PORTLAND, Ore. — Bill Richardson, the nation's only Hispanic governor, threw his support behind Barack Obama for president Friday, delivering one of the most coveted and tightly held endorsements in the race for the Democratic nomination.

The New Mexico governor joined Obama at spirited rally Friday and said the Illinois senator demonstrated his leadership abilities this week with his speech on race. "You are a once-in-a-lifetime leader," the governor said from the stage. "Above all, you will be a president who brings this nation together."

Richardson dropped his own bid for the nomination in January. His support for Obama comes during a tough period for the senator, the leader in the delegate chase over Hillary Rodham Clinton. Obama has seen his lead in national polls wither as he's grappled with the fallout from divisive remarks by his former pastor.

Richardson was relentlessly courted by both candidates and his support for Obama represents a potential counterweight to Clinton's strength among Hispanic voters.

As a Democratic superdelegate, the governor plays a part in the tight race for nominating votes and could bring other superdelegates to Obama's side. He also had been mentioned as a potential running mate for either candidate.

No primaries are scheduled until Pennsylvania's on April 22, a gap Obama hopes to use for such announcements to assert that he is the front-runner for the nomination. Oregon hold its primary May 20.

Richardson backed Obama despite his ties to Clinton and her husband, the former president. Richardson served as ambassador to the U.N. and as secretary of the Energy Department during the Clinton administration. Last month, Richardson and former President Clinton watched the Super Bowl together at the governor's residence in Santa Fe.

Richardson praised Hillary Clinton as a "distinguished leader with vast experience." But the governor said Obama "will be a historic and great president, who can bring us the change we so desperately need by bringing us together as a nation here at home and with our allies abroad."

The Clinton campaign was publicly dismissive of the endorsement, after the New York senator failed to win it for herself.

Citing Clinton's victory in New Mexico in February, senior strategist Mark Penn said, "Perhaps the time when he could have been most effective has long since past."

Richardson was a roving diplomatic troubleshooter when he was a congressman from New Mexico, negotiating the release of U.S. hostages in several countries and meeting with a rogue's gallery of U.S. adversaries, including Saddam Hussein and Fidel Castro.

"There is no doubt in my mind that Barack Obama has the judgment and courage we need in a commander in chief when our nation's security is on the line," Richardson said. "He showed this judgment by opposing the Iraq war from the start, and he has shown it during this campaign by standing up for a new era in American leadership internationally."

Obama embraced the endorsement of an accomplished figure on the world stage who "understands the importance of restoring diplomacy as a central part of our national security strategy."

Both men have proposed negotiating with enemies as well as friends, while Clinton has emphasized the need to press for changes in repressive or hostile regimes before engaging with them at the presidential level.

But there were also personal aspects to Richardson's swing behind Obama. He noted that both are the sons of one foreign-born parent _ Obama's father was from Kenya, Richardson's mother was from Mexico.

And Richardson told of the time, during one of the many Democratic debates, when his attention wandered and he didn't hear the question that came at him. Obama, then his rival, bailed him out by whispering to him that it was about Hurricane Katrina.

"He could have thrown me under the bus," Richardson cracked, "but he stood behind me."

Among veterans of the once-crowded field of Democratic presidential hopefuls, Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut is the only other one who has taken a side so far. Dodd also endorsed Obama.

John Edwards, the strongest performer among the nomination dropouts, has also been wooed by Clinton and Obama but he's not announced an endorsement.

Good for Bill. He hasn't been called a "typical white person." I live in Chicago and supported Obama for Senator. I have also lived me life as a white minority in my community. How dare Obama, with his priviliged upbringing in Hawaii refer to people like me as "typical white people." By which he means racist. I was in the streets with the Black Panther Party when he wasn't even born. For 20 years I have been doing civil rights law, while he and his wife were at Ivy League schools and then into cushy jobs. Hoe dare he? I did not vote for Bill Clinton, either time, because I thought he sold out the Democratic Party that I knew. I "wasted" my vote on a third party candidiate. "Typical white male," means I will do something I never imagined...I'll vote for McCain against Obama. I live about 12 miles from Obama...the coward should come to my neighborhood...but I don't live in a neighborhood where there are $1,000,000 homes like he does. My neighborhood is very mixed...ethnically, racially, gay and straight and all eco,ich levels. Obama would hate it where I live.

He was referring to his GRANDMOTHER, not you, as a typical white person - read what he actually said. All he said is that many white people hold stereotypes, as do blacks, and that we need to acknowledge this in order to move on. I think there is a big difference between being honest and acknowledging that many people tend to stereotype, and calling the typical white person a racist.

Maybe you should read the entirety of his comments and not the three-word out-of-context soundbite before switching your allegiance to McCain. And if you're willing to vote for McCain (some might see that as cutting off your nose to spite your face), you're selling out the Democratic party, too.

SifSkade and Outlaw63.. this just shows cobre's laziness.. and dont feel bad cobre-- its not just you who is lazy.. its America

and that is precisely what MSM is counting on.. thats Americans wont find out for themselves what the true statements say its easier for them to listen to the 30 second soundbites and make opinions.. then that will (in their minds) justify their racist views..

Shame but true...

Maybe more Americans will grow up soon and stop depending on the MSM to give them their news.

Senator Barack Obama: a "once-in-a lifetime presidential candidate whom the Clintons want to destroy at any cost. It fills me with despair to contemplate we could in any way miss the chance to be led by Barack Obama. The Billary team's dirty, ruthless, trashy tactics fill me with dread, a profound spiritual malaise. I sincerely hope Sen. Obama in spite of them, prevails and has the opportunity to lead this country out of the morass it has been dwelling in the past 7 plus years.
Here we find ourselves scrutinizing this brilliant honorable man in the most savage of manners and yet we let the personification of incompetency, GWB, just slide into the Oval Office.
I am grateful to Gov. Richardson for his endorsement of Barack Obama.

Despair? If this causes you despair than you must be one of the few lucky people on earth who has never lost a loved one or had to care for a sick family member or have had to spend your retirement money to educate your children because the public school system in this country is deplorable. Grow up! If this is the only thing that causes you despair, when your life really starts, you are in for a really rude awakening. Frem the posts on this blog one can discern that we are dealing with truly unseasoned American citizens.

What a thoughtful and eloquent endorsement by Governor Richardson.

The Southwest has two governors that would make excellent running mates with Obama: Governor Bill Richardson and Governor Janet Napolitano. Either one would enhance the Obama candidacy in multiple ways.

(Either one would put Mitt to shame).

Make no mistake about it. This is a major coup for Obama. A lesser candidate would have been driven from the race after what has happened to him over the past three weeks. But as Richardson says, this is a once in a lifetime leader and the endorsement ends a bad week on a very positive note.

And even though Obama took a lot of shit this week, the spotlight remained on him and his abilities to rise above it. He got tested and passed the test. Hillary is increasingly irrelevant. Obama lost a few supporters because of the character assassination and the racism aimed at him, but I'll bet he picked up more than a few along the way. Things are looking good.

And the Republicans are so pathetic and pessimistic about their chances that they have to seize on this pastor controversy and look to Rush Limbaugh to encourage Republicans to vote for Hillary. They know they don't have any way to win except by hoping Obama collapses. Ain't gonna happen, shitheads.

Seriously, though, this is neat. I've been wondering if he was going to endorse someone, and it put a great big smile on my face when I heard the news today. It's such a relief to have something *nice* to focus on, after all the nonsense the MSM has thrown at us lately!

Obama supporters! Now is the time to learn the correct pronunciation of certain IMPORTANT Spanish words. Can we do this?

YES, WE CAN (in spanish is SI SE PUEDE.) Most of us get the first two right, but the last one, "puede" isn't "PWAY-DAY" (the way even Barack pronounces it) it's "pway-they". The whole phrase phonetically (for English speakers) is:

SEE, SAY PWAY-THEY. Si, se puede!

It's not a huge deal, but... I took three years of Spanish, worked in a band for two drunken summers in San Miguel de Allende when I was sixteen (1967) and it just bothers me. (it took many hangovers to earn my accent, I'm sparing you the pain)

Plus, the day Richardson dropped out, I spent three hours writing a letter to him and begging him to endorse Obama. We'll I didn't beg really, I just appealed to him on the grounds that Obama would do a lot for latinos by breaking the racial glass ceiling. Hillary's win could help women, but it wouldn't help people of color. Obama's win helps everybody.

Obama is a rising tide: it lifts all boats.

Gracias amigos, que le vaya bien. And don't forget, when Bill said "Este es un hombre que nos entiende," he meant all of us. "Obmama is a man who understands" and will represent all of "us," black, brown, white, asian... all of us.

The "US" United States of America.

Ov vey. Shame on you for blaming Obama for your feelings. If you are not a bigot you would not feel that way. Senator Obama is a man; Michelle made it clear a year ago he is not running as a black man, he is running as a man. if you all would get over his light brown skin and Kenyan father there would be no race issue going on. There is only one race~the human one. There are different ethnic groups based on shared ancestry. Race was invented by a German scientist in the mid 1880s and his classifications quickly feel out of favor in Europe. The US is backwards in sticking to Negro and Caucasian labels.

Obama did not "initiate" a discussion mid-way through the campaign. He was attacked~actually he has been attacked since day one for one thing or another. He addressed the issue; forget it move on. When ever you accuse someone the fault lies within you. You, therefore are poison.. Sad that Ms. Clinton had to poison people's minds to get votes. She should be ashamed of herself to be so disrespectful to her co-worker in Congress.

LOL. Is it not sad that Hillary and Ferraro and Bill turned the election into "the black" vote. Blacks feel ashamed if they vote for Obama, because people are accusing them of voting for him because he is black. You should be thinking that maybe millions of white people wonder why you would be willing to vote the corrupt Clintons back in DC. Vincent Foster ring a bell? Billy Dale? Jennifer Flowers? Whitegate? Rose Law Firm? Peter Paul and FEC violations? Of course you probably have not noticed her constant lies through out the campaign. Why is she willing to smear people to get votes? If she can not win on her merits she should not be running at all. Real scary as a citizen to see her do this to we, the people. Sad and scary.

Whoops...too late. In case you have been living in dream world, some black people were thinking you are racist all along. What a shock! Um, you know, there isn't much reason for them to think otherwise now is there. The problem is not what someone else might think. The problem is what you are going to do to gain their trust.

How someone sees you goes beyond your Hillary button but wearing the button might make people feel that you want to make the statement that a white woman is more important than a black man. They might see you allied with the wrong side. Then again, to be honest, (and realistic) they won't give a damn about you or your Hillary button because they are more concerned with getting on with their lives.

Is your guilt speaking too loudly to you? If so, that's a good thing. Listen to it and learn.

I'm a white person who is for Obama. I don't think you are a racist because you back Hillary Clintin. I do think you are stupid, however, because you support a person who voted for the War on Iraq without reading the National Intelligence Report. As I'm sure you know (and Hillary should), Saddam Hussein had absolutely nothing to do with 9/11or al-Queda. He also had no WMD's (which the UN inspectors could've verified) and he never, ever posed an imminent threat to the United States. For us to go to war on such dubious evidence is a crime, a crime committed by George W, Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell, Condi Rice, and other international idiots.

P.S. Please remember that Hillary supported these idiots. Obama, thankfully, did not.

HIstory LESSON FOR THE YOUTH

"You want honest race talk. Well here goes. It was not easy to be white, live in the southeast and be an outspoken supporter of the Bill Clinton in the nineties. I would not take it back for nothing in the world. I was accused of being a n......lover many times. I held my head high and kept going. This is not to say it was not easy to be black. I was not black. But the Clintons stood for equality for all races and it was the good fight. I still love the Clintons. Bush abandoned the NAACP immediately upon taking his oath. Go figure. A republican being a racist son-of- thing. I ain't backing down now. The Clintons have always stood for equality for all races. And, they damn sure did not attend a racist church."

Thank you presto. I am an Obama supporter but I appreciate civil, rational comments from the Clinton camp as much as I'm sure the reverse is true--for MOST people. It is easy to get distracted by what I am betting is in reality a relatively small percentage of people in both camps who are capable of posting only vitriolic, name-calling posts. The same positive technological development of the internet and discussion forums like this unfortunately enables wackos to get attention.

Yes I may make critical comments about Clinton campaign tactics but I try not to get too carried away (at least not the way I get about the Bush administration--but hey, Bush and the Republicans DO deserve it). And if the Obama campaign plays a little dirty I wince and wish that they hadn't done so (rather than being psychologically incapable of even admitting that it happened).

Gov. Richardson thinks Senator Obama will bring this Country together. I wasn't aware that we are apart? We have problems but we always solve them when we don't make mistakes and elect a President who has no experience like Obama and no sense like Bush. He insults all politicians and here they are running after him trying to touch his coat tails. What an unseemly sight to behold!!!

Why should Senator Clinton give up for the good of the Party? What Party? It is in worse shape than the Republican Party after Bush trashed it. The Democratic Party is the one that disenfranchises voters with it's Kindergarten 'time out' approach. The Democratic Party is the one that does not understand that this is a 50/50 race right now and Senator Clinton has the right to fight to the end - mathematics notwithstanding . The Democratic Party doesn't understand that 50% of its members do want Senator Clinton as their nominee and we don't want to be tossed aside as unimportant. The Democratic Party doesn't understand that Senator Obama will not unite this party, he will divide it . I, for one, will become an independent as will many others.

I know Senator Obama well.
I first got to know him when I chaired the last Democratic National Convention, where he gave that wonderful keynote address.
And then, last year, as we campaigned against each other for the Presidency, I came to fully appreciate his steadfast patriotism and remarkable talents.
I also felt a kinship with him because we both had one foreign-born parent and we both lived abroad as children.
In part because of these experiences, Barack and I share a deep sense of our nation’s special responsibilities in the world.
[Turn toward Obama and smile]

Governor Richardson,
I find it really hard to understand why you would endorse Barack Obama... Let's put all the recent coverage about Obama's minister of 20 rev. Wright aside and let's put aside the fact that he has not shown a desire to travel outside of the United States most of his life.
One of the main focal points of your campaign was about experience. You know that Hillary Clinton is clearly the candidate with the experience that it will take to face the issues of our nation. Obama's inspiration does not put "meat" on the table, does not resolve clearly difficult issues, and does not bring the leadership that we so desperately need. Obama may get us all to humm as the ship goes down but Hillary is the one that can get it to sail again !!! Also in your state's extremely close primary Hillary Clinton won and as a super-delegate you are going to vote the other way ??? There is nothing super about that. I am extremely disappointed in you and if Obama gets the nomination the McCain campaign will take him apart with Rev. Wright ad.s, limited experience, limited desire to travel abroad, etc. etc. etc.

"the fact that he has not shown a desire to travel outside of the United States most of his life" sounds like slander and a libel lawsuit to me. Where do people come up with these ridiculous statements and act oh so superior about their own stupidity?

Clinton does have experience in lying, campaign contribution fraud, mysterious deaths and clearing of desks of witnesses against her and Bill's crimes. The Clintons are part of the problem the ship is sinking not part of the cure. Ms. Superiority, sigh.

Obama lived abroad for 5 years as a child, he traveled outside of the US to visit his family in Kenya~which makes him ideal as a candidate. Hawaii, where he grew up is a country rich with different cultures. Iraqi ladies, in particular, hate Hillary due to her callousness to them when they came to the USA to speak to her personally. Senator Obama has support from people in so many different countries, I can not begin to list them all. We are globally hated, due to Iraq and she is seen as part of the Bush administration illegal invasion of Iraq. Invading Iran will just seal the fate of sinking our ship. She follows men's lead and would rather talk endlessly on how great she is and how bad Obama is then on why she would vote yes to Iran when we are in debt China to pay for Iraq.

Perhaps you can ask your Goddess if she plans to give equality to the college age gals and draft them along with the boys. Senator Obama is well aware that we are short on troops. I am well aware that the government has been whispering about a return of the draft that even Bill dodged in Viet Nam war days for about a year now.

The 19 year olds did not register to vote for a Bush/Clinton dynasty. The thinkers do not want an impeached President "buy one get one free" back in the White House for more drama and scandals. So, you see, Obama has a good chance to beat McCain and she has none. Both you and she forget that we are citizens, not blindly loyal Party people.

Now Bill Clinton thought highly enough to invite Rev. Wright to the White House and Pres. Johnson thought highly enough of him to give him a personal condemnation thanking him for service. But people like you have that mob mentality and believe the first lie your are told, rather than getting facts before condemning. Reminds me of the good old 1950s. Only then they used ropes.

Obama's popularity multiplies through infectious inspiration and the yearning to be at our best. The divisive blowhard techniques of Hillary Clinton's are imploding her credibility. McCain? Lieberman just planted a device in his ear.

If you find it really hard to understand why Bill R would enthusiastically endorse Obama, then you may need to try a little harder, and look a little deeper. Simply parrotting campaign slogans like "experience" or "ready on day one" or "35 years" over and over are not the kind of reasoning that Bill used in making his decision. To tell you the truth, I really thought Bill would have endorsed Hillary, knowing how close he was to them in Bill C's administration. Maybe you need to ask yourself the question "Does long experience trump good judgement?" I think this may have been the deciding factor.
I also disagree with you...inspiration is not hollow...inspiration is the boost we need to pull together and work for each other, and thereby put meat on all our tables.

Look around the Huff Post and find the articles saying Hillary's campaign is in debt and watch Rev. Wright's entire sermon at:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/03/21/meet-the-white-man-who-_n_92793.html

You shouldn't say another word about Wright until you know what he really said, so you don't make a fool of yourself.

Time to re-evaluate. Richardson knows something you don't know.

The one way to stop this Clinton/Obama cat fight is for enough of the super delegates to come out and say that they pledge to the best-behaved candidate on April 15. This is the only thing that will stop this nonsense.

Right now, Clinton is being rewarded for her bad behavior.

It's true. If Hillary were the leader in states...leader in the popular vote....leader in delegates....and had 48 superdelegates since Feb 5 to Obama's "1"....the Clintons and the press would be declaring her the obvious winner.

It's strange to me that it isn't OBVIOUS to all that it's over for Hillary. She'll win more than 50% in PA, but it'll still be O-V-E-R.

Why is she staying in? It's not for the good of the party (she's hurting it). It's not for Dems to win in November (she and Bill are helping McCain). It's not in "principle" (there is no unique stand on policy that she represents).

So...why? Is it for the money? (She's squirreling away lots for the general election and you don't have to give it back). Is it for ego (hers and Bill's)? Do they get some kind of power trip or adrenalin rush from this?

Is it just pure stubbornness--like during the Lewinsky trial--the refusal to EVER quit, no matter what the repercussions to ANYONE?

I can't understand them, but I can tell there is no altruistic streak, no true patriotism (i,e, the ability to put the good of your country over the good of your own ego and career) in either one of them.

Knowing that Obama has been attending a racist, anti-American church for 20 years says everything about him. If he really wanted to unite and inspire America, he would have turned his back on
that church a Long time ago. He's a hypocrit and a phony. The Democratic party and the media
have been shoving Obama down our throats. I am a soon to be "former" democrat.
