PORTLAND, Ore. — Bill Richardson, the nation's only Hispanic governor, threw his support behind Barack Obama for president Friday, delivering one of the most coveted and tightly held endorsements in the race for the Democratic nomination.

The New Mexico governor joined Obama at spirited rally Friday and said the Illinois senator demonstrated his leadership abilities this week with his speech on race. "You are a once-in-a-lifetime leader," the governor said from the stage. "Above all, you will be a president who brings this nation together."

Richardson dropped his own bid for the nomination in January. His support for Obama comes during a tough period for the senator, the leader in the delegate chase over Hillary Rodham Clinton. Obama has seen his lead in national polls wither as he's grappled with the fallout from divisive remarks by his former pastor.

Richardson was relentlessly courted by both candidates and his support for Obama represents a potential counterweight to Clinton's strength among Hispanic voters.

As a Democratic superdelegate, the governor plays a part in the tight race for nominating votes and could bring other superdelegates to Obama's side. He also had been mentioned as a potential running mate for either candidate.

No primaries are scheduled until Pennsylvania's on April 22, a gap Obama hopes to use for such announcements to assert that he is the front-runner for the nomination. Oregon hold its primary May 20.

Richardson backed Obama despite his ties to Clinton and her husband, the former president. Richardson served as ambassador to the U.N. and as secretary of the Energy Department during the Clinton administration. Last month, Richardson and former President Clinton watched the Super Bowl together at the governor's residence in Santa Fe.

Richardson praised Hillary Clinton as a "distinguished leader with vast experience." But the governor said Obama "will be a historic and great president, who can bring us the change we so desperately need by bringing us together as a nation here at home and with our allies abroad."

The Clinton campaign was publicly dismissive of the endorsement, after the New York senator failed to win it for herself.

Citing Clinton's victory in New Mexico in February, senior strategist Mark Penn said, "Perhaps the time when he could have been most effective has long since past."

Richardson was a roving diplomatic troubleshooter when he was a congressman from New Mexico, negotiating the release of U.S. hostages in several countries and meeting with a rogue's gallery of U.S. adversaries, including Saddam Hussein and Fidel Castro.

"There is no doubt in my mind that Barack Obama has the judgment and courage we need in a commander in chief when our nation's security is on the line," Richardson said. "He showed this judgment by opposing the Iraq war from the start, and he has shown it during this campaign by standing up for a new era in American leadership internationally."

Obama embraced the endorsement of an accomplished figure on the world stage who "understands the importance of restoring diplomacy as a central part of our national security strategy."

Both men have proposed negotiating with enemies as well as friends, while Clinton has emphasized the need to press for changes in repressive or hostile regimes before engaging with them at the presidential level.

But there were also personal aspects to Richardson's swing behind Obama. He noted that both are the sons of one foreign-born parent _ Obama's father was from Kenya, Richardson's mother was from Mexico.

And Richardson told of the time, during one of the many Democratic debates, when his attention wandered and he didn't hear the question that came at him. Obama, then his rival, bailed him out by whispering to him that it was about Hurricane Katrina.

"He could have thrown me under the bus," Richardson cracked, "but he stood behind me."

Among veterans of the once-crowded field of Democratic presidential hopefuls, Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut is the only other one who has taken a side so far. Dodd also endorsed Obama.

John Edwards, the strongest performer among the nomination dropouts, has also been wooed by Clinton and Obama but he's not announced an endorsement.

My respect for Bill Richardson has gone way up.

One of my fears about politicians is that they will appoint the people that they would like to do well instead of appointing the people who they think will do well. Richardson has shown that he can make that distinction!

I worry that distinction is completely foreign to the Hillary camp.

The idea that a Once-In-A--Lifetime leader should be chosen is hopelessly flawed and it bespeaks of the shallowness of Sen. Richardson's "political" intellect! History is strewn with "one-in-a-lifetime leaders who did extreme evil: Hiler, Stalin. Caligula, Ivan the Terrible, Genghis Khan, Nero, Goebbels, Bin Laden, to name a few! A reverse, of course is also true. History is filled with Abrahams, St. Francises, and John Paul II's! So, how do we discern, which is which? I will tell you how: we measure each leader, good or evil against Jesus Christ! Jesus is more that one-in-a-lifetime Leader: He Is One Of A Kind Archetype of Leadership! When we measure Sen. Obama against Jesus, we are troubled by his spiritual mentor, Mr. Wright! Mr. Wright has many good qualities, but many other that cause division ... not between good and bad, but between races and ethnic groups! This is a sign that Sen. Obama needs to do more explaining on his spiritual make-up before we jump to conclusion that he is a safe Once-In-A-Lifetime leader, Mr. Richardson!

It concerns me that Senator Obama scheduled this endorsement on Good Friday. I just heard that he is campaigning in Oregon on Holy Saturday. This is a special weekend for Christians and I would have hoped he would have respected that. Christians, at this time of the year, do not want to be distracted by someone's drive to be nominated.

The Reverend Wright has done far more for the poor and disenfranchised in his community that most of the bloggers on this post; he has also served his country in the armed services. How many of his detractors here can lay claim to either of these things? It is absurd to attack a man for a few soundbites (which do contain some truth, by the way). I suspect, were Jesus here today, he would NOT condemn Reverend Wright for some angry words but rather would celebrate all the fine work he has done. Jesus was often angry and rebellious himself.

I have the utmost respect for Reverend Wright. It amazes me the hate that he has received for stating the obvious. It is not he that is evil for speaking the truth. I won't go as far as to call you evil, but I will say that you are filled w/ hate and you need prayer.

Looking at the history of this country and how America rose to prominence, it has come from hateful individuals such as yourself. From individuals that had no problem establishing there on agendas by walking on the backs of so many other races, not similar in appearance to their own.

Lets look at the Mexicans and the Indians who knew and occupied this country well before we knew it to be established by caucasian Americans (I will give u a labeled extension as an American, like you do all other races). You bring blacks over on slave ships, to build this country, raping, torturing and demeaning to no end. We establish a foundation given to us by our enslavers (religiion). We own it and use it as a way in to survive and build our own culture to deal w/ the horrible injustices we face by our masters. We develope a bond w/ this religion thru our pain and suffering, heard in the songs that are sang in our churches to date.

It was men like the one you so easily denoucne that has done so much for people that look like me in this country. He spoke about what was wrong in this country. He spoke about how we are seen by other nations outside of this country. He spoke how arrogant our leaders are in taking advantage of other cultures just because we are America. He also spoke of the ignorance that lead to the thoughts that this country is never wrong. Those thoughts appear to be similar to your own.

I am curious What have you done for someone who doesn't look like Mr. Troubledgoodangel. Have you worked in poverished communities to assist those in need. I have you given those in need hope when there was none. Better yet that it bother you to see someone that looks like you order thousands of young people to go to another country kill tons of their citizens in the name of peace and call them insurgents.

This is what Mr. Wright was talking, and I do hope the chickens come home to roost!

Don't worry about it Governor.

If you would have endorsed Hillary she would have been saying how your endorsement was a turning point in her campaign and one of the most meaningful and creditable statements of support from a person with impeccable credentials. And she would have been attempting to drag you to every speaking event possible.

Remember, it is Hillary and Mark Penn, two of the sleaziest political operatives around who say and do anything to get what they want.

Hey here's somethin' for all you doubters out there who like to think they know Obama can't win in the General.

How is Obama/ Richardson going to lose New York, California, Florida, Texas, New Mexico, Illinois and then not carry Washington State, Oregon, Colorado, Minnesota, New jersey, Massachusets, Vermot, Maryland while their pulling 85-90% of the Black vote and at least 65-70% of the hispanic vote? Even if they only get 30% of the white vote they will carry all the above states for two reasons. Demographics and they are Democrats. Seriously Explain to me how Obama/ Richardson Loses New York, California, Florida, Texas and then don't carry enough of the rest to push them over the top? Those are the four biggest prizes. And their party affiliation locks in California and New York and their demographics lock em in Florida and Texas

James Carville said Richardson was taking the 30 pieces of silver. To James: HIllary Clinton is NOT Jesus Christ, and your statement on Good Friday is itself a betrayal of Christian values. Fundamentally, Jesus was for others, not for Himself. Hillary is the opposite.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:12 AM on 03/22/2008

I consider Carville to be a pretty smart guy, but that was not the most brilliant thing he has ever said.

It does show that this endorsement really hurt the Clinton's cause regardless of what they are saying to the American people. Do they really believe that everyone believes their BS, they should have tried honesty, the American people are sick of being lied too.

Good comments, Georgiadude.

If Governor Richardson had endorsed Senator Clinton, I am quite sure they would see him as brilliant beyond words. However, he chose to endorse another so , in their eyes, his endorsement was based upon his greed. Kind of like a sullen child crying out, "Fine! If you want to play with Barack instead of me, you just aren't any good and I don't need you anyway"! Neither honest nor presidential!

Gov. R happens to be a pretty bright man, and as a former member of the Clinton administration I'm sure he knows better than most just how far the long arms of the Clinton power machine can reach out against dissenters. And yet, he chose to endorse Senator Obama and did so with a very powerful speech. Perhaps, like the rest of America and per your comment above, he appreciated honesty for a change!

I like Carville.... but just when you think Sen. Clinton's supporters have had enough rotten things to say, up pops another head-shaking soundbite. I guess I expect stuff like that from Mark Penn ("Richardson's time has long since past"), but geez, James...that wasn't witty - that was just bad taste at a bad time.

James Carville's time and methods are past. His 'war room' strategies are of interest in the historical sense, but his sour, abusive tongue has small place in today's public discourse.

It really is possible to get beyond the back and forth and the "two sides" that the msm and cable pundits CREATE. The "Crossfire" that was created by cable and msm confines discussion to nasty sound bites that leave little but hateful images. Surely we the public will tire of the Carville's and the Buchanans.

Obama will not win another primary. Hillary is down by 600k popular vote. Puerto Rico alone will give her that. What about PA, IN and NC? Clinton will win the popular vote and be within, 70 pledged.

That doesn't include FL and MI.

America relax, sanity will take hold. (FYI, all hispanics aren't Mexican.)

How does Obama "unite" us? He is a great speaker but what has he done on the record to show he can unite us? Nothing I can see. His comments about ending the war and talking to terrorists shows he doesn't get it when it comes to world problems. His berating of big companies and pharmeceutical companies screams..."I want to destroy the very companies that pay big taxes and employs us". Not a sound plan to help the economy.

Richardson's endorsement is very significant on several fronts:

1. When one of his stature makes a move it signals to the other superdelegates that doing so is OK.

2. As one with extremely close ties to the Clintons, it signals more clearly what chances he thinks Hillary has.

3. Both his endorsement and the sterling manner in which presented it is challenging the SDs of higher stature to make their moves NOW to close the deal for Obama.

Hopefully, the floodgates will open.

Bill Richardson's endorsement should help quite a bit, picture in your mind if you will Obama giving an important speech with Chris Dodd and Bill Richardson backing him up, no doubt that would be a very powerful image, having two former presidential opponents at Obama's side. If another major candidate were to endorse Obama, I think it would essentially over for the Clintons. Actually on second thought, I believe his endorsement in itself is a potent catalyst to an Obama victory.

I bet Bill Clinton got an earful from Hillary for losing Richardson's endorsement, he is probably sleeping on the sofa again. It's not like Bill didn't try, he watched the Super Bowl with Richardson for Pete's sake. If I were Hillary, I would take easy on Bill C., he might run in off into the arms of another woman, what an awful situation. It would be especially horrible if she were to get the nomination and Bill decided it was time to take a break from it all and you know what, bimbo alert time.

I have been wondering who would want the veep job if Hillary were to win, in essence Bill would either be in charge or the 2nd person in charge, then the veep. Al Gore could probably shed some light on that scenario, I bet he was having second thoughts about taking the veep job when Hillary decided that she alone was going to bring universal health care to America.

Yeah this doesn't mean much for the average joe, but for the superdelegates it's a big deal. They see that a longtime loyal clinton advisor is going for Barack. This is total political calculation, he sees Barack has more money, a much better oiled political machine at work, than the Clintons. The super delegates don't think about endorsing someone based off who they want to be president. They look at who will help them to get elected easier. Right now Barack has all the money, Clinton is foot to mouth she will be far in the red by the time pennsylvainia's primaries come around.

And what, pray tell, does "typical White Person" mean? It seems that is a reference to the majority of white people in this country. I doubt if Sen. Obama knows what "White People" think, and to use that phrase is racist, oh but no it's only "whites" who can be racist.
Rev. Wright can't be a racist because he is black! Obama can't be using "race" to win this election.......it's the "typical whites" that us racism..
