity, strengthening our ties with Latin America, establishing better relations in the Middle East, and bringing sanity to our diplomatic efforts in general.

Wherever he serves, he will be an asset. And for the cynics here who have been saying that this was for him to get a job, that shows how little you know of what has been going on. He could have had such a deal from Clinton, but didn't take it. In fact, I have enough trust in both of the Democratic candidates to believe either would have wanted him, endorsement or no. The only thing this does is make it unlikely that he would get a job with Clinton who has a history of preferring personal loyalty to herself over any capacity to do a good job.

It has been long obvious that Richardson saw Obama as the better candidate.

Gov. Richardson recognizes a "uniter" and one who possesses tangible Presidential type leadership, judgment, wisdom and intellect when he sees it. I applaud him for listening to his heart as well.

And I think that Sen. Obama probably also recognizes a true diplomat, "uniter", and strong political leadership, talent, and intellect in Gov. Richardson when he sees it as well.

Just my observation and opinion- but there is a ton of talent, tangible leadership skills, diplomatic skills, interpersonal skills, and a national unifying force in both of these individuals, Obama and Richardson. Hmmh.

"Uniter" my ass. I have never seen the Democratic party more divided, and I shudder to think what the country is going to be like as the general campaign swings into high gear this summer. It's going to be a long, hot one.

Do you read your post after you enter it, perhaps you should before you click on the "Post Comment " box.

Is this what we have to look forward in a Hillary Clinton Presidency, constant fear mongering? My friend that is what her campaign has been for a good while now, and the country is sick of this, we have had enough.

Richardson is just vying for another gov't post...why do you think he waited so long-polls. Obama may win the nomination, but Bill is not going to help w/ the Hispanic vote. Believe me black vote and Hispanic vote are like oil and water.

flyguy what do you know??? If he had endorse hillary you would be on here celebrating. We believe you, stop listening to the media. What do you really know about the black and hispanic vote? A vote is a vote, no matter what color or race the person. One thing that is for sure is that hillary will not have enough. Richardson's endorsement matters now because he is one of the democratic party leaders . Now that hillary has denounced his endorement as being nothing, he is going to do everything he can to lure more superdelegates and surely put the nail in her coffin. Obama '08

flyguy - you are still living in the past. You try to divide Hispanic and Blacks but it will not work. That is why we have Obama that will try his best to unite the divide and you have Clinton that will divide, cheat, and lie to get the nomination. What a serve serving MONSTER!!

Please.
The Clinton's probably offered Richardson his hearts desire. They would have given him anything to get his endorsement. C'mon! Richardson is a prominent Hispanic, a well liked politician, and has name recognition throughout the country! The Clintons are shitting themselves over this loss.
