PORTLAND, Ore. — Bill Richardson, the nation's only Hispanic governor, threw his support behind Barack Obama for president Friday, delivering one of the most coveted and tightly held endorsements in the race for the Democratic nomination.

The New Mexico governor joined Obama at spirited rally Friday and said the Illinois senator demonstrated his leadership abilities this week with his speech on race. "You are a once-in-a-lifetime leader," the governor said from the stage. "Above all, you will be a president who brings this nation together."

Richardson dropped his own bid for the nomination in January. His support for Obama comes during a tough period for the senator, the leader in the delegate chase over Hillary Rodham Clinton. Obama has seen his lead in national polls wither as he's grappled with the fallout from divisive remarks by his former pastor.

Richardson was relentlessly courted by both candidates and his support for Obama represents a potential counterweight to Clinton's strength among Hispanic voters.

As a Democratic superdelegate, the governor plays a part in the tight race for nominating votes and could bring other superdelegates to Obama's side. He also had been mentioned as a potential running mate for either candidate.

No primaries are scheduled until Pennsylvania's on April 22, a gap Obama hopes to use for such announcements to assert that he is the front-runner for the nomination. Oregon hold its primary May 20.

Richardson backed Obama despite his ties to Clinton and her husband, the former president. Richardson served as ambassador to the U.N. and as secretary of the Energy Department during the Clinton administration. Last month, Richardson and former President Clinton watched the Super Bowl together at the governor's residence in Santa Fe.

Richardson praised Hillary Clinton as a "distinguished leader with vast experience." But the governor said Obama "will be a historic and great president, who can bring us the change we so desperately need by bringing us together as a nation here at home and with our allies abroad."

Story continues below

The Clinton campaign was publicly dismissive of the endorsement, after the New York senator failed to win it for herself.

Citing Clinton's victory in New Mexico in February, senior strategist Mark Penn said, "Perhaps the time when he could have been most effective has long since past."

Richardson was a roving diplomatic troubleshooter when he was a congressman from New Mexico, negotiating the release of U.S. hostages in several countries and meeting with a rogue's gallery of U.S. adversaries, including Saddam Hussein and Fidel Castro.

"There is no doubt in my mind that Barack Obama has the judgment and courage we need in a commander in chief when our nation's security is on the line," Richardson said. "He showed this judgment by opposing the Iraq war from the start, and he has shown it during this campaign by standing up for a new era in American leadership internationally."

Obama embraced the endorsement of an accomplished figure on the world stage who "understands the importance of restoring diplomacy as a central part of our national security strategy."

Both men have proposed negotiating with enemies as well as friends, while Clinton has emphasized the need to press for changes in repressive or hostile regimes before engaging with them at the presidential level.

But there were also personal aspects to Richardson's swing behind Obama. He noted that both are the sons of one foreign-born parent _ Obama's father was from Kenya, Richardson's mother was from Mexico.

And Richardson told of the time, during one of the many Democratic debates, when his attention wandered and he didn't hear the question that came at him. Obama, then his rival, bailed him out by whispering to him that it was about Hurricane Katrina.

"He could have thrown me under the bus," Richardson cracked, "but he stood behind me."

Among veterans of the once-crowded field of Democratic presidential hopefuls, Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut is the only other one who has taken a side so far. Dodd also endorsed Obama.

John Edwards, the strongest performer among the nomination dropouts, has also been wooed by Clinton and Obama but he's not announced an endorsement.

Richardson on Olbermann said he almost endorsed Clinton after Bill gave him the full court press at Super Bowl time.

Oooh- that's gotta hurt!

The best part about being alive and well in America
is having Barack Obama on his way to the White House.
The movement that is McCain (gee, he seems like a nice guy and all...) will fizzle.
Hillary has no leg to stand on with her argument that Florida counted, and I don't want
another President that makes up the rules as he (or she) goes along.
OBAMA 08!

Here's the HuffPost main headline:

"Richardson: I Resent Clinton Suggestion That "Only Value" Is Swaying Hispanics"

Yet NOWHERE in this report or on the video does Richardson say this.

Despicable yellow journalism.

After listening Michelle's "first time proud of America sermon", then reading Barack Obama's book and then hearing his speech about the pastor, then finding out about his pastor and Farrakhan travelled to Libya met Qadhafi and then the Pastor giving "lifetime achievement award to Farrakhan, I lost all respect for Obama and ceased my support.
Now Bill Richardson turned his coat and became a Hispanic American, I abhore their compartmentalization of America. I must say that for the first time these politicians making me feel guilty of being a Democrat.
Thank you Mr. Richardson, I recommend you read his book "Dreams from my father" written long before he got into the contest. The book shows real Obama and please do not sell him to us for the one speech that made you fall in my sight.
Regards.

Did you actually listen to what Michelle Obama said, or just listen to what the media reported. she said that for the for the first time in her adult life she was REALLy proud to be an American. Now, the word really changes the tone of the statment, but when combined with the context of the question she was asked, and put into the entire text of her reply, it is in fact a completely normal sounding thing.
Stop listening to the infotainment "reporters" find out the truth.

Olberman, ORieley,Carlson,Cooper,Mathews,Hannity,Blitzer, Dobbs........... none of them are reporters, or news anchors, their obligation is to get ratings and stir debate, not report the news.

The news dosent get canceled, but Tucker Carlson just did.

Did you consider 'tone' and 'context' when assessing comments by the Clinton campaign or a you simply s hypocrite? For the last 6 months, the Obama crowd has wanted to do the tone and context bit, which would be fine, except they haven't extended the same consideration to the other side consistently. They've jumped on every innocuous comment by Bill or Hillary and blown them out of proportion.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:23 PM on 03/21/2008

No, she didn't actually listen to Michelle's speech, or she wouldn't have characterized it as a sermon. No, she didn't actually read Senator Obama's national best selling book, or she would have recognized that the "real" Obama is as authentic as his speeches have represented him to be and that Governor Richardson should be commended for his thoughtful endorsement. And if she had even made a moderate attempt to research for herself the information about Senator Obama's pastor and his church, information that is now even being reported by some media venues and information that contradicts everything Fox News has espoused, she would know that the defamation of Pastor Wright and Trinity United Church of Christ have been solidly debunked. And if she had even a modicum of respect for Senator Obama, as she claims she did, she would have done all of the above before making the claims she has made. So, in essence, the answer to your question is NO.

These comments are amazingly civil. The hate, religious mouth foaming and utter illiteracy has been especially frightening lately.

Folks. Most of us agree that President Obama will lift us up and lead us to something better.

We all recognize that Clinton believes that she is entitled to the job. And that she will be as foul and deceptive as necessary, even after it's clear she can't win.

I'm sure we also have a tacit understanding that the GOP has a dossier a foot thick, filled with dirt on
Bill's sex addiction , cheesy business dealings, etc.

I think that we all need to write to the DNC and tell them how we feel. If we don't write letters and raise hell, we will not have done all we can to elect Barak Obama.

Remember how you felt on Nov 5 2000? How about Nov 3 2004?
If Billary steals this, thats how we'll feel in August 2008

I believe our nation and its citizens will not survive another republican war administration. I have been absolutely certain that it must be the democrats to restore the nation of We The People, but have refrained from judgment until I am able to witness the character of the individuals who are in contest with each other in the democratic party. From my point of view, the absolute ability inherent in Hillary Clinton has been overwhelmed with the destructiveness of her campaign in the past few weeks. Every day that passes is demonstration that she truly is using vicious republican tactics, and I have no respect for that. If she cannot believe that her own merits can stand strongly on their own, and since she insists upon constant attempts to destroy a completely valid competitor without care for the potential consequences, I now find myself in her opposing "camp" at this present moment. The "Goldwater Girl" has reverted to stereotype, I'm sorry to say; I can't say, however, that this gives me any emotion other than saddness.

It seems that this campaign has brought out the "warrior" in Hillary. Some would argue that this "warrior" energy is desireable for a "commander in chief." However, I for one would have appreciated an articulate diplomatic person guilding this ship of state for the past few years. I'm not convinced that a "warrior" can convincingly be a diplomat; recent history has only emphasized this, and we have all witnessed the consequences. If "warrior" is her nature, so be it. She is what she is. However, I personally have witnessed more than I can bear of aggressive expression, and I am ready to experience a diplomat at the helm of this nation.

I think we all should. She's gone too far insomuch as she is making people hate Obama to the point that her supporters are stating they would vote republican. This is NOT party stance. We, as Americans, are risking our children's lives in yet another war. If you are paying attention, our current theocracy-laden and zionists leaders are moving ever closer to launching a war against Iran. We as democrats need to, at this time, ban together and chastise both candidates. If we do not present the democratic party as a party of sanity, cohesion, and leadership....we will not only lose this election, we will be laying ourselves wide open to the outrageous beliefs and desires of the religious right. I'm a Christian, and I love the Lord. The religious republican right IS NOT true. It is fase, and you Christians out there who are reading this...you know it's true as well. This pro-war, pro-capitalist, pro-rich agenda has nothing to do with the Jesus in the Bible...it has everything to do with a few smart rich folks who lead millions of ignorant, bigoted zealots into the ballot box.

Suck it up...write your favorite democratic candidate. It doesn't matter whether that is Clinton or Obama...both could win this...but stop with the blood-letting, or you can bet your sweet "bippy" you'll be watching a war with Iran next year.

Wow, saddness indeed.

I've said on here many times that Obama's church and race are going to be the undoing of us this year. Way before it came out in the media, I was saying that was going to be the case. The media waited until it is probably too late to change course. Richardson, who has never impressed me as being very bright, has probably just ensured the defeat of Democrats this year.

There is only a tiny bit of hope left. We have to reject Obama's inferiority as a candidate because the power of this racial baggage. It is not going to be the same with gender and I'm sad that I'm going to end up being so right.

It is in the hands of NC, Oregon, PA, Indiana, Puero Rico to look at what Wright is going to do to Obama's candidacy. He is going to lose as top of ticket. But we could win with him as a 2 and Clinton 1, then he could win in 8 years. That would be the smart play for people who really care about real change. The kind that does take politics, expediency, compromise and what this nation was built on, special interests.

People who live in a dream world and call it hope, are the one's that always blow it for the rest of us.

We may be at the most pivotal time in our history in the last half century. The people who are left to vote in the Democratic primary hold the future in their hands, I hope they choose wisely, but that does not seem very realistic at this point.

I'm prepared for a roght time ahead for this country. I think we can plan on at least 2 more ultra conservative justices on the supreme court by 2012. I think Mccain will likely get it. And when that happens, the same people with hope, will whine and say: Clinton did it, she stayed in! BS. You did it, you pouted and wanted what you wanted and you "rolled the dice."

I think you can be "hopeful" that you are going to have a much more to complain about over the next few years.

Good luck, I guess if we can survive Bush, and Nixon, we can survive Mccain being an 80 year old prez suffering from PTSD. Well, let's hope so, anyway.

" look at what Wright is going to do to Obama's candidacy"

What Wright is going to do to Obama's candidacy lies within your mind, and within the tenacity of the media to keep it alive. Religion continues its attempt to influence our secular political life, but to me "not this time." Actually...religion has NEVER influenced my vote, I'm very proud to say. Well, maybe that's not exactly true. The more a "religion" supports a candidate, the more I distance myself from that candidate. The lesson of the "taliban" is ever-present in my mind, and I have no illusion that any of these political "religions" are any different.

There is no hope for Hillary to win anymore. She has to just get out of the race.

I admire her a lot. And I do think she's a liberal and a progressive and the progressive movements don't give her the credit she deserves, but her campaign did not plan because they honestly thought they were going to win. That's not how you plan any competition. They lost their own campaign.

The problem with your logic is that the Clintons only care about the Democratic Party insofar as they can use it as an instrumentality to achieve their own political end game. The Clintons have never been party builders and have no agenda beyond their own lust for access to the highest levels of power. The worst thing that could happen to Hillary is that Obama wins and defeats McCain because that would effectively ICE Hillary until 2016. Hillary has no intention of waiting 8 years, hence the goal is to destroy Obama, divide up the Democratic Party and prop up McCain. Hillary knows she is going to lose the nomination but she wants to stink up the process just enough to hurt Obama and reduce his chances of obtaining the ultimate prize.
