PORTLAND, Ore. — Bill Richardson, the nation's only Hispanic governor, threw his support behind Barack Obama for president Friday, delivering one of the most coveted and tightly held endorsements in the race for the Democratic nomination.

The New Mexico governor joined Obama at spirited rally Friday and said the Illinois senator demonstrated his leadership abilities this week with his speech on race. "You are a once-in-a-lifetime leader," the governor said from the stage. "Above all, you will be a president who brings this nation together."

Richardson dropped his own bid for the nomination in January. His support for Obama comes during a tough period for the senator, the leader in the delegate chase over Hillary Rodham Clinton. Obama has seen his lead in national polls wither as he's grappled with the fallout from divisive remarks by his former pastor.

Richardson was relentlessly courted by both candidates and his support for Obama represents a potential counterweight to Clinton's strength among Hispanic voters.

As a Democratic superdelegate, the governor plays a part in the tight race for nominating votes and could bring other superdelegates to Obama's side. He also had been mentioned as a potential running mate for either candidate.

No primaries are scheduled until Pennsylvania's on April 22, a gap Obama hopes to use for such announcements to assert that he is the front-runner for the nomination. Oregon hold its primary May 20.

Richardson backed Obama despite his ties to Clinton and her husband, the former president. Richardson served as ambassador to the U.N. and as secretary of the Energy Department during the Clinton administration. Last month, Richardson and former President Clinton watched the Super Bowl together at the governor's residence in Santa Fe.

Richardson praised Hillary Clinton as a "distinguished leader with vast experience." But the governor said Obama "will be a historic and great president, who can bring us the change we so desperately need by bringing us together as a nation here at home and with our allies abroad."

The Clinton campaign was publicly dismissive of the endorsement, after the New York senator failed to win it for herself.

Citing Clinton's victory in New Mexico in February, senior strategist Mark Penn said, "Perhaps the time when he could have been most effective has long since past."

Richardson was a roving diplomatic troubleshooter when he was a congressman from New Mexico, negotiating the release of U.S. hostages in several countries and meeting with a rogue's gallery of U.S. adversaries, including Saddam Hussein and Fidel Castro.

"There is no doubt in my mind that Barack Obama has the judgment and courage we need in a commander in chief when our nation's security is on the line," Richardson said. "He showed this judgment by opposing the Iraq war from the start, and he has shown it during this campaign by standing up for a new era in American leadership internationally."

Obama embraced the endorsement of an accomplished figure on the world stage who "understands the importance of restoring diplomacy as a central part of our national security strategy."

Both men have proposed negotiating with enemies as well as friends, while Clinton has emphasized the need to press for changes in repressive or hostile regimes before engaging with them at the presidential level.

But there were also personal aspects to Richardson's swing behind Obama. He noted that both are the sons of one foreign-born parent _ Obama's father was from Kenya, Richardson's mother was from Mexico.

And Richardson told of the time, during one of the many Democratic debates, when his attention wandered and he didn't hear the question that came at him. Obama, then his rival, bailed him out by whispering to him that it was about Hurricane Katrina.

"He could have thrown me under the bus," Richardson cracked, "but he stood behind me."

Among veterans of the once-crowded field of Democratic presidential hopefuls, Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut is the only other one who has taken a side so far. Dodd also endorsed Obama.

John Edwards, the strongest performer among the nomination dropouts, has also been wooed by Clinton and Obama but he's not announced an endorsement.

What would the number of pledged delegates be if there were no supers? Simple math makes me think that you would just subtract 1/2 of the 800. Wouldn't that mean that if the vote were left to the people it would be all but over?

Supporting HRC right now, means that you are in favor of the supers overturning the vote of the people. If you like that idea, what did you think of Gore's win in2000?

Supporting her only makes it easier for McCain to fight for November. The only thing keeping HRC in this race is her ability to manipulate the media. She has the slimmest of chances and the media makes it seem like it is neck and neck. It isn't neck and neck, and the fact is she has about a 3% chance of winning. That isn't bashing.

I grant you, those were poorly chosen words, which seem even more poorly chosen when the rest of his fairly long sentence is hacked off. But you know full well what his intent was. You know full well what he was trying to say. And the fact that you would lunge and attack on an infraction every single one of us is capable of really speaks poorly of you.

Ramirez: Obama didn't just stop when he said "typical white person" did he? He went on to explain in what way, his grandmother was typical, in her fear of black men passing her on the street.

Got a problem with that?

Why is it that everyone is thinking that Richardson was offered to be VP... Is it not enough that he may like this guy? Some of you people are so childish! All you're looking at are the few petty things that have been thrown you way about Obama. No one has anything to say about the fact that they have been able to pull up substantial thing on Clinton, but the worst they could do on Obama was his ex-pastor's sermons! Wake up people... Hillary lied about her experience, her trip to Ireland, Africa, China, etc. all have been dis proven. Anyone that went on those trips have said that she didn't do anything while there. Or what about NAFTA? The fact that she claims that she was always against it, the women that she had a meeting with says it was the total opposite( that was women there), and they admit being upset with her for denying it! And not forget the war! She voted for it but conveniently when the Odds are stacked against it she no longer for the war! Some of you people are impossible. If you can see the light through all of this dark, then you are truly blind, and that is what's wrong with our country. Oh yeah, no one had anything to say about McCain begging for the endorsement of John Hagee, who had disgusting things to say about the Catholic Church...Let's talk more about that!

Do you not see that you are playing in the republican sandpit? If you are TRULY against another George Bush term, you and every other democrat needs to stop the mudslinging. You folks are throwing the election to McCain. It's one thing to support our personal choices for the democratic nominee, but it's quite another, and frankly it is IGNORANT, to slander the democratic candidates (who are not of our choosing) to the point that democrats will vote another republican into office. Don't you see that???

Save your breath beachy. The dementia is so far along that he/she does not care if McCain wins in Nov. The caring and the opening of eyes will only happen when the bombs start falling on Tehran and more of our soldiers are sent to die for yet another pointless and illegal war that will accomplish nothing and drive our nation's economy further into the ground.

Hillary, bless her heart, is going to keep this race/ethnicity/gender issue going until NOBODY will vote for the democratic candidate. I have threatened to vote McCain if she wins on this issue. We all bloviate (both sides) about voting for McCain if our candidate doesn't win the nomination. The fact is...we as patriots who oppose the republican pharisees of the right should vote for ANY DEMOCRAT who winds up honestly (or dishonestly) with the nomination. Let's face it...this is a downright catfight, but the rest of the world is watching the democrats. Let's all suck it up...stop the infighting. I am willing to say that I am for Obama, but if Hillary wins the nomination (or steals it) I am STILL going to vote for her. The republicans are notorious for voting for ANYTHING that runs on their ticket. We democrats should do the same.

Beachykeen02, i really do completely understand and respect your view on this. And i was deeply moved by Richardson's call for party unity today. But i wrestle with it. I'll say it plain, i don't see how i can cast a vote for Hillary when it literally abrades my nerves to do so. And part of it is that i almost feel resentful towards the whole democratic party for allowing her to get away with the crap she's pulling. You know? It's as if the democratic party, as a whole, are like those overly-indulgent parents who let their little kids run around the restaurant shrieking and dipping their fingers into everyone's food. O.K., i've never seen a parent that bad, but you get my analogy. :)

Well, I'm an independent. I see Hillary destroying democratic chances, but she doesn't care.

I understand your disappointment. I understand your logic. But, please. Do NOT vote for someone who is 'WAR-BOUND" with Iran. This country can't stand yet another war. Even as our democratic hopefuls promise to get us out of Iraq, you and I both know that the possibility is SLIM at best. We will be in Iraq for quite awhile. We need bomb-fodder to take the hits. Bush and his cronies need fresh blood. They need bodies to take bullets. They need young men and women to disarm the bombs. Bottom line: They need POOR KIDS. Republicans aren't going to send their RICH, SPOILED, INDULGED children into harms way. They need YOUR CHILDREN. They need MY CHILDREN. They depend upon the poor to die for Haliburton, oil, and any other profits they are making. . I'm a nurse. I'm an orphan. I'm alone, except for my children. My oldest daughter is a nurse. My youngest daughter, my baby, who is at the top of her class (but the child of a poor nurse) is going ROTC and obligating herself to 8 years in the military, to fund her college tuition. She wants to be a cardiac surgeon. She's not a republican. She's not rich. She DOES NOT MATTER. Please don't send my child, and thousands like her, into another war. Vote for ANY democrat who winds up on the ticket. Think about this....don't let the rich folks trick us into voting for yet another round of Bush. Just please DO NOT.

McCain? Integrity? Have you been listening to him lately, or for the past 6 years? He wants endless war, has no clue about economics and wants to make the Bush tax cuts permanent, and needs Lieberman to stand by him to remind him he's lying on camera. Plus, just think about his supreme court picks. I am planning to vote for Obama in the Oregon primary, but would vote for Clinton in a heartbeat over McCain. Please pay attention!

It's hard to believe that Penn has dismissed Richardson's endorsement, now that he can't pander to hispanics on Obama's behalf. Does Penn view Richardson as merely a token hispanic? I think the answer is clearly: yes. Is that how the Clinton campaign sees an endorsement from a hispanic politician? The answer again:yes. That is not only insulting to Richardson himself, but also to the voters who Penn obviously sees as pawns who's support is easily moved around like on a chessboard. Hillary Clinton's own advisors have admitted that she has "... no more than a 10% chance of winning..." With people like Penn involved Im surprised the percentage is even that high.

We are a race-based country. Our societal castes were built upon status and that status was based on whether you were a slave (of African descent) or non-slave, then wealthy and poor. If you are not 100% white, you are "other". "Others" are usually forced, by societal pressures, to associate themselves with the non-white part of their make-up.

Having gone to a private school in New York and college in Virginia, this is the reality. It is a reality that Barak and Bill R. share and it's a one of pain, but also one of strength of character.

I'm laughing. I'm so white it hurts. I'm blonde, blue-eyed, yet my ancestors were slaves. My great-grandfather was a senator. He was defeated in his 3rd term, when it came out (1800's) via his opponent's violent campaign RUMOURS, that my g-grandad was actually a MULATTO...descended from...oh Lord help us...SLAVES!. OMG!!!! My mother never told me. She passed for white. (high yellow here in the south) . I knew it was strange that I was more tan than my peers..which looked very strange with my blonde hair and blue eyes). I am listed as white on my birth certificate. My mom told me, before she died, that she was carrying a "secret" that she would NEVER tell. I didn't find out her "secret" until after her death. I, and my children, have had the best laugh. In her day, it was horrific. In my world...today...it is NOTHING. I am, like most southerners (who just won't admit it) a mix of black and white. That leaves me NOT PREJUDICED, thank God.

Personally I hope Obama is our next president and then maybe, we, the people can get rid of those old laws. Italians were considered black when they came to the USA. I heard that Irish people were also. Anthropologists trace the beginning of human existence to the area or earth we now call Africa. Studies of DNA is confirming we are all related if we go back far enough in time. I think it is about time we all become simply citizens of the US or non-citizens. This bickering and hatreds kills me. As Obama points out: "We are more alike than we are different". I say; here comes that tsunami wave, we all be running.

Obama was far from my first choice, but I have to say he has run a great campaign.
He has also done very well with keeping his head above the fray and attacks.
He has demonstrated he can handle whatever is thrown at him.

Clinton by contrast has run a poor campaign and that speaks volumes about her leadership abilities and the much touted experience she claims to possess.

Between the two Richardson made the right choice.

I agree with your very succinct analysis. I originally supported Edwards, then stayed open to Obama and Clinton. As time rolled on I leaned more to Obama... the leadup to the Texas and Ohio primaries pretty much showed me how desperate the Clinton campaign was, while indeed Obama stayed on topic and above the fray. and it cost him. but now we know he won Texas, whose results I think will become official in about a week...
